I've been a patient at Marin Dental Wellness and appreciate the clinical care I've received from the dental team. However, my most recent visit on December 30th raised some concerns I feel are worth sharing. When I arrived, my hygienist Whitney informed me that a 3D X-ray had been recommended. I believed I had already had one done, and after some investigation -- which required bringing in additional staff -- it was confirmed that the images existed in my records but had not been properly documented or billed. Whitney and Dr. Nguyen was thorough and professional in verifying that the images were indeed mine before proceeding with my exam and cleaning. What I found troubling was what happened at checkout. Without any acknowledgment of the administrative error on their end, the front desk requested an unexpected $500 payment for the X-ray on top of the $300 for my visit. When there is an oversight in record-keeping and billing, patients deserve transparency and a degree of grace -- not an abrupt demand for a large sum they weren't prepared for. I asked to go home and review my own records before paying, which I feel was a reasonable request. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I'd also gently note that the front desk experience has consistently lacked warmth. A simple greeting and eye contact go a long way in making patients feel welcome, especially when visiting the dentist can already feel stressful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I hope the practice will consider some customer service training for front desk staff.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The clinical team is genuinely skilled -- the patient experience as a whole deserves to match that standard. read more

Dr. Smith was very nice as well and he obviously knows his specialty very well, including jaw structure. He's generous with his time and I appreciate the 2-step approach i.e. physical exam them, then a review of all of the info collected before meeting again (includddbin the initial exam fee), so he can share a treatment plan. I'm in my late 60's with a mouth full of crowns and fillings so there's a ton of work I "could" do to make everything "peffect" but I never felt pressured or pushed to "buy". I did a lot of research into Bio/Holistic dentists in Marin/Petaluma and near my home in Roseville/Auburn and chose to drive 4.5 hours RT to see him, and I'm very satisfied with my decision! read more

I wish I had checked Yelp reviews before coming here. I sought out a holístico dentist who worked with Ozone and found this practice. I wanted my teeth cleaned and was told I had to have an exam first. Which is understandable. I felt as though I was in the presence of a like minded individual during my exam and appreciated that Dr. Smith had knowledge of indigenous remedies I had already been employing (chewing frankincense and pine resin). I thought it was incredibly odd that the consult portion of the exam was scheduled for 2.5 months into the future but as I don't have a major issue in my mouth, wasn't rushed for the consult. At my exam he recommended remineralizing and getting a teeth cleaning. Fast forward 2 months and I got an infection, likely via a tooth that needs filling and I began my infection protocol of oregano oil, echinacea, golden seal, and reishi along with cbd gummies, frankincense infused olive oil, tumeric and ozonated oil. A further step was clean my teeth. So I called to book a simple teeth cleaning and made the receptionist aware that I was experiencing pain and asked if they could use lidocaine during my cleaning to which she said yes. I arrived at my appointment and made the hygienist aware that I wanted lidocaine. She said she just had to check some things and "take a few shots" before cleaning just to make sure. As I laid in a vulnerable state expecting to receive the service I booked the appointment for, instead she took x-rays and then began speaking numbers while she palpated my gums. She asked if I had ever heard of a certain bacteria and that might be why my voice was raspy. She is not a doctor and had no place in offering that information especially while I was in a vulnerable state, not fully in my body due to pain and the cbd gummies. If I hadn't done a ton of self work, I could have easily allowed her to plant that seed in my mind and cause worry. I turned down a CT scan the first time I called to book an exam, at the actual exam, again while paying for said exam - they are very pushy about trying to get you to have one. Easy $550 in their pocket. I turned the CT scan down again twice in what supposed to be my cleaning appointment before I was bullied into it. The hygienist never cleaned my teeth and asked if I could come back tomorrow blaming that I hadn't had a cleaning in so long (bullshit). At the end of the appointment I was charged for an ozone treatment I wasn't told I was receiving and didn't consent to (also ozone has a smell to it, there was no smell of ozone while she was in my mouth), X-rays I didn't consent to and a CT scan I was bullied into. