I went in a spoke to Maria and was told to come back later which I did. The 2nd worst haircut of my life. She didn't even give me the mirror to see what she did, when I go home I could see why. I went to another beautician and got as much of it corrected as I could until corrected. Maria one of the owners seems to be a sweetheart. But unfortunately it seems they don't want any African-American stylist working in their salon. I have lived in Greenbelt since 2016. I have my senior cosmetologist license. And I've gone there multiple times to see if they were hiring. They always say they're going to get back to me and never do. I called today and they said they probably would not be hiring for the next two years. She said it was because business was slow. This would be ideal for me as I know people in the community and I could walk right across the street to work. I also can bring much business to her salon which she says is so slow. I wish I could give zero stars. Everything about this was the worst haircut of my life. The entire thing was less than 5 minutes start to finish. I had extremely long hair that went past my rib cage. I asked her to cut 4ish inches since I hadn't had it cut in almost a year. She figured that since hair grows 1/2 inch a month I needed her to cut 6 inches. So I showed her exactly where I wanted it cut. I took my hair out of a braid (so it was wavy) and she sprayed it with a little water and I thought she was still kind of looking at the length in the back and next thing I know she hands me about 8 inches of hair and says "is that good?" No! It was way too much but there's no going back now! Then she has me stand up and she continues cutting, one handed. She never wet the front of my hair nor even brushed it out. She also didn't even acknowledge my face frame so now i just have random bits of hair in the front that are shorter than the rest but it's not really a frame because it's just a bunch of split ends that didn't get trimmed. When I got home I actually wet my hair and brushed it out and I have three distinct lengths across the back (probably corresponding to the three strands of the braid and the waves caused by it), all on a slight diagonal sloping down to the right. It took me longer to find a parking spot than it took her to destroy 3 years of hair growth. Now I have another appointment scheduled for tomorrow to cut even more off to even it out. read more

Really sorry to hear about the previous review. Don't let anyone talk to you that way, ever! I went to Maria today 1/24/15 on a first time whim. Just needed a quick trim to get the dead ends off. She understood and cut along with the layers that were already there. Very nice. Great conversation. $20 The place smelled like old, dirty carpet like places in Old Greenbelt tend to do. (Beijing, Siris, Sir W. Religh) But I was only there for 30mins. Oh and the seats have accumulated what looks like to be cat hair. Bottom Line: I wouldn't go here as my regular salon but I will come back for aquick trim (probably not a cut). Always go to Maria unless you know the other ppl. read more

Anyone who writes a 7 paragraph complaint has a personal agenda and should be regarded as not credible. I have gone to Maria's for years and can attest to the professionalism and expertise of everyone who works there. The place is always clean, organized and full of customers. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because i have to drive 45 minutes from my home just to get there....but the drive is worth it! read more

Do NOTgo to this salon. I went in to get my hair colored and cut before a big family event, Maria dyed my hair red as I requested but she left it on for WAY too long and my whole scalp and forehead was also dyed red and it would not wash off. It has been over a week and a half now and my scalp is still dyed. I left the salon in tears and spent the rest of the day scrubbing my forehead before I flew to see my family the next day. I have never had to walk out of a salon without paying before but I was not going to pay someone who ruined my hair. I repeat: do not go to this salon! read more

We had the pleasure of meeting a very special Angel today; Ms. Maria (owner) - - our first trip to her shop and I can tell you - - she is amazing and so caring. She sensed that my husband and I were under distress; and comforted us with care and compassion - ensuring us that God has our Son and we need to continue to Pray every day from the bottom of our hearts. My husband received an amazing haircut as well - - God is good and sent us to Ms. Maria for a reason. We are from out of town; and only in the area b/c our son is at PG Shock Trauma in a coma for almost a month now. Highly recommend Maria; for a great cut and a caring attitude. Choose your stylist carefully. Ak, I'm really sorry to write this, as I'd love to support a local business, but I got the worst hair cut and colour experience of my life at Maria's. It was really awful, and left me quite upset (and I still am when I think about it)- and I'm not usually so melodramatic about my hair, or hard to please. In fact my friends remember this experience because of how upset the haircut left me, and how bad it looked. I believe the stylist I had was called Donna (she had long red curly hair). When I called Maria's this is who Maria said would take good care of me and I set up an appointment over the phone. When I went in for the appointment this woman told me loudly and publically, actually over the head of another client, what terrible condition my hair was in, and that she'd need more time with me to fix the disasterous color of grown out highlights. I should have called it off then after that publi shaming in the shop. Instead I sheepishly agreed that I hadn't taken care of my hair and my sister had put in some highlights for me 6 months earlier taht were grown out, etc, and I reshceduled for when she would have more time to deal with my terrible hair. The thing is, since I had a scheduled appointment, couldn't she have found a couple of minutes to step aside and talk to me about it, rather than embarrassing me over this lady's head, who was in a swivel chair and forced to watch? The morning of the rescheduled appointment Donna called my cell phone twice to postpone the appointment time, once when I was about to leave for it because it was only 15 minutes from the appointment. When I get to the salon for the new time I beat her there and she arrived late anyway. She convinced me I needed colour all over to balance out and fix the terrible old highlights. During the couple of hours I spent there it was far from a relaxing experience. She had a friend visit her who she argued with for over an hour as she did my hair, clearly getting upset and frustrated with this friend. It was so far from relaxing and actually awkward. I couldn't wait to get out of the situation. The end result with the color was expensive, as color is, and my hair looked just the same as the "terrible" color it was when I went in. My best friend was suprised I'd had anything done with the color because after all that expense it really wasn't noticably different to the "terrible" colour she told me needed correcting to begin with. The worst thing, however, was the cut. She complained about the condition of my hair and just kept cutting and cutting saying she needed to take off more split ends. It ended up a completely different style to what I'd asked for and several inches shorter. Just a mess. It was bad enough that 6 weeks later my kind friend told me my hair was really suiting me more and more as it got a bit longer, which was her way of saying, don't worry, it's not such a hiddeous mess as it was a few weeks ago. Honestly, I was having several inches off, so I find it hard to believe I needed even more inches because of split ends. And if she'd cut as I asked and given me the choice I would have chosen to have some split ends over losing my hair style and length. I had it done to cheer myself up because I was pregnant, and enormous, and had acne for the first time in my life. Instead I added my worst ever haircut to the mix. I held off writing this review in case I was unfairly critical or hormonal at the time. It's been a year now, and I'm still upset that my hair looked the way it did that Christmas and for the photos with my new baby. I hate to speak badly of a local business. I think the individual vs the business is what made the difference. Please ask for Maria or another stylist, as I have heard good things about Maria herself. read more

I have been there and every time the place has been clean and so welcoming to everyone that enters the shop. I have received coffee, tea, water anything I need and always greeted with a warm and clean atmosphere. There is always some baked goods and treats along with the best decorations for each time of the year. Maria runs a wonderful business and every stylist is a professional with each customer leaving with a smile and pleased. I have been there every week and always am pleased with everything.
