I must say, their selection of quiches is wonderful, and they are all amazingly good. We usually also find niche foods, and I always get a gourmet fine chocolate bar for my neighbors back home in Vancouver, too (my neighbors are chocolate connoisseurs of sorts, so it's not as if I can get them an Oh Henry bar lol). In the past, I've also gotten many a bottle of Gibby's salad dressing here. (I love how this store sells condiments from local well-known restaurants, like Gibby's, Joe Beef, Mandy's, etc. It's a great place to get food gifts from Montreal). Yesterday I was in the area and popped in to get a few bottles of said salad dressing but I couldn't find it anywhere. I asked a lady who was working there, in the aisles, where this item was located, and she looked at me as if I was from Mars, asking me in French if I spoke French. She clearly did not speak or understand English and my French is sorely lacking. I was able to convey "salad" and "Gibby's",but I don't know how to say "salad dressing". She totally shrugged me off and went back to her work, as if I was a bothersome but ignorable annoyance. I have to admit, this rubbed me the wrong way. I've lived in the USA and in Vancouver now for so many years, I'm sorry if my French isn't great, but I'm trying. If I'm a paying customer at a store and I'm trying, but you don't understand me, it'd be common courtesy - not to mention good business sense - for you to get a fellow employee who DOES understand English. This interaction reminded me of past experiences here when the cashier was aloof (at best). Maybe the employees are like this with ALL English-speaking customers? I don't know. For me, though, I see a pattern. If you are visiting from out of town, and/or if you don't speak French well, I think I'd advise you to skip this store, despite the wonderful gourmet foods they have here. You sure won't get a feel for warm "Montreal hospitality" here, that's for sure. Oh, and they no longer carry Gibby's salad dressings, too - at least, I don't think they do.

I found Fruiterie Val-Mont on Google, and loved it the moment I walked in. (In the US, there really aren't small corner stores with this level of product diversity and quality. Beyond that, the people are so nice, and the layout of the store, despite it's small size, makes it easy to wend your way through and get your shopping done. They have an extensive fruit and vegetable section. But some of the other departments were the real surprise. An incredible selection of cheeses, pates, meats, and wine, as well as spices and other lovely things. Since I"m staying in an apartment, I'm reconsidering going out to eat so much! Overall, I'm a fan of patronizing small, neighborhood stores who serve a local community. But this store is a real treasure. I'm sure I'll be back tomorrow, and probably the day after.

Although the outside looks like just another fruit stand, Val-Mont is a gem of the east Plateau…read more Inside, you'll find fresh fruits and veggies at great prices, a small but well-curated selection of hard ciders (yum!), spices, fresh breads and pastries, an extensive cheese and deli counter, bulk dried fruits and nuts, coffee, chocolate...pretty much anything you need to live and eat well. Prices aren't dirt cheap, but they're comparable to the big shops for most things, and often lower on produce, which tends to be better quality here too. Often, you can get big packages of fruits for $1 on special, which is how I like to roll, especially in smoothie season. Yum, yum.

It's one of those places that could bring extra value to your budget and a place where you might walk in for one thing and then grab a bunch of other things that weren't on your list, but catch your eye. For example they had a large bag of fresh bread rolls for 2.49 and also nice looking mini croissants and pitas. There are a bunch of shelves to one side with a bunch of shelf staple goods, canned goods and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean products. Many things that would have been potentially tasty, but this was just a fast and unexpected visit. They also have a selection of prepackaged veggies like a bunch of sweet peppers into 'value packs'. Another notable thing is that it's all laid out in a compact one room space, so it gets high marks for convenience. I already mentioned it, but one thing that's a real highlight is the value, so bring empty bags.

As others have said, they also make sandwiches to go, which one can choose to eat at their little parcel shelf next to the door. The appeal of this place for me, though, is the partially-smoked and cured pork shoulder rolls they keep in the small cold case along the back wall. They're not even labelled, so you may have to ask to be pointed at them. But do ask. One of those balls of meat, simmered in a cauldron of water for 150 minutes, yields both the most densely-flavored, tastiest cold pork you'll ever put on your sideboard, and a pot of truly magnificent stock for your next pea or white bean soup. They also sell a couple of different varieties of bacon, in slabs if you wish. And there is no question too stupid for the bright lady in the baseball hat behind the cash. This is another of those little places that makes cooking my way through a Montreal winter into something I almost look forward to in summer.

The marinade is very simple (oil, paprika, steak spice, salt, pepper) and not overpowering. With a cast-iron pan and some animal fat for frying, you can make a restaurant quality meal in no time. Another great thing about this place are the wonderful Italian products they import. The other day, Dino had me try some special Mortadella he had imported (the name escapes me). It was soft, perfectly flavoured and melt-in-your mouth good. If you're looking for a butcher in the Plateau/Mile-End, look no further. Chez Vito ranks among the top 3 butchers in the city and his prices are very reasonable.
