Surprisely, each giant calm costs only $3, plus a $3 cooking fee. I selected a table where I can get a lof of direct sun on my back, which in turn can boost my vitamin D3 level, and asked for a sashimi dish.

The original location was where the modern fish taco was born supposedly. It all started when Mesoamericans nixtamalized maize, which became flatbreads. Eventually it led to corn tortillas, which were used to hold various fillings like seafood. The Spanish Colonial period introduced new ingredients and cooking techniques. Japanese fishermen in Baja California during the early 20th century helped popularize tempura-style frying. Seafood vendors brought batter fish to the mercado in the 50s/60s, which became a hit. Then a San Diego State University student opened the first Rubio's a couple decades later, and now fish tacos are enjoyed by everyone today. I didn't spend much time here because I had to make it back onto the cruise ship. But as someone who appreciates food and history, it was nice to walk around. The original mercado shuttered in 1967 and the vendors relocated to the waterfront, and eventually moved into the building you see now. Lots of stalls selling all different types of seafood. There's also restaurants nearby where you can order ceviche, cocteles, oysters, and other regional specialties. They've ordered everything from sushi to fried shrimp or smoked fish from the case or creamed herring, so much to choose from. You just order from the counter, pay, get your number, get a seat and wait for your number to be called to go pick up your food. No waiters. The view from the upstairs deck is beautiful.

I had to go do a wellness check, as I just love me a Scallop Sandwich. Pulling into the parking area, everything still seemed in place, hard to find parking, regardless of how busy or not busy Point Loma Seafoods is. After parking, we walked into a relatively short line, and my brain immediately went to "Oh No, maybe it is true". We were called to order rather quickly, and I ordered my Scallop sandwich, my wife ordered the fish sandwich based on the employee recommendation, we also ordered onion rings based on his recommendation, and a bowl of clam chowder, just because, well we both really miss the clam chowder from Fish House Vera Cruz (RIP). While waiting for our order, we browsed the large glass case fronts full of freshly caught seafoods, live tanks of lobsters and crabs, and a full selection of in house smoked fish. While there was seating outside, we decided to grab a seat inside, next to a window. The general ambiance of this place is quiet, quick, seafood warehouse, sitting right by the water, it's just an overall beautiful place to eat at. There is no air of elitist here, people are not dressed up with reservations, with fancy waiters and table service, no, this is like a giant workplace cafeteria feeling, just overall a very relaxed atmosphere. We didn't have to wait long for our food, maybe 15 minutes. Let me give you a food-by-food rundown for what we ordered. New England Clam Chowder | 8oz Cup $6.03 -I would pass on this next time, while the texture was great, the taste was disappointing to me, quite fishy tasting. Scallop Sandwich | Lightly Breaded Eastern Dry Pack Scallops, Market Price, I think MP was around $17.99 -Amazing, just as good as the last one, the lightly breaded scallops were melt in your mouth delicious, left me longing for my next venture here. Fish Sandwich | Lightly Breaded Alaskan Cod $14.99 -Great sandwich, flaky, tender, again the breading was on point, zero fishy taste, I will stick with my Scallop sandwich but would not be mad eating another of these! Onion Rings | $6.03 - Ok so go to a seafood place, loaded with all sorts of fresh fish and order onion rings? I cannot be happier for this recommendation by the gentleman/fish monger taking our order, these onion rings are SO good. I would go here for the onion rings alone! *All sandwiches are served on fresh sourdough bread, with Mrs. Kelly's tartar sauce. The bread has such a nice bite to it and accompanies both the scallops and fish so well. Mrs. Kelly's tartar sauce, spread on the bread gave that nice crisp, balance and is the perfect, and only condiment needed. Glad that we came in, as this place is just, so good still, and that makes me, and my mouth, happy!
