First of all, I want to thank friends for all of your support regarding my medical issues as posted in my review and updates. A warm thank you to a reviewer of this doctor for dedicating so much of her review to me...ahhh, shucks. Yet, as I mentioned to that person via a message, the Information "she" posted is not true. Another update to clarify just one thing...I am still in pain following this crummy breast lump surgery. And yes, I am still seeking medical help for further diagnosis And pain issues. The errors in that review and other information (hints) posted by the person makes me suspicious of that review as a whole. Repeat...interesting. We all have our own unique experiences and have the right to write our reviews accordingly. My experiences with this doctor are real; not perceived. I welcome anybody to walk in my shoes for a day. I will happily update this when I learn more via further testing that I have to endure. FYI, folks... you may not give a darn about any medical reviews if you're in good health today. Yet, at some point in our lives, I think most of us endure health issues that need addressing at some point. Another FYI I have learned though extensive research that there are surgeons who take a much lesser invasive approach to surgery than this doctor. And another FYI If your doctor refers you to a specialist, take the referral with a grain Of salt and do your own homework. There may be reasons doctors refer patients to particular doctors. As a nurse, I am very selective on the Doctors that I choose to seek treatment from. When I first met Dr. Dat Nguyen, I felt that he was the doctor that I wanted to perform the surgery that I needed. He took his time to explain to my and my husband the procedure; he was very thorough on his examination. He was concerned with my pre-op labs and called me before the surgery to have them repeat it to make sure everything was fine. After the surgery he and his office staff have been wonderful in answering all my questions. I felt I have been treated with outmost respect and most of all like part of a family. I chose to use Dr. Dat Tien Nguyen after doing careful research online in March of 2010. After a lifetime battle with obesity I decided to have bariatric surgery. I was not referred to Dr. Nguyen by anyone but my own research and I also read the negative review by Sun E. prior to my first visit. This is what I found: Dr. Nguyen is a very serious surgeon. He is very particular about procedure and doing what the patient feels comfortable with. He takes his time to explain everything and answer any and all questions. If he does not know the answer to the question he does not pretend to know. I had a slight bit of reservation based on the negative experience but I understand that not every surgery works out perfectly. All medical procedures carry a risk. When I was admitted to Valley Care Hospital for surgery on 9/22/10 I was under 100% excellent care by the staff. I could tell by the reactions of the operating staff and anesthesiologist and admitting nurse that I was in very capable hands, and Dr. Nguyen was very well respected professionally and as a surgeon. My procedure was flawless and my recovery time remarkable, but I did follow 100% the surgeon and hospital's recovery instructions. My incisions are healing well, no infection, inflammation or pain. Words can't express my happiness in dealings with Dr. Nguyen. I saw him earlier this year for gastric bypass surgery and I must say that not only do I find him to be a surgeon at the very top of his skill but a very patient man as well. I tend to ask a-lot of questions, how does this work, what happens next, and so on and so on. Dr Nguyen not only answered ALL of my questions but made the time to explain until I felt I could understand and fully comprehend what he was saying. How many Drs. do you know who will do that these days? His staff is impeccable, kind, organized and even remembered my name each time they saw me. Most importantly let's get to the surgery date, I was nervous but fully informed, the staff was excellent and I came in contact with nurses that had been right where I was, they had had the surgery themselves and felt as highly about Dr. Nguyen as I did and walked me through the whole process with great care and knowledge (Valley Care you amaze me!!) Before the procedure Dr. Nguyen came to check on me and see if I had any more questions (of course I did) and how I was doing. But here is the kicker for me, afterwards in recovery I woke up and there he was sitting down waiting to see how I felt and YES, if I had any more questions (which I did). This kind of treatment is the epitome of a classy doctor and I have heard he's like that with all of his patients. I researched Dr. Nguyen before this procedure and was very impressed by all of the other surgeons that respect him as well as the fact that he is a pioneer in his field and has preformed I think thousands of these surgeries, so I knew he was great at what he did. A lifetime to suffering due to his incompetence! Gastric bypass surgery done by him in 2008 and still have yet to live a decent day in 2017, 6 surgeries later due to mistakes he made and still not 100 percent back, surgery 2010 by him, in 2012 be another doctor, in 2014, and last 3 surgeries all between Jan 2016 and June 2016 all due to mistakes made during my original bypass, I have nearly died in 2012 and 2016 due