So much better than Marin Health Medical Center, where they are very unfriendly starting from the lack of places to sit and wait for transportation outside to having to be practically interrogated to visit or get inside for your appointments. MHMC has become the worst, passive aggressive employees who love to whine and complain and take out their frustrations on patients, the Marin Specialty Surgery Center has non of that underlying tension. The employees here treated me with kindness, care and welcomed me . They were all caring, kind and appeared to like their work, completely the opposite of MHMC, and thank god!!! The staff was genuine , expressing a high work ethic and were warm, from the moment I walked in to the minute I left. THUS IS WHAT HEALTHCARE LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE!!! Thanks to every single employee, from the front office staff, to the nurses, the OR employees and my surgeon, they all kept me informed of what to expect, what was going on, and anomaly's going on, so refreshing to be considered and be welcomed into the conversation involving my healthcare!! Super impressed. At MHMC, employees acted like patients were a burden, not here. Where were you all ten years ago?!?! I'm thrilled to know there is an alternative to MHMC and their crappy employees with their equally crappy attitudes towards patients. Through the high quality of treatment I experienced here, my faith that there are still people in healthcare who express kindness,compassion, a high standard of work ethics. 100% recommendation!!! read more

The rules of the Marin Specialty Surgery Center are enough to make me seek care elsewhere. They are not connected to other medical networks' computer information. They require that the patient fill out a long, cumbersome questionnaire each time the patient is at the center. I filled out the questionnaire for my first procedure, but a month later they insisted that I fill it out by hand again, even though no information had changed. They would not accept a xerox, nor an attached list of medications and allergies. I know this is hard to believe, but they insisted that I fill out the questionnaire BY HAND all over again. They refused to look in my chart folder to see if the first questionnaire was in it. "It's protocol." This protocol is disrespectful of patients' time. They need to change "protocol" or lose this patient. read more

If you need out-patient surgery, this is the best place to have it! The nursing staff is so professional, thorough, caring, and fun. The front desk staff is incredible--polite, calm, helpful, and very tactful. The facility is spacious and quiet besides being pleasant, antiseptic, and welcoming. They keep your ride and family updated regards any changes in timing. The procedure rooms are state-of-art and the operating room is (from what I can remember) huge, extremely well lit, kitted out with top-of-the-line equipment, and staffed with super knowledgable and caring professionals. The anesthesiologist took time to walk me through everything. My surgeon, Dr. Naidu, is the best anyone could want! The recovery RNs are equally professional, caring, and diligent. Each one of us easily had 6' between a fellow patient in the waiting room. All of us wore masks. Proof of vaccination or recent Covid test mandated. All my questions answered before I asked them. Absolutely incredible nurses, hard working, efficient, as well as my excellent doctor, Dr. Ramana (Ramo) Naidu. I am so fortunate to have excellent care nearby & insurance coverage. Everything just seemed like total chaos from the incorrect billing, overcrowded waiting room, poor communication with family members, and the manic recovery room. Billing told us the procedure would cost $1400 out of pocket. I had to spend hours on the phone to first figure out who in billing to speak to about it (had to go through both California Orthopedics and Marin Specialty Surgery because neither could tell me who to go to) , and then get them to properly speak to our insurance company to realize this was fully covered! There were dozens of patients in waiting room without enough seats (which is awkward considering everyone there is on crutches), and my husband waited over an hour before being taken in. Poor communication when the surgery went over by 1.5 hours -- when I called to ask for an update 30 minutes after they had told me he should be done, I got an "I don't know" which is reassuring. They did eventually call back to say he went in late and the surgery was going to be another 30-45 minutes but didn't know why exactly (it ended up being another hour). Being 8 months pregnant, this just sent me into panic catastrophe mode until finally the doctor called to explain why it went overtime but my husband was fine. I understand the patient's health is priority and I do want them to focus on surgery, but family communication could definitely improve. The recovery room felt like a cattle pen - with zero privacy (curtains don't seem to be used very much here) and doctors and nurses running around in a manic state. Upon leaving, my husband was asked if I'd need crutches by the nurse. He said he didn't know because he couldn't feel his leg below the knee (this numbness would last 72 hours vs the "12-24 hours" they said it would last!) and so didn't know how bad the pain would be or whether the ankle would sustain his weight. She then asked "well, did you need them when you initially had the screws installed?" Well yes, he had a multiple fracture and dislocation which involved reconstructive surgery so was on crutches for months. Not sure why he is having to give his opinion on treatment? The nurse ends up giving him crutches, but at our post-op 2 weeks later, the surgeon tells my husband he shouldn't have been using crutches as he needed to put weight on the ankle for proper recovery. Again - where was that information in the post-op instructions?? read more

