I cannot say enough wonderful things about Doctor Alwan. He is truly a phenomenal OBGYN, and I have been his patient for over 25 years. He also cared for my mother, and during her battle with cancer, his expertise and compassion helped save--and meaningfully prolong--her life. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of physician he is. He is gentle, kind, and deeply understanding. In many medical settings, you feel the need to constantly advocate for yourself, but with him, that burden disappears. He is already your advocate and your partner in care, always listening, explaining, and ensuring you feel supported and respected. The office itself is beautifully decorated and creates a calm, welcoming environment. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful, making every visit smooth and reassuring. I also want to give a special mention to Rachel, my ultrasound tech on several occasions--she is absolutely wonderful, warm, and professional. Prior to making my appointment I called ahead and confirmed they accepted my insurance. Coming into the appointment I gave them my insurance where they told me that they are only partially in network with my insurance and they're going to bill out of network making my copayment way higher than it should have been. The office staff was very rude when I asked them to explain why they verified my insurance the day before if this is the case. I then told the staff I didn't want to be seen then if it would be out of network. She told me " okay bye ". I just feel like she could've been kinder understanding it was an emergency made appointment. It was just a waste of my time to go to this appointment with my insurance being verified only to be turned away. Side note but the office decor looked very dated and gross to be completely honest. Office experience for the most part was pleasant, front desk receptionist was always super helpful and sweet. Staff was nice. Only thing I didnt like was occasional wait times to be seen were ridiculously long- like an hour and a half wait time although I had an appointment and showed up on time. Also last issue was just that the doctor was supposed to get me a referral to a dermatologist and that was never sent in for a request and both ever came of it. And lastly. I did request info on something and doctor said he would find out about it right then and that the nurse would let me know but then nothing was ever brought up about that and nurse rushed me out and made a new appointment for me but never gave me the answer or mentioned anything of it like the doctor had forgot to even bring it up? read more

I am appalled and shocked at this. I sure hope you're joking Nancy. I only spoke with Alex your office manager who apologized for all these things, nonetheless people should know. For you to say I am posting incorrect information is ridiculous, I could pull my charts and show all of my accurate information! These things did happen and the hcg test was requested by me and my husband not by the doctor. I have not once received a call or voicemail from you Nancy. You are the one providing incorrect information at the cost of other patients well being now. This is absolutely ridiculous. I will be reporting you and Dr.Alwan's office now. I came here years ago and was told after a few months of trying different things that I would need my uterus removed at 20 yrs old because the pcos diagnosis I had was too severe. Left and found a naturopath and have been able to have 2 babies. Out of convenience I have come back 9 years later for early pregnancy appointments with our 3rd and was told I was having a miscarriage and was heavily suggested to do a d&c after 2 ultrasounds showed no heartbeat. We had to ask repeatedly for hcg blood tests and were met with attitude, hcg showed baby is still growing and we are just early in pregnancy. It is a shame that we even had to ask for a "definitive answer" as NP Park stated. That should be an immediate course of action before suggesting that a miscarriage and d&c are next options. There's so much more that could've been done prior to that suggestion. We will be leaving permanently this time. Please be sure to seek second opinions with their diagnosis. They also tried to charge us ridiculous amounts for ob care without hospital fees when under their obgyn contract. They're scamming hardcore because we paid nearly as much for both doctor and hospital prior pregnancies under the same insurance. Be careful. read more

