I was asking around for some recommendations in the Dayton area and heard about Marion's Piazza. My brother told me that only locals like this pizza, so as a certified pizza lover, I knew I had to try it. It's sort of like a tavern style with thin crust, minimal sauce, and toppings all the way to the edge. It's cut party style into rectangles/squares. This location was huge! The decor was old-school and the prices were as well - beer was super cheap! You order pizza at one counter and all your drinks at the next counter. They will call out your pizza order number over the speaker when it's ready. We got a large size supreme pizza to share and a couple drinks from their cooler. The pizza came out and I was intrigued. The sausage was definitely a strange texture... it looked like worms and didn't have a strong flavor, but overall I did like this pizza. It's similar to others of this style that I've had before, but I guess it's not for everyone. I don't think I'd need to get it again, but I'm glad we tried it! read more

Well, Marion's has a reputation interesting enough to give it a try. My wife and I were alone and looking for a place to eat so we gave it a try. Pizza is clearly mid. It is a thin crust and I really wanted to like the pizza but it just didn't do anything for me. Restaurant is dated but functional. They are geared to handle big groups so, that is good if you have a group. We also got their Philly Cheesesteak sub and again...just mid. It was a big sandwich for only $9.00 BUT it was like a cheesesteak patty, not broken up like a normal cheesesteak. You had to order your food at one area and then pay for your drinks at another. Girl at the counter was relatively helpful when we ordered but when I needed to ask for silverware the two I asked just somewhat grunted at me that they were "over there" and I had to ask someone else. So, a lot of staff just not engaged staff. So, I can say I tried Marion's but I will most likely not try it again unless someone else is paying and has a strong argument why I should try it again. read more

Stand ON line (yep, I'm a pesky New Yorker...) and appreciate the semi "well-oiled machine" which is the ordering process here. Unless you're a regular and know exactly what you want, you'd better get a menu, because once it's your turn, you've got a split millisecond to place your order and move aside for the next hungry patron. Service is good/efficient, and you take a step back to wait for your pizza, or attempt to find a table in the HUGE dining area that's AWASH in a SEA of people who seem to appreciate this place a lot more than I did... Go wait on a second line to get your drink and then HOPE you hear you number called for your order. I did NOT hear my number, even though I was standing practically in front of the counter... NOT directly in front, as the harried, overworked cashier (manager?) who begged us not to stand in the most obvious (only available) waiting area. My 9" cheese pizza and "deluxe" dinner salad (no extra veggies that I could see under the MOUND of cheeeese) were "fine," but truly nothing "special." Yep, I'm a NY pizza snob, but I'm willing to try almost anything once, and while the TON of people working here get an A for effort, the HUGE crowd STUFFED into the large, airless dining hall, so-so food and assembly line production are not something I see myself rushing back to experience again. Wow. Talk about a blast from the past! I'm going to guess that this restaurant looks pretty much identical to what it looked like when it originally opened, inside and out. Signage, layout, vast dining room with like forty 4-seat tables, and brick arches galore. Kinda felt like going up to the snack bar at a bowling alley to order. Of course this can be bad or good as a throwback kind of vibe. One of those, I know exactly what I'm getting every time vibes. That said, the Dayton Style pizza is pretty on point. Thin, crispy, square cut, bite sized pieces. Another thing that looks dated is the style of sausage they use. It looks like it was extruded through a spaghetti machine. Not necessarily good or bad, just different, but honestly kinda weird. Came around 2:00PM on a Saturday. I think it's a bit goofy that they don't have free refills but it wasn't a dealbreaker. They had a section reserved for a birthday party so it was a little crowded in the arcade but the ambiance was nice and kid friendly. Whole place gives retro vibes. I stopped in for lunch today with some coworkers and the pizza and atmosphere was great. I opted for a 9" (small) pizza with pepperoni and black olives and it so delicious I ate the whole thing. The staff was all very friendly and helpful. I would definitely come back. read more

