Except the "Italian home" is actually a family's backyard. Some families install a swimming pool. This family took a different path and installed an authentic Neapolitan pizza restaurant. You have to see this place to believe it. Apparently, it flew under the radar for a few years until an influencer recently discovered it and posted about it. Now, word is getting out--and judging by our visit Sunday, August 23, it's blowing up. The place was packed. Service was definitely slower than you might encounter in Little Italy, but then again, keep reminding yourself: you are sitting in a family's backyard, and Momma is in the kitchen. Our table ordered a variety of pizzas and focaccia, and everything was delicious. The tomato sauce was particularly outstanding. I'll admit I prefer a crispier crust than what I got, but it was still wonderfully chewy and flavorful. And honestly, the setting is half the fun. It feels less like going to a restaurant and more like being invited into someone's very enthusiastic--and very delicious--family project. This place was so good and who would've guessed its located in the backyard of a house! We made reservations in advance for a Saturday night. We ordered the Margherita pizza and a tiramisu for dessert. So yum, so authentic, so fresh. Give me MORE! They have the pizza oven located right by the seating area, so you can watch the pizzas being made right in front of you!! The backyard is so cute and homey. You feel like a family guest in there. As much as I want to give it a 5/5, I do want to knock down one star just for the service speed. Everyone is SO NICE and SO SWEET. But eating there took a bit longer than I anticipated. When we made our reservation, there was an option to pre-order. When we sat down, we were told that the pre order didn't go through and they didn't receive anything. It took about 30 minutes to get our orders in after we had sat down. And then about another 25 minutes for our pizza. Then another 25 for our tiramisu and then another wait to get the bill. HOWEVER!!! They did tell us Saturday turned out busier than expected. MARCELLO, the owner, is also the chef and from what I could see, he was making all the orders!! Staff were so sweet and it's a backyard restaurant, so I totally understand (especially for a weekend)! They told us to try and come back when it's not so busy. I love trying new local spots! So when I heard about this absolute hidden gem of a restaurant just a few minutes away from my house, I had to try it. Marcello Pizza Napoli is a cozy pizzeria nestled in La Mesa, known for its authentic Italian flavors and traditional wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas. The vibe is definitely reminiscent to the Italian countryside- a private yet charming outdoor setting surrounded by potted herbs, string lights, and closely spaced tables that evoke a warm, intimate, and romantic setting (perfect for date nights or quiet dinners with friends). The Vespas were also a nice touch- created an authentic, nostalgic atmosphere that transports diners straight to the streets of Rome. The real highlight of our dining experience was the food. We started the evening with an order of polpette- homemade meatballs in rich tomato sauce, shaved parmesan, and served with fresh focaccia bread 8/10! I ordered the lasagna bolognese- it was rich and well balanced in flavor with a lightly crisped, toasted cheese crust on the upper layer 9/10! My wife ordered the ravioli with pesto- rich and creamy with a herbaceous punch of basil 9/10! (2) standouts were the gnocchi alla sorrentina and the pepperoni pizza. The gnocchi were stuffed with cheese (absolute game changer). The potato gnocchi was soft, tender, and pillowy. Hands down one of the best gnocchi I've ever had in my life 11/10! The pizza is what they're known for- it had a nice puffy crust with charred edges. Fresh ingredients highlight the pure taste of fermented wheat, sea salt, and extra virgin olive oil 10/10! Overall, service was great! And the quality of food was excellent. At times, they did run out of beverages (coke, blood orange, and modelo beer). What an awesome hidden gem in La Mesa. This is a restaurant located in the backyard of a home in La Mesa. They also do catering and private events. When you arrive, you just come around the back to an outdoor dining area with lots of tables, chairs, and covered areas for shade. At night the whole patio area lights up to give you just enough light for a romantic space. The food is made by a real Napoletano Chef from the house made pasta to the wood fire pizzas. We ordered the gnocchi and swapped the red sauce for pesto. Let me tell you it was sooooo good! The gnocchi was melt in your mouth soft and the pesto was perfect. The bolognese pasta was delicious and the pasta was so tender and delicious. We ordered 3 of the wood fire pizzas and the crust was so soft. The Pepe pizza which is a pepperoni pizza was my favorite with its soft, almost melt in your mouth crust with a red sauce that was PERFETTO!! The pizza crust is definitely worth the visit to Marcello's. The service was outstanding!! They were so nice and took very good care of us. They do not serve wine however they will allow you to bring your own. This was a perfect location for a retirement party. The chef and staff had appetizers prepared upon arrival and a table filled with Prosecco and assorted wines and beers. Guests were able to bring their own alcohol with no corkage fees. It was a beautifully decorated backyard with ample patio heaters, chairs and tables to accommodate guests. There were also two classic cars that people were able to appreciate if you enjoy vintage cars. It was a very laid back environment where children were able to run freely. The food was excellent. Chef Marcello finessed his pizza skills while preparing the assorted pizzas for interested observers. I had 4 different slices since he was cranking them out and popping them on the counter for individuals to take at their leisure. It made for interesting conversations of the variety. We recently celebrated a special occasion at Marcello's fabulous event site. From the start of the planning to the end of the evening, we could not have asked for a better host and chef. Before the party, Marcello was accommodating and responsive to our questions and requests. During the party, he was focused and hard at work, yet very affable and hospitable with us and our guests. The setting of the place evokes images of somewhere in Italy or Spain, where time slows down and longtime friends enjoy good food and each other's' company. A large table under a pergola can sit about 10/15 diners family-style, while the many other charming corners, some with firepits, invite people to mingle in smaller groups. Also, the several patio heaters make cooler evenings very enjoyable. The appetizer of bruschetta, charcuterie, crudités and cheese was abundant and so, so good. The pizzas are authentic Napoli style, a delightful combination of airy crust and soft core. They came in many varieties, with plenty of options for meat eaters and vegetarians. Italian and American friends where enthusiastic, good thing that Marcello kept churning them out, as they were gone as soon as they touched the table. The dessert was a beautiful sight of mouthwatering homemade cannoli arranged around a luscious, rich, chocolate cake; the presentation was definitely a show-stopper.
