I went through a number of potential candidates in the Bay Area and Dr. Lawler was the first surgeon that made me feel fully confident in the path forward. In particular, I appreciated his determination to get me to 100% from a sport performance perspective- I felt that he really cared about the difference between a 80% recovery and a 100% recovery. I'm still early on in the recovery process, but so far everything has gone smoothly. I experienced significally less pain after my procedure than expected based on my online research and onversations with friends (though this could certainly also be due to the specifics of my own case). A couple of things I appreciated about the experince: - Dr. Lawler spent nearly an hour talking me through the decision to get the surgery and answering my questions without rushing me. - Kate Donnelly (his PA) was a great communicator and made me feel secure in my treatment. - The office team did a good job providing me the necessary information and following up with me about medications and paperwork. I spoke with Marcy who was very polite and knowledgeable. She took plenty of time to clearly answer my questions related to the surgery and the healing process. She explained the 10 or so images that Dr Lawler had taken during the procedure one at a time. My experience with Dr Lawler's office has been consistently positive. He was very personable, very informative, highly skilled, assured, and "available" .... even gave me his personal mobile number in case there may be an urgent question or issue before or afterwards. That is rare. This same hernia repair was attempted 1.5 years prior by a Dr. Edward Alfrey at Marin Health - he was a disaster. Stay away!! His "repair" failed completely, after obliterating my stomach & belly button. The hernia came back with a vengeance, the size of a tennis ball. Plus he was incredibly rude, condescending and dismissive throughout, like he hated his job, hated his patients and just wanted you gone. When I went back post-surgery to show him the recurrence, he told me "You'll just have to live with it." ... "it" being a tennis ball sized hernia. Only afterwards did I read many other "horror story" reviews of Dr. Edward Alfrey. Happy Ending: The next referring surgeon (mentioned above) immediately pronounced the hernia life threatening and referred me to Dr. Bozuk. In Feb '26 Dr. Bozuk used laparascopic surgery to go under the abdominal wall and close up with mesh, etc, from beneath. He also found two other small "budding" hernias he took care of as well. Surgery took 2.5 hours, I was out of the hospital 1.5 hours after completion of surgery. Results - like I never had a hernia. Nightmare ended. I feel very grateful and lucky to have found Dr. Bozuk.
