I found Dr. Epstein because of a flyer I received. At my former dentist's office, on more than one occasion I was hit with a huge bill for which I was unprepared. After finding out some crowns were going to be twice the price I had been quoted, I decided it would be worthwhile to check Dr. Epstein out. I am certainly glad I did. Dr. Epstein has wonderful skills AND wonderful billing practices. You are informed up front in a clear, written explanation of work to be done and the commensurate costs. As for the work itself, Dr. Epstein discusses your issues in an unhurried manner and explains what he is doing both beforehand and as he performs the procedures. He is highly trained and skilled, yet his prices are the most reasonable I have found. From here on out I will be entrusting him with not only my routine dental care, but also any further surgeries/implants I might have to have. Also, his lovely staff is so friendly, warm and helpful. They have accommodated my schedule over and over, and are always willing to help make my appointment times work around my schedule. Absolutely avoid this dentist if you value your time, money, or sanity. Back in 2012, Dr. David Epstein insisted I get a cleaning--even though I told him my dental insurance was maxed out for the year. I clearly said I'd rather wait until the new year when my benefits would renew, but he assured me multiple times that it would be covered. He said, "Don't worry, it's guaranteed to be paid by insurance." Then, surprise surprise, I get hit with a $500 bill. When I reminded him of our conversation and explained that I had no coverage left, he showed zero empathy and insisted I pay. I refused, and he sent me to collections--no warning, no compromise. My credit score took a major hit, and to add insult to injury, this whole stress spiraled into personal fallout. He was rude, dismissive, and didn't take any responsibility for his mistake. I lost trust, my finances got wrecked, and now I'm dealing with long-term consequences from someone who was supposed to help me. If you want to burn money and be treated like a number, this is your guy. Otherwise, stay far away. read more

Came in with a coupon $3,350 for implant, abutment and crown. He pulled one other tooth which I knew was bad but wanted to pull another an insisted I didn't need it. It had a cavity which I had filled at a fraction of the cost to pull it. I believe he wanted $1,200 to pull it and pack it with bone marrow. He's estimate was about $5,5000. Anyway after $6,800 dollars which included the implant minus abutment and crown . He wanted another 2,000 or so when I decided to pull the plug. They ignored my emails and even returned a certified letter as undeliverable. I'm in the process of suing him now. I'll be writing a follow up review after we go to court. read more

I went in for a free consultation which cost me $226 for a scan I didn't need. I knew by the end of the consultation that I didn't like this guy because he tried to make me feel guilty about my dental problems which I've had for my entire adult life. I've spent thousands on my teeth and had some great dentists. His ads are misleading. He advertises implants for $3450 but it doesn't include many of the other costs, extractions, bone graft, membrane,etc. When you total up total cost it's about the same as other dentists in the Bay Area, maybe even more. His estimate for the 4 implants I needed was over 22k and I decided to go somewhere else to have the work done. read more

Was discussing implants at a dinner and reminded me of my experience here. From other reviews looks like other people had similar problems as I did. Dental issues for implant: - Told that the crown next to the implant also needed to be replaced because it was flat and needed to be curved - Held my head with continual drilling for 5+ minutes - Had headaches for months after - Put a mesh over the implant area that fell out 4 times - Implant failed 6 months later - Went to specialist in SF to replace the implant - When the implant was pulled out, the new crown next to it was also flat - the old one was replaced for no reason at all Pricing issues for implant and two crowns: - Quoted an implant at $5,000 as cheaper than competing $6,000 from existing dentist - Turns out that price did not include the crown, given a new price when getting crown, made it more expensive than original dentist - Asked for specific written price after that, including insurance pre-authorization - After implant crown is put in, price is wrong again - Office manager refused to answer questions about pricing, clearly knew she made a mistake - Dentist called me mad that I questioned his office manager even when I caught her in several lies read more

After weeks of discussions on my dental care and pressure to have more than the 2 implants I came in for, Dr Epstein and his assistant convinced 2 people in their 80's to spend almost $30,000 to remove all of the upper teeth and put in a prosthesis. NEVER in all the discussions was it mentioned that in addition to the almost $30,000, I would have to have yearly maintenance at a cost of $400. Initially I thought I had found a reputable dental implant doctor. I was very wrong. My implant broke (!) after two years so I went back to Epstein and I quickly came to regret that decision. When he said "We're going take care of you" it never occurred to me that he was going to charge me another $2,740 and then make me wait six months. During the six months I waited for the crown I was never contacted once by Epstein's office. I called three times and was given a different excuse each time as to why they didn't have the crown (I suspect they were behind on paying the lab). Some of my husband's coworkers recommended Dr. Epstein so we took their advice, and went to Dr. Epstein for routine cleanings. Dr. Epstein immediately began up-selling us on his "preventative care"....he advised we needed treatment on teeth that looked like they were beginning to form cavities. We trust our medical providers, so we said we would do everything he so highly recommended. We scheduled these future appointments, and got an estimate of costs; approx. $8,000. We immediately asked if everything would be covered by insurance, we were told YES. We had a LOT of work done, received a bill and received a bill for approx. $7000. We were confused! We asked how this could possibly happen and we were told "some of it was covered, but we are not in your network". We ended up moving to the Sacramento region and our new dentist told us ALL of the seemingly necessary preventative care, as advised by Dr. Epstein, was bogus and he was just trying to make more money! read more

