I found Mario my senior year at UCLA, and I really wish I knew about him earlier! He is the most talented hair dresser I know, he works super hard, and he's so sweet and fun. Although I moved from Westwood, I will still make the trip to come see him. He's that fairy godmother in movies that enhances your beauty & makes you feel amazing about yourself. The first time I came to him, I asked for bangs. He warned me that it would require maintenance and he took time to know what I really wanted. Well what can I say that hasn't already been said on this Yelp page? That I'm going to be hair flippennn all week because my birthday month! Is he amaze-balls? Yes. Let me tell you I've been having some rough last couple of days at work and Mario changed my attitude upon walking out there. This is so cheesy, but seriously! Weird right? *Cue the Monica voice from Friends* "I KNOW!" I kept my conversations short due to this and Mario said some wonderful things about how he lives life. Got me feeling happy all of a sudden. Furthermore, Mario will show you plenty of examples of what style you're going for before cutting your locks. This helped me because I'm so dumb when it comes to explaining what I want my hair to look like. Well, after having the same hair stylist and hair cut for the past 15 years I decided to change my look. Mario was meticulous and took his time, yet he knew how to handle my thick mane like a pro. I know my hair is difficult since I have thick follicles as well as a lot of it. I asked for a trendy lob, and what I got was a very pleasant surprise. He spent time washing, drying and styling my hair and was very friendly the whole time. I feel like one's inaugural yelp review shouldn't be a terrible one, and I am pleased to say that I get to write an AMAZING one for this salon. Patrick, the gem of a human who did my rainbow ombre this afternoon, was fabulous. The salon was small and cozy, and both Mario and Patrick were welcoming and gracious hosts. And hilarious. They both made me feel very comfortable, and while I will admit I do tend to err on the side of "everyone is my friend until they tell me otherwise" it is nice to see people receptive to that kind of nonsense from a perfect stranger. It was a long afternoon, but it felt like hanging out with friends, and that's important when you're in a small space smelling hair color fumes for three hours. As for the actual hair. I have never, in my LIFE, seen the same stylist more than twice. If Patrick ever moves far away, I'm going to go with him. Like the cut and the blow out is great. It's fantastic. He did an amazing job, easily the best haircut I've ever gotten, the best blow out I've ever had. The best color job I've ever had. It is so much fun. I can't stop staring at it, I'm about to wind up like Narcissus. Don't get me wrong, every now and again you buy that self help/beauty/food/whatever groupon that turns out to be the worst mistake of your life. And maybe I'm a little less faint of heart than most to walk into a salon with my groupon and say "hi does someone want to give me rainbow hair?" on a Thursday afternoon. Sure it could have been bad. It could have been soooo bad. Instead it was a really fun way to spend an afternoon, the groupon was a good deal, and the add-on price for the extra rainbow magic was INCREDIBLY reasonable, I felt pretty damn guilty!!! I would have tipped my entire paycheck if I could have. But my landlord would have been so pissed. This salon is great, Patrick was amazing and he turned my hair into practically every single sailor scout at once. Look at the pictures. Go see them for a fantastic haircut/color/conversation. Tip well and tip often. PS. There should be a cons list. There is always room for improvement. 1. I never did find out if coffee causes cancer or if it is actually beneficial as long as you have 20 cups a day or less. Suggestion: PhDs in science. 2. It is clearly a problem that neither of them were around when I was 5 and my mom let that horrible woman at Fantastic Sam's give me a mullet before her wedding. Suggestion: Time travel. To the year 1985. For real. 3. Getting haircuts shouldn't be fun, they should be traumatic, all girls are taught this. Suggestion: Nothing don't change a thing, today was awesome. The End. read more

This review is super late, and I'd be lying if part of the reason I've been putting off the review had nothing to due with me wanting to keep Mario to myself. Let's be honest, it's a tragedy when our beloved go-to establishment - whether it be a restaurant, nail salon, or hair stylist - is no longer accessible. That being said, it's even *more* of a tragedy when our beloved go-to establishment relocates because of our flawed and misguided attempt of trying to keep it in business. These are the following reasons I'm going back to Mario: - Mario will not push any products on you, but will happily answer any product questions you have. Personally, I loved that, and it made me want to go to him to get all my styling tools and products. And I absolutely will any time I want to purchase one. - I didn't cry after my haircut. No, you don't understand. It took me hours to find Mario because I wanted to make sure that I could go to a stylist who had given multiple haircuts with long layers without sending the customer to a review site to seek vengeance. It's harder than it sounds. I'm talking about the haircut, not the search. - Not only did my mom not cry after my haircut, she didn't even notice it. That's a bigger deal than me not crying. - Free parking. Park in the Trader Joe's lot directly across the street. Validation is provided once you enter the salon building. IMPORTANT: Wait for the light to turn green before you remove the parking ticket, otherwise the validation will not register. - Mario's music playlist is on point. This is just a bonus. - The amount he charges you is the amount he quotes when you ask. $85. Mario runs his business with integrity. I was impressed with the five-star reviews on Yelp and so booked an appt online. Here's the thing: In the short-term, Mario is super talented at classic feminine cuts and combining your interests with his expertise. He is a gem inside and out, a caring and passionate human who I always look forward to seeing. The vibe at his studio is hip but super relaxed. I left today feeling super confident and fem, it was the first time I felt like my hair was showing off my personality. I wish I could get my hair cut more often with him but I don't need to because it stays looking so good. In the long-term, I have never loved my hair more. I have wavy hair and used to use a curling iron on it daily to tame the unruliness. In the past year, since going to Mario, I have used it maybe 3 times. I feel like my hair is growing back tamer and healthier with each cut and I am loving my natural texture that is being shaped by the strong cuts.
