We've been here twice. You'll find the standard Mexican food combinations, which we crave from time to time, and everything is freshly prepared and tasty. Marias has been on the Abbeville Square for as ling as I can remember. The Restaurant is clean, waiters and waitresses are friendly and courteous, continually checking back if you need additional drinks or etc. Eat In or Pick Up, Marias food is always a treat at very reasonable prices. Have tried many items on the menu and all are excellent. If you haven't tried their Chicken Breast and Rice Soup, you truly are missing out! It is a light red base broth, with Fresh chicken, veggies and sliced guacamole. They make it fresh daily. If I do not have it with my meal, always get a quart to go for Dinner or the next days lunch. We hadn't been there in a while and now we ALL remember why.. My meal the Taquitos Mexicanos $12.60. A salad in the middle of 4 taquitos. For this price you would think you could get a scoop of rice & Beans. The Texas Fajitas 16.95 4-shrimp, less than a wing size of white meat and the flank steak hardly existed. If you are vegetarian the onions, bell peppers and tomatoes were abundant. It came sizzling to the table steamed my eye glasses. It stayed warm while I picked through all the vegetables looking for the shrimp. The#6 Combo had no traditional hispanic flavors very bland @10.90 a plate. My other challenge with this business adds 3.50% additional charge for using your debit or credit card. Additional .50cents for a take out box. (taking the lettuce hm or the chickens) I also didn't get a receipt. I happened to have cash, paid 45.00 for three meals and 1 ice tea the others had water that kinda tasted like diluted dirt. Needs a filter on the water tap. Service was good as the 1 waitress would hurry by everything ok? Chips were not warm fresh out of a bag. Unfortunately, this was the worst dining experience I've encountered in a long time. I should have left when it was virtually empty of customers, but my great grandson and I were going to a concert and didn't have time. I have ordered chicken and cheese quesadilla's in many states and they included salsa, cheese, sour cream. The one I received was an appetizer size and I was charged 4.00 or 4.50 ea. for the tiny queso cheese, salsa, and understandable charge, although still high for the amount, of quacamole received. The queso was like water and ran off the chips. Nothing to brag about. Grandson's food was $9.50 and was okay... burrito, rice, beans. Total $31.00 plus tip, although waitress was not at all friendly, I tipped my usual tip for waitresses realizing that's about all they make. Never return restaurant for me. read more

This one needs a little bit of thought. I'll start off with saying that the food was actually pretty good. In summary, once all of our food finally came out and our family was able to eat at the same time, after numerous reorders... the food itself was very good. That being said, the staff in general is pretty poor. Our server had numerous mistakes, which I will elaborate on, but the manager working there also seemed very versed in covering for her mistakes. I'll do my best to leave out assumptions, but it seemed due to their flirtatious working relationship. What usually comes wrapped in foil on a platter? Tortillas, right? That's pretty common knowledge, even for someone who isn't in the service industry. She brought out tortillas in foil and argued with us when we said, "I'm pretty sure this isn't a taco." She took it back to the kitchen, came out with foil AGAIN, and then argued with us that it was correct. She didn't know the price of a pitcher of beer, which is usually helpful, and brought us out a half pitcher (which is fine) but charged us for a full pitcher. $9 for two Bud Lights in SC is unheard of, so it seemed pretty obvious, but she had a very hard time accepting the mistake. By this point we've had numerous mistakes but every time we pointed out another one, instead of being apologetic, she was impatient. It actually made us feel like we WERE one of those "complain about everything tables" but it was honestly because everything happening was... a mistake. Let's see. Tacos were supposed to come out with 3. Only 2 came out. "I can show you a menu," was her response. We said it was okay, but at the end of the meal, checked the menu. Lo and behold, it said 3. And like I said, we brought up our concerns to the manager/asst manager when we realized we might have been charged too much. He just covered her error by saying, "I fixed it," in regards to our bill, but the way that the server was talking with him... he hadn't actually informed her about her mistake. Must be used to it. Anyway, obviously complaining to management doesn't make them feel like they need to take responsibility, so the next step is to just never go there again, and encourage others to speak up if they receive the same lack of quality. read more

