This review is for the deli area. While it's true you have to pass through a cluster of flies to get to the deli, the food service area is actually quite clean, if faded and worn. A motherly woman in an apron told me about the 11.99 lunch special: you get a choice of noodles or fried rice with two items. I selected the fried rice with spicy green beans and mushrooms and tofu. The portions were large. She asked if I wanted to take my order to go or dine in. I opted to stay in one of the small booths. She said the special comes with choice of soup. I selected the hot and sour soup. While the soup was bland, I found my food good. I would have appreciated having some chili sauce available but there were not any condiments to go or on the booths. I was Asian market hopping and I stumbled across the Pig Bun at Maria Grocery. A local restaurant offered the exact item at high cost. If you don't want to pay the restaurant prices, then you can stop by here. I didn't personally find anything to buy here so service was irrelevant but the ambiance was quiet. I always shop at this store, but today it was the worst experience. I went to Daiso next door to shop really quick and my parents went to Marina to shop. When I went to Marina to find my parents, they immediately told me that someone approached my dad inside the restroom asking to check what is inside his Jacket. He was bothered by this because he mentioned that he was asked aggressively. He then asked what happened to the person, then immediately walk out of the bathroom, Scared. After he explained it to me, I called the attention of the associate and explained what happened. She then found that it was one of their guy employee. When, I asked for his reasoning why he did that he stated that he heard some sort of bag or plastic sound and thought that maybe my father who is in his late 70's is up to no good only because he was the only one there. My father explained to me that, he finished taking a number 2 and plushed the toilet that is the only reason why he used the restroom. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE BECAUSE OF THIS KIND OF TREATMENT. Back when the pandemic happened I watched a lot of mukbangs, I'm talking ramen on ramen on ramen! I seen soooo many buldak noodle videos, etc and I googled where I could find them in my area and DING DING DING it's down the street! I love how it's never crowded when I go. The only issue I have is whenever I go, they don't have the carbonara noodles stocked. I have to get really lucky to even purchase them. 0 star! AVOID THIS SUPERMARKET!!! I've had consistently poor experiences with this supermarket, particularly with the quality of their produce. On multiple occasions, I've encountered issues like apples that appeared fine on the outside but had moldy cores. It seems their fruits and vegetables are stored in freezers for too long, leading to spoilage that's hidden until you cut into them. Because of these recurring problems, I stopped shopping there years ago. Unfortunately, my in-law recently fell into the same trap. She purchased Chinese broccoli, only to find that 80% of it was unusable and had to be thrown into the compost bin. Similarly, a box of mangoes looked perfectly fine on the outside, but after waiting a few days for them to ripen, we discovered they were dark and purple inside--completely inedible. When I went to the store to request a refund, the manager was incredibly rude and informed me that produce must be returned within two days. It's clear this policy exists because they're fully aware their products aren't fresh. In contrast, other stores like Ranch 99 and 168 handle similar issues professionally, often offering apologies and resolutions without hesitation. One of the older bigger Asian markets in the area. Same model as a 99 Ranch. And since it is around the 20 or so year old mark, it is grimier than new models of Asian markets. But when I do come here, I'm not really lingering around, I'm in and out. I mostly come for Asian snacks like seaweed wrapped rice crackers or garlic corn nuts. Of course, I also restock my Asian pantry as needed, as I can almost find any of that here, whether Chinese, Japanese, Filipino or Vietnamese. It's a good resource to have. For meats, I'll mostly gravitate towards their seafood. Not a polished marketed look at all, but rather very old world. So you kinda have to know what you're getting into. I can usually find a nice find here and usually at a better price than 99 Ranch. Their produce department has really cheap prices. But in those cheap prices there are a lot of produce either in iffy shape or on it's last legs. So you really have to scan and pick through stuff. The good is if you pick the right stuff, it'll be prime and ready to eat as soon as you get home. Don't want a hard/pink tomato, easily solved here. But you have to be willing to use it within a few days, can't hang on to it for a week or so. I have a system for this place, so it works for me. So for a convenience stop because it is close to home, this place gets utilized fairly often. Ok I'll update review- variable produce quality & really old carts & cranky service remains problematic, But I'm really happy I can find obscure things I love at good prices here- Frozen fish tofu, & all kinds of stuff u can just throw into air fryer. passion fruit purée & jellies/boba/halo halo stuff for making drinks, and a HUGE selection of dumpling wrappers- coz we make hella dumplings. Also Yakult drinks ( not the knock off brands) , sour cherry juice, and various furikake. I've been a customer for a long time and I don't mind the lack of stocked items sometimes, or the old carts that I have to fight with to get it unstuck from the other carts. Since the pandemic, this place is not as busy as it used to be. I still want to support my local business. However, today I'm just very disappointed with the customer service at the counter. I know that some time before we were putting groceries in the bags ourselves due to safety. Now, I had to bag 30+ items on my own. I don't mind if it was like 5 items or something, but the cashier stood there doing nothing while I ended up bagging the items myself. I thought this must be a new policy, but I saw 3 other cashier bagging items for customers. The kicker is that the cashier ended up just walking away as I started to finish up my first bag. They should train their employees to treat all customers the same. Just beware that you might have to start doing all the work next time you shop. read more

