My first visit about a year ago was meh but decided to give them another shot - in large part because they are one of a handful of places open Sunday morning. My friend and I went to Copain for the first time today. What a joy! I had my eye on the Sun-dried Tomato Scone but asked if they would be able to heat it up. She said of course! I was so impressed by Copain!! From the outside, you wouldn't expect it to be as cute and cozy as it is inside! I went with a few friends and our babies, and we were able to comfortably sit in the back for a good 2 hours. I got the chicken salad sandwich, and it was very good! The chicken salad is made in-house. It had the perfect amount of mayo. The bread was fresh and delicious. The side salad was simple and a nice addition to the meal. This is such a high end coffee shop, the shop looks so fancy! I ordered a cold brew iced coffee with Vanilla and Lavender. Oh my delicious cup of java! They have so many options for pastries and bread! Decided to get the tomatoes basil scone and a almond croissant. Almond crossiant, have such a great flaky texture, almonds on top with powder sugar. Delicious. Tomato basil scone, has pieces of tomato in it and is not salty at all. Both are so well made! The ladies were lovely there and was patient with me( this is my first time here). There's plenty of parking since there is a parking deck also. Great stop after leaving the social security office on this rainy day. This has become our after-church tradition on Sunday mornings. The inside is very chic, with soft French music playing, beautiful tile, and glass cabinets showing absolutely delicious and tempting pastries. Even the bathrooms are chic. We have sampled a lot of their food offerings, including multiple croissants, biscuits with bacon, egg and cheese, ham & brie croissant, and a donut. NOTHING has disappointed. This place represents a great addition to the WS bakery scene, in fact there is probably only one that can top the quality and variety offered here. Copain Bakery was begun in Charlotte in the early 80's by J. Basul Noble. Chef Noble heads Noble food and Pursuits which operates 5 food spots in WS and Charlotte - Copain, Rooster's Wood Fired Kitchen, Noble Smoke, Bossy Beulah's, and The Jimmy. I came with a single minded focus - the Raspberry Croissant, and that was what I had. This croissant was quite nice - flaky with a great raspberry filling with a touch of tartness. This pastry is huge, and vey well filled. As almost always happens when you are in a spot that has so many choices that are so attractively displayed, you rarely end up with just 1 item. In addition to the raspberry pastry I chose a Blueberry Danish - another excellent item. I walked in at 10:15 AM and was waited on immediately, and was back in my car in 5 minutes or so. I've seen Copain pop up on Yelp a few times, I had the pleasure of chrcking them out! They had a lot of pastry options, and breakfast items and amazing coffee! They had a few vegetarian options as well and some gluten free options! I couldn't take a picture of it but I got a dirty chai and it was wonderful. I also got their spinach quiche which was my first ever quiche, and I absolutely loved it! I tried the lemon poppy seed muffin which was under $3 by the way, lately these bakeries are charging way too much, so it was refreshing to see a place not gouge just because it's beautiful and French. It was actually a very dense muffin which I enjoyed, great for dipping in coffee. Yes... I dip stuff in coffee all the time. They had fresh focaccia, fresh baguettes, bread galore. They had macaroons and muffins and apple hand pies and quiche. All priced reasonably. My friend tried the caramel oatmeal latte and said it was the best she ever had. I've been so excited for this place to finally open up! I arrived first thing for their grand opening - I actually got here at 6:45am and sat in my car! They were still finalizing getting ready but everything looked great from the outside? It's a bright, clean, spacious place with lots of seating and plenty of breakfast and lunch goodies, plus wine! Arriving right at 7am, I'll have to save the wine for next time! This morning I got a drip coffee with caramel and two macarons (coffee and lemon poppyseed). I specifically requested the coffee in a mug since I wanted to sit for a bit and read. The macarons were served in a to go bag so I just placed them on my coffee saucer :) The coffee was tasty, definitely a smaller portion - maybe 6oz. The macarons were good too (I'm not the harshest sugar critic, if it's sweet, I can't hate it) but a little cold and harder, I wish the inside was either warmer or just a bit creamier. Service was great- for opening day, everyone was a little frantic, and expectedly so, but they greeted us warmly and took care of us with all smiles! First off, the decoration and styling of the bakery is beautiful! They have a wide array of pastries plus some lunch items. I came around 11 am on a Wednesday, and maybe because it was opening week (or maybe not?), the place was packed! I tried the raspberry croissant, chocolate chip cookie, and strawberry cream puff, all of which I'd recommend. This bakery doubles as a brassiere. I was greeted by warm lovely smiles. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The space is very inviting with lots of natural lighting. Jazz music plays in the background and the smell of baked goods fill the air. They offer an array of honey, salts, and jams to take home. They have a beautiful case filled with French style deserts and the coffee is top tier. I also tried the pomegranate fruit tart. I highly recommend giving it a try! This spot did not disappoint. They have just opened so the line was very long and they were out of a lot of things, including the french baguettes. Service was very friendly and they progressed the line quickly. The food offerings I tried were good, not great - certainly this is no Parisian bakery but as we lack almost any decent bakery in the piedmont area, they will do fine I'm sure. Unfortunately although they are emulating a French bakery, they are fully American in most of their recipes and styles. They have no items they call gluten free but do have some they term "gluten friendly" - the issue being they are made in an offsite location without certainty about cross-contamination. As a sandwich shop it looks quite nice, as an American bakery it's honestly above par, but as a French bakery it's a knock off unfortunately. read more

