Mario's haircuts take 10 years off my age. Everyone complements me. He has been cutting my hair and coloring it for more than 20 years. He is an artist. I have NEVER had a bad or eh cut. The same goes for my 3 sons who are in their 20s and my husband. They all love him and have used no one else for over 15 years. He's easy going, down to earth, gets it without the need for pics. Been going to Mario since I lived in the city back in 2002. Even after I moved out to Long Island, I still make the trip in to see him every few months for the best haircut around. Alex is amazing as well, with hair washing and personal service. I feel like family whenever I go there and this is a chic unpretentious salon in Chelsea with an owner that has styled for fashion magazines like Vogue on a regular basis. After an impressive consultation with Mario, I went ahead and booked an appointment for a cut & color. I have to say it's probably one of the best experiences I've had with my hair. Mario clearly has a lot of experience (his salon has been in operation for 20 years) and he is very dedicated to his craft. He took the time in the consultation to thoroughly explain the process he had planned for my hair. During the appointment he was sweet, attentive, and professional. I visited Mario Nico recently. Mario is an artist of hair. Mario took a hair mess and created a great style. He took the time and care, at times I felt that he was cutting hair by hair to get it right. He also advises on how to maintain the style for future. For me, I would go to Mario every time but it was rather costly. I understand that hair costs to maintain but I am not used to the price charged. I do want to emphasize that Mario is magnificent and I would visit Mario Nico every 5 or 6 weeks if I had a money tree but I cannot seem to locate one. read more

The Mario Nico salon is a fantastic find in Chelsea. Old school individualism and true boutique setting sets this place far apart from most small scale salons in the city. The vibe is low key and relaxed, but the work and quality of product are excellent. Colorist Nile Butta is a new addition to the staff there and is the city's best colorist! Mario Nico the owner is a gem and his cuts are true form and function plus- beautiful. The entire staff are welcoming and I find the place full of charm and character. Nile Butta has been my hair colorist for at least 25 years. She recently moved to Mario Nico Salon and now you can find her too! She's a skilled chemist and fantastic on advice about color relative to skin tones. She's also attentive to ingredients that are gentle on the scalp. My favorite haircuts have been the ones i got form Mario @Mario Nico. Mario is really talented and also very nice. The place is cute, but i wish they had more comfortable chairs. It's also expensive. I think it's around $130 for a cut with Mario, less for the others in the salon though. But If i made more money, i'd get my haircut here all the time. read more

I went in with frizzy, curly hair in bad need of a cut and came out looking like a different person, with a beautiful sleek cut. I got my hair cut by Mario, who has been running this salon for many years. He gave me some wonderful, straightforward tips for keeping my hair the way I want it to look. The cut looked great right away and they spent a long time styling my hair afterwards. This place is the real deal-- as I entered, a model who was there for NY Fashion Week walked out with a photographer. The decor is really nice with a chandelier and large fancy mirrors. I went to Mario Nico Salon over 10 years ago and had one of the best haircuts I've ever had. Unfortunately, when I went back recently, Alvie, is no longer working there. However, I took a chance on Alex and I'm extremely happy with my cut. When I arrived for my scheduled appointment, Alex told me he didn't think I was ready for a haircut, based on the style i was looking to achieve. However, Alex offered to clean the existing cut up a bit until I was ready to come back in a couple of weeks. He didn't charge me for the clean up. Forward three weeks...Alex took time to consult with me and offered suggestions which were correct, given my facial features. I must admit, when he was cutting my hair I was a bit worried that it wasn't going to turn out like I was hoping. However, when it was done...the cut was amazing and versatile. I've gotten many compliments and the hair falls in place. Alex has a great demeanor. He is warm, friendly, consultative and genuine. The rest of the staff was also friendly and professional. If you can afford the cut, I highly recommend the Mario Nico Salon. You get what you pay for. Needless to say, I will be coming back! My only criticism is that they could have more books/magazines that feature men's haircuts! read more

I relocated in 2012 to Boston, MA to attend law school and still come here to get my highlights and haircuts ongoing. London my stylist always knows what my needs are. She is one of the best in the industry and always provides me exceptional service. I am always extremely happy and satisfied every time I come here. Everyone that works here truly cares about the customers. I always have great service from my entry at the door. On my last visit the place was busy but what was so special is that they still took the time to give me personalized and attentive service. I still felt that I was the only customer here on a hectic day, stressed from school and given the fact that they had several other customers as well. I highly recommend this salon. Colorist didn't deliver on hair color. My hair color wasn't what I asked for or discussed in detail with him, and he didn't seem to care, or offer a discount or recolor. My advice is not to get your hair colored in this salon. I had my color fixed at another salon. read more

Even though I made my apponitment on a weekday in the middle of the day, he still was to busy and distracted with other customer to focus in my hair.