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The doctor was like a completely different man than the one I met. Not friendly, not helpful, wouldn't really look at me, just quickly wrote referrals to go get a root canal in Santa Rosa![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I live in S.F. The most basic way one can tell if doctors give a shit about their patients is paying attention to small details like maybe refer me to someone in SF for a procedure that renders me unable to drive. Upon contacting them requesting a refund, the office manager said she would refund the X-rays. I was to have my consult from initial exam 2.5 months prior the week following the cleaning appointment in which my teeth were never cleaned. The night before, I had a family emergency and my Dad was hospitalized. So I emailed explaining I would need to reschedule and why. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Before I could even reschedule my appointment, I received a letter in the mail stating that "due to a breakdown in doctor patient communication I would best be served elsewhere." Along with a refund check for the X-rays.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My father was in the hospital and they had the audacity to send a letter like that and not even provide the consult I paid for. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I wrote to them several times with no response and was forced to dispute the charges on my credit card.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Versus, in the midst of all this, I went and had my teeth cleaned for $75 and an exam and X-rays for $100 with a different dentist who told me a simple filling would fix the tooth in question not a root canal. read more

Then when I was in the chair, at my most vulnerable, they said they wanted a Ct Scan. I told them I didn't want this because I just had one recently at my periodontist. I told them I was not prepared to incur this expense. They invalidated my words and bullied me forward even as I was expressing concerns. I wrote a letter and received no response. Ten years ago, I got a hairline fracture in one of my molars, due to constant clenching. A couple of dentists I went to see could only offer a root canal, which kills the tooth but leaves it physically intact. Dr. Smith offered another alternative called dental bonding (gluing the crack), and topping it off with a crown. He said he could not be 100% sure it would work, but I opted to try. The work went OK and in a month I had no more pain or sensitivity. 10 years later I cracked the crown. I had to go to another dentist because of a rush situation. The dentist removed the crown and said the underlying tooth looked healthy! A week after I got the new crown, all the discomfort went away and everything is great! So, it is possible to repair teeth in some circumstances. It's important to know that in the previous four years, I've been eating a nutrient-dense, low sugar diet high in fresh produce. Your body needs a lot to overcome years of abuse, but the body also has incredible abilities to heal itself! I went to Dr. Smith because he is touted as the best for those who are dealing with complex health issues and are immunocompromised. I was having pain that my regular dentist wasn't addressing and had repeatedly heard good things about Dr. Smith and MDW. The positive: MDW has a beautiful office. The first thing Dr. Smith did when we met was to tell me I didn't need to wear a mask while we were talking (he was barely wearing a cloth mask) and he proceeded to remove his mask multiple times during our pre-exam conversation, during the exam itself and afterwards. He told me that "our noses provide much better protection than masks do." X-rays were taken. Dr. Smith said nothing about the pain I was there for. Instead he pulled out several books to show me (which he handed me to look at). I think they were related to breathing strategies but I don't remember. The office apparently only has one set of these books as another dentist came to ask for them and took them, apparently, to show his patient, too. (Is it hygienic to pass around the same books between multiple doctors and patients?) Dr. Smith's recommendations were less than helpful; to say the least. Those recommendations included trying Dr. Smith's generic sleep breathing mouthguard thing and doing Ozone therapy to clear bacteria that might be in pockets from wisdom teeth removal. The Ozone therapy recommendations started at 1k and they offered to do that on the spot. I paid $300 for the "comprehensive" consult and left. My spouse, who also saw Dr. Smith, was provided the exact same recommendations I was even though we have completely different issues. My next step is what I wish I'd done first. I came to Yelp, found the highest rated dentist in my area and went to them. They did x-rays on the spot (just like Dr. Smith had) and pointed out in the first 5 minutes that I had a deep crack through the tooth that I had indicated pain was coming from. Unfortunately, my very first dental work ever was a crown and a root canal because my prior dentist and Dr. Smith ignored the problem. It's great that some dentists are incorporating breathing and stress reduction information into their visits. However, people still have tooth issues that also need to be addressed. I waited months to get an appointment with Dr. Smith and it was a waste of time and money. Recommend avoiding if you want a dental office that takes masking and Covid safety seriously. read more