to lack of nutrition and lack of eating from internal complication. He is a nice person however Bariatric should not be his specialty! I am writing a book on this and I will be clear with all the details and suffering I had to endure. read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Nguyen. He seemed very professional. He referred me to his clerk, Jennifer and she seemed pleasant enough for the initial meeting. I was told that she would call me on Friday to give me the cost . Jennifer and the doctor said that if she didn't call to call her on Friday. Friday Came no call.. I called she was off on that day and I was told that she would call me back on Monday. No call. I called and requested the cost and also needed a letter from the doctor so that I could suspend my curves exercise program. I required this letter 10 days prior to the curves billing date. Jennifer refused to provide me with a letter and said that they would give to me when the surgery was performed. which would put me in a posture to pay an additional month to curves . And to make matters worst, still no cost estimate. She said that she would get back to me with that prior to the surgery. Do I trust her, when she seems totally incompetent....? Because of his staff, I tend to worry about the surgical care he will provide. Update: I made an appointment with another surgeon, who examined me and said that If I had proceeded with the surgery Dr. Nguyen had recommended. There was a 40% chance that I would have needed another surgery in a few years. The surgery I will have in a week is less intrusive and the recovery time will be much faster. read more

While Dr. Nguyen may be a good doctor, I would NOT RECOMMEND him. His office staff has been more interested in playing the blame game than making sure they are processing paperwork correctly. I had a procedure in February and it is now mid-June and his office staff has wrung their hands of the paperwork processing. I have 100% coverage for the procedure, however the paperwork submitted and processed is leaving me with a $1000 outstanding balance due. My company HR department and the insurance company have tried to work with the office staff to bring this to closure only to have Dr. Nguyen's office staff more interested in blaming others than taking ownership of the issue and seeing that it is resolved. I HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE with a doctor's office and paperwork. I have left multiple messages to speak with the doctor about my issues, have dropped off documentation for him to review and see the challenges I have been having and either he could care less or his office staff does not want him to see it. Either way, it is not good. Stay away or you too may be expected to pay for something you have insurance to cover. read more

I was sent to Dr. Nguyen after an inconvenient, if not uncommon, problem fitting his specialties came up. My GP was glad to refer him. You don't want details, I assure you. I found myself in very good hands. Dr. Nguyen is cautious in his approach, willing to do tests, examinations, and so forth to make sure he can identify or rule out problems and avoid unecessary procedures - or even determine if you need a different specialist. When surgery was required, he took a minimally invasive approach (and I can report, happily, no side effects) spread out over time to ensure the best results. He's also monitored my healing very well, and helped me put my condition into perspective - this, being my first surgery, definitely required me to get a dose of perspective. When my healing from the first phase was slow, he wisely ran some extra tests to see if it was complicated by various unpleasant possibilities - and not only gave my wife a run down after the tests, he called me personally, in the evening, to let me know the full results. Fortunately, the tests were negative, and allowed him to diagnose the cause of my slow healing (a mild but extremely persistent surface infection) and treat me effectively . I had the final surgery and healed completely, with no side effects. He also keeps some useful flyers at the office that are very helpful (be sure to get the one on a high fiber diet, its fantastic), and he likes pateints to be informed, and will refer you to other resources. Like most doctors, if you have concerns, it's best to take a written list with you. His office staff is exceptional - they are very friendly, very helpful, extremely well informed, and patient. I recall when, still under anesthesia after my surgery, I had to call to check on a wound care issue, and they dealt with my incoherent state quite well. If like me, you're under care for awhile, they quickly get to know your name, face and voice, providing the kind of personal service that's really needed in medicine. I first met with Dr Nguyen in May for my consultation. He and his assistant Monica were wonderful! By Late July I was ready for my surgery. Monica informed me that the Doctors schedule was already bring booked out into September. I literally cried to her! I'm a school teacher so I needed to have surgery and be recovered before school started back in. We scheduled my surgery, sadly, in September. But the following week Monica called me very excited to tell me they had an opening in the schedule the following week. I was/am so touched that she cared enough to think of me when that opening came up. Dr. Nguyen was