As a woman with severe PCOS and a barrage of other medical reproductive problems(Fibroids, Menohrragia, enlarged uterus etc) , finding support has been extremely difficult. After years of suffering, I was extremely depressed and in debilitating pain every day. I had spent the last ten years advocating for a hysterectomy, only to be refused due to antiquated ideologies regarding women who don't want children. Dr. Alwan listened to me, supported me while I cried my eyes out and begged for help in which his response was "not if, but when we do this surgery you will find relief" and he was so right. He has since completed a hysterectomy and an oophorectomy successfully for me. He changed my life. I used to love this office. Not so much now. Dr. Alwan is awesome but the office staff not so much now. And you hardly get to see Dr. Alwan anyway. It's mostly his NPs that you see and they don't know anything about you or take the time to read your chart like Dr. Alwan does. Idk if the office staff have gotten lazy or if the staff is new. Every thing is just not organized anymore and takes forever to get done. And the new young girl at the desk is rude. ***MUST READ IF YOU HAVE a Primary or Secondary Insurance ** I hate to be the one to leave this review because Mark Alwan and his Clinical staff are GREAT! However his Office Manager Alex and Nancy from Administration are not so great. I have claims that were submitted in a late manner to my secondary insurances causing them to deny. That is the offices responsibility to follow up with claims. I have two PPO insurances and 3rd being straight Medi Cal and they were still billing me my co pays because my primaries werent processing them in enough time. STANDARD 30-45 business days for claims to be processed and 7-14 business days for the insurance to respond with correspondence. Of course they are not gonna have an answer or claim processed by the time I have my monthly follow up. Besides the point YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BILL A MEDI CAL PATIENT. YOU CAN GET AUDITED AS A PROVIDER AND GET FINED. I have had enough patience since February working with them and Nancy still has yet to give me a call. Avoid the drama, The only person from the business side that assisted me was RAYLENE she is the absolute best with communication. PS. I work in this field so I am aware of the background. Ultimately it is humiliating for MARK ALWAN because he is a Specialist and great at what he does. I would definitely not recommend Dr. Alwan.   He performed urtethral sling surgery and perineum tightening over a year ago and my life has been a nightmare ever since.  I had immediate complications after surgery.  I experienced extreme pain in my vaginal area when the nurses tried to remove the packing the night after surgery.  Dr. Alwan informed me that the pain was normal and part of the healing process and sent me home the next day. I experienced burning, dryness, perineum pain, inflammation, multiple UTI's and bladder infections in the months following my surgery.  I had multiple follow up visits with Dr. Alwan to solve the problem, however he offered no viable solution.  At no point did he feel the sling was causing me pain/complications. I reached out to my insurance and they sent me to 4 different doctors and none of them wanted to touch me as they weren't sure if removing the sling would alleviate my pain.   During this time, I experienced suicidal thoughts as the burning pain and nerve irritation caused by my sling was unbearable.  I was prescribed various ointments and pain meds to treat anxiety, depression and pain as a result of this surgery.  I am still attending physical therapy sessions in hopes of improving my situation. I ended up spending $20k out of pocket to have a private doctor remove the sling 9 months after the initial surgery.  Upon removal, he discovered that the sling had been implanted too deep into my right pelvic bone in addition to my perineum being over tightened.  This was the reason for extreme pain, UTI's, burning, inflammation and bladder infections.    Unfortunately, I have developed complications such as scar tissue and a prolapse due to having two major surgeries in less than a year.  I cannot stand for long periods of time and must use a wheel chair. Please proceed with caution if you choose to have Dr. Alwan perform surgery.  I can tell you from experience that I have had a difficult time trying to find any doctor that could help me.  You pretty much will be on your own and even if you are able to find help, no doctor will guarantee that you will recover 100%, if at all. read more