I was excited that a new coffee shop was opening in such a central location, and we finally got to check it out! Pros: The service was honestly really great- they were patient with us as we were admiring all of their pastries and deciding what we wanted. We decided on one sweeter and one more savory pastry (the jalapeño pastry was still slightly sweet). They offered to heat up our pastries I love warm pastries). There was ample seating inside. There were people on coffee dates, groups of friends catching up, families spending time together, and some students studying as well- a place truly for anyone. Cons: Honestly I probably wouldn't get either of the pastries again. They tasted like they had been sitting out a while. The caramel latte wasn't my favorite and I probably won't get it again either. The caramel syrup tasted more like Splenda. This latte is smaller than I normally get at other cafes and was about the same price as well. Would I go back? If it wasn't for the great location and great indoor seating area, I'd recommend other small business coffee shops that are in the area. I'd go back if a friend wanted to meet over coffee, but wouldn't choose to come here alone. read more

Copain has become a regular stop for my wife and me every Sunday. I always ask the server what his or her favorite item is and try that so I don't get into a rut of always getting the same thing. Today the fellow recommended a Crème brûlée doughnut. It was phenomenal. My wife had the sticky bun. She wouldn't give me a bite. I called her a name and she said for that I could have a bite of her tomato galette (it's a savory tart)that she bought for lunch later. I called her another name since I figured that she didn't have anything else she could withhold. I was wrong. Copain is owned by the same group that owns Roosters, a Noble Grill, which is one our favorite restaurants in Winston-Salem. Copain occupies the space right next to Roosters. It has the vibe of a French brasserie. The staff has always been very helpful, polite and friendly. I recommend try it. You won't be disappointed. Finally made it to Copain Bakery in Winston-Salem recently after seeing it all over social media. The space is so cute, though it can get a little crowded, so finding a seat might take a minute. The staff was super friendly and helped us pick what to try, which was great because there were so many options. I ended up getting the Raspberry Croissant, Speck & Gruyere Croissant, Blueberry Danish, and a Crème Brûlée Doughnut. Everything was delicious, but the Raspberry Croissant was definitely the favorite! I also tried a lavender latte and it was amazing. I got a cappuccino and a raspberry croissant which they warmed up for me. My friend got a coffee and a slice of spinach and feta quiche. I asked for my cappuccino to be put in a real cup which they forgot but corrected. I loved my raspberry croissant ! Subtle raspberry flavor and a little cream cheese I think was inside. Pastry was nice and flaky just how I like it. When warmed they taste even better. Would definitely get this again. They have so much variety though I want to try something different every time. There's about 5 different types of croissants. Original, almond, chocolate, raspberry and ham and cheese. My friend liked her quiche and the other savories looked good too around us. She said the coffee was ok. Which drip coffee is self serve and free refills. She said for a French bakery the coffee could be better. Great place for friends, moms, family's and business meetings. There were several of those students working taking up a table for two for a long time and all they had was a drink on the table. This always kinda annoys me at most places like this but what ya gonna do!? All in all this will be on my coffee shop rotation for sure , I'd like to try some savory next time. Both were very tasty, and I would try the other quiche flavors they have. For something sweet, we shared the Boston cream pie croissant. It was a creative take on the pastry. The vanilla cream and chocolate were excellent. I also had their drip coffee which was good. The inside is modern and inviting. From opening the doors to the friendly greeting from the barista, my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed Copain bakery and provisions! It had the coolest vibe with the most pleasant soothing music. There are also a ton of pastries from savory options to sweet options to even salads. We got the pumpkin scone and apple danish. He enjoyed his scone and I enjoyed my danish. I then got a caramelized onion scone, which was good but just needed to be warmed. I didn't ask them to warm it, but ate it but the next time I go, I will definitely ask for it to be warmed if I choose to get another scone. My friend got a regular drip coffee, which he enjoyed thoroughly. I got an iced mocha, which was good but the espresso had very little coffee taste to it. My mocha tasted like very good oat milk iced chocolate with cinnamon powder. I asked the very kind and friendly barista if he had put espresso in it, and he said that he was sure he put two shots of espresso in it. The next time I'll just get three shots. Since I was missing the taste of coffee, I ordered an additional iced coffee with a splash of oat milk, but was given an iced macchiato instead. When I told the barista this as she brought me my coffee, she said that if I didn't like it, she could make me an iced coffee. I'm not sure that they do cold brew as I ask the other barista and he said that they did, but maybe he thought I was talking about an iced macchiato which is a very different thing. Anyway, the iced macchiato definitely tasted much more like coffee even though of course macchiato's are just watered down espresso. We will definitely be back because again the pastries were good and the vibe and employees were even better! This is competition to Bobby boy bake shop as they are both French inspired bakeries. I will say that Bobby boys pastries are much better though. For example, I asked the barista if their apple danish had real apples on it or apple pie filling, and he said that it had real apples. It did have real apples however there were only tiny pieces of real apple as Bobby boy, bake shops, apple danish has actual apple slices and lots of them. There was also some type of cream mixed into the apple pieces that was very tasty I must say. The dough at Bobby boy is also much flakier and less sweet. I also ordered a turtle tart to go and just finished eating it. It was good Ish, but not as flavorful as I expected. It had something aKin to chocolate mousse and pieces of pecan in it. The crust was good. Again, it was good-ish though. You should still try Copain as they've got such a cool and pleasant vibe and according to my friend, very good drip coffee as well. AMAZING! The raspberry croissant was a surprise with the delicious berry and cream filling- the best croissant I've ever had. The Caprese sandwich was unreal... I love the burrata, the pesto and the amazing focaccia .. I can't say enough good things about the visit. I went on the second day of their opening, expecting a line or long wait, but they move customers through quickly.