I have had 2 surgeries with Doctor Jarvis and I would give him 100 stars if I could. He used holistic approaches (ozone, aromatherapy, homeopathics, vit c IV, and laser therapy for healing.) He is kind, and I felt really safe and taken care of by Dr. Jarvis and his team. He even called me at home at 8 pm the nights of my surgeries to check on me!! Who does that?! The best Oral Surgeon I've ever been to, hands down, (& I've been to quite a few)! Dr. Jarvis is truly an amazing health provider and a wonderful human being. His diagnostic prowess is unmatched. While I consider his specialization to be strongest in detecting infections in post-extraction sites, he also offers impeccably clean tooth extractions. All procedures with minimal pain, down-time or complication. (I would know, I've been told my patient file is the thickest). Dr. Jarvis is the best dental surgeon in Bay Area. He had removed my teenage son's wisdom teeth last year. He used holistic methods, ozone treatments and made sure that there was no pain during surgery. Post surgery, my son did not have to eat any antibiotics and healed quickly. Dr. Jarvis shared his personal cell number with us and told us to contact him any time. We messaged him for any concerns that came up in the healing period and he replied promptly. I have never met another doctor in the United States who would give his patients his personal cell number. Even eight months post-surgery, I messaged him for some medical reference and he replied happily. Dr. Jarvis and his entire staff is very warm and friendly. I highly recommend him. read more

There's good and there's bad here. The good: Dr. Jarvis and his team are great. He's done a lot of work on my teeth and I've been grateful for all of it; it has changed my life. He's a seriously talented, intelligent, progressive oral surgeon. He's also retiring soon, I believe. The bad: There seems to be either a tremendous communication breakdown between the surgical staff and the front desk, or the front desk is hugely incompetent. I'm leaning on the latter, because I have showed up and stood there several times as someone fumbled around not greeting me or carried on unprofessional conversation, wasting my time and the time of everyone around me. I cannot get an answer out of them when I need one, and I cannot get something important *done* when I need it done. This has been one of the most frustrating front desk experiences I've ever had in my life, and for someone going through multiple oral surgeries to have to stand in front of slow, clueless staff with your mouth numbed, stuffed full of bloody gauze, trying to explain to someone what they SHOULD be doing for you or what you NEED that they haven't given you, is insane. How this is allowed to continue blows my mind, especially given how expensive this clinic is. Half this office is high functioning, and the other half is laughably incompetent, only I can't laugh because they're negatively impacting sick or challenged patients every day. In this post I would like to give a huge shout out to MDW newest dentist, Dr. Thomas Nguyen, whose dental work and expertise I had a chance to experience recently. Please keep in mind, I have been going to MDW in Mill Valley since 2014 and strangely enough, I look forward to every single visit. (This was never the case prior to finding MDW; I dreaded the dentists throughout my life prior to discovering their team. I always feel cared about at my two or three dental visits a year as well as trust Dr. Smith's holistic practice methods and professional office set up (for which he has taken great care to neutralize the EMFs generated by WIFI and all the machinery needed to run a super modern dental practice without the dangers of patients being zapped by typical EMFs and EMRs generated in typical dentist office.) But I digress, as this post is to not only recommend every MDW staff member as professional, knowledgeable and kind, but particularly to highlight how impressed I have been with their newest dentist, Dr. Thomas Ngyuen. When Dr. Smith was out sick in the early spring, the office substituted Dr. Nguyen to meet me for my dental appointment. I was nervous because I am so in the habit of Dr. Smith seeing me for my particular dental issues. The appointment was a delight. Dr. Nguyen took gentle care of my teeth that morning and did so with humor and kindness. I asked myriad questions which he patiently answered thoroughly. Dr. Nguyen was gracious and understood my hesitation at a last-minute change in dental providers. The appointment was flawless. I left thinking if ever Dr. Smith were to retire, I would want Dr. Nguyen to be my new dentist! This is a huge leap for me to imagine because