great throughout the entire process. I had my Gastric Bypass on June 10, 2013 I had it done in the Manteca, ca office and everything has been great so far. I have not had any complications. I did go through the process a little sketchy at first. The staff did not seem to know what they were doing. I was there when they made the change in staffing so, getting everything in order was an ordeal. I know about having bad staff and having to correct that persons mistakes so i gave them time and the office lady's got everything in order. If I have any questions they get back to me quickly. I am very pleased with the office lady's and they have a lot of personality. Sometimes I do wait a little while but I know that Dr. Nguyen is just being thorough with each of his patience. In April of 2004 Dr Dat Nguyen performed gastric bypass surgery on me. Prior to going to him, I did research on him. His history and qualifications were superb. He is an excellent surgeon, meticulous, caring and very thorough. He truly cares about his patients. He has answered all my questions (and I had plenty before surgery) and continues to take whatever time necessary to address any other health concerns (vitamins, exercise, etc.) that I may have. I can respect that everyone has their own individual experiences and issues. I was referred to Dr. N. by my PCP, because he had had another patient see Dr. N. for weight loss surgery (which was the reason for seeking him out). The experience I had with both Dr. N and Doctor's Hospital of Manteca was the best possible first surgical experience I could have asked for. It took me a while to get to surgery because it took a while for me to lose the necessary weight to shrink my liver enough for surgery. Comparing to other Doctors, the program headed by Dr. N is very much doable and an overall good experience. He requires that all prerequisites have been met before we even submit to insurance. So there was a lot of hard work involved. But by the time my surgery came around I felt prepared, and mostly at ease (for my first surgery there was little to no nerves because I felt well informed and confident in Dr. N as a surgeon). The first two weeks post-op had been alright, but by week three I was starting to get a pretty bad bout of nausea. I called his office today and within a few hours his office called back to let me know that he prescribed me another medication for nausea, and just as I got off the phone with his office, CVS called and had my prescription ready. It's been a couple hours since I took the new medication and I am FINALLY feeling normal again. The first initial appointment I had a year and a half ago I was 400lbs, and now I am 343lbs! That first consult there was a bit of a wait time, but that's to be expected with a specialist, I've waited longer at offices before. His staff was always friendly and helpful and kind, as well. Overall, I had a wonderful experience with Dr. N. I have no regrets and I am very happy with everything he's done for me. Before the surgery, he came to see me in the prep room and definitely put my family at ease. When my younger sister asked to make sure that he was going to take care of me, he put them at ease by letting them know that Doctors don't want complications anymore than a patient does, and that he is confident that everything will go well, despite the obvious risks to surgery. I don't know what other kinds of experiences people have had, but mine was nothing but wonderful. I highly recommend Dr. Nguyen for surgery. After reading several negative reviews about him and his practice I was tormented with fear about having weight loss surgery. However, Monica, Dr. Nguyen medical assistant spent numerous times answering my questions and easing my fears, I thought surely she would get tired of my countless calls. When I met with Dr. Nguyen he was honest and assured me that I had nothing to fear. I had surgery in March 2014 and have not had any complications whatsoever. Dr. Nguyen was the last person I saw on the day of surgery and the first person I saw in recovery. He really cares about his patients, I still cant believe how he is able to personally see his patients while traveling between his Pleasanton and Modesto offices. He really made me feel comfortable and cared about just as a doctor should. Before the surgery, I faced yet another roadblock with my insurance, I was devastated again. I wrote a letter to Dr. Ngyuen practically begging him for help and emailed it to him late at night, the very next morning he called and assured me that he wasn't going to give up on me and was fighting for me. To say the least, he kept his word. I was very impressed and happy that he cared enough to help me. Overall, Dr. Nguyen did an excellent job, my wounds healed perfectly and I only needed pain medicine for two days, and the hospital stay was the best experience. I stayed in the hospital for 3 days although I could have gone home in 2 days. What I am most impressed about is the fact that I had been through the entire weight loss process and at the last weight loss session the previous doctor decided to drop me due to insurance issues. When I came to Dr. Nguyen he gladly agreed to help me. He understood what I had gone through and the devastation and depression that it had caused me. He examined me and did NOT require me to lose a lot of weight like most programs do which was a relief because despite all my