Small grocery/deli in the middle of the city. I was hoping for more produce and fresh selections than they had. Some of produce they had was not very fresh. Limp asparagus and broccoli, in particular. This is a good place to pick up frozen meals and processed food, but if you're hoping to make a meal from real ingredients, you may want to shop elsewhere if you need anything but the most basic supplies. They do have a lot of wine and liquor, so maybe it's a good liquor store with a grocery side hustle. read more

I'm a resident of the building - so this place, even with its 100% markup on prices is convenient, when I need something quick. That being said - the customer service here is atrocious. The majority of the employees, especially those who work the cash register, are flat out rude, hostile, and lazy. At any other establishment, they'd be canned. It's such a shame, because I would pay these prices, if I at least received a thank you or a your welcome - but I can't even get that..just a scowl. I'll do myself a favor and shop elsewhere, even if it's not as convenient, to avoid this awful place. read more

Just made a stop there (10 AM, March 28, 2929( and the checkout person at the cash register was not wearing gloves, I asked her to put some on, and she refused. Pros- High end alcohol - if you want it they have it, and if they don't have it they will get it and it won't take all day! A large variety of meats, cheeses, groceries and household cleaning products to save you a trip to a large grocery store. The sandwiches, soups and fresh goods are really fresh so you get what you pay for. Their staff members are well informed and friendly. This place stays busy which keeps the products fresher as a result of selling out faster than they can go bad. This business runs like a well oiled machine. Pass by this place every day on my way to work and used to frequently stop in for items. About a year ago management changed and the place has really gone downhill. The food selection is terrible and they don't seem to restock very often. The last time I bought anything there I saw, as I was paying for my ridiculously overpriced items, a bunch of huge Amazon Pantry boxes broken down behind the register... so they don't even restock from distributors, they order everything off Amazon and double the price. They have a deli available to make you sandwiches and they have a wide variety of craft beers and tall boys, as well as a large variety of chilled and room temperature wines. This place is very close to work and is convenient to grab a sandwich and a snack for lunch or dinner. Their sandwiches are decent, especially the Hibas panini and the Sams Italian. It seems that there is a bit of a lack of consistency though as one worker might make the sandwich differently than another employee. My biggest complaint right now is that albeit today is Easter Sunday, I specifically called the business at 5:00 to ask how late their deli would be open, knowing they always close their deli an hour before close of business. The employee said the answer to my question is 8:00 pm. I arrived at 7:10 and found a closed deli. I'll be back to this place, as it's convenient, just apparently not reliable. read more

The Good: Good selection of almost anything you'd need in a pinch in the loop. Decent selection of frozen entrees, snacks, meals on the go, and liquor (probably their best quality since nobody else in the area is open for last-minute happy hour goods). Decently friendly staff who will help you if you ask them. The Bad: It's overpriced of course. What "convenience" store isn't? Apparently there is a $5 minimum on credit/debit purchases. Might be great to display that somewhere so patrons can plan for that little surprise before being "informed" by the staff. The Ugly: Prices are not always as they seem. I have been charged a different price at the register than was advertised with the product on multiple occasions. The first time it happened I re-checked the price and when it was as I remembered I informed the cashier who "gave it to me this time" (thanks for the favor?). A second time, the drink didn't ring up so the cashier keyed in the price which was 21 cents more than advertised on the shelf. No, 21 cents is not a huge problem. But I deserve to pay what's advertised on the shelf! I asked the cashier why they have this issue so often and he stated that sometimes they move products around and don't change the prices. Um, is this my issue or yours? Overall, decent selection and typically friendly staff. But I will do my best to go elsewhere due to pricing and scanner scamming. read more