I bought ground beef and cooked it the same day. I added to the whole pot and like the other customer, the meat stank and I had to throw away the whole pot. I will not return to this place. Do I buy anything that's already sitting out in the refrigerator section as far as meat.... no . But I do different select type of meats that's behind the counter and then they weigh it. I never had a problem. If you ever buy fish and the eyes are clear, you'll never have a problem. I never had a problem. I go to different stores to get different things. If I want ground beef, I'll go to Trader Joe's. If I wanted some good steaks, I would go to Costco. They are no different than any other store. I have to REALLY LOOK at everything because they do get moldy/wilted things in and it's just plain gross. To be honest, we walked in here and it was like trying to walk through a gauntlet of people. The layout from entrance to actual areas to shop is not convenient especially in the time of COVID. When you enter, you basically HAVE to walk through a sea of people checking out. I did not feel safe. BUT one thing that was going for this place is that although it felt super run down, the prices felt cheaper than 168 Market or 99 Ranch. Other than that, the market is in a little shopping area with a Sheng Kee Bakery, the former Mayflower dim sum place, Tapioca Express and Daiso. It has a large parking lot, so not difficult to find a spot. I would suggest NOT to go on a weekend as you'll find yourself in a COVID soup of people. But if you're looking for some asian product staples, this is a good market to drop by. Just don't expect you'll step into an H-Mart experience (of which if you've never stepped into an H-Mart, it's pretty clean in there and bright and open). read more

The worst possible experience one can have at the local Marina food grocery store. Bought a fish and had them fry it on Thursday evening. Noticed the person helping seemed not interested in his work, the fish scales were not properly removed. He fried it n gave it to us. We brought it home n sat down for dinner. However when we cut open the fish the inside had blood all over n fish was uncooked. I called the store n asked to speak to the manager who had gone home. Calling the next morning manager Ying Ying, she was almost angry as to why we called. She said bring the fish n receipt Of course we had thrown it out the night before. She never bothered to ask who had fried the fish, why the scales were not removed. No apology whatsoever. Never had such awful customer service. I live far closer to the Ranch 99 supermarket in Northern Fremont. However, they don't stock nearly as many of my staple Asian groceries so I typically end up driving to Marina. I still haven't learned to just make the extra mile or two drive first. As with any typical Asian market, their employees don't speak perfect English. But they're willing to try to understand and help find what you're looking for. While the customer service isn't necessarily first-rate, I'm thankful for the fact that at least it exists. It could be renovated, but what are you going to do? Also, if you do shop often, it's worthwhile to buy everything you need from here. Why? Because they give you coupon vouchers for their deli! Which means roasted duck for lunch or dinner one night. So good! read more

Solid asian market that has the Japanese pudding I've been looking everywhere for. The prices at this place are definitely on the higher side compared to Ranch 99 but they have a good selection of snacks that I did not see in other asian supermarkets. They also have a deli which is nice, it is our family tradition to go there on Sunday or Saturday morning for the rice roll and soy milk. I cannot comment on the produce of seafood here. read more

