Arrived there 1 week ago last Tuesday at 5:50pm. The store closes at 6. Was so excited to purchase a Lemon Pie at due to my Son and his wife bought one for me for my birthday. I loved the taste. I purchased a $17.00 key Lime, Lemon was out. I also bought a Lemon Slice, was not as good. The young lady with the noise piercing finished my sale. Within ear shot, I heard the lady behind me order a Chocolate Pie. The young lady says $8.00. I leave out the store confused as to why the person behind me charged only 1/2 of what I paid. I looked for a sale announcement, nothing indicating such. Went back in to inquire how this could happen at 6pm. She explained; because the pie was a day old....I asked her was this advertised anywhere as an I option? She looked at me like her hand was caught in the cookie jar and says "no". I left the store with the pie I paid full price; which I had no problem paying for, just wanted fairness. As a retired black elder, I just wanted to believe things could change. I guess Indiana just hasn't caught up yet. I probably will not spend my money there any longer. read more

We stopped at Marilyn's after coming up empty handed for baked goods at Remus Farmer's Market just down the street. We were greeted by a friendly person behind the counter and found lots of goodies to choose from. Their pies look great, and are bargain-priced compared to what we are used to in Chicago. They had a holiday table with toffee and other goodies. It wasn't until we left and I read the reviews that I knew that they are famous for their toffee. Something we missed out on. We ended up buying two blueberry muffins and a nut-laden banana bread. When decided between their zucchini bread and banana bread, we asked the counter person which one was better. Her answer was that she had never eaten either of them. Not a great help, and my suggestion is that employees should sample and be familiar with the product they are selling. That said, we went with the banana bread and was absolutely delicious--moist, flavorful and with a generous coating of nuts. Marilyn's banana bread was much better than the banana coffee cake that we had given our La Porte friends from a fancy-schmancy Chicago bakery--and it was a third of the price. The blueberry muffins were good, too. Not sure when we will ever be back in Hobart, Indiana, but Marilyn's is worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

I called 48hrs ahead of time to reserve two pies for thanksgiving to be picked up today, waited an hour and a half in line only to be told when I reached the counter they were SOLD OUT of the ones I ordered. Which this tells me they sold the ones I ordered to other people! Why couldn't they have called, had a note on the window, really have done anything to inform all the people in line of this, instead of making them waste their time only to be informed their preordered pies weren't available and to "come back in the morning," I've used Marilyn's bakery every year but this is the absolute last time! I have bought their toffee during the Christmas season for years. I have accounts that can't wait to get it. I bought a container for my own family. I ate a piece and thought...this is not quite the same. I had another piece and it was the same as the first piece. . Went to pick up my cake order and sat for over 45 minutes with no explanation as to why! They bring the cake out and it is sliding over to one side. They take it back to "fix" it and bring it back taped up. I start heading home and decide to check the cake and it was sliding off even more. I take it back and they ask me if there is something wrong with the cake. I open the box and show them and I get. "Im sorry " They knew when they sent that cake out it was not going to be stable. A little late for a review, but I like to tell you my story. Back in July 6th of 2022, I needed to pick up a cake for my son's birthday on July 7th as always I procrastinate. I start looking for locations in where I can get a cake and everyone was saying it would be ready the day after my son's birthday. I called Marilyn's and they told me it will be ready in a couple hours. They saved me as well as my son's birthday and the cost and taste has exceeded my exceeded my expectations. Best pies in the area but they absolutely blew it for thanksgiving. I and many others had prepaid preordered weeks ago with a specified time to pick up only the get there and have to wait in line for literally 1.5 hrs. Many people I was with waited in line only to reach the counter to find out they were out of the pie they ordered. I personally ordered 3 which they did have but one of them looked as if it was dropped and the filling was knocked out they could not replace it because they didn't have another but did refund me for it. The whole time I was in line inside the building the manager made at least 3 announcements about how they have been working 16 hrs shifts and we're tired so don't complain more less. I can understand them being tired but it is absolutely there issue that they took way to many orders they should only accept orders for what they can handly in a timely manner instead of make people wait 1.5 hrs and then complain to them absolutely ridiculous. I have ordered on holidays many times and had to wait maybe 20 min max someone deffinately droped the ball do better read more

Disappointed to give this place 3 stars. I was so excited to eat lunch here after our trip to Johnson's and was let down. First, it seemed to be understaffed. It was Labor Day so not sure if that's why. We ordered lunch and it took a while which was fine. Tons of people were coming in to pick up baked goods. We got our food and then had to wait another 5 minutes for the iced tea. We had a chicken salad croissant which had maybe 3 tbsp of chicken salad on it. I actually spotted someone else who ordered one and theirs was fine so I think this is an isolated incident but disappointing. We also had the bacon panini which was wonderful. They came with a tablespoon (seriously I'm not exaggerating) of potato salad on the side. It was bizarre, like why bother? The biggest disappointment was my kids meals. Ok the menu all they offer is a cheese or peanut butter and banana flatbread which I thought ok that's fine. We got it and it was a cold pita which they had melted a tiny sprinkle of cheese on, and the PB one was basically a swipe of PB with a few bananas on the same cold pita. it is nice it comes with fruit and a cookie. I actually felt bad for my kids that that was their lunch. On the bright side they did give us an extra free cupcake because of the wait, and the baked goods were awesome! I may try it again but not with my kids unless the menu is improved. I was so excited for them to open in St John since it's so much closer, I hope someone sees this and develops a better kids menu for that location! read more

Well was there bright and early this morning looking for a plain vanilla cheese cake. Went there yesterday afternoon and they had only the "fancy" fruit topped ones. I was told there would be some this morning. Which of course, WAS A LIE. This makes several attempts on my part to get a plain cheese cake from there. I won't be making any more. I was told they get them from the St John Marilyns. Are they the only shop baking for both? Questions and no answers. I am not going to travel all the way from Portage to St John with gas prices what they are. And this in my opinion is NOT a good way to run a business. Yes, this is a follow-up review. If I could have figured out a way to edit the first one, then I would have done so. The poor service that we encountered yesterday picking up the cake became even worse today when we served it. The cake WAS NOT their "daily signature" mandarin orange cake with pineapple whipped frosting ... it was a plain old yellow cake with the pineapple whipped frosting. Further, of the 3 layers, only the bottom layer was an actual round cake (8 inch, I think) ... the other two layers were pieced together parts. This made cutting and serving quite a challenge. Bottom line, if you read my other review, we were indeed hoodwinked just like the caller who tried to place an order. Funny thing - I had read a review from someone who posted about a wedding cake disaster. My first thought about that review was "not possible" ... well, I was completely wrong and should have taken that review seriously. read more