I'm really split on this place. On one hand, it's a very nicely crafted, small grocery that has things like artisan pasta sauce and Intelligentsia coffe. Great spot to stop for a deli sandwich made-to-order or grab a decent bottle of wine on the way home. Sometimes when I'm panicked with what to make for dinner, I can swing by here and get some ingredients and then don't have to make a full-on grocery run. On the other hand, this place is pretty expensive. Some items are easily twice as much as you'd find elsewhere. Obviously they're taking advantage of the convenience factor, but it's almost criminal to charge so much for some of this stuff. Also, the staff is not friendly. Weird experience at this market today. I've been coming to this market buying a breakfast burrito and fruit for several months now throughout the pandemic. Today I didn't want meat on the burrito which has never been an issue when requested in the past but today whoever the Regional Manager is didn't like my request or willingness to pay more and basically told me I was being too difficult and told me to leave and no longer wanted my business. Why is it so difficult to remove the meat and add a few peppers and onions or spinach?? Don't need the headache to went to Pazzo's and got what I wanted. This place it the ba-zomb. Yeah, things may be a bit more expensive than many groceries, but truly, you're paying for not only super-tasty food stuffs, but the convenience of a fantastic, eclectic grocery in the upper South Loop, placed in what overall, is pretty much nothing more than a M-F business district where during the weekend, is very little more than a relative ghost town, these guys are open and they know what they're doing. While the South Loop Market on Van Buren isn't enormous, they have a relatively small, but ecletcic selection of not junk Kraft Mac & Cheese, but plenty of ethnic spices and seasonings, and not solely "American" 7-Eleven products, which usually seem to be the main option for people who live in the South Loop. Their deli counter, while again, a little small, has wonderfully fresh meats and cheeses. Plus, a they have a knowledgeable selection of beers and wines. The Market is located in the first floor of a high rise where truly, most everything for all surrounding blocks is often closed down from like, 7pm on Fridays, until maybe 8am Mondays. If you are a downtown South(ish) Loop dweller, these guys are a beacon of hope. They aren't 24/7 or anything, but they are plenty to get you through that weekend where you wanted to make something lovely for dinner, or just happened to forgot to pick some extra cat litter or whatnot. I go here at least once a week for lunch. The sandwiches are great--love the fresh Boar's Head deli meats and cheese selections. They have a punch card for frequent customers as well, buy ten sandwiches get the eleventh one free. Not a bad deal. I find the staff to be really nice, but it's probably because I'm there so often! As others have said this place is really expensive for grocery (minus the one star). The sandwich prices, though are on par for the loop. This is by far my favorite shop to go to. They always have everything I need and the atmosphere in this fine establishment is always extremely welcoming. The staff are great and very helpful. I always have a blast talking to them. They're full of integrity and are hard working. One time I accidentally left a $20 on the counter and was walking toward the door and one of the employees there named Sochi ran to me to give me my money. Most people probably would've silently kept but she ran after me to give me my hard earned money. I really appreciate that type of integrity and work ethic that the employees of South Loop Market exemplify. This is my favorite market to go to. I was hosting a workshop Friday, January 20 through Sunday, January 22, 2012. I worked it out with Jimmy from South Loop Market to deliver snacks and beverages Friday night and again later in the weekend. Sure enough Chicago gets hits with a snow storm that night. It turned out that South Loop Market did not just have snow to deal with, but also South Wacker Drive, right in front of the event venue, was closed due to construction. They had to park a distance away and then walk the items to the venue. I was expecting a delivery charge for the extra hassle. They kept to their word and did not charge a delivery fee. Jimmy shared with me his email address so I could email him my order for both Saturday and Sunday mornings. South Loop Market listened to what my situation was and helped me to find and implement as solution. They were very help and their service was greatly appreciated. read more

I live at 235 W. Van Buren and the convenience of this place is long gone for residents of the building. We had a private entrance for residents and now, this has been cut off for safety reasons (so they say). One of the workers says too many people were stealing. So now in winter, I have to dress up and walk outside to get to this place? I do dress up warmly now and I continue to walk to 7-11 on Jackson because if I have to dress up to keep warm by going outside, I may as well walk a block to save a lot of money. The beer is just as cold, it is cheaper! Their prices are much cheaper, and this is a 7-11! Or I can walk a half block more and get potato chips for way cheaper at CVS or Walgreens. Wine is about 33% cheaper. So thanks SLM! Yes, I have to dress up and go outside to get to your store but I keep on walking and the saving per year are substantial and I get some exercise. Sorry South Loop Market, you are way to expensive! Thanks for the convenience for a few months, I am walking outside in the cold and saving a lot of money, it all adds up! And your produce is expensive and old, I order from a local place that delivers and it is way cheaper! Keep your door locked, you lose! The service is great, very friendly and helpful. The wine selection is very good with a range of wines from $7 - $25. The grocery item selection is great as well. I've hardly gone in there and not found what I was looking for. The grocery prices can be pretty steep, but you can't beat the convenience. read more

It is a nice store with a really good selection of groceries, deli, food, beer and wine. However, most of the prices are insane here. I realize they are the only real store in the area, especially at night and probably have a high rent, and the mark-up on their products reflects this. They have a really nice craft beer selection, but for example the New Holland beer I usually get at Binny's for $5.99, I just got charged $10.60 with tax! Seriously? If you need basic grocery items like snacks, milk, canned goods etc. during the day, walk a couple of blocks over to CVS or Walgreen and save yourself a ton of money for the same items. read more