efforts I had not been able to lose weight on my own previously. Since my surgery in March I have lost 39 pounds and my health issues have been resolved. I am so glad I decided not to listen to the negative reviews about my surgeon, he absolutely helped me get my health back in order and now I am living less limited and feeling better than I have in years. I had gastric bypass surgery from Dr. Nguyen in May of 2010. I was 59 years old. I weighted 295 lbs. I had no life at all. I never left my home. Dr Nguyen gave me back my life. I had my surgery in May and lost over 150 lbs. in less than 1 year. I am at 149 now and look fabulous. I had no problems, I had the energy to exercise and really play golf and spend time with my husband and live again. If you are thinking of having bariatric surgery Dr Nguyen is the man to see. Ive read all of this persons experience with Doctor Dat Tien Nguyen Iam very surprised at her perceived experience I dont agreewith her analysis even as she relates it. Why? This DR saved mylife 1. She complains about waiting 20 minutes for a doctor for pain she was having. If the pain was so great she would wait any amount of time to see such a gifted surgeon as Dr Dat Tien Nguyen so whining about waiting time to see a doctor that can make available time for appointment is rare is most cases. 2. Pain can be a very compelling reason to wait for a trained gifted doctor on call to service a local emergency room equipped hospital. 3. Her pain she does not state if the pain was relieved or lessened just blamed the pain on the doctor when your doctor performed the operation never ever has any doctor guaranteed to me all pain would ever be completely eliminated although Ive had several surgeries and most the pain was relieved as best could be expected due to my injury or cause. 4. She had been told he warned her he was unable to remove all the mass it may have been a good reason he could not remove the said mass completely mayhave been to close or attached to a major blood vessel or artery which could have opened her up to direct septic problems if the mass had complication due to removal. 5. lastly never has one doctor ever said I was never going to have pain in the surgery area after the doctors work and I still have injuries inside that hurt that short of aputation which they offered me would I be able to remove the limb otherwise I would have to risk further loss of the entire limb and more to the joint possible so I opted to keep the controll and use of the limb with the amount of pain short of having to loose the limbs or more the entire leg and foot all. So her argument she had pain but was the previous pain more heightened or wasit lessened and was it bareable not every surgery is a guarantee you wont have some nerve or pain problems and never was I ever told by any doctor I would not feel pain just it should be lessen or not at all. I was sent to Dr Dat Tien Nguyen MD and he has twice saved my life once from a absess caused by a car wreck on the freeway 580 caused by a bone fragment that went septic at the base of my spine I woke one morning years after the car wreck and my spine skin had this large boil in the skin surface he diagnosed and surgery'd as septic which was poisoning my blood system a portion fragment of my spine had broken off and had been irratating my back and lower bowel and had mannefested as a absess boil on the base of the spine as my body worked to eliminate the fragment of bone thus the absess was inside for years causing me major pain but I did not know why I had this trancient pain for years. Dr Dat Nguyen had it diagnosed and admitted me to E/R and even held me walking me to the E/R with a wheelchair to ease my pain he rushed my paperwork so I would not suffer more pain than need be and according to my primary saved my life from the septic shock had I waited to go see my primary the wait would have been deadly. So I specifically would trust this man to docotr me in any fashion wait any amount of time and fully trust his medical abilities he is a god send having recovered and his bedside and tender care made my wife cry he took such personal care to ensure I was conmfortable and he made my convelescence to recovery his utmost priority and the man went out of his way to check on me day and night and when I asked for pain meds in the recovery days after my surgery in the middle of the night asked for pain meds he had left orders for them ahead of time the amounts and several backup meds and had made orders also for drip IV with antibiotics to clear my blood stream of the infectious septic problems he ordered me heated blankets steamed since he knew I would wake with chills due to the meds and the weeakness I would experience. I have to say the second time on a second totally different subject time Dr Dat Tien Nyugen was called to the E/R for me for he was the on call attending E/R doctor for gastrointestinal work. I awoke two years after he saved my life from that abcess and was throwing up violently rolling in pain major abdominal upper pain was in the E/R 6 hours in pain after tossing and turning all night long in pain and throwing up limp as a rag not wanting to go to a doctor but knew I needed to be seen. My wife forced me to go to E/R after the six hours waiting and being tested to find the cause for my pain and throwing up I was empty dry heaving in pain no longer able to muster more than clear liquid