Ratings as a doctor and professional Dr. Alwan is beyond exceptional extremely intelligent and truly the perfect person to deliver new life into this world. Dr. Alwan has delivered all three of my babies and Although the wait can be long at times but Dr. Alwan is worth every minute. His practice is a small one so if your looking to be remembered and to establish a great relationship with the person bring your baby into the world this is your doctor. If your looking to get in and get out go to a larger practice with a tons of PA and doctors and when it's time to deliver your baby the person will be a total stranger (Dr. Stranger). Dr. Alwan never let me down and assured I had the best treatment and accommodations with all three of my deliveries. He showed up checked on me and arrived on time to deliver each of my babies. With my last baby I had some complications Dr. Alwan went out of his way and popped up before attending a dinner with his son and made sure I had received the medical treatment required at the time. Dr's are both amazing. Watch your billing statements, EOB's, all of it. They rely on the fact that you may not know billing. OB/GYN;s are not specialist and they charge specialist co-pays. I had to fight for a refund, had to send them my EOB because "they never got it". Was told they could have charged me the full-rate if they wanted too (told by Alex the billing manager). Providers offices are contracted through insurance companies at SET RATES. I am in the process of reporting them for fraud with Anthem. If you have questions, call your ins company, DO NOT CALL THEM. Currently fighting why I was charged a co-pay, for a visit they never sent to my INS company (because it was post-op, and they know its covered under the surgery post-op days and was not a new visit). Just, watch your billing. Its shameful, because both Dr's are wonderful but def find another office. Its not worth the headache and money. read more

Due to my experience with Dr. Alwan, I would not recommend him. I went to him for a bladder lift in November due to prolapse. My life has not been the same due to complications from that surgery. He performed a second surgery three weeks later to try and correct the problem, but it did not help. I left his care on the medical advise of my general doctor and friends. I sought the help of a specialist which incurred an additional surgery and thousands of dollars in additional medical bills. Dr. Alwan has never contacted me to follow up and see how I was doing. I've had a couple of appointments over the last (almost) two years. The PA or NP (not sure of title) has been great with my appointments. Back in April I had a pap done and was told the 'you'll hear back in a week if we need too and if you need anything call us' so I get my results and everything is good, never heard from them until almost two months to the date saying I needed to come in for a biopsy. I'm sorry but how on earth does quest forget to send these results and MOOOOST IMPORTANT how do you not tell your patient for two months? I was obviously frustrated since no young healthy woman wants to hear this after so many weeks have gone by. I don't know truly how this was miscommunicated from quest to Alwan's office, the office staff in charge of that stuff should make sure this doesn't happen often. I was upset on the phone call and trying to understand what I need to do next, I apologized for being upset with the poor lady. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else in the future, risking someone's health 'accidentally' can lead to a bigger issue for some. I continue to be a patient here based off past experiences. 4/5 visits have been great. So, I'm hoping to never run into something like this again. read more

Dr. Alwan was treating me the second time I got pregnant which also ended up being the second time I had a miscarriage. Sure, the wait times in his office were long, and sometimes appointments got cancelled or mixed up, and I really didn't get to spend much time with him, but he was still better than the other OBs I had been to. Once I found out I was pregnant again (the third time in a year, with the first two ending in miscarriages), I made an appointment with Dr. Alwan. I was planning on doing my 1st trimester prenatal appointments with him to make sure the pregnancy was viable, but ideally wanted to deliver at home or a birth center. The nurse at my first appointment took down my information and when she asked me whether I planned to deliver at San Antonio, I told her my plan was to hopefully deliver with a midwife. She told me I wouldn't be able to see Dr. Alwan anymore if that was the case. She insisted he only took on patients who were committed to delivering with him at the hospital and he wouldn't do a home birth. They wouldn't even let me finish my appointment. Perhaps this is common practice for a doctor, but it's still disappointing. read more

Dr Alwan delivered my first baby at San Antonio so i decided to switch to him because he was awesome. I've also seen Danielle a couple of times and she's great as well. I have not had any problems with this practice until today. My appointment was at 10:10 and i got there at 10. I sat there watching people who came after me come in and get seen, then leave afterwards. I didn't get called to get my vitals taken until 11. I got told to sit back in the waiting room so that a room can get cleaned up. 10 minutes later, i get taken to the room where i wait for 30 more minutes before I came out and inquired about what was going on. The nurse (who i should mentioned is always nice to me whenever i encounter her) apologetically informed me that Danielle was running behind and i was her next patient. I decided to just reschedule because i was always running late for class. I didn't mind the waiting because i know the pregnant women are always priority. However, I absolutely hated the fact that i wasn't made aware that i would be waiting that long. I mean i scheduled that appointment time for a reason. I would have appreciated it if someone communicated with me and let me know what was going on so i can either wait or reschedule. Especially seeing as i had my baby with me who kept crying at intervals. That would have been the nice and empathetic thing to do. I really loved Dr Alwan and his practice. However, I will be looking for another practice where communication is one of their priorities. read more

