A Hardware Store on Steroids!…read more Our first visit to Hatchet Hardware of Troy was for some plumbing parts. When we first walked in, my thoughts were, 'they're not going to have plumbing parts...' I was totally wrong. This hardware store has it all - everything you expect in a local hardware store and then some. The entry to the store is filled with unique items for your home, trinkets, and gifts. It's a visual delight. Then you get into the heart of the store and there you'll find housewares and small appliances, landscape supplies, light bulbs...the list goes on. They even offer refills of cleaning supplies for environmentally conscious shoppers. Don't forget about upstairs which houses the plumbing supplies amongst other things. Still in the 4" pots, these babies had sent out peppers all over the place! I am now home and kinda regretting not buying one... But I did buy 16 tomato plants... all for 1$ a piece and I just finished planting then out in my garden. They are beautiful and I think I might just make a special trip back up to this place .... I…read morehad tried several other companies, - including my long-time maintenance company, who are regional distributors for my equipment - with poor results. Mark came quickly, knew the product line (although he was not specifically family with my equipment) and was experienced and knowledgeable enough to be able to quickly diagnose and fix my problems, based on what he knew about other equipment from the same manufacturer. He was quick - because of his diagnostic skills and his knowledge of how to repair - and affordable, and his repairs have held up over time. He is old-school, someone who cares about his customers and his job and takes the trouble to do it well. I called him because of a problem (that eventually self-repaired) and he called back the same day, even though he was on vacation in another state, to give me what help and support he could over the phone, and to arrange to come and fix things as soon as he got back. That's the kind of work that gives me confidence and peace of mind. I recommend him most highly.

There were two employees in the store including one that I walked past while he was doing something at the front door. No "Hello" or "Can we help you find something." I wandered down the central aisle looking both ways at every side aisle until I found what I wanted. I took it to the counter and both guys were counting money. Again, no "hello" or "did you find what you were looking for." I don't think they actually said anything to me the whole time. Small hardware stores need excellent customer service to compete with big box stores and the internet. This one experience was disappointing.

And, the employees are typically very friendly, very helpful, and very patient. Well, there is an exception to every rule and I found it at Phillips Hardware. I'd just moved to Delmar and had previously only gone to Lowes frequently as it is more convenient to my house. But, I went to Phillips wanting (and hoping for) good customer service and the ability to ask questions. I didn't get it. I needed some chain cut and some eye hooks for a ceiling rack I was hanging in my kitchen. The woman at the front counter was quite pleasant and called someone to help me -- perhaps the owner. A sullen uncommunicative man appeared and directed me to follow him. He seemed severely irritated to have to serve me and I was as polite as possible, treating him as if he was the customer. After cutting the chain, refusing to make eye contact he thrust the pieces at me. I asked where I might find eye hooks and, acting inconvenienced, he pointed to where they were; when I saw a small selection I asked if there might be others elsewhere and he snapped that that what was there was all that there were to be had. Clearly he doesn't like either serving customers or being asked questions. I immediately decided then I would refrain from further purchases at Phillips and after cashing out drove around Delmar to Glenmont to go to Lowes. There I actually did find very helpful sales personnel, and walked out with many purchases. What a severe disappointment Phillips proved to be; I actually prefer supporting independent businesses and will pay more for items in order to do so. I won't, however, put up with rudeness and bad customer service, which is why I will never return to Phillips. Btw, I found a wide array of eye hooks in Lowes, and they were among my purchases. I should have simply started there.

My fiancé and I were in Hudson this past weekend and made a beeline for Rogerson's Hardware. We had…read morebeen there six years earlier, before I got back into woodworking, so I couldn't fully appreciate this unique experience fully at that time. About 45 minutes to an hour were spent browsing through the incredible old/new - new/old stock (however it's referred to) and we had the pleasure of talking with Dennis, who answered whatever questions I had while gently rebuffing my attempts to buy things that were not for sale. I did however purchase a nice old file in new condition as well as an old, ornate drill bit holder which will proudly be displayed in my home shop. This store has a hazy, relaxed, out-of-time feel to it and is as relaxing and comfortable as any familiar place where one wants to get lost for a while and forget the loud, impersonal modern world in which we find ourselves immersed far too often.
