The first time I tried Point Loma Seafood was in 2019 and I honestly dream about the Whole Belly Clam Po Boy. It is dressed a bit differently than 2019, but still really delicious. It's not on their permanent menu, but was happy to see it on their specials board. The amount of whole belly clams packed into the sandwich, makes it worth the cost. However, $6 for onions rings is steep. They homemake their ranch dressing which has a delectable taste of dill making it taste more fresh. I do wish they also had more sturdy paper plate ware, as it almost flew a few times picking up the sandwich to take a bite. Time and time again when I'm back in the San Diego area, I'll stop by Point Loma Seafood. Parking is a bit challenging, so you may get lucky or have a park in one of the nearby neighborhoods and walk. You also can't beat the location of being near the water. Give it a try! read more

We thought we would get something to eat before dropping off a relative at the airport. Point Loma Seafoods is located close to the airport to make it a good spot to do that. It has been over five years since we have eaten there. The last time we felt the experience was mediocre. Unfortunately, they have not improved. They have a great location and an upstairs balcony that overlooks the marina and downtown San Diego. The employees are friendly and our service time was acceptable. Between 3-6pm they have a Happy Hour on draft beers and some different food items. We had two Fish Sandwiches, some Onion Rings and two draft Beers. Thank goodness for the beers, because the rest of our food was barely edible. The Fish Sandwiches were two pieces of Sourdough bread, a small dollop of something like mayo or tartar sauce and two fried pieces of fish. We had to open them up to see if there was anything on them other than the fish because at first we could not see or taste anything. To eat them we put catsup and hot sauce on them. I have never not finished Onion Rings in my life, but this was a first. They were so over cooked and tasteless. Blah! If it wasn't for the cold draft beers this would be a one-star review. We will not be going back and it is a shame because of the great location. read more

Update to review from 5 years ago. Came in and joined the queue and Anthony took our order, he was pleasant and polite and thanked us for our order as he gave us our pickup number. Today's visit was no different as they were super busy, full tilt at 2 pm no less!! We decided to eat inside the dining area and had a nice view of the harbor. Within 5 minutes our orders were up and we dove right in! Hubs had the fish plate and I had the halibut plate. Both came with sides of coleslaw and skinny fries. The halibut was very good and hubs said his fish was delicious. The fries were good and plentiful. The coleslaw was very good, not too much mayonnaise and not sweet or sour either. It had celery in it which I liked. Plain but good! Perfect!! We will be back! read more

We LOVED Point Loma Seafoods. The place is family run and has been serving seafood since 1955. You can buy fresh seafood to take home to prepare or purchase plates and sandwiches. The large selection seafood is super fresh. A crowd of people were waiting for their food when we arrived. You order and pay at the counter and wait for your order. Indoor seating that overlooks the harbor is available. Most people opt to sit at table outside at tables that also have great views of the boat docks. The menu offers daily and happy hour specials. A large chalk board lists sandwiches, sushi, grilled and fried plate options and a few soups/appetizers. Bottles of wine and beer are available for purchase. I thought the meal prices were very reasonable. We ordered a Combo Plate, Fried Oyster plate and tuna sushi to share. This was a LOT of food but we wanted to share and try different fish. The fried oysters are juicy, flavorful and best fried oysters that I've ever had. The tuna sushi was delicious with the largest chucks of fresh tuna I've ever seen in a sushi roll. The fried cod in the Combo Plate was unexpectedly delicious with a light breading. I don't think I've ever had cod that was this fresh. The fried shrimp was good. The crab cake was a bit disappointing with little flavor and mushy. The generous portion of hand cut fries are fresh and delicious. The coleslaw was fresh and colorful, but didn't have much of a slaw flavor. The slaw was more of a salad, than a slaw. Overall, the food tastes excellent, is fresh and portions are generous. I see the negative comments and they aren't necessarily wrong. It is expensive, it could be better, the parking lot is bad. But for us out of towners, on the way to the airport stopping off for as one of our friends put it... "one last plate