Marina Grill was exceptional. This spot is conveniently located near Wilmington's ILM airport. It offers both indoor and outdoor seating with a stunning view of the marina on the Cape Fear River. Wow! I was not expecting this place to be so nice. I had not been here before so I entered with an open mind and a hungry belly. The restaurant is very nice, both inside and outside. It looks like the view from most seat inside have a good water view if you choose not to sit outside. We were seated outside - very nice seating with a good view of the surrounding buildings and harbor. If you're going to sit outside I suggest you consider the angle of the sun and the degree of wind that is acceptable to you - it was rather breezy on the day we visited. We had one appetizer and two main dishes. Our starter was fried calamari and for the main courses we had jerk chicken and shrimp & scallops over risotto. The calamari was really the only disappointment of the meal. I've had calamari as an appetizer at so many restaurants. But unfortunately the calamari here was completely underwhelming- it was a very small portion to me. I would not order the calamari again - I just didn't feel that it was worth it at all. The main dishes on the other hand were both very good! The shrimp and scallop risotto was a definite winner -a five star dish! And the jerk chicken was very good as well. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the chicken was nice and moist. The pineapple on top of the chicken was delicious and the fresh green beans that came with the dish were cooked properly - cooked until tender but not over cooked. I was very happy with our lunch at Marina Grill. Firstly, parking is a pleasure. The hostess staff took excellent care of our party. We Sat outdoors and had a cool view of the marina with all of the yachts. Food was simple but very well prepared and plated. Ingredients were fresh and unique. Our server Eliza, was an absolute delight. I was hosting a couple that would be considered "Seniors" and Eliza had patience and compassion was sweet as chocolate chip cookie. Speaking of dessert, we shared the Bread Pudding with vanilla ice cream and it was the perfect finisher for a delicious meal. I always say Marina Grill is my go to downtown meeting place. read more

Driving around Wilmington, NC.... we decided to find a place for lunch by the water. Marina Grill came up on the list... we walked in and found a seat at the bar. The decor has the "ocean theme" with the big huge TV screen projecting an aquarium. Pretty inviting and comfortable. They have outdoor eating overlooking the Marina, as well, but it was a windy day and we chose to eat inside. We were greeted by Braden. What a nice young man. He took our drink orders, explained the specials and we ordered the French Dip sandwich with coleslaw & sweet potato fries on the side. It was one of the BEST French Dip sandwiches we've had in a long-long time. The tender sliced roast beef, gooey melted cheese on a bun that was soft, and easily handled the "dunk" and the Au jus had great flavor. Delicious !! Braden service was attentive but not overbearing. Was a first time visitor to Wilmington and I know I will be coming back at least w my family on a vacation. First afternoon/evening in town a group of us met at the Marina Grill and I very much enjoyed the experience. At first I was a little concerned about its slim/narrow 2 story space as I expected the acoustics to be horrible but they were actually just fine. The staff was just the right amount of "nice" (not over the top bubble gum happy) and attentive to our table. Small snafoo was the server of our food was not the person who took our order and they placed each of the 4 entries at the wrong seating position. I don't think if you actually tried could you get all of them wrong but our crew just laughed it off. You can't beat the setting overlooking the Marina, battleship, and a great view of the sunset. We walked from local hotels so I can't speak to parking and access as I typically do BUT it's a very easy and pleasant walk from several hotels. Our experience was the place drastically closed down at al.ost exactly 9:00 which was their closing time and by 9:20 we were literally that last patrons in the place. We sat on the patio, and although the chairs are plenty wide and comfortable, they are very low to the ground. More so than most restaurant chairs. Great spot on the water. I just arrived & had checked into my hotel. A quick 5-8min walk from my riverfront hotel. I sat at the bar to grab a quick bite to eat. Bartender Emily was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a refreshing painkiller - not on their cocktail list - but absolutely delicious on a hot summer day! With the heat & sunshine overwhelming hot, I opted to sit inside rather on their waterfront patio. They had blueprints of the battleship on the walls, and a huge LCD fish tank video too. Not overly crowded for a lunch, was easy to converse with others - without it being too loud. Great tunes on the speakers. Would highly recommend coming here for any meal. Horrible experience! Ordered appetizers which came out almost 40 minutes late AND COLD! I told the waitress who didn't seem that concerned, as if it's not her fault oh well kind of attitude. I also didn't appreciate the waitress saying "no way, it just came out the fryer"' as if I was lying about my food being cold. Our entrées finally came out, LUKE WARM and an entire hour and 15 minutes later. I get it, short staffed, cooks walking out, everyone is so overwhelmed. However, one cannot charge people full price for cold food and mediocre service. It's the audacity for me! The appetizers were taken off the final bill, but the damage was already done. This was my absolute first time out to the Marina Grill and I have to tell ya, my server Alan really set the pace for