and a few drops of blood since my stomach started to bring up blood. I think the only problem that I have with this office is how long you have to wait to get into the doctors office and how long it takes to get an answer back from the doctor. Overall the staff is a 10 plus. They go way out of their way and have an A plus attitude towards their patients which helps balance off the time you have to wait for the doctor. The doctor is a busy guy so he is very fortunate to have a staff like he does that cares and does the best that they can to take care of what matters and that is the patient. Good evening, I am just coming out of another successful surgery this late afternoon with Dr. Dat Nguyen. (Well enough to write an Five Star Review) This is the fourth surgery I have had with him in the past 6 years - all of them painless and extremely successful. Dr. Nguyen is a very knowledgable and compassionate doctor who considers his patients first before just doing procedures to make money, unlike many doctors. He is truly passionate about his profession as he has taken time to get to know is patients. His notes are very detaied and he made sure that I understood the entire process well. We discussed all aspects of my condition, surgery and the healing process. For those above who have complained about past office staff, they are not the ones treating you nor doing surgery. Office staff can come and go. Secondly, the current ladies who work there are wonderful Monica & Christina - they worked hard to get me right before Thanksgiving as I requested even though originally there was not an open spot. They have a super sweet demeanor and are always kind and sweet. As for Dr. Dat Nguyen, he is extremely Honest and has alot of Integrity. Some patients reviews for being still in pain?? Why are you blaming the doctor for your own nerves response to pain. That is your own body and lack of pain tolerance. Im doing just fine myself... for a typically painful procedure. Dr. Dat Nguyen saved my life! For years I had suffered with chronic constipation. I would go to the bathroom once every three weeks. I would end up in the Emergency Room, only to be told there was nothing wrong and it was in my head. I would end up in the hospital for two to three weeks at a time draining out my insides through the NG (nasogastric) tube due to severe blockage. I always had a green cast to my skin and was a walking bio-hazard. Constant chronic pain, swelling and nausea took over my entire life. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, I couldn't do any of the things I enjoyed. It was extremely frustrating as I fell into a deep depression and I lost many friends and even family who thought I had become a hypochondriac. I actually started to question myself believing maybe I was crazy, as no one could figure out what was wrong. I saw numerous specialists at Kaiser, Sutter, Stanford, etc, but yet no answers. Then one day a friend invited me to a networking event. I almost cancelled as I was throwing up all morning, but I decided to go. This meeting ended up saving my life. I met a lady, who quickly became like family. She took one look at me and new I was struggling immensely. She asked me what my symptoms were and the next thing I knew, I was on my way to the Emergency Room at Valley Care in Pleasanton. She had actually contacted Dr. Dat Nguyen to let him know she was bringing him a new patient and it was serious. At that moment I met the Doctor who would end up saving my life. I was dying a slow death with all of the toxins in my body. Dr. Dat Nguyen admitted me and ran several tests. I admit, I wasn't the easiest patient to deal with as I had been down this path many times before. However, this time I quickly realized the tests were completely different and I also had motility studies done to confirm his findings. Dr. Dat Nguyen was very direct with his findings and explained everything in a way I could understand. I appreciated his direct approach as I was looking for answers. I didn't want a doctor to sugar coat anything or tell me again it was in my head. I was so glad he finally found the problem and I wasn't crazy. However, my situation was much worse than I had expected. Dr. Dat Nguyen had to remove my entire colon as there was nothing that could be done to repair it. In addition, I also had to have my gallbladder removed. At that moment I told Dr. Dat Nguyen I was way too young to have a colostomy bag. I was only 43 years old at the time. I refused the bag and told Dr. Nguyen that I would also refuse the surgery if the bag was going to be the outcome. Dr. Nguyen admitted me into the hospital again for the weekend so I could get fluids and antibiotics. I think he was also hoping to change my mind, but it didn't happen. I admit I am stubborn, but as a young single woman - the bag just didn't fit into my lifestyle. I did a lot of research in regards to the bag and I didn't want the expense, maintenance and complications that the bag has to offer. Dr. Dat Nguyen really understood my situation and found a way to remove my entire colon without a colostomy bag. I do have some complications from the surgery, but nothing can compare to the days when I would go to the bathroom once every three weeks. Now that the dust has settled, we realized a recalled mesh screen needs to come out and he has referred me to the appropriate specialist who will be handling the situation.
