This was the first time at Mario's! My husband and I decided to have an early drink before our company Christmas dinner. To our surprise we were treated by the owner who found us a seat at the bar along with giving us a full tour of this magnificent restaurant that aims to please. From start to finish they have thought of EVERYTHING. Our Christmas party was in a special room that was located in the same building but away from regular customers. We were served buffet style and it did not disappoint! The Caesar salad lettuce crisp, flavorful and topped with the most divine house made croutons. I thoroughly enjoyed a sampling of the chicken Marsala penne vodka and shrimp scampi. If you looking for a true Italian experience this is your place. Also, so perfect for large events. We got there around 7:20 on a Friday night and were asked if we minded sitting on the bar side. No problem. Got seated immediately. Then it took about 15 minutes for our waiter to take our order. I had to ask for the cocktail menu. It took another 10 minutes for him to circle back for my drink order. On the plus side, I got the drink in about 5 minutes. We ordered a Sicilian style pizza so expected it would take a little time. It was hot and tasty on the outer edges. Unfortunately the center pieces were a little doughy. The pizza could have used 3-4 minutes more in the oven. A couple of big negatives: The cocktails have inconsistent pricing. The tv ad running constantly said $8. The table tent said $10. They charged $10. The other negative was a 3% supplemental fee charged on the order total. When I asked the waiter about it, he said there's a sign on the door. (I looked on my way out. There is a 8x11 typed sign about the supp fee.) While I enjoyed most of the pizza, the pricing shenanigans will probably keep me away. read more

Long time Mario's patron here. They've changed the pizza crust! I feel it's my civic duty to let people know so they can decide if they're ok with that. It's now more like a flatbread. I thought it was just a mistake the first couple of times but now I assume this is permanent. The dough has a nice flavor but the texture of the whole pie is all wrong. I work many months in Italy every year and eat a lot of pizza, and Mario's was always my favorite here in MatthewsI hope they change it back to the Neopolitan style they used to make. I've had other food there and at the adjacent John's Place and it's always been really good. Cocktails at John's are fantastic! The staff is always excellent. read more

First time coming here and was pleasantly surprised! It kind of reminded me of a mom and pop Italian joint in Jersey. If we are back in the area, we would certainly come here to eat. Great service, the food came out quick, and the portions were very generous! The garlic knots were delicious - I could have eaten the whole basket. I also enjoyed my pasta order, and the half size was way more than enough! My kids enjoyed their meals (again large portion) and my husband had Stromboli to take home too. Food quality, meatballs and tomato sauce have been declining for years. The New TV commercial on Prime is painful to watch. Nothing like the Mario's that started in Matthews Township Shopping Center, "Next door to the Old Theatre." Meatballs used in the sandwiches have changed, they now taste like Giant Spaghetti O's meatballs. Was not impressed at all by the food. We got blackened mahi, lasagna, and fettuccine Alfredo. Lasagna was the special and was just ok, 4/10. The mahi was about the same and the mashed potatoes were pasty. The fettuccine Alfredo was not cheesy at all. We also got fried pickles and toasted raviolis. Both of those were decent. Def would NOT recommend. Our bill for 2 mixed drinks, 2 sodas, 2 apps, and 4 meals was $175. Left feeling regretful that we didn't go somewhere else. read more

We did more talking than eating, but we were definitely eating between the laughs & talking. I ordered the half portion of eggplant parmesan. I still had PLENTY of leftovers, as seen in the picture. I was already told by our fabulous server that the restaurant had a garden & grew a lot of the food it served. You could tell by the taste. Everything was fresh. My friend ordered garlic knots for our table. They were delicious, semi flaky w/fresh garlic & marinara. You could tell that it wasn't the canned stuff. I can't remember our server's name, but she was great. She told us about the specials, gave drink recommendations, & checked on us periodically w/out being overbearing. We sat out on the patio. Some of the best takeout Italian we could ask for! The packaging and delivery service was clumsy because the sauce from the Seafood Fra Diavlo was everywhere inside the bag (minus one star!), but otherwise fantastic. We love coming into town and ordering from Mario's, it's the family's local fav and definitely ours, too. It's a good thing we don't live closer!! Maybe one day we will venture to dine at the restaurant, however cozy Italian with a good movie hits the spot :) Generous portions, quality ingredients, strong flavors - we've tried many of their dishes but these two take the cake! This is our first visit to Mario's, the service was great and the food we have mixed feelings about. We started with the burschetta, we loved that they make the mozzarella in house but we wished there was more tomatoes, balsamic and the bread was toasted but it did have great flavor. My husband ordered the chicken parm, the sauce could use more flavor, the chicken was over cooked and the cheese was slightly burnt and coagulated sat under the lamp too long. I had the shrimp scampi and it was on point with a slight bite. I loved it. We will be back to give it another go. read more
