This was a Mariano's store that I appreciated and enjoyed a lot. I considered it somewhat of a hidden gem, being a bit out of the way from Streeterville. I recalled when someone told me that you could go to Mariano's for meals cooked at the store. They told me that you could select a cut of beef, and they would grill it at the store for you. When I was in school, I went with this precise plan in mind to this Mariano's at 333 East Benton Place in Chicago. I had a lady friend accompanying me. We selected well-marbalized and excellent-appearing steaks. We also chose a bottle of wine. The food was high quality, and it was fun. Whomever grilled the steaks did an excellent job. We also found wine that was good quality and not too expensive, which was great on a student buget. For a grocery store, I thought this was an awesome experience. Mariano's stores have a classy vibe. They exude an aura of quality. Their stores have an excellent ambiance. When I walk in, I notice the stores are well-organized with phenomenal displays. I value that Mariano's stores typically have a wide variety and selection. I have appreciated the ability to obtain prepared foods at Mariano's, including delicacies like sushi. I have found other great prepared foods at Mariano's that I enjoyed a lot, e.g,. succulent beef pot roast. It is fantastic that Mariano's have self checkout kiosks, which can help with convenience. There are also a significant number of Mariano's stores in Chicagoland. read more

Self checkout: it is so annoying that your store requires the agent to conform no bag. Jewel, Whole Foods, etc don't require it. Just for this reason, I almost never go to Mariano's anymore. Used to go 2-3 a week. read more

Every single time that I buy ice cream from the Mariano's at 333 East Benton Place in Lakeshore East in Chicago, the ice cream containers are not frozen and are actually soft and squeezable to the touch when they are supposed to be frozen because it is ice cream. I have never experienced this at any other grocery store in my life. I have been shopping at this particular Mariano's since 2013 and I spend many thousands of dollars every single year at this particular Mariano's. This is an upscale grocery store in an affluent neighborhood and the residents of this community pay your high prices every day, so how about replacing the freezer so I no longer have to buy soft melted unfrozen ice cream and then take it home where I have to put it in my freezer and freeze it before I can eat it because the poor customer service management will not replace a freezer that very clearly needs replacing. This is not good customer service and amounts to poor store management and poor treatment of customers. I mean, I can buy frozen ice cream from the ice cream man that is frozen and not melted, so why can't I buy frozen ice cream at my neighborhood grocery store?? read more

Mariano's New Eastside lets Instacart shoppers with multiple orders monopolize the checkout lanes while regular customers wait. Management's response was, "We treat all our shoppers the same." That's great for efficiency and profits, but it's poor customer service. In-person shoppers--especially seniors and those who can't use self-checkout--shouldn't have to stand behind what amounts to a commercial checkout operation. Mariano's needs either a dedicated Instacart lane or a policy requiring multiple-order shoppers to get back in line after each transaction. I came to buy groceries, not wait behind someone running a small delivery business from the checkout lane. read more

In a neighborhood with only very high prices, it's surprising to find a supermarket with reasonable prices. If you're staying in a hotel nearby, a visit here will keep your budget in line, it's a full supermarket so you can get all sorts of goods here. There's a nice park outside, so I ended up enjoying getting picnic food here, eating al fresco while meeting dogs (lots of dogs in this neighborhood) much more than the restaurant meals I had (it's a low bar, so many mediocre overpriced poor service restaurants around here). read more

Probably the worst grocery store on planet earth. I can't count the number of times I come in and there are no carts. Imagine a grocery store with no carts. It's been a problem for years without resolution. In almost every shopping trip there is a pricing error. Good products are discontinued for lack of sales so they stock a hundred of another item. Every chance they have they cut corners to save pennies. Cheap produce bags. Weak paper shopping bags. Crummy plastic containers for the salad bar. No human cashiers on level 4. Terrible self-checkout machines that accuse you of stealing or can't recognize actual products from personal items like sweaters and purses. It's a joke. I pray for Kroger to dump this store and let a Jewel come in but as of yet no luck. If I could give this store a minus score I would. The only plus is friendly employees. read more

-The parking here is an absolute rip off. They say two hours free, have no way to validate, then send crazy high bills for parking later. You can try to dispute but they just re-explain the "policy" despite it being marked..no where. -One time I went and the parking garage malfunctioned and the door would not open at all so just lines of people are stuck. -The Stan's here is absolutely nasty. I got a sandwich that was rock hard, egg was bluish, and the coffee my partner got tasted like the cold brew was very, very off. -Also the store smells like rotten fish and garbage sometimes. read more