As a client of Dr. Epstien's for a number of years, I have not been able to chew on the left side of my mouth since 2014. I had to pay another dentist to fix his work (multiple fillings), and in addition, Dr. Epstein diagnosed me with 4 cavities on the right side of my mouth (which he didn't fill) that magically disappeared when I got x-rays from my new dentist a few months later. Not only is Dr. expensive, but he recently abandoned me and my girlfriend as patients when approached about these integrity issues surrounding the disappearing fillings and billing. We're now having to sue Dr. Epstien for over $5000 for damages he caused in the past 6 months. I will be filing a fraudulent diagnosis claim with the Dental Board of CA for the fillings. It's tragic, as we kept communication open with him and his office to try and resolve this without the courts. Please don't make the same mistake I did. There are better options out there. read more

I usually don't like leaving negative reviews, but I feel that I owe it to other patients. I will do my best to share only facts. I needed a tooth extraction and an implant and asked on a neighborhood site for suggestions. I called each recommended dentist for an estimate, and Dr. Epstein was the cheapest one. When I went in for a consultation, he said that I will need the extraction, the bone grating and a sinus lift. I was hesitant, after reading the complications that could occur with sinus lift. I decided to read about sinus lift and this time I also read many reviews about Dr. Epstein. Honestly, I didn't like what I saw, so I decided to get a second opinion to make sure that I indeed need everything that Dr. Epstein said I needed. This time I went to the most expensive doctor on the list of recommendations, but he had the best reviews. This doctor didn't know that he is giving me a second opinion. He also said that there was no way to save the tooth, but the only things he said I needed was a tooth extraction and an implant. I asked if I would need bone grating or a sinus lift and he said I don't need to move my sinus and most likely, unless he discovers something during the procedure that he can't see on the x-rays , I shouldn't need bone grating. After I looked at the treatment plans from both dental surgeons, I realized that the most expensive doctor's plan was half of Dr. Epstein's because he didn't pile up all the extra procedures. Needles to say that the second doctor did the surgery and the implant for me yesterday, and I didn't even feel when he took out the tooth (with local anesthesia - I didn't want the general anesthesia) and nothing hurt during the implant procedure either. He prescribed pain killers, but I didn't need them and didn't take them even once. If I didn't read other people's comments about how Dr. Epstein tends to pile up procedures one doesn't need, I would have all these things done unnecessarily, that is why I now feel obligated to share my experience. I tried Dr. Epstein and was initially impressed by the professionalism of his practice. Very flashy and high tech. When my friend had a bad experience with his work, I still hung in there and gave him the benefit of the doubt. However, similar to another review I read, it seemed that the top priority was making as much $$ as possible. I spent plenty. Now, I am spending more money (and even had to endure an oral surgery) to correct some of Dr. Epstein's work. An "open margin" on one of his crowns has caused a lot of problems for me. Mind you, this is work he checked over and over again after the fact and didn't see the problem. He also complained about the size of my mouth, which I found unprofessional. First of all, let me say that Dr. Epstein is a very competent dentist running a very professional practice. Based on that, I would tend to give him 5 stars. Unfortunately, his practice is extremely income-focused, and every visit seems like a hard sell for expensive teeth-cleaning, whitening, crowning, and other procedures. Even a simple tooth-cleaning is spread out over two sessions allowing greater billing. (I've never had that happen before!) What prompted me to stop seeing Dr. Epstein was an unsolicited phone call setting up an appointment for filling cavities. This surprised me, as I don't have any cavities. When I asked for clarification, I was told that Dr. Epstein felt that some of my existing fillings were due for replacement. (I'd never heard of that before, either.) So, if you can deal with the hard sell, and the creepy feeling that Dr. Epstein's bank account may take precedence over your health, then you'll probably enjoy Dr. Epstein. If you are looking for a one time cosmetic dentist, this Dr is skilled. If you are looking for a regular dentist, look somewhere else. I had been a patient of Dr. E for a number of years. He was kind, explained everything and the staff was responsible and upfront. Then a sort of shift happened. At a regular cleaning I was told I had a cavity. I came in a week later and was given laughing gas (without asking or being notified it would not be covered by my insurance- that cost me an extra $350) and he started grinding down a tooth without explaining why (I assumed it was the sharp spot I had been feeling.) When I got home and got the feeling back in my mouth, the sharp spot was still there and the tooth with the filling was completely smooth. The normal ridges that make up the shape of the tooth were filled in. THEN! I got a phone call from the office saying I left before I could make another appointment. "Another appointment?" I asked. Yes, for the 7 cavities I had. 7?! Why hadn't I been told by Dr. E that I had 7 cavities? Why did he just now see them while doing the filling and not a week ago during my cleaning? Infuriated, I told the receptionist I would get a second opinion. Thank goodness I did. I went to my current dentist in San Rafael. After x-rays and a thorough visual inspection I was told that I did not have any cavities and that my most recent filling was " a little much." I was so sad in the change that occurred at David Epstein's office. I had years of wonderful experiences and recommended many people to the office. I have to agree with most of the other reviews. Dr. Epstein seems more focused on profit then patients. Very disappointed. read more