I usually come here once a month or so to stock on hard to find Asian ingredients (e.g. rare veggies that even Seafood City wouldn't have and noodles/sauces/seasonings hard to find in other markets) for low prices that are hard to beat. Otherwise, I try to avoid this place due to 1) very bad quality vegetables and fruits 2) hygiene of this place. The quality of the veggies/fruits are usually very bad, I am starting to suspect they take leftovers from other grocery stores. I don't see any bad quality in the Asian veggies, only in non-Asian veggies/fruits (E.g. I found mold quite a few times in my onions, bell peppers, grapes, tomatoes...) so I stopped buying veggies here unless they are those hard to find Asian specific veggies/fruits including galanga, Thai basil, Chinese broccoli, etc. To compare this even further, we volunteer at a few organizations where we hand out grocery items to those in need that have been donated by several grocery stores. The quality of the veggies/fruits from there are a lot better than Marina Food's quality. That is speaking volume that Marina Food is selling lower quality fruits/veggies than a food bank. I saw cherry tomatoes that were super moldy, all the packages had mold but they still kept them on the shelves. Bell peppers usually take weeks for them to start wilting when I buy them at other markets, but the ones here are super wilted/moldy already... which leads me to suspect Marina Food takes leftover foods from other places or they leave them sitting out forever. The place smells like any Asian market and its more cramped/run down than 99 Ranch. The prices are hard to beat though, that's the main reason why I keep coming out to this place. Don't expect ANY customer service, they vary. Most of the time they won't talk to you which is fine, just ring me up and move on... but I think I overheard a worker (might be the boss) telling the workers to move faster in Mandarin. Thought that was quite rude in front of customers. I may not look like I know Chinese but I do. I used to have problems with the male workers staring at me for wearing shorts or just plain staring at me... I still do get those stares but not as bad a before. I would turn my head and stare down the guys and they would look away quickly and ignore me. Sad how I have to tolerate such behavior still and call it progress. On the bright side, no lines. During COVID, this place didn't monitor traffic so I would come here as a last resort to avoid standing in lines. The customers do NOT social distance so it was always a risk coming here but I move quickly and dodge people. They also sell many different leafy green veggies. Also, towards the left back of the store they sell different meats. This market or grocery has so many things I need and close to where I live. It's a place on the way home and close to other stores or businesses that I need as well. I actually like going here than 99 Ranch! It may not be modern or the cleanest market but its not dirty either; just old and the prices are decent and not over priced. The staff just work but they are not rude. The old man behind the liquior and lotto counter is a sweet old man and can be funny. I can find everything I need of all asian ingredients. I get my utensils and pots here as the are decent prices. Once they ruin, it is cheaper to just buy another. I get my sake or alcohol here. I like also going here to get my fish cleaned and/or to deep fry when you need a quick dinner. The fish has no after taste to taste like the oil is old. They sell my sushi ingredients, my filipino ingredients and my chinese ingredients to make show mein or steam some shomai, etc. I love the desserts they sell. The vegetables seem organic and are decently priced compared to Safeway or Lucky prices. There are times the veggies can look old but most of the time, they look good and have all the asian veggies I need. Safeway's or Lucky's sell at double the price! Not sure the amount maybe $1 for every $10, don't quote me on that. This Marina Foods just really sucks. I don't even know how it's still in business. Service is terrible. I had called to see if they carried an item I needed for cooking and they hung up on me. I called a second time and she yelled I DON'T KNOW! I drove in to see if they actually had it...The smell when you walk in is terrible. It's a mix of old fish with I don't even know what else (shudders). The market is disorganized and dirty. There are a ton of empty shelves. Wow....Marina food has a travel agent, Tmobile, and a deli (with eating area). There's even an area for houseplants, such as money trees, bamboo, and orchids. You get deli coupons when you shop there. The supermarket has an impressive selection of SNACKS! One of my weaknesses is Asian snacks. Then she told the other customer who was not Asian standing behind the customer she was helping that she is closed but again helped out the other asian customer behind the customer she turned down. With the pandemic, it has been tough getting groceries in-store as I am trying to avoid large crowds and social distance. However, compared to a lot of other Asian stores such as 99 Ranch or Lion, Marina does a great job of ensuring there's ample space in each grocery aisle and stocking up their inventory. People are respectful at this grocery store and adhere to wearing masks as well as keeping 6 ft. apart. At 99 Ranch and Lion, a lot of folks would just walk by and not care or they would just tailgate you without leaving 6 ft. in between. My only complaint is their frozen sliced ribeye is not as marbleized as the ones I get at 99 Ranch, but I can live with that considering the environment and people are so much better. read more

This place is okay, I could question the freshness of a lot of their seafood on ice, unless I buy the seafood that were live in the tanks. This grocery store is mainly geared towards Chinese, although they do have couple items, ingredients, and snacks on the Korean, Filipino, and Thai side. They can have a couple deals on fruit but usually, they're average priced. The hot deli isn't that good though, the ladies working there are pretty pushy and are usually just standing around gossiping because of having no customers. Piggy-backing off the fact that there are no customers, I'm not exactly sure how long the food sits on the steam tables, so I would be careful about freshness. read more

THIS IS HOW THEY CHEAT YOU AT MARINA FOODS WHEN YOU BUY LIVE CRABS. They put the crab right off from the aquarium, water and all, inside a heavy brown paper bag and weigh it altogether. Out of curiosity, I decided to weigh the soaking paper bag and plastic when I got home. It weighed 0.202 lbs. That was 'snuck in' and bloated outright as added weight of the crab at $7.99 per lb. Amazing how they pull a fast one on their customers. Very, very dishonest practice. I would boycott Marina Foods. At least, at Ranch 99, they put the live crab in a clear plastic bag. Then, they cut a hole at the bottom corner of the bag to let the water drain out. Now, that is a more honest way of doing business...... and the place is cleaner.