of fish", we enjoyed our pitstop here and seafood lunch with a harbor view. Something we weren't going to get again any time soon in the desert. Fish and chips weren't my favorite since I had 10/10 ones at Pelly's in Carlsbad. Chowder wasn't particularly memorable. Clam strips were enjoyable. The sourdough and dungenous was nostalgic. Again, nothing was amazing but just enjoying our final seafood lunch with the view made everything taste better. Point Loma Seafood is one of San Diego's BEST. The seafood is always fresh and tastes incredible. It's a little pricey but well worth it. I get all my fresh seafood, shrimp, crab and lobster here. They also have amazing Smoked Albacore. I usually time my visits around lunch time so I can order lunch. I love their fish & chips, fried clams, clam sandwich and the raw oysters. I love the view from the dining room. You have a great view of the fishing boats coming in and going out. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. If you sit outside watch out for the Seagulls. They like the food too and will try to help themselves. The staff is very knowledgable and helpful. Parking can be an issue during busy times. I have been coming here for years, albeit I don't frequent often, and read reviews on the quality of the food going downhill, prices being extremely high, and portions being downsized. I had to go do a wellness check, as I just love me a Scallop Sandwich. After parking, we walked into a relatively short line, and my brain immediately went to "Oh No, maybe it is true". We were called to order rather quickly, and I ordered my Scallop sandwich, my wife ordered the fish sandwich based on the employee recommendation, we also ordered onion rings based on his recommendation, and a bowl of clam chowder, just because, well we both really miss the clam chowder from Fish House Vera Cruz (RIP). While waiting for our order, we browsed the large glass case fronts full of freshly caught seafoods, live tanks of lobsters and crabs, and a full selection of in house smoked fish. While there was seating outside, we decided to grab a seat inside, next to a window. The general ambiance of this place is quiet, quick, seafood warehouse, sitting right by the water, it's just an overall beautiful place to eat at. There is no air of elitist here, people are not dressed up with reservations, with fancy waiters and table service, no, this is like a giant workplace cafeteria feeling, just overall a very relaxed atmosphere. A little cold and the bread could have been toasted up at least because it was flimsy and sad. The shrimp cocktail's heaping of cocktail sauce was a bit comical and the clam chowder rather bland and missing any real clams. Quality of fish and choice at fish market is extensive however we did not particularly think must of the popular cod sandwich. Look for the parking attendant walking around who will help you find a parking spot. We only had to wait about 4 minutes. There's outside tables and tables upstairs on a balcony. We chose the balcony so we could look out over the harbor. We did see a Sea Lion swimming along while eating which was fun. It was relatively clean, very noisy, and it smells like fish there. What we ate: I ordered a fried seafood sampler platter with crab cakes, shrimp, and deep fried fish fillets. It was a bad choice. The fish tasted dry and old, it was greasy, and there was a lot of oil. My son got fish and chips and it tasted like mine, greasy, oily and not great. The fries were pretty awful (hard and tasted like they were re-fried to heat them up) My brother got the ahi salad which was just okay. The salad wasn't anything special, he said the fish tasted decent. My Mom got the clam chowder soup. It wasn't very flavorful and pretty watery. Overall- we were not impressed with the food at all. So in trying Point Loma Seafood and rating it, I'm doing so against my own expectations for the experience and the food. The ordering process is casual, but efficient. The fish mongers behind the counter move rapidly to seek out the next customer in line and serve them. They're knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. You get an order number and then wait for your food. I chose their "Fish Plate", which is basically fish & chips with coleslaw. My monger talked me into adding the Red Fish Stew. And I added a beer, Moosehead Brown Ale, from their tap. My order took about 10-12 minutes to fulfill and then I headed to the outdoor patio to dine. The food: My Fish Plate was good, not great. The size of the fish filets were huge - think thick and meaty, not long and thin - but they were very lightly breaded and not seasoned well enough. They were a bit tasteless, needing to be dipped in their homemade tartar sauce for