Doc Eppers (as they call him, I prefer 'epstein') is for sure a nice guy and I think he definately does quality work. He also makes sure the patient feels comfortable. He is one of those guys you think you could enjoy a beer with, but who knows? I will say his office is kinda expensive and very income focused. If I could give a 100 star I would... My experience from making the first call I made that was returned within minutes from Teresa because I had a oral medical emergency that was a complicated case from a wisdom tooth. Not only was the call returned promptly but Teresa got me in that day...before my arrival Teresa told me what to take for pain that was equivalent to pain meds but OTC, because I'm super sensitive to medicine...it saved me! I met with Dr Epstein and was instantly reassured it was not complicated to him, which help ease my anxiety,,, I have a needle phobia and have passed out many times from needles and I'm claustrophobic.., I was very concerned how I would be able to get through with the surgery with all the above..,it's embarrassing to say the least but Dr Epstein and Teresa eased my fear and embarrassment...I instantly felt comfortable ...I did not want a IV so I was given laughing gas/and a anxiety pill.., I don't recall a thing,,,it was a cake walk and I didn't feel or remember a thing.,,it was easy, non painful and the recovery went smoothly... The staff was incredible from the time you open the door, they are professional and they make you feel at home with any fears or concerns you may have which is what most Doctors lack in bedside table manners and blows it off... btw: I had 3 kids natural so pain is not the issue, it's the needle phobia/claustrophobic/anxiety I get with needles...I can't say enough incredible things about Dr Epstein and his staff... Great DDS. I was referred to Dr. Epstein on a Sunday with not one but two infected, impacted, wisdom teeth. On a scale of 1-10, I was at an 8 of pain. My fault, thinking it would just go away. He took my call on that Sunday and had me scheduled for an extraction that next Tuesday AM. Prior to the extraction he got me all the prep and post meds and clear instructions I would need. His staff took care of all the insurance logistics on my behalf which is a huge relief considering that is the last thing I want to deal with whilst in tremendous pain. Morning of, I show up higher than a kite and am greeted with smiles and warm assistance. In and out of surgery in what seemed like a blink of the eye but that is not what is most impressive. What I am very thankful for seeing THIS oral surgeon is that one of my wisdom teeth was not only impacted but also buried into my jaw and nested in a coiled nerve. One flinch and I could lose feeling in my face/mouth. It needed to be carefully dissected out. Post-op, he called to check on me regularly and monitor the progress from same day and for the following days until my next check up. Meanwhile, his staff was also making sure I was healing up well and understood all the care/instructions to follow. While all this is happening, the healing, etc - his office management staff took care of my insurance claim. It shouldn't be but it is rare to have a doctor treat you with the human compassion balanced with talented professionalism as Dr. Epstein. He was a great referral to me and I gladly pay that referral forward as well. read more

