My experience was quite different from the other reviewers…read more We went for a trial class but were not welcomed at all. The instructor did not even introduce herself to the new students or the parents. I guess the studio must be doing well with enrollment because our instructor seemed quite apathetic to forging a connection with us or the new students. The instructor's tone was harsh and severe throughout the entire class. She also seemed a bit stressed and it was quite visible and audible in the way she interacted with the class. As a former ballet dancer myself, I understand the discipline, the critique, the perfection, etc that comes with learning ballet. I did appreciate the structure, the intro to a little bit of technique, etc but I would have liked to see a more warm/kind way to introduce the youngest budding dancers to ballet. My 3 y/o follows instruction well. She was quite excited and happy to try the class. It's in her nature to follow the rules and do a good job. She said she "tried her best, and it was fun but the teacher was mean" so we'll continue searching for the right fit!

She insults them when she spats at the entire class, baiting them with "WHY ARE YOU HERE?? NO ONE KNOWS WHY THEY'RE HERE!!".... She places beginning students deep in the back row, giving b.s. excuses like she does that so they're able to follow experienced students better. This could be helpful but even the experienced students are a little off from Tika at times. And then she yells "ARE YOU EVEN PAYING ATTENTION?" at the beginning students for not being able to follow her exactly. She stops the dance throughout class to berate the entire class. Everyone, as a whole, she talks down to. No one is goofing, chatting or not paying attention and she still flips out acting all insulted because we aren't understanding the cultural or historical significance of the dance. Meanwhile many, many of the dancers are of actual Latina or Caribbean descent and don't need to be scolded on our heritage. And she now speaks with a weird, b.s. fake accent. She didn't used to have one! I actually used to take samba classes with her, as students, back in the early 2000's. Same attitude, no accent. In a time in the world there is so much negativity and hostility towards others, this is the last thing I want to experience (and pay for) when going to dance. Can we all try to start with kindness, love and give the respect that we all deserve?

I actually have an aversion (well...deep down it's a strong affinity) to mirrors…read more Seriously. Since I was a kid I've been making an uber bizarre mirror face- whenever my reflection is presented before me. It's a weird mix of Blue Steel meets Top Model. I can't help but give face to any and every mirror that I come in contact with. It got so bad during middle school and high school that I never got any work done when I was in my room. I would sit vainly in front of my bedroom mirror and just stare at myself. Stare at myself doing work. Stare at myself no longer doing work. Stare at myself dancing instead of work....the list goes on. My parents finally decided an intervention was in order and promptly removed my massive bureau mirror from my room. A wave of relief overwhelmed me - once that big dominant mirror was no longer a profound presence in my room. I became about 12 percent more productive that day (though all of my CDs were promptly used as substitutes and till today most of my CD collection is smeared with makeup and finger stains...le sigh). And.... so it's a strange thing for me to actually celebrate and crave mirrors such as the ones that Mobu boasts. I've taken two hula-hoop lessons here and the large expansive mirrors which line this intimate studio have been key players in helping me conquer or at least try to tackle difficult hula-hoop moves. When this studio is not in use - you can rent it out for a fairly nominal fee - and it is beyond worth it. It is beyond what's up to have a darling studio where you can drop a hula-hoop loudly on the ground and no one cares (sorry below neighbors). It is beyond what's up to have a space - where you can bust out some bumpin tunes as the hula-hoop awkwardly bumps across your shoulders. It is beyond what's up to have a place where you can go to learn a skill with personal one-on-one training. Thank you Mobu for existing. Thank you Mobu for having mirrors and allowing me to enjoy them oh so briefly. Trust.

I spend the entire class smiling and laughing because it is just a really fun, creative and inviting environment, and Hannah is a really engaging, and a great instructor. Even being a guy who has never danced in an organized fashion, I feel like I am able to pick up the choreography in Hannah's classes. She has a way of breaking things down in simple terms, and demonstrating all of the movements, in a way that doesn't slow the class down, but makes it easy to pick up. She is really fun and energetic which is refreshing and makes for a really fun class that is a great way to end the week. The music is great, the choreography is super fun and also challenging, and the people and environment are super welcoming. I like everything about Hannah's class and I cannot recommend it enough to ANYONE. Whether you are an experienced dancer looking for fun, challenging dance, a beginner like me looking for a fun way to get exercise, or someone just trying to be active in the community and meet fun new people, I highly recommend coming out and giving this class a try. Oh and by the way; it is incredibly affordable and very conveniently located right on Church Street, feet away from the J-Line in the heart of Noe Valley, right near 280 and 101.

Ok, so not too long ago I got home from my very first lesson at Zaccho and I am in LOVE. Before the class began, I knew I would be calling this place home. I want to start off by saying that I thought the Aerial Dance class for adults was going to be taught only on hoop and tissue. Traditionally speaking, one would think, right? To start, you get to play on single point apparatuses which include rope, tissue, trapeze, ladder, and something called a "window." For the love of God, I hope I got those names right. Someone, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Furthermore, the instructor is very sweet and patient. She made me feel very comfortable and safe. And for any money conscientious person, this place far exceeded my expectation for the price. Anywhere else this class could easily be $45 if not more. I am still on ecstasy from the class. [sigh]

The glowing reviews for Dance Fridays seem to be an attempt of the new organizers to get away from all the other negative reviews while not really changing things that resulted in a bunch of bad reviews in the first place. First off, they CHARGE FOR TAP WATER. You read that right, a dance venue with a cover charge ($10-$25 per person) charges for TAP WATER. I've travelled and danced all over the US and this is a first. I don't think I need to explain why this is ludicrous to people who have ever gone dancing. Secondly, the bachata room is much smaller and has NO FANS. So when you get super overheated from dancing in a crowded room with no fans, you can't even get free tap water to cool off. And the cherry on top was the guards kicking me (a woman on my own) out of the building at 1:30 am in a seedy part of town instead of letting me wait for 15 min inside until my Lyft arrived. They were not leaving to go home, they just stood there and smoked.

I used to come here every now and again for the dancing because I always loved the vibe here. Lessons start at 8pm. It's a perfect spot for beginners, and every now and again, you'll find a more seasoned person who joins the lessons. Salsa and Bachata seem very natural to me, but I'm very much a novice. With that being said, I feel super comfortable to show up alone, do the lessons, and get out on the floor. The beauty is diversity: Younger, older, men, women, beginners and advanced people all mix it up. Ladies, all you gotta do is hold tight and wait for an invitation, and you'll be dancing all night. No weirdos (at least not that I've encountered yet), no negativity, and just all around good times. Here's a little tip: Sign up for the text alerts, and they offer early bird tickets for $10 on Mondays. After that, the price goes up. And if you pay at the door, the price could be $30 or $35; I think it depends on the night. Thanks 550 for staying true!