Drove 30 mins to pickup and when I got home, this is what I had. Customer service is terrible when I called back. They told me to call their main office for a refund. Haven't lived in Ohio for over 40 years but every time I go back a Marion's deluxe is on the menu. My sister was up the weekend of July 1st so I had her bring back several half baked pizzas. My complaint isn't about the pizzas but about the attitude of the hateful manager. There were several half baked pizzas sitting out waiting to be picked up, she went over to see if they were what she ordered and the manager was an absolute jerk and started yelling at her that they weren't hers and to leave them alone. The unique thing about Marion's is the sausage. Ever had a Totino's Party pizza? The sausage on those things is a finely crumbled, almost hamburger-like texture. My husband and I walked over to the drink counter first and told the guy working that counter, we wanted to place an order. His response was so rude and arrogant with him telling us we order food "over there" and drinks with him. He went to turn around expecting us to go to the food counter first. We need food and drink. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now! And yesterday, it finally happened! When I was living in St. Louis, I became addicted to St. Louis style super thin crust pizza. I was told, this would be the place to come and find something similar. I gave them a call and placed an order about an hour in advance. Two 13 inch pizzas. One with pepperoni and mushrooms and the other with pepperoni, sausage and bacon. My order was ready when I arrived and everything was just as we asked. Let me tell you, they really load the pizza with toppings! The triple meat pizza was definitely my favorite! I could eat that all day every day! The sausage had great flavor! It had a spice that seemed a little different than what I normally expect, but it was wonderful! Just a heads up that they cut the pizzas with super tiny Square and rectangle slices. I personally think this is perfect considering I have kids who don't really need a very big piece. Also, it made me feel less guilty as I went back for more and more! LOL. The only "problem" was that the sausage on the three meat pizza very easily crumbled and fell off as we picked it up. After a day full of running errands, the wife and I decided to grab some carryout pizza. Long on our radar, we finally decided to try one of Dayton's "signature" food items, the Marion's Deluxe ($18) from Marion's Piazza. First off, this wasn't a misspelling. It was spelled "p-i-a-z-z-a", which was pretty accurate since it wasn't really "pizza". Our pizza consisted of a saltine cracker like crust topped with a generic tomato sauce, scant amount of mozzarella, and a generous amount of ground Italian sausage, pepperoni, canned (not fresh) mushrooms, and canned (not fresh) diced green peppers. The Italian sausage was bland and lacked any notes of Italian herbs and spices. Curiously, the pizza was also cut into bite-size squares not wedges. Frankly, for the price and for a pizza not out of the grocery freezer section, it was probably the saddest pie I've had in a very, very long. What was most telling was that we had lots of uneaten pizza but neither the wife nor I felt the need to save the leftovers. Not all was bad, though. Our pizza was hot and ready when I picked it up and service was fast and friendly. Unfortunately, the most important aspect of a pizza restaurant, the pizza, was lackluster and not a good value. Just a disgusting pizza joint. Everyone around town raves about how good it is, but I DO NOT see the hype. It's disgusting inside. No matter what language you say it in, there is no place in the world that makes pizza like Marion's. I've read the reviews and the guy from Nevada has no taste. Anyone who would complain about Marion's obviously has never traveled the world, because in any country you go to, none can stack up to Marion's. I have been a fan of Marion's since I can first recall enjoying it over 40 years ago. I do not recall ever being disappointed. There have been subtle taste differences through the years, likely caused when vendors have had to be changed for various ingredients, but the quality has been consistent. Today, my wife and I stopped in for lunch. The restaurant was clean and our order was taken promptly. Our salads and drinks were handed to us by the time we cashed out. Our pizzas were cooked to perfection by the time we finished our salads. I am unsure what more we could have asked for to make this trip better. read more

The poor untrained cashier was pleasant but mis- charged for an overpriced can of soda and we got some to go - and we're charge as a bottle of root beer. Not what we got. 100% recommend trying the meat pizza!! They absolutely load it up with toppings and I loved the thin crust that they cut into small pieces. We went with a group on a Saturday evening and they were very busy. Had to wait over 30 minutes for the pizza, but it was worth it! They make you get beer and other drinks in a separate line which you may stand in for another 5-10 minutes so that is a bit inconvenient. The building is large and it reminded me of how pizza places in major cities operate. Things are very fast pace and it is a noisy environment. This might have been the worst food I've had in a while. We ordered pasta, garlic bread and a salad. The garlic bread was soaked in oil and there was so little garlic. You would think that pasta would be easy to make right, no it was undercooked and the meatballs were terrible. I called to order a pizza a half hour before closing and was told it would be 15 minutes. I showed up there 15 minutes later; the pizza was cold as can be. when I called to complain the first time, the manager told me that he personally pulled it out of the oven, which may be true; if so, at least an hour earlier. I called back a second time to complain that while he may have pulled it out of the oven it was cold. When I called the second time, he explained that they don't pre-make pizzas. now while that may be true, and that he pulled the pizza out of the oven and they don't make premade pizza; the pizza I got was cold as room temperature when I picked it up almost exactly 15 minutes after I ordered it. Unless the oven was not on, or the pizza spent little to no time in an oven cooking, mine was cooked much earlier and had cooled. The ratings on Marion's blows my mind. People in Dayton just don't appreciate what they have. Marion's is amazing pizza, so amazing that every time I'm in the area visiting my family it's a requirement to go get a large Super Cheese at Marion's. I've ate at Marion's my whole life. It's the place to have birthday parties, graduation parties, family lunches and dinners. With that being said you may think this is just based on nostalgia, but it isn't. I consider myself to be a pizza snob. I love it, I could eat it every day if I wasn't afraid of my heart stopping. Marion's is in my top ten pizza list of the best pizza ever. Outside of the pizza, they have a great beer selection in their take out fridges and even have a small assortment of beer on tap. They also now have Warped Wing on tap which is cool. They have a backroom with Arcade games that is convenient when you have younger kids in your family, or that are yours. After they finish eating you just hand them some quarters and point them in the direction of the major distraction. The cons of Marion's is that they are notoriously cheap, in the way that they make you ask for plates and napkins. You have to pay for refills. The pizza is on the pricey side. They just now started taking cards instead of just cash. Yes, it's frustrating but it's worth it for the pizza. Try the Super Cheese, it will change your life. read more