I strongly encourage anyone considering Dr. Alwan's office to read their entire medical benefits booklet. It is long, but it tells you exactly how you should be being billed. I saw Dr. Alwan three times, and each time I was billed at a specialist rate. I researched my copays and it mentioned maternity care was a $30.00 Copay. In addition, a specialist is defined as any doctor who is not a family practice, pediatrician, Obstetrician, or gynecologist. So not only was I being seen for maternity care, but he was also not a specialist according to my insurance. So I called the office to let them know this. A girl named Quinn told me my first visit was a "meet and greet" which doesn't qualify as maternity. My 2nd visit was for my first OB appointment which doesn't qualify as a maternity visit. My 3rd visit was for a UTI, but she said that was a specialist appointment. So to them, none of my visits are in relation to me being pregnant and receiving maternity care. Then I told them even if it doesn't meet the maternity care standard, they are not a specialist according to my insurance. So Quinn had the office manager call me back. The office manager confirmed what Quinn had said and said she would re verify my benefits after I let her know that my Explanation of Benefits for the claims they submitted both came back with a 30.00 copay. The office manager informed me she hadn't received my EOB yet. A month later I never received a call back, my copay suddenly went down to 30.00 when I did go back but of course no mention of refunding for the overcharge on copays. Bottom line: These providers sign contracts with the insurance companies to bill at particular rates. They breached contract so I had no choice but to file a grievance with my insurance and change doctors. P.s. If you change doctors, they charge you 35.00 for your medical records, and it takes 2 weeks for them to get your medical records. read more

The first time I came and waited for 15 mins after being called to the window and was told my appt is actually scheduled for the following week. I asked if they could squeeze me in and she told me that wasn't possible. After driving far, waking up early for my appt and worked last night I was really frustrated. When I scheduled the appt over the phone the same Asian secretary girl never f/u with a appt reminder and I even repeated it back to her bc I wrote it down. She has horrible customer service and if it wasn't for my family's urgency for me to see an ob/gyn I wouldn't come back at all. Update soon... ***update***Came back for my actual appt and appt lasted for 10 mins. No exam was done instead was told to get my blood drawn for labs with outside carriers and come back with results. I love doctor alwan, his nurse practitioners and staff. I have had very rough pregnancies with hyperemesis and gestational diabetes and they have taken such good care of me by helping me with medications to help me keep food and water down so I can keep my blood sugars up. The nurse practitioner's always listened to my concerns and did what they could to help me. I have been to both the rancho and upland office and only ever had amazing experiences. She shouldn't be working in a customer service job she's angry and seems to take it out on patients which is just terrible especially where women want to feel welcome. This practice is sincerely one of the best. This is my second year in a row as a patient for my pregnancies. I am considered a high risk patient and they have met all of my needs so far and I can only anticipate it to continue this way! Everyone from the front office receptionist to the back office medical assisting staff and of course the providers are AH-MAZING ! When there are urgent matters pending they do all they can to make sure you are seen in a timely manner. I personally have never waited more than 30 min to be pulled in for my appointments and THAT alone is wonderful! Especially considering that once you are back there as a patient, they in no way make the visit feel rushed. I thankfully haven't had an issues with the billing department thus far and I have an HMO plan. I will update this as my insurance is changing to a PPO. No problems with medical records or getting forms taken care of for work or school. They are current in the way in which they communicate. They send text reminders for appointments. Normal results are also sent through text which is super convenient. Prescription refills can sometimes be approved through a simple phone call depending on what the prescription is for. Again, how awesome is this?! Dr. Mark Alwan delivered my first born and he was the absolute best!!I healed so well and suffered minimal pain afterwards. My delivery was complicated and when he let me know we would have to do an emergency c section he made sure I felt at ease. Thank you !!! Dr. Fakhari is so kind, so patient and so caring. Its not a facade. One can usually gauge when this is the case. She is always so welcoming and humble. Her knowledge is vast and she never makes you feel small for not knowing something. With this current pregnancy I have been seeing the NP Danielle. She has been so great to me. Always willing to answer my 5,000 question no matter how repetitive or trivial they may seem. I only give 2 stars because I wasn't smart enough to leave 3 years ago and have kept going back. Before, I was just going in for routine paps so going to the office once a year wasn't that bad. But once I got pregnant I continued to go here since they had all my medical history. Make sure to note there is AT LEAST a 45 min-1 hour wait any time you go in, whether for pap or OB checkup! During my pregnancy I was asked to reschedule appointments twice, after already waiting almost an hour, due to the office being so backed up. I get Dr.s have to go do deliveries but I feel that's why NPs are there, to make sure chaos doesn't ensue to the wait room. My last straw was today. I'm due in 1.5 weeks and got a phone call that the NP I was suppose to see (Dr. Is out on training) isn't coming into the office today and that I can see a different NP at a later time or my original NP on a different day. The office takes no consideration that people work and make arrangements for these appointments and can't just reschedule when they say jump. After this birth and initial check ups, I will not be coming back to this office. read more

