Went downtown today and decided to try something different. Got the special which was 10.00 for 2 eggs, beans, potatoes, barbacoa and 2 tortillas. The menudo was a small cup. Had no hominy in it. The taste was ok. The barbacoa was a very small serving. It tasted ok but nothing fantastic. Potatoes were hard and a little dry. Eggs were good. Located in the Old Historic District of McAllen, Maria's is staple neighborhood family restaurant. My family in the area are regulars here so I stopped in to check it out for myself for breakfast. Prices are very reasonable and food quality is as good as home cooking, including the home made flour tortillas. I had the Migas a la Mexicana, which adds tomato, jalapenos, and onion to the corn tortilla and egg scramble. It is a local TexMex specialty that I crave in Los Angeles. In the photo's you may notice breakfast specials .....they now cut off at 10 am, not 11 and of course prices have gone up...4.99 if you order before 10. We were seated before 10 but ordered one or two minutes after getting our coffee and were charged more.....still good though. Locals love it so it must be good.....things have changed a bit over the years as the cashier/owner used to talk a bit and would have never upcharged us for a few minutes after 10 am for the special....oh, well! read more

I often eat alone as my husband is an invalid and I find myself out running errands and nearly always around lunchtime. When I got onto Yelp and noticed the high ratings of Maria's restaurant I wanted to try it. I love to try new places but I'm not familiar with the town of McAllen very much. I punched in the address for Maria's and kept following the routes. I ran into so many one-way streets till I got thoroughly confused but finally found the place. I had to walk a bit as the parkings lots were full or should I say spaces were full up by Maria's. It is on the street paid parking. Maria's is on the corner and it was a bright orange building. I was a bit taken aback when I walked in. It is a fairly large restaurant painted orange and hallucinogenic green with red trim. They have green checked table cloths, plastic, on the tables. There were only a couple of tables taken as it was after 1:30 pm. I ordered a plate of three crispy tacos, but I have not gotten my food yet, I just ordered so I will wait to write this until after I have eaten. OK the jury is in. My three crispy tacos were made with ground beef which is exactly what I wanted. The shells were crispy the meet was tender and juicy and they served it with lettuce and tomato that you could add on to your taco. The rice was tender and juicy and probably the best rice I've had since I've lived in the RGV which is 10 years. The tacos were served with a small cup of brown beans. I must say those beans were awesome. I've been cooking beans for 50 years and never have I have a pot of beans that tasted like those. Delicious. Gotta love Maria's! read more

My wife and I were in the area and came across this restaurant downtown. We decided to give it a try based on pretty good reviews. It's a hole in the wall type place but the food was pretty good! I ordered the Bisteck Ranchero plate that was their special of the day at $6.99 and my wife had the green chicken enchiladas at $7.99. Both plates were very good! We were both impressed with the quality of both dishes. I must say the enchiladas were better than those of Palenque Grill! Both plates were filling and satisfying in terms of quantity and the price was perfect for what we got. I would definitely come back here. Service was great, we had 2 waiters taking care of us and they were quick on refills. Chips and salsa were homemade and very good. They were also quick to bring us out food. The food here was good, the service bad You will probably have to park on the street at a meter. Our server didn't want to speak english but we got our breakfast and while trying to get syrup on the pancakes, the top came off the bottle. Someone had just filled the syrup bottle and didn't put the top on. The place is in the older part of town, so access is not as easy as a newer place. . read more

I live in Florida and when in The Valley I always have to make a stop at Marias for their enchiladas de queso, we stopped in Friday around 2 pm and as soon as we walked in we were stared down by the fat Yolanda saldivar looking salt and pepper haired lady in the register. She gave us a dirty nasty look and when I reached up she didn't even let me start speaking she just said sit yourself down I only have one waiter so it will be a while.
