I didn't want to damage my car trying so she went ahead and called North Beach Recovery. Chase-the operator was extremely helpful. Took about 10 minutes to get to me. Once he did, he quoted me $375 plus a $20 credit card processing fee. He lowered my tire pressure, winched me back about two feet, and I was then able to reverse and drive back onto concrete. While he was quick and efficient--I winced at the price given. I was curious what the website said and it states //////We're unable to provide a price list, as each job is unique. Some customers are close to our headquarters, while others are much further afield. I've never been stuck and not been able to finagle my way out of it. It was a radiator hose that finally got me. I got two miles down on the beach before steam came gushing out from underneath the hood and I was dead in the water, no pun intended. The tide was coming in so I wanted to get out of there as quick as I could. So I put in the call. The guys were out there in about 45 minutes, had my car tied up and towed me off the beach to their place just north of what I will always call Winks. Chase and Jeff don't have a shop, but he looked under my hood and told me they could temporarily fix it by by-passing the heater core. I never asked about money. I knew how infamous the prices were for towing on the beach, but I didn't have any other option. The next day Jeff was out beside his refurbished ambulance cum garage, working on the car. He was going to McGyver the heck out of it- metal pipes in hand, trying to figure out how to get these different sized hoses connected. He told a joke a la Jeff Foxworthy and had a Budweiser can that was actually a promotional bit: the word WATER was emblazoned in blue upon the side. Over thirty years of fixing people as a paramedic and cars as a mechanic. I asked which one was harder and he said, "I treat them both the same: I try to do no harm." I went to our beach house for a couple of days with my family, (my brother in law has much better luck with radiator hoses) and was able to pick the car up on a rainy Sunday from his house on the beach. I gave him call, hopped in the car, drove back to beach house and sat down as I called him up to settle the bill. I'm glad I sat down because the whole fiasco cost me close to a thousand dollars, but there's no other choice really. And considering how stressful something like this can be- breaking down on the beach with the tide coming in and no shop for twenty five miles is nuts- Chase and Jeff made it feel as if it was just another day. Shit happens, as they say. That's probably worth a couple of hundred dollars alone.

We've made this stop almost annually for two decades. Some reviews indicate the place may have gone through management changes and certainly, the interior has been remodeled and better organized in recent years. The southern food in this store has been a legend in the past, but seems to have fallen out of favor as of late. Well, we've rolled with the changes and continue to look forward to this stop. It's the chicken that makes the stop for us. Made in small batches throughout the day, we've always found it hot, juicy, crispy and perfectly seasoned. We might add various sides or none at all; this review is more focused on the chicken. Today, we added wedge fries that were seasoned similarly to the chicken, hot and fresh. Nothing makes a visit to NC better than really good fried chicken. Border's is as good as it gets and you have the option of getting it so many different ways: individual pieces, dinners or family combinations. Today's staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. The cook came out from around the back and warned us that she just made this batch and it would be hot. She reminded us of my husband's mother, so she had our vote of confidence right away. The dining room had many seats to choose from; typical in and out seating with self-serve drinks. Looked to be tidy and more or less clean. We always use the restrooms and never have to wait. They were clean though dated. I'm fine with that. The convenience store has snacks goods and a whole lot of souvenir-type items. Not our thing but if that is what you want, the selection is sure to please. Don't forget to stop by the little produce stand located on the north side of the driveway. Mostly local, good pickings. Today the peaches were in and super sweet. Yum. If you want dining with ambience, Borders isn't your place. If you want really good chicken, fast and fresh, don't miss this stop.
