I called in, spoke to a woman there gave her all my information. She said they were gonna call me back and help me. She was very nice and I thought they would call me back. I never received a call back from anybody from the store. She said that the actual owner was gonna call me back. Maybe they just weren't interested. I don't know. They seemed interested. So my review is not on if they are good or bad or anything just that I never received a call back at all. So it's really unfair to give them anything of a star rating. read more

I want to sell several of my quality antiques that I purchased in Manhattan, NYC, and Mark Lawson Antiques, Inc. does not readily allow walk-ins that want to sell antiques, one needs to email photos. I do not like emailing photos of my private collection. I did email photos of two of my antiques, an 18th Century Spain leather bound cover with antique antiphonal purchased from William Doyle Galleries in NYC, and an antique Asian vase purchased in the 1970s from at an antique shop in Manhattan, NY. Several days later, I receive an email that he forwarded the information about the 18th Century book to an antique dealer that specializes in old manuscripts and similar--but that was located further away, and no mention of the Asian vase that is of unknown metal alloy photo I emailed. With the Lawson website, I thought I could just bring quality antiques there and get cash/check for them. I will never buy another antique again, difficult to resell, often pawnshop prices in Upstate, NY--the antique marketplace handbook does not apply in Upstate, NY. I recently sold a pair of 18th Century European portrait oil paintings that Sotheby quoted as worth $1,500 (fifteen hundred dollars) for a measly $150 (one hundred fifty dollars) to another antique buyer in Albany, NY. Very sad, and disappointing, and weird. Many antique shops in the Albany, NY area closed the recent years. Another NYS disaster. It goes beyond this, as a mixed race female, pre-senior, I see Upstate, NY not allowing friendly business situation for me, had to change to different self-employment business type three times so far--had organic agricultural business and was subverted; my agricultural invention, the grant getting initiative for my working prototypes subverted and red tape; working as a vender selling quality antiques to antique shops, not a real opportunity for me. read more

The worst mistake I've made in years is bringing my items to Mark Lawson for appraisal / sale. Seller beware. You will get ripped off.

I went today to get some insight into some items I had found at estate sales. Regretfully, I was not satisfied with my experience. I was told that (by Mark Lawson) that he normally doesn't just give appraisals. I informed him that I would be willing to sale anything for the right price. From that point forward, I felt as though I was beneath him and was perceived as ignorant. He tried to "educate" me about how to test silver since I had an item I knew to be silver. However, I believe Mark Lawson needs to be educated. He tested my item and poured the acid right on it and proceeded to tell me that it wasn't real silver that it was silver plated. I'm smart enough to know that you never pour the acid directly to an antiquity item in the event of possibly ruining the item. Im very disappointed. I found his lack of eye contact and dismissive attitude to be of lack luster. read more

I am very satisfied when working with Mark. He takes his time and one feels he is honest with his appraisals. I was very impressed with his expert handling of many family rings I brought last month. He checked each one to ascertain the karat weight. I trust him to pay a fair value for each item. I enthusiastically recommend him to my family and friends. read more

I scheduled an appointment with Mark Lawson to do a complete estate appraisal more than a month in advance. We agreed that he would do a write up of the approximate value to the estate and highlight any key items for $375.00. A few days before my appointment his secretary called me to rescheduled and pushed my appointment out more than month and a half. The day of the appointment Mark Lawson was about a half an hour late. He casually walked in and acted as though he was annoyed and bothered by being there. He pointed out the ballpark prices of some furniture noting that the market was depressed and said there wasn't anything that stood out to him as having good value. We showed him about 250 photos (on a laptop) of china, vases, plates etc and he clicked through them so fast I don't know how he could have possibly know what the pictures were of. He glanced at the photos so quickly I was having trouble fallowing what they were, and I was the one who had taken the photos. He declared there was nothing there of any value. After the pictures he quickly scanned the kitchen we were in and abruptly asked if this was it. He suggested we not sell any items piece by piece, as this would reduce the interest of the people who might attend the estate sale. He recommended that we call his friend when then time came for said estate sale. Fortunately, we got a second opinion and found that this would better serve his friend and her commission than our own interests. At that point he requested his payment of $375 for his scheduled hour and promptly left half an hour early. What was especially off putting was he left his car running the whole time as though he never intended on staying long. We never received our write up of the value of the estate, and in hindsight I'm not surprised because he made no attempt to take notes while doing his hasty walkthrough. We felt that Mark Lawson was demeaning and dismissive in a house that has multiple rooms that are packed with antiques. He acted as if his paid visit was a waste of his time. We've subsequently obtained the opinion of other antique dealers and have received professional appraisals and feedback as to the true value of our estate. After doing our own research on eBay and other auction sites, their appraisals seem to better match the market value of these antiques. If you're considering using Mark Lawson's services save yourself the time money and aggravation and look elsewhere. read more

I made an appointment for a "free" appraisal, and when I got there, I was told they were only interested in appraising my jewelry if I was willing to sell it to them that day. They could have saved us both some time and revealed that when I made the appointment. There is something fishy going on here. read more

Very bad experience, It took me over a month just to get a response back from him to see if he could take my high end statues and just sell them. I have to agree with the previous post as well. I had Mark look at a few of my items and I would NEVER refer anyone to see him. First of all, I had to make an appt. to see him, which he was running late for, and finally, when it was my turn, he was quick to get me out. He did not even really look at my stuff at all. He had me unpack it all and show it to him. He never even touched one item to even look at the markings on them. He told me one particular item I could only get $20 for, but another dealer told me $300. When I asked him why so low of a price, he really did not have answer for me. When I asked him could he tell me anything about the item (i did my research on the item. I just wanted to see his response) he said he really didnt know anything about it. So if he doesn't know anything about my item why would he even dare to tell me its worth $20?! i proceeded to tell him I did know about the piece and I thought his offer was a low ball. I dont appreciate being made to feel stupid and talked down on and this is how this guy made me feel. He pretty much did not give me any helpful information. He didnt know any other collectors in the area who would be interested in my stuff either.....even though the FAQ section of his webpage states if he doesnt buy your items, he will refer you to someone in the area. Anyway, if you are interested in selling or having your antiques appraised, then please DO NOT go to this institution. I would never send anyone to this place. If I could give zero stars I would. As the previous Events and Program Manager at the Albany Chamber of Commerce I feel like I have a pretty good handle on businesses in the area. I made an appointment to bring in pictures of antique furniture that my mother had in the basement from her great aunt. I thought Mark would go through and give us a little insight whether any of the stuff was truly an antique or just junk. When we arrived at his office on Computer Drive he couldn't have been more rude to us. His tone, actions, and words were extremely demeaning. He acted as though we were burdening him by being there when in reality this is how he makes a living. He flipped through the pictures on my laptop so fast I didn't even know what he was doing. He told us we had a few pieces of value but didn't explain anything. I would never recommend anyone to go there and waste their time. I will also be sure to pass along my experience to everyone I come in contact with at the chamber as well as every website I can write a review on. read more
