Happily I found exactly what I was looking for: Exquisite Local Tomatoes bursting with flavors that will never be found in most American markets. Oddly, in every corner of the world, they have wonderful fruit, but in the USA, you gotta know someone. That person is Mario. In addition, Mario knows meat, and I had to get two of the tenderest fillets I've ever had: Butter! Last but not least: house-smoked trout fillets. Only at Mario's! I love Mario's - the meats, the fish, the produce - I even love Mario and his family who seem to hang out there. The ONLY place on the mountain to get fish (unless you catch it yourself). I especially liked the trout, but it is all good. The meats have already been extensively reviewed elsewhere, but don't forget to look in the freezer. There were several cuts of elk meat which were so flavorful - didn't taste frozen at all. The other draw is the produce. Yes, don't bother going to the farmer's market - seriously - Mario's is better. There isn't a big selection, but it is good. The peaches were so fresh and sweet. The spring lettuce mix tasted like it had just been picked. And of course, the service is great. This is a family run business at its best. read more

I don't know where to start. Let me first tell you this is by far some of the best meat my family, friends and I have ever had! I have to admit, I was skeptical as can be driving by Mario's for the past few days. The place looks like a shack from the street but trust me, once inside Mario will great you with a smile and take the time to talk to you about everything he has on his shelves. I was there for over 45 minutes and couldn't help but appreciate a man that loves his trade as much as Mario does. On this trip today I got 2 filets which Mario cut fresh from a whole Tenderloin, 3 ribeyes which Mario suggested I have cut 1.25" thick instead of the 1.5" thick I was thinking, some fresh bacon which is made in house, some prosciutto, some fresh green chili breakfast sausage that won Mario an award, some king crab legs and some free range chicken eggs. The meat was seriously some of the best, if not the very best, that we have ever purchased from a meat market. I give major props because Mario also recognized the last of the King Crab that he had was the end of his batch and he gave me a great deal for what he had left. The taste was so fresh and the meat so succulent that we only wish we had had more. Several customers came in while I was compiling my order and they all told me that Mario's Market was the only place to get meat on the mountain and I have to agree with every one of them. Lastly, if you are looking for grass fed and grass finished beef this is the spot to go. Mario has a huge freezer chest with a ton of options from ground beef, steaks, roasts, pork, you name it. no doubt the food is great and about the only place to buy good fish. I love supporting our local businesses. However, the last time I went in there the woman behind the counter was so rude it was upsetting It's not the first time I've been in there and felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. We love Mario and this little market. I only get my meats from here when we are in town! We did some filets and rib eyes and chicken and everything was amazing! Also love that he roasts his hatch chilies on site and vac packs them for you to take home based on the heat of the chilies. Also love that he has some local produce and eggs. We buy from Mario every trip to Ruidoso. The steaks are fork tender and full of flavor. He cuts them while you wait, and well worth the price. On Tuesday afternoons, he gets fresh local trout and it's the best we've ever tasted. He also cooks stew and sells out, so it's best to reserve your portion in advance. Wow, is this a great asset for Ruidoso. Mario brings in exceptional fish, and that's a huge deal here. We bought Copper River salmon to make at home, and it was the best I've found - including that in Dallas, etc. He has a beautiful selection of meats, as well, and works to provide as much locally sourced products as possible. Went to Marios just before memorial day bought 2 Ribeye steaks 37.00 + dollars were the worst stakes I have every had third to call several times did t work out today stopped by and told him about it he told me that I was the only one that every complained and refused to do anything about it I useally don't rite up people but when I spend almost 40.00 and can't eat it and third to fix the problem where here it is one thing for sure I made my last trip! read more

Mario's has excellent meats and local fresh fruit and vegetables. The only problem is that there is no way of knowing when he is open. We went on a Friday and loved the food so much we went back Saturday. We then tried on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, disappointed that he was not open any of those days. There is no sign on the door, no info on the website and no message on the phone. In other words, totally unreliable but great if you can catch him open. read more