Dr. Smith has been incredible in his meticulous care of my daughter's and my teeth since 2014. To ever imagine a dentist I could like as well as Dr. Smith would have been unimaginable until my impromptu appointment with Dr. Thomas Nguyen, in which, as mentioned, I felt completely cared for by a knowledgeable, experienced dentist who understands modern dental technology. Marin Dental Wellness is a state-of-the-art dental practice. It is an an investment in your systemic health, and worth every penny. They have never steered us in a wrong direction. My daughter and my health has benefitted beyond measure, and we both feel it from our check ups to any procedures, like having mercury amalgams safely removed. I have unfortunately endured 3 oral infections and extractions in the last 1.5 years, but thank God my dentist referred me to Dr Jarvis. I liked him from the moment we met, he is a great person, very intelligent, experienced, interesting and most importantly an excellent and caring oral surgeon. My last extraction was unusually difficult for various reasons and Dr Jarvis gave me his personal phone number if anything came up. Well let's just say he saved me from a lot of panic and fear, each time I texted him he was always calm and had an answer, mostly that's normal, don't worry and his responses were quick. This has been the best dentist I have ever been to hands down! I have had jaw pain ever since getting my bottom wisdom teeth pulled. Dr. Smith was attentive, intelligent, kind and really listened to me. We found that there has been a bacterial infection in my jaw and he injected me with ozone treatment to help heal the infection. After just one dose of ozone, my jaw pain has almost diminished and I am feeling a lot better physically and mentally. Dr. Smith also spent time with me doing an entire review of my teeth and was extremely informative. I learned so much about my mouth, jaw, teeth and health. Something NO dentist has ever taken the time for me to do. I am extremely thankful to be getting my health back because of his practice. Also,i don't believe their office bills insurance anymore. I recently had my tooth extracted by Dr Jarvis and I could not speak any more highly of him. He was so patient with me throughout the entire process and completely thorough. He is one of the most personable doctors I have ever met and truly cares about the well being of his patients. I'm now one day post tooth extraction and I'm not feeling very much pain at all. Total scam artists. The list is long but I'll just share the worst of it. 1) Smith charged me $7k for a useless dental device designed to straighten my teeth and after 2 years of wearing it, my teeth went right back to where they were. 2) High turnover with the good hygienists 3) There's one hygienist who's seemed to outlast them all that will broadcast your health history to anyone within earshot (completely insensitive to HIPAA compliance). 4) Grossly overpriced dental cleanings that literally made my insurance rep gasp when they looked up their rates. After 4 years and thousands of dollars of price gouging, I looked around at their fancy new office in Mill Valley and wondered how much of my money paid for all of it. The last time I was Dr. Smith's office I was prepped to get a bridge. He did a temporary bridge. I made an appointment for a new bridge. If I HAD gone in to get that bridge, he would have put it over a tooth that was cracked down to the bone, along with a big infection, and on a tooth that needed to have the entire crown replaced! Thank God I found another dentist who caught this right away. Also, Dr. Smith talked me in to a ridiculous mouth piece that was supposed to help with a number of things including snoring, neck aches, TMJ, and eating problems. After spending THOUSANDS on this antiquated mouth piece, NOTHING happened which led me to having 3 years of more pain than when I originally went in. One time I asked a part time doctor who I trusted, "Do these guys know what they are doing?" this was after breaking this supposedly "unbreakable" mouthpiece, and waiting for several months to get the piece back from the lab only to find that it kept coming back incorrect, (and getting billed for everything, of course) AND breaking two teeth during this whole horrible process, and this part time doctor actually said to me...." Pray to St. Raphael and know that all will be well." That wasn't the response I was looking for at all!! It was unprofessional and inappropriate! One time I went in to have that ridiculous mouth piece adjusted after several times of free adjustments (it never ever felt comfortable, just caused me more major pain) and he did not adjust the mouth piece. I started my appointment with telling him about how bad my TMJ was. He started massaging my jaw, trying to FORCE the disc back in to place, which was HORRIFFIC for me, and then he had no more time to adjust the mouthpiece. Of course it would take another 8 weeks or more to get back in for another adjustment. (and this means 8 more weeks of nothing but soft foods) When I got home I saw that I got billed $100 for the jaw treatment, which took about 10 minutes. What??? $100 for the pleasure of receiving pain? My osteopathic doctor got my jaw open in ONE visit. For 3 years they kept saying that this mouthpiece would take away the pain and readjust my jaw. But nothing ever happened. Believe me, MDW does not know how to fix TMJ. This horrible lesson cost me over 7K! Once I complained to the doctor about how rude and passive-aggressive one of the receptionists was to me and he responded, "well, she came highly recommended." What??? What about me???? When I got home, I was charged $100 for "dental education."What????? Believe me, he bills for everything. So ask first. Always. In fact just go to another dentist. A big mistake!! Dr Smith for a year did so many unnecessary entail work to my child who was traumatized by the whole experience.. thousands of dollars for unnecessary procedure and PROCEDURE THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE.. went to a reputable dentist who was able to fix the damage in a couple of visits! I have never dealt with a worst dental facility.. overcharging.. causing more harm than good.. and the one who paid the price was my poor child! STAY AWAY!! read more

I am so surprised to see the negative reviews on here. I have literally had the BEST experiences at this dentist! First off, this is TRULY a holistic dentist. I was seeing a "holistic" dentist in Los Gatos who pushed fluoride and toothpaste with artificial flavoring/coloring (not sure how that is even remotely holistic). They also severely over-used topical and injected anesthetics on me. I have a few key genetic mutations that make me sensitive to the anesthetics as well as Celiac disease yet they didn't take proper precautions to ensure I was safe. Many topical anesthetics have gluten in them and I ended up SO sick after my appointments even though I had asked them to check- I finally called and got the information on what they had used and checked myself and sure enough, there was gluten in the ones they used. At Marin Dental Wellness they are much more educated about truly holistic care. The energy in the office is awesome and the products they use and offer are top of line and truly health promoting. They understand the link between nutrition and dental health, and offer ozone treatments and other very progressive dental care treatments. The previous dentist I had worked with had wanted to take out my wisdom teeth and perform a number of other invasive procedures on me. When I sought a second opinion at Marin Dental Wellness it was such a relief for them to tell me that none of that was necessary. They take the least invasive approach and understand that the body is sensitive and dental work can impact the whole system. They gave me tools and ideas on how to get my dental health to where I want it to be without intrusive procedures and affirmed what I intuitively knew was best for my body. I also have a ton of dental anxiety and have had horrific experiences in the past with dental care and when I shared this with Marin Dental Wellness everyone was so sympathetic and understanding. They truly make you feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. They also don't push treatments on you, and work with what you are comfortable with. I never thought I would ever say that going to the dentist put me in a good mood, but I feel so elevated and happy after leaving their office. I don't hesitate to recommend them. read more

I had the most profound experience in this practice yesterday. I was traveling from Colorado and having reactions to new fillings in my teeth. Not only did the doctor fit me into his schedule on short notice but once I was there he put all things aside and had a team working on me to extract the allergen from my mouth so I could safely return home today. This is a very mediocre dentist presenting himself as progressive. Brian Smith removed some mercury fillings in what I now know to have been an unsafe manner that is now directly and seriously affecting my health. Look online for a certified Huggins protocol practitioner to remove amalgam fillings safely. He also sold me an expensive retainer device that he fitted so sloppily that it destroyed expensive gum grafts, exposing my gums to recession and has now resulted n the loss of two teeth. One of the worst mistakes I ever made was walking through the doors of his "practice". Search elsewhere for a true biological dentist. read more

My family have been patients with Dr. Brian Smith and Marin Dental Wellness for years. While the rates are higher than for some other dentists, I have been very happy with the quality of care we have received there and the knowledge of the staff regarding best holistic practices and least-toxic approaches to dental care. The practice also highlights the benefits of nutrition in combating tooth decay and gum disease, something you don't find very often in most dental practices. Overall, I appreciate this practice's focus on holistic, nutrition-based dental care, while using strategies that lower patient's exposure to environmental toxins.