I had my ptosis surgery here with Dr Silkiss - Dr Stephen Licata was our Anathesiologist. This was the Best experience and Amazingly perfect day. Dr Stephen Licata & Dr Silkiss make the Perfect Dynamic Duo. You could not ask for more!!! I was awake the whole time, felt no pain, did not want to go under but Dr Silkiss needed to have a smooth surgery too....Dr Licata made 100 sure we were both Perfectly Happy for a Smoooooth Surgery where everybody was Happy!!!! read more

The facility is clean and spacious and well-appointed. The front desk people were cool and aloof, which was off-putting. But the nurses were friendly and helpful. The nurses ensured I stayed warm as I waited, which was much appreciated, and quite different from experiences with surgeries in other facilities. The surgeon did a very good job. I appreciate his skill. There were problems, however: When I awoke from the anesthesia, I had pain in my right side just below the ribs--a place that was nowhere near the surgery site. Did something happen there during surgery that caused bruising and pain? Was I dropped on my right side while I was under the anesthesia? If so, they should have informed me. The pain still persists, 16 days later. No one communicated to me why this happened. I have sought out communication with the Surgery Center about the issue, but they have not chosen to do so. I have had seven other surgeries under anesthesia over the years in other medical facilities, and nothing like this has ever happened before. Another problem: When I met with the anesthesiologist shortly before surgery, she told me I would be getting the anesthesia called propofol, and not general anesthesia. I approved of that, because I didn't want general anesthesia. Yet when I got the written report on the surgery, I found that I had been given general anesthesia. If they changed their mind about which anesthesia to use, why did they change their mind? I have received no information about this. More importantly, I didn't want general. They overrode my wishes. Another problem: Marin Specialty Surgery Center office refused to send me a report on the surgery via email. If they had, I would have known the full results of the surgery the next day. As it was, I didn't receive the report by snailmail for eight days. The business office told me they couldn't share the info by email because of privacy concerns--even though I gave them explicit permission to share the info with me. And even though other medical facilities I've dealt with, like Sutter and UCSF, have no such problems sharing info. My research shows that Marin Specialty Surgery Center violated the HIPAA Privacy Rule by NOT providing me with an email of my surgery results. Having to wait eight days for crucial surgery results rather than one day was unnecessary and insensitive. Another problem: The facility's communication about pain meds was less than ideal. I had previously been told that I could use Advil or Tylenol for post-op pain. Right after surgery, though, a nurse told me NOT to use Advil, as that could aggravate bleeding. read more