This is the most heartless group of people I've ever encountered in the dental field, and I am a dental assistant. I was a new patient to Dr. Epstein, he had only seen me once for an emergency. I had an appointment scheduled for a cleaning, which yes I confirmed but my circumstances changed over the weekend due to a sick family member whom was on hospice, and he took a turn for the worst. I had been staying up all the hours of the night helping my mom care for my dying grandfather and my appointment slipped my mind. When The office Mgr called me I told her what was going on, how I was exhausted from taking care of my sick family member and she heartlessly told me that they would "have" charge me $95 'missed appointment fee' (which is higher than the average fee). I asked her to give me a break this time, that i would reschedule, she clearly didn't care about what I was going through. I would understand charging me if I was an existing patient and Had a history of missing appointments but I was a BRAND NEW PATIENT, and having worked in the dental field, and in my experience, we have always given new patients the courtesy of a warning for a first missed appointment. This was no way to establish care with a new patient, which I told the manager I told her that she if she charged me then they would be losing me and my husband as patients. And a few weeks later I receive a bill in the mail of 95$. She had an opportunity to be a decent human being, had she given me a break they would've gained two lifelong patients, whom by the way need a lot of dental work but, instead they decided 95$ was more important than the thousands they could have made off of me and my husband, and now I'm outraged. I never leave reviews like this but I am so livid about having to write a $95 check to these jerks... as a former dental assistant people ask me all the time for recommendations, I will never be recommending these people in fact I will go out of my way to tell them what an awful practice this is. This is very bad business move on their part. They say the average person tells up to 10 people When they've had a bad experience somewhere and I will not hesitate telling every single person how awful these people are. I ate a lot of candy as a kid (I still do, oops), except I was bad at brushing when I was younger and that resulted in many teeth being filled with metal. I recently went into David to see if he could swap out the metal for a less visible white composite and he was do half of my mouth in under a time frame of about two hours. I finally was able to find a dentist who made me feel comfortable and cared for! From the minute I walked into his cheerful and clean office to the warm welcome from his front desk staff to his gentle and kind dental assistant, I felt I would be in good hands. Usually, dentists are always trying to upsell more services than immediately needed. They were very thorough- from showing me what the charges are for that day's visit and what is covered by my insurance to going through my xrays very carefully and patiently. It was the end of the day, yet Dr. Epstein made me feel he was not rushing to finish the day and after everything recommended me to see other practitioners who might be able to give further diagnosis so we can all be on the same page. They were reassuring throughout my treatment, I am very impressed and cannot believe the negative reviews. read more

They were booked about 3 weeks out when it first called to schedule an appointment, but to my request, called me with a cancellation and had mescheduledfor a visit a few days later. the absolute worst experience i have ever had with a dentist. i went there nearly 2 years ago on a recommendation for an infection on the left side of my mouth. i ended up with 5 implants a cat running around the entire office. my mouth on the left side has been paralyzed or numb, and i have NEVER got any feeling back. he told me it was my fault because of something i did while under anesthesia. i would have assumed someone was watching over me for the hours i was under. he traumatized me so badly that until about 3 months ago i went back to my regular dentist, and now have a completely new set of issues. he has his own brand of beer, and that is what he should be focused on, not people with dental issues. i have never sued anyone my entire life. my daughter paid the bill. i feel badly for her. it was a lot. if i ever were to sue someone for pain and suffering it would be Dr. Epstein. read more

I love Dr. Epstein, I went to him for years and loved his work but hadn't been there recently because I didn't have insurance anymore. I broke my front tooth off at the gum (it was a crown) not only did he see me that day for an emergency he did a root canal the same day and fit it in around his schedule. As usual he is incredibly meticulous (totally what you want in a dentist) and did I say NO PAIN Woohoo because I get sweaty palms just thinking about the dentist. Dr. Epstein is the WORST dentist I have ever had in my 52 years. I had Dr. Epstein do a gold implant on one of my molars. When it got back from the lab, Dr. Epstein tried to fit it in my mouth, it was very high. It took Dr. Epstein about 45 minutes of grinding the top of the gold implant crown to get it to fit. 6 months later it fell out. It had a very large hole on top of the gold crown where Dr. Epstein was grinding. I went to another dentist about this. He said that Dr. Epstein made the abutment 5 mm too high. It cost me out of pocket $2,106.00, Dr. Epstein would not give me my money back. I have to take him to small claims if I want my money back. I have two amalgam (metal) fillings in two other molars. Dr. Epstein said that they were leaking mercury into my body and I will end up with cancer. Dr. Epstein suggested replacing them with a white non metallic material. I did not sleep that night, it scared me. Later that week I went onto the ADA website and found out there is nothing wrong with amalgam fillings. Dr. Epstein should not be practicing dentistry. I haven't been to see a dentist in a number of years and I wasn't looking forward to seeing how badly my teeth needed work. Dr. Epstein was super patient during my first visit and explained to me all of the procedures which needed to happen with my teeth and the options for treatment. He was very clear about how much time and money each procedure would require and helped me figure out the best treatment plan. He recently did a root canal and several fillings in one sitting with me and he was willing to explain what he was doing at each step. I was impressed. Dr. Epstein took me to an appeals court where the judge again ruled in my favor. I have been awarded almost $8,000 in damages. This was incredibly stressful, painful, and degrading as my personal medical records were improperly obtained and in the hands of people unathorized to have them. Dr. Epstein is not professional.