I live across the street from the store and have shopped it since it opened 10 or 11 years ago. Every time I make a purchase at the store, I have a conflict. Unabating concerns and issues include the disrespectful employees, inconsistent pricing and overcharging, and lack of food freshness, especially in the produce department. I believe I am seen by certain employees as a troublemaker because I do try to defend myself against irresponsible employees and price gouging. After being accosted and attacked by one shopper pushing his cart to one side or another who became hysterically enraged because I touched her asparagus (prior to purchase) on the conveyor at the checkout lane, I decided to have my groceries delivered. It has not worked out any better. I still am overcharged on sale items, by $30 on one order for which they gave me a store credit, rather than crediting my card. They refuse to refund my Boost membership fee. Following a 11/2 hours on the telephone today, being transferred 5 or 6 times and never reached a resolution, I have decided thatI am unable to deal with their incompetence and irresponsibility any longer. They can find someone else to take advantage of and bamboozle with their illegal overcharging schemes. I hope that this review is helpful. It is harsh but true. read more

I have been shopping here in Lakeshore East Mariano's for years. It has been going down hill since its arrival 8-9 years ago. Today, and again, the escalator heading down to ground level from the store was out of service. BOTH inside store elevators were broken to get the meats and vegetables. One entire freezer cooler, near where dairy is, was completely dark and out of service. The customer service is great! Unfortunately, the shopping experience is gross! And, getting worse!! read more

My first visit to Lakeshore East because I wanted to check out their Marianos. First, it's so hard to find this area, and when you do, it's feels so isolated. Finding this Marianos was not easy either and I almost missed it. Saw Bockwinkles on my route and it was easy to spot. Once inside, I was looking for a variety my Whole Foods does not carry. I strolled the aisles and due to their bizarre layout, almost missed half the store. I did find a couple items but that's about it. I am giving it 3 stars because the cashier was so friendly, and the store seemed clean. I get they have little rooI to work with. Stuffing 10lbs of potatoes into a 5lb sack does not work for me. I am sure I will return at some point in the future, just not the near one. Happier with the Streeterville/River North food options. read more

Family enjoyed the food there though when going to the cafe, service was sub par. Employees said they were closed but couldn't answer when it closed. I really like the location of this Mariano's in Lakeshore East. The neighborhood is pleasant and attractive. It is also close to my office so that is a great bonus. There are a ton offices and residences so a grocery store is great to have so close by. There is a nice open-air plaza that offers al fresco dining. Sometimes during the summer, there's a guy grilling. They also decorate for holidays. Inside there are two floors that offer everything without having a large footprint. It's great to start at the top floor and make your way down, since the checkout lanes are there. They do offer self check out if you just have a couple of things. I love their produce, bakery and floral departments. Thet also offer hot and cold food bars, sushi and warm cookies. With validated complimentary parking, shopping here is made super easy. read more

I used to love this Mariano's location. However, the garage I used to park at seemed to transition from genuine parking garage owners to complete scam artists this past fall. I believe the garage ownership is currently under a "company" called Metropolis. I wanted to know exactly what the scanning timing/cost would be as they advertise 120 min free outside the garage (still as of late). The employees of Mariano's had no idea and directed me and other shoppers to "workers" in the garage who were supposed to take care of it with an app. Keep in mind that I had Always previously been able to validate in store, so there was never any question of being charged by a license plate scanner when I left. Regardless, I ended up getting charged almost twenty dollars for being over the limit by 8 minutes. I could not reach a customer service rep for over a day, and with that they chastised me for not knowing a "30 minute rule" that was not posted anywhere in the garage. Seeing as this is all according to a policy that they did not clear with workers or even bother to change the validation signs in the store or garage, I am done going to this location. read more

This location is quite convenient. Has a great potential to be a better than just an ok grocery store. It's a little cramped, but understandably so. A little dirty upstairs around the lounging area as well as the bathrooms. Has a great selection of groceries. Appreciate the wide aisles and elevator. There was a water leakage and a pool of water upstairs around deserts refrigerator area with no "wet floor" which was a little slipping hazard. It could have been a good idea just to simply mop that pool of water and put up a sign for ppl like me who stepped in it. Again I believe it's an ok grocery store that has a great Potential, just minor issues that can be taken care of easily. Hopefully they will take heed and fix their ways. read more