this place. He was extremely happy, knowledgeable, quick, and just down right cool as heck! He mad the recommendation for the shrimp tacos and I was a little hesitant because in all my years I have never had shrimp tacos but BOY was he right!! Their shrimp tacos are to die for!!!!! My initial impression was good - nice, clean restaurant at the marina. We attended a play at Thalian Hall and had a dinner reservation for 18 afterwards. We waited for drinks longer than we should have as well as our appetizers (she -crab should have been hotter), but the most frustrating part was how long I waited for my dinner. By the time mine came everyone I was with had just about finished eating theirs. Then when we ordered coffee it was served without cream and/or sugar and became cold by the time we were able to drink it. I would have been okay with it all had I received an apology or maybe a discount on my meal but no retribution whatsoever. Today DH and I went to the convention center for the weekend home show. Afterwards, we walked along the waterfront and ended up at Marina Grill. We have not eaten here before and in fact, didn't know about it until we saw it. There are so many restaurants in Wilmington to discover! We were able to get seats at the bar - and it's a huge bar! They had their brunch menu with a good variety of foods to choose from. I had the fish tacos, which was good but the fish was a little overcooked/on the mushy side, rather than a firmer texture, but I did enjoy them. I will say the price is a little high, as there was no side with the tacos. DH had the fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. He would have preferred them without the sugar and cinnamon. Too sweet for him. Sweet potatoes are sweet enough on its own. Overall a very good lunch. Service was fine. Oh, and the vodka sunrise drink was so tasty! Could/should have been 4.5 except for service - and 13/14 staff we have met have been excellent. We REALLY want to love this place. It's very close by and the location and facility is appealing, menu is varied, food is great. Most of the staff are attentive and friendly and seem to want to be there. Unfortunately the last two times we have sat at the bar (which we generally prefer) and our server - each time - AM B - has just made it not worthwhile. Unfriendly, unconcerned, inattentive, very cocky and self-centered (at one point tossing my bill and card across the bar at me while already walking away - no eye contact, no conversation). We will be back I'm sure - but we'll avoid the bar area and enjoy the table service from the wait staff that want to earn their tips by providing a welcoming atmosphere. read more

It went into length on website about no reservations but we were only told about the 90 minutes rule after being seated. We were not asked if we wanted dessert but given a bill- we then asked waitress for dessert which she took order but came back 10 minutes later saying that her manager said our time was up. Even tho we had 15 minutes and lots of time was wasted just receiving drinks & meals. Denied dessert - management was a mess. This rating is simply for constructive criticism as I know the service industry can be challenging. We elected to eat here on the weekend of July 2nd, 2023, based on the reviews and marketing photos. Very surprised when we were kept waiting for 45 plus minutes with absolutely no rolls, chips etc. Not to be expected from a restaurant with a rating and ambience such as this one. I made sure to ask if they offered complimentary items while guests wait and was told no sorry. When our food arrived ----WOW was this a surprise! What was served as a spicey chicken with grits and cabbage took me by surprise. The spicy chicken was actually equivalent to drive-through chicken strips but overdone and lacked good flavor. The grits were placed in a molded (small sized ramekin-shaped) in the center of a large plate and topped with barely noticeable cabbage hidden with a saucy topping then surrounded by the dry chicken strips. Very over-rated in the menu description. I could only eat maybe a quarter of the meal. Building up of expectations only to produce less than is not appealing. My husband's seafood combination was given to him at room temperature. This makes you question food-safety. Was the item improperly heated or left out for the entire time before serving? My daughters summer spinach salad was substituted with romaine lettuce and lacked both color and taste. She too did not eat half of the salad. Again, better to have spent eight- dollars for a drive through summer salad and not the ten-additional dollars. I could not help but to glance around at the other tables around us, wondering if this was a joke on us. When the waitress asked how everything was, I needed to be honest. To my surprise she informed the manager although we were simply going to leave without further comments. When the manager came to our table, he appeared annoyed and frankly stressed. This is not how we imagined our weekend meal Infront of the water in a nice setting to turn out. My meal was refunded, and I don't plan on returning to this location because it is a hit or miss. I can't imagine feeling like one is playing the lottery when dining in such an establishment. We ate at other Wilmington restaurants for less the ambiance and fluffed-up expectations and my goodness the quality was several times better, fresher and with better service. I was excited about this restaurant looking at it online and that it was near the Marina downtown but once we arrived there was a long wait time due to a concert they were having outside AND the restaurant was hosting a party upstairs. Clearly they were overwhelmed. Once inside (which had a lot of available tables) my family and I were disappointed because instead of the full menu they created a "concert menu" on paper...a mess.