flavor. The fries were good, fairly crisp, hot , and plenty of them. The coleslaw was just average, nothing remarkable. So overall, this establishment scored a Three-Star with me. It's been awhile since I've been here but everything still tastes fresh and delicious . We ordered the Dungeness crab sandwich, the spicy yellowtail sandwich, fish and chips, the combo plate ( 2 fish, 1 crab cake, 2 shrimps) and the shrimp plate. Everything was delicious as I remembered. Only thing i would say is that they could have added more crab in the Dungeness crab sandwich since it was $26. Although you can taste the sweet crab meat flavor, not sure I'd get that again cuz it's not worth the price. My favorite was the spicy yellowtail sandwich. Second time here but it's been 7 yrs since our first visit. Wife was craving for some fish/chips and clam chowder. Ordered the following: Combo Plate (2 pcs cod, 2 pcs shrimp and 1 crab cake) plus fries and coleslaw - I know the plate comes with tartar and cocktail sauce but it doesn't mean you don't need to season the butter/breading anymore. Don't expect too much crab meat on the crab cake. Coleslaw doesn't have taste at all. Where's the seasoning Chef? I saw a lot of seasonings for sale though that should had been use in the kitchen. 3/5 Clam chowder - $7.42 (bowl) that lacks seasoning and mostly potatoes. Upon entry you see the display counters of fresh fish, lots of fish, shellfish, lobster tank, sushi, beer on tap and shelves of wine. The restaurant menu on the wall behind the counter offers, seafood that you can purchase there or what's listed. Have been here numerous times, especially when it's super crowded at Mitch's a few feet away, Point Loma seafood is my other choice. My favorites here are the sushi, where the japanese sushi chef is present making fresh sushi. The clam chowder and Manhattan seafood soups are also very good, except for the fact they serve it in paper bowls and plastic spoons really diminishes my full enjoyment :( The fried fish n chips are not as good, lacks seasoning, smaller portions and served in paper trays that you must pick up your order yourself, as there is no table service. The staff behind the counter are always nice and helpful but that's the extent of service you get. The cleaning staff do not keep the dining areas clean and neat. And on a few times, I asked if they can wipe the tables and pick up the debris from the service counters and floors, the female staffer acted like she didn't understand English, so I said it in Spanish and she still refused to clean..she should be fired! The dining areas upstairs offers incredible marina views but are always dirty and messy, which can turn off any diner from enjoying a meal. There's outdoor patio seating with umbrellas right outside the restaurant and has some marina views, but beware of the aggressive seagulls ready to swoop and grab your food! If the cleaning staff can be more aggressive like the seagulls and diligent about maintaining clean dining areas, perhaps it's a start to improvement. read more

It feels like this is becoming a bit of a trend with us but, this was not the place we set out to dine at. The other place - situated a short walk away - says online that they're dog-friendly, but when we arrived, the sign out front said "service dogs only." So, we pivoted. Point Loma Seafoods has a large and clean patio, as well as an upstairs balcony dining space. The market/order space is clean, open and bright, and they're heavily staffed. There were people ordering food from the restaurant and those placing orders for fresh seafood to go. The ordering process seemed a bit loose - as in, nobody knew who was in line, which meant nobody knew who was next, so there was a lot of "have you..." and "did you want to go next" and "thank you so much" going on before I made my way to the counter. We both ordered the Seafood Combo plate - two pieces of cod, two pieces of shrimp, one crab cake, french fries and coleslaw ($18.56) plus a fountain drink each ($2.55). They do a good job of keeping the orders moving quickly, despite how incredibly busy they were. My husband went in to grab the tray of food once our number was called and said that it took a second for him to see where he needed to go for the food, but otherwise it was fine. The combo tray was the right call for that day. The fish and shrimp were battered and deep fried - can't go wrong there - and the cod was flaky and moist. The fries weren't my favorite, but they weren't the star of the show. I think the crab cake was my favorite. It was dense but flaky, and paired perfectly with their cocktail and tartar sauces. I even enjoyed the small serving of coleslaw. My husband liked everything about his plate, as well, which was a bonus.