I was referred to Dr. Mark Alwan for PCOS and they were able to help me to have my second child and get regular periods again. Other doctors always told me it was normal that I didn't get periods being that I was only 23 years old it did not seem right to me I kept looking for help for almost 5 years and then I was referred to them by my primary doctor and 8 months later I was pregnant and I could not believe it. The delivery was quick and all my office visits were perfect I could have not asked for a better team. Dr. Alwan is simply Amazing. He is very nice, compassionate and takes his time once he is in the room with you. He is VERY BUSY but YOU as the patient can schedule your appointments ahead of time to make sure that your appointment is with the doctor himself. I requested only to see him and when I did have troubles with my pregnancy I saw Jan Berry his Nurse Practitioner and she is very nice. His Ultra Sound Tech is the sweetest of the office staff....she knew our baby had been a big blessing to us as we tried for a while to conceive and when it came down to determining the sex of our baby girl....our baby was covering up but she did not give up she quickly did some tricks and got clear shots ensuring that it was indeed a baby princess. Delivery was smooth on doctor's part .....2 and 1/2 pushes and the baby was out. He took pictures with baby and all.....Sweetest OBGYN! Thanks Dr. Alwan! I've been coming to this doctor for all three of my pregnancies and I had always had a great level of care from dr. Alwan and Dr.Fakhrai as well as Danielle, but this pregnancy Iv only seen dr.Alwan once and dr fakhrai is gone so Iv been seeing Danielle my whole pregnancy. The reason I am giving 3 stars is because of there level of care has gone down with my 3rd pregnancy, I called them today in regards to my blood sugar being high for the past three weeks and that my high risk pregnancy doctor told me last week that I'm at risk for my baby dying. I asked who I will be seeing next week for my final appointment which I will be at 34 weeks, I was told some Random PA I've never even heard of or seen before. What bothered me the most was the receptionist didn't bother to place me on hold and at least contact my doctor about what was going on, she just made it seem like there was nothing that could be done read more

Yes sometimes there's wait times, but that's why I schedule first thing in the morning. He's also very gentle and patient oriented. Dr Alwan and his team are great! My insurance is on a fiscal year and renews in Dec, they were willing to work with me on my payments until I got my FSA then. I had previously seen Dr Alwan in 2006 for large ovarian cysts I had on my ovaries. The surgery went so well, there was no question I wanted him as my OBGYN for my pregnancy. There is a slight wait time in office when you go to you appointment, but honestly, I've never been to a medical doctor that calls you back at appointment time.