Their wine selection is as good as some wine shops and they know their stuff...in this case, even the guard knows wines! They even advised us on the sales. I talk about their wine department because of the great service we had yesterday. It was the same in the flower department, 2 weeks ago and the cake department a month ago. I hosted a wine tasting here on a Friday evening. It is a really nice grocery store. It has a lot of space inside the grocery store including Nob's bar and attach garage parking. I was really impressed with the wine bar and the live music that they have on Friday nights. The greatest thing is that they will give you a 120 minutes of free parking with any receipt. OMG! I called over to this particular store. It took me a total of five whopping phone calls just to get an answer to my question. I called the store and inquired if they had marscapone cheese. The first guy hung up on me. The second girl who answered the phone was extremely sarcastic! I had finally reached a lady named Natalie who was melting like a snowflake just because I had asked her if they sold marscapone cheese. She said they did not sell it but I happen to know for a fact they do sell it because I purchased it before. My husband called her back and asked her about the cheese and lo and behold!!! They do sell it folks! They were just out of stock. Why? Why would this woman tell me that they do not sell the cheese when they do? I wanted to make tirimisu for Thanksgiving but I'm heading over to Whole Foods where they treat you with respect! Needless to say I won't be returning to shop at Mariano's any time soon! Today we decided to try their specialty hot drinks upstairs at their coffee shop, Vero. Well we ordered two lattes, one of them a limited time BELLA LATTEE, with almond milk. When our ordered came out, my husband and I both looked at each other like "what is this". The froth was soupy so I took mine back. My husband tried to see if he could get by with his. When I approached the register, I was asked my one of the girls there, Leslie. When I explained to her the situation she looked at me with a mugging face and just stared at me like "ugggg okkkkay go grab a seat and I'll call you" and rolled her eyes. I didn't pay much attention to that since, since I was really looking forward to my latte. When my husband brought the latte back to me, he mentioned that it was super hot and to be careful. I opened the lid and was very dissatisfied and disappointed bc they obviously have a lack of training of SPECIALTY HOT BEVERAGES, or simply they don't care. Well my husband took both of our soupy scalding lattes back to the register and Christen apologized and was very sweet, and instructed us on taking our receipt back to the front customer service area and get our money back. Well this is where it totally got very uncomfortable and very insulting. The girl, Leslie, who made my latte, was asking Christen what was going on. She went all ballistic and loudly and sarcastically stared saying " oh well don't worry about it that lady is crazy and who cares" etc and as soon as she noticed that I was looking and noticed she was talking about me, she looked the other way real quick. That was just so unprofessional I almost felt like walking over there and telling her a thing or two, but I am better than that and went to a manager instead. read more

Down a star it goes! Is it a requirement that nearly every city Mariano's needs a terrifyingly small space in which to park and maneuver? Even entering the garage is enough to make anyone nervous, given how narrow the opening for each car is, both in and out. There's just not enough here. The meat counter was out of chicken thighs, a common item, and the section with granny smith apples within the produce department had at most ten, over half with tons of disgusting bruises. Mind you, this was the case at 11am on a weekday, not exactly the end of the day, and far from a busy time, either of which would excuse a lack of abundance. There might be a lack of communication among staff. I asked someone on the top floor if I could check out with my, er, many items, seeing how small the checkout counters were. She said yes. When I pulled up my cart, someone at the checkout told me I had to go downstairs. ?? I'm not impressed with this one. I might be back to it, but it's a hassle just to find many important - not to mention common - items are out of stock. read more

W.O.W.!!!!! And that wasn't just my reaction--as I weaved through the crowds in here the day after opening, I heard other people gasp and ooooh and aahhhh at the offerings in here. This two-story market is impressive and puts Whole Foods to shame. And their prices are cheaper than Whole Foods. This market was desperately needed in this location and the people flocked to it in droves as soon as it opened. So what does Mariano's have? In short, everything you'd find in a grocery store plus: --a bakery section with some amazing and unique cakes, fresh breads, and yummy desserts --meat, deli section --fresh fish counter --international foods --upstairs, fresh salad bar, made-to-order sandwich station, soup station (split pea and chili are my favorites so far), pizza station, outdoor grill section where they will grill you a fresh fish sandwich for lunch!!! --and I saved the best for last, there's a liquor store in here, aisles and aisles of wine and huge beer selection!!! And get this, you can CREATE YOUR OWN 6-PACK of beer!!! They have assorted bottles and for (I believe it was) $8.99, you can create your own beer sampler. So cool. Plenty of outdoor seating for people eating lunch on their terrace, friendly service throughout the store, parking is free for first 45 minutes with validation. This was my first time at a Mariano's (I live in the Detroit area) and my Lyft driver told me that they put Dominicks out of business, which mildly amused me because I grew up in this area and Dominicks was my grocery store at the time. I'm staying at a nearby hotel and needed some hot tea. A Chicago friend told me that I could come here and purchase some from their coffee shop. I had no idea that they are owned by Kroger until I went searching for cough drops and found some cheap Kroger brand ones. The grocery store is kind of off the beaten path, you have to go down a path next to the Blue Cross building to access it. It also has two floors and there is an elevator in case you have a cart and want to go up or down a floor. I got a chai tea latte and it was very reasonably priced, I think about four dollars for a 20 oz. cup. I was able to add soy milk too, instead of dairy - I think for no additional price. This chain seems like it has a lot to offer and I'm looking forward to trying it out again next time I'm in the area. read more

I have never left a review on yelp in my life but this was such a horrible experience I had to- this location is impossible to find, im so confused why they would put this here and then after 40 minutes after troubleshooting directions (and I live downtown I know how to get around) and you finally get there the parking garage is horrendous It's so narrow with nowhere to park - my mom and I had an anxiety attack in there and I had to direct traffic to get her out- absolutely not ....I can't imagine how the person who designed this thought this was a good idea?! I wish I knew before I tried that's the only reason I'm leaving this If you're going without a car I'm sure it's great but I would NEVER drive there read more