By far, the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten in. Actually, I wouldn't even call it the Mexican restaurant, because they obviously have no concept of what Mexican dishes are, neither how they are to be presented, nor prepared. From the get go, the chips were stale, as if the oil they have been fried in needs to be changed, or they are simply premade and have surpassed their expiration date. I inquired about the portion of a bean burrito to gauge how hungry I was. The server's response, "I hate when people ask me that." I apologized, and asked if it would be filling enough in her opinion. She flicked my rolled silverware and said "it's about that size, you might want some rice and beans with it." So I decided to take her advice and add a side of beans and rice to my burrito. Our meals come. My mother's combination plate was so full of lettuce, soggy might I add, that you couldn't even see the food beneath. She nibbled at her chalupa and burrito, but the sad, mushy-excuse for the tamale was left on the plate. It also didn't come with the husk, so you can't really call it at the tamale, can you? My plate, which was even more pathetic than my mother's, displayed a sad little pencil of a bean burrito, which was not only the size of silverware, but 2 inches shorter than the average fork. This for $4.50. On top of that, they charged me $2.20 for a scoop of bland, crispy rice, and an additional $2.20 for a splash of beans that looked like something my dog dishared, on a bad day. I ate my food, and so did my mother, because we were hungry. We had been at the hospital for 5 hours straight and were simply in search of some simple, nothing-spectacular, comfort food, but this place missed the mark by a few hundred miles. The service was awful. The servers sat in the back, barely came by to check on us, and I even had to get my own to go box, after waiting for 15 minutes. After I paid, and tipped the waitress 25%, because I've been a server, and understand that is how they make their living, I kindly informed the host that the chips were out of date or stale, and I also informed him about the quality of food, and the quality of service. His only response was, "im sorry, have a good night," as if it didn't really matter, and then went to playing on his phone, just as he had been doing when we were waiting 15 minutes for a box. Will DEFINITELY never eat there again, and will warn anyone I know to steer clear. read more

The menus is extremely localized and not authentic Mexican food. I got a shrimp dish and the shrimp were horribly over cooked and the vegetables were barely cooked. The cheese dip is very watery. Asked for no tomatoes and salad was covered in pico (tomatoes) there was no avocado or cream on salad. I was extremely disappointed and wish more places would be more authentic. Service was good. Maria's has gotten better over the years. I, personally, am not a fan of mexican food...but this place is alright. Really good atmosphere. Parking is usually a bitch. The one reason I don't like is because if I get dragged there by a group then I usually am NOT in the mood for mexican food, and I order a burger and fries. Forgetting, every time, that this is the one item on the menu where you pay $7 for a fist-circumference patty on a huge bun and a couple of "nothing special" fries. read more

Incredibly sub-par Mexican fair. My chile relleno wasn't a poblano pepper at all, but actually a quarter-chunk of gross looking bell pepper! Unforgivable at any price. Service was confused. I was actually trying to go to The Village Grille, however, because of a play happening in town this evening the wait was 45 minutes. Not knowing the cute town of Abbeville, I walked around the corner to the town square and found this Mexican restaurant. Perfect! The price was right. 8.25 for 3 chicken enchiladas and 3.75 for a small margarita. However, the food and drink was just mediocre. The "special sauce" on the enchiladas was bland. There was too much lettuce and rice on the plate. The margarita tasted like frozen sour mix. Bleh. It was worth a try, but I probably won't be returning. read more

Have been here a few times since my initial review & was told over the years they've had a few different cooks. It makes a difference! While it's not the best Mexican I've had it isn't bad. You don't go to Maria's if you want a flawless Chili's style "American" Mexican restaurant experience. But at the same time, it's not the same kind of authentic Mexican food of Alicia's in Greenwood. Maria's is somewhere between. They have the combination meals you expect...enchiladas, tacos, burritos, chalupas and more. They also have a wide array of specialty dishes like Pollo Loco, Pollo con Crema, and taquitos. Try the fajitas! And my go-to favorite is Huevos Rancheros. I HAVE to give this place the lowest possible rating and here's why: I am new to the area and some of my coworkers told me about Maria's.. and from what they told me, I expected the food to be pretty good but boy, was I wrong...I went on my lunch break during the week and when I walked in the entire restaurant was empty...I STILL stayed to eat. The server/host was very nice and friendly. I ordered the taco salad and it was DISGRACEFUL! The bowl itself was cold and greasy, no golden color whatsoever...the beef and beans were just bland and I've personally had better from Taco Bell...chips and salsa are mediocre but the salsa is a bit too runny for me and had no substance to accomodate the chips....however they do have some pretty appealing drink specials and despite the negative of my visit, I must say I enjoed my Dos Equis 16oz draft for under $3. read more

Went here today for lunch and was very dissapointed. Food was pretty good. Service wasnspow and could not understand our server. She was so quiet and rarely came back once our order was taken. Asked for spicier salsa. Two small bowls were brought to the table. When I got the bill they had charged me 2.00 for each bowl. I spoke to the be manager when paying and he snuggly replied "nothing is free". I ll never be back to this place. They could care less if you are happy with their restaurant. read more

Not sure why the poor reviews...excellent service, tasty food, delicious queso. I had Juniors Special and ate til I hurt, it was so good! Stick to your ribs good...chicken, steak and shrimp over rice and queso cheese...heaven! Margaritas were a bit watery/mix tasting ,but not bad. We will be back. read more