WOW. I am a nurse and I Know when care is worth a WOW. BEAUTIFUL spa-like facility. Extremely professional and skilled staff. All nurses and others were exceptional. They were authentic in personality, attentive, watchful for any potential sequelae. My anesthesiologist was also amazing; Very detailed in care planning and review of my chart. Perfectly tuned anesthesia. My physician as well is just a lovely person as well as perfectionistic which is what I want to have in a provider! Had a small surgery there and i just want people to know that its such a great place for an outpatient surgery center. From the moment you walk in - the front desk girls greet you an make you feel comfortable , specially me i was feeling scared and worried. Then of course the nurses, anesthesiologist and of course the doctor. Dr. Mark Bazalgette just wonderful. My whole experience was great. Surgery was succssful and im recovering well. Place its clean, everyone very professional. I have nothing but great things to say about this place and of course much cheaper surgery than having it at a Hospital. Surgical Center of America is a for profit company that is located everywhere if I am not mistaken. The AG should look into these more closely has egregious billing occurs. AMAZING staff all around from the doctors to the welcoming receptionist. The care I received was more than 5 stars! I am huge on her side manner as well as great health care and this place provided both! If I had a special request they did everything possible to meet my needs as long as it didnt interfere with my healthcare. All I can say is, that although the facility is indeed beautiful, the professionals that make up the Marin Specialty Surgery Center are even more so. A first rate experience starting with the receptionist, the initial nurse who got me ready for surgery, the surgical nurse and then the post-op nurse. Another great experience in medical care that usually one is not looking forward to. I was treated with compassion and everything was explained to me. I was helped getting up since my foot was goofed up with a nerve issue. For safety's sake I was asked to verify my name, address, date of birth and procedure and where on the body about 6 times during my changing stay They had state of the art equipment, the staff was happy, worked in unison and with precision and knowledge. Came here today for "minor surgery," and the experience from beginning to end was spectacular. The receptionist at the front was very welcoming and uber friendly. We plowed through the paperwork, and she had them prepare a bed for me inside so that I could wait in comfort. Once I was called inside, I was greeted by the nicest people. They were very accommodating, very friendly, and just very pleasant people to be around. They made the entire process very enjoyable, even given the circumstances. When I went into the surgery room, they were very accommodating to my needs. They maintained conversation and kept me comfortable as the multitude of needles poked into me. In the end, I was back on the hospital bed, sippin' on a Treetop Apple Juice, munchin' on some saltine crackers and graham crackers. Ohhhh how good those were! They did a thorough checkout for me, telling me everything I should expect from today's procedure... like, don't shower tonight, no hard activities for the next week, pain may return but don't be discouraged, etc etc... As I hobbled my way out of the Surgery Center, I felt a great sense of satisfaction. Yes, even though I wasn't skipping out of there, doing the riverdance or what not, I was happy with the service and the hope of recovery. Today, I had a wonderful experience, and it was thanks to the kind staff at this facility. EDIT: I've sent in a request to change the business information. First, the name is incorrect... it's incomplete, there's no such thing as a "Speciality," and the address is incorrect. MSSC provided my 20 year old son with stellar ambulatory surgical care. Receptionist (@630am) was professional and moved through the tedious paper work efficiently. She explained the details clearly, checking along the way to make sure my son understood and was engaged in the process. Well done. The admit, discharge and OR RN's and MEA's are rock star quality- high level of competency with patient centered warmth and attention. Shout out to Beth, Alison and Paula and the rest of the clinical team. Having surgery is frightening especially if it is your first experience. It is difficult to comprehend the concept of anesthesia. Well Dr. Bill Mayeda, the anesthesiologist, provided our son with the information in a manner that was easy to understand. He was available for questions. Dr. Keohane is a well seasoned, highly competent orthopedic surgeon, who does not rush to operate. He explains conditions and procedures appropriate for most consumers. Great staff, positive experience. The only place we would consider having ambulatory surgery. I've had five outpatient surgeries in my life, the most recent of them at Marin Specialty Surgery Center and it was hands-down the worst experience I've ever had. To be fair, some of the nurses were nice enough and seemed to care. Everything leading up to surgery was fine for the most part. They did blow a vein in one hand before successfully running the IV in the other. Whatever, it happens. And my surgery started two hours late. I can live with that too. What I couldn't live with was waking up on writhing pain (which has never happened to me), and there was absolutely nobody there to say "hey, the surgery went well." Once I woke up, I spent 15 minutes (I know this because I could see the clock in the nurse's station) trying to wave someone down, wondering why I was in SO much pain and if something had gone wrong. Nurses walked by no fewer than 25 times pretending not to see me. The anesthesia made my voice so hoarse that I couldn't speak above a whisper. When I finally got someone to pay attention, I asked how the surgery went and why I was in so much pain and she said "they seemed very optimistic." WTH does that mean?! That's something you say about a cancer diagnosis, not a surgery (found out later from my doc that it went great, minimal blood loss, easier than expected). Every time I've woken from previous surgeries, there has been a nurse at my bedside to remind me where I am, surgery is over, everything went great, ask if I'm comfortable, so o need anything, etc. Fast forward another 15 min of insane pain...they had to give me a shot of fentanyl to manage the post-op pain. I realize this is more the fault of the anesthesiologist, but the attitude with which it came was unnecessary. The nurse acted like I was just getting in her way. She seemed eager to get me out the door. I was so uncomfortable, I just wanted to lay there for another hour or so. Once I was finally heading out, I realized I was the only patient remaining in recovery (it was 5 pm) and she just really wanted to go home. If I have to have surgery again, I'll do everything I can to avoid this place. read more

The front staff people are very nice and professional but there is a huge lack of privacy. In the surgical waiting area everyone can hear everything about everyone's medical problems. When the nurses prepped me for my surgical procedure they did not even close the curtains all the way. This was a very embarrassing problem that I had. Not only that but I could hear them talking about my medical problem, where other patients could hear them. Five stars for the front end staff, my doctor, and the anesthesiologist. But the nurses need to be more discrete when it comes to patient privacy. I give them zero stars! read more

The medical staff is fine but beware the billing department: if for some reason they can't get a hold of you, (like moving like i did), they won't bother trying to phone or email, they will simply send the SMALL balance due to collections...Trying to untangel this once it happens is a maze of "it wasn't us" and "there is an agency that handles that for us"...Paid thousands and a $125 was sent to collections that i only found out about when checking my credit... Incompetent, unresponsive, harassing billing department! My wife had surgery on May 20. We received a letter from their billing service (in Irving Texas) dated June 17 stating that the claim was denied since the service occurred after her Blue Cross coverage was terminated. I called Blue Cross, who told me that she had had uninterrupted coverage (I know this since I pay the bills) AND that they had already sent the payment on June 11. I emailed the Texas billing service, whom I reminded that if they had just called Blue Cross they would find out themselves that the payment had been sent. I asked for an explanation, which I never received. Today (July 23) I received a call from the local (Marin Co) billing department. Nothing has changed. They are still saying she didn't have coverage. This is harassment. We love the surgery center but they need to FIRE their billing service in Texas, who should have sent me an apology but did nothing. read more
