I called Dr. Darrow on his radio show about a year ago, and he had a long conversation with me on air...about the arthritis in my hands. I was experiencing pain at the base of my thumbs when I used them to grip or pinch, and I was occasionally dropping things as a result of the discomfort. (This is known as CMC arthritis or basal joint arthritis.) I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Darrow. I had ankle problems for 6 months and tried everything. I was in a cast for a month and had 2 cortisone shots. Nothing worked. I went to this doctor for prolotherapy on my knee. During intake I told his assistant I was currently in treatment with corticosteroids for a bad case of poison oak. The assistant immediately told me that I'd have to come back when I was off the drug. He called the doctor into the room, who told the skeptical assistant to continue with the prolotherapy shots. I should have known something was up with the assistant's hesitancy to proceed even after doctor told him to. Of course, I had NO reaction to the shots, no pain, no swelling... because corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory, defeating the whole purpose. I don't want to say I didn't think it would work going in but i'm shocked how much better my shoulder is. I'm a physical therapist with a 10+ year history of shoulder pain. It wasn't bad enough to consider surgery but I was waking up 4 or 5 times every night in pain having to roll out on my racketball and stretch on the wall at 3 AM to get back to sleep. I do powerlifting and olympic lifting 5-7 days a week and developed some tendonitis in my left shoulder rotator cuff that was continuously getting worse (obviously my fault for continuing lift but wasn't going to stop). I had my first treatment 4 weeks ago for my right knee. The knee felt better right away but I over did it. I should have taken it easy but I didn't, typical of Steve. It felt a little better but I blew it I should have rested and chilled. I go back for my second treatment with my knee just as swollen as when I first came in, I get the second treatment with the understanding that I have to take easy. What a difference, by the time I came back my knee was feeling really good not a 100% but maybe 75%. I had a knee injury 3.5 years ago while skiing. My initial MRI showed damage to my ACL and MCL. The damage to the ACL was so extensive that one of the radiologists thought that it was a complete tear. Although another doctor did comment there were still some intact ligaments. I had physical therapy but never followed up for surgery. A few months ago, I decided to try stem cell therapy because I continued to have pain after jogging. Several years ago I had been in the Sequoias taking photos. After the second day I had a hard time walking because my knees ached so bad. Really glad I decided to try this! I'm about a month out from a PRP injection. I had a torn meniscus that wouldn't heal. Dr. Darrow recommended PRP and took out fluid (like 2-3 shot glasses worth, ewww). As soon as he was done, I could stretch my knee out straight for the first time in months. Right afterward my knee was a little sore, but there was no pain. I had been taking at least six Advil a day prior to the PRP and haven't taken anything for it since. I received a single knee PRP injection over a year ago, and if I were to do it all over again it wouldn't of been with Dr. Darrow because my knee never was never the same and actually came out worse. It took 2 unusual months to recover from the procedure but my knee came out overall weaker, there's a buckling sensation and with slight numbness in the toes. How is this possible from a single knee injection? My only guess is the methodology of injection was incorrect or he improperly striked a nerve during the procedure, because a single PRP injection should not of made things worse. I have an injured knee (torn ligament and split in my kneecap cartilage) and was misdiagnosed by my workman's compensation surgeon. He had scheduled me for a major knee surgery that would have been life changing for me. Luckily I got a second opinion a week before my surgery date. We spent about 20k and around a year to get my mom's knee fixed. The doctor keeps telling you 'next time will be better' which continued on for a year. I don't know why he has such high ratings. Maybe stem cell works on few young people, but if you are over 50, chances are it's not going to do anything. My mom has to get knee surgery as her knee got much worse while trying to be 'hopeful' at this doctor. Also doctor suggested her to not use her bad side of knee as much as possible, which made her lose most of the muscle on the bad knee. With so little muscle, her pain and torn cartilage obviously got much, much worse. Dr. Darrow and his team are the consummate professionals! So when I was like 12 years old, I picked up heavy dog food and strained my lower back. He did the procedure. He took viles of blood from me then came back with these viles that looked like olive oil. "These are your white blood cells" he said "I'm going to inject this into your neck." Bottom line is. It worked. Two weeks later, pain slowly disappeared. My neck feels normal. No depression. No anxiety. This man probably saved my life. I'm recommending him to EVERYONE I know.
