We found Dr Mark through Yelp, and we are glad we did! My wife and I both visited him, and we are both delighted with the adjustments. He's a cool guy to talk with, even on matters non-chiropractic. We had plenty of questions on what he was doing, and he was happy to show us. For example, what was the purpose of the wedges under the pelvis that weren't symmetrically aligned? The answer: because the pelvis isn't symmetrically aligned on its own, and the wedges align it. He explained, and he showed us how he did it. Very helpful! Dr Mark is pretty cool. He might have his dogs in the office, and he might work barefoot. If you're a pretty cool client, you'll do fine. It's Pacific Beach...relax! His office is on Mission Boulevard, and there's client parking behind his building (very helpful on sunny beach days). We went to visit because our vacation house had a super squishy foam mattress and flimsy pillows, and we were sore all day. I've seen several chiropractors in my life and I'm always leery to find a new one since I've had double fusions in my lower back. Dr. Mark was recommended by my former boss, so I made an appointment. Hands down, Dr. Mark is the best chiropractor I've ever seen. Most chiros take you in, crack you, and 5 minutes later, you're done. I always spend at least 45 minutes here, as he stretches your muscles and give you a massage before and during the adjustment. He's very pleasant to chat with, as well. But when my lower back is screaming in pain, I go to a chiropractor that someone has recently recommended, not heeding the warnings from my medically trained friends. The outcome is that after multiple visits my pain is only marginally improved and that I usually end up irritated at the chiropractor over something completely nonsensical that s/he has said. Anyway, I had occasion to visit "Dr. Mark" recently, and my overall annoyance with chiropractors was greatly diminished. He did a great job explaining my problem and his therapy took the form of some adjustments and an extremely competent 25-minute massage. He asked me if I would like to return, instead of insisting that I need to return regularly many times to cure my problem. He suggested that inflammation in my something-or-other joint was the cause of my pain, and that regular, deep icing would alleviate my misery. He sent me off with some ice packs, and a better outlook on chiropractors. read more

I have been to many other chiropractors in the past and Dr. Mark is definitely in a different league. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, I was a hardened skeptic of Chiropractics and their "just 7 more sessions until you are poor and pain free" but Dr. Mark turned that upside down. I have been in so much pain and feeling so bad for the past week that I thought I was going to have to have surgery, my lower back was absolutely killing me. I Have been living on pain relievers and haven't slept through a night in at least a week. I finally went on Yelp, and found Dr. Northrup. I called him this morning and he got me in tonight. He massaged with hands and a machine and made adjustments, and I can't start to tell you the cracks that came out of my body. But I walked out of there and tonight I am free of pain. I have tired several Chiropractors over the years to relieve some shoulder and back pain. Every time I walked away feeling like my they were doing absolutely everything to maximize the payment from my insurance without providing really good care or that there was so much "wrong" with me I would need to be in that office 4 times per week and give up my first born or a kidney payment. haha After changing careers where my profession was a bit more physically demanding I was to the point were I couldn't just ignore the burning sensation and pain. Lucky for me my friend Anne referred me to Dr. Mark. Woohoo we now have a regular Chiropractor! Dr. Mark is amazing! He is so down to earth, friendly, knowledgeable and his technique is the best! He does a lot of deep pressure point massage with stretches before he ever makes an adjustment. His office is in a cute little holistic health center in P.B. and most of the time he has his sweet little "therapy" doggies there to welcome you. No heavy sales pressure to come back for certain number of visits, no BS x-rays, no insurance stuff to deal with and scheduling with him is a breeze (I send a text he gets back to me almost immediately) . Dr Mark is the man. First off he is calm and seems to be at total peace with life. In addition, he wears 16 hole combat boots in his office. Obviously he's ready to do battle with your back problems. This guy is legit. He seems to care about his patients first and his business second. My guess is he did not add his business on here. I bet a patient did. Futhermore, he can fix a neck in a single visit. I've only been to him twice and each time he relieves the pain. He's never pushed me to come back in a week or month. I can echo the comments of the others ... only I've been going to Dr. Mark for almost 20 years! His rates are extremely reasonable, he personally gives you a thorough massage before he adjusts you, making the adjustment easier because you're relaxed. And one adjustment usually alleviates my problem (whether it's a stiff neck, a pinched nerve, or TMJ). And I greatly appreciate his not running a chiropractic "mill," like others I've seen, who are trying to schedule your next visit before they've even begun the current one. I was referred to Dr. Northrup through an acquaintance and I'm glad I paid him a visit. He was very thorough with taking my medical history and what brought me in to see him. What I appreciated the most is that he didn't just start cracking my back. He actually took his time and worked on the muscles, tendons, etc. to loosen up the areas that were giving me problems. I've seen Dr. Mark every 2-4 weeks for 4 years for chronic pain and stiffness from fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. For an incredible low price i get up to 30 minutes of deep massage (with clothes on), stretching and then adjusted from head to toe. If you have special requests, just ask! Like wanting an ankle or elbow adjusted because you were playing too hard or whatever. If i had to pay the $75-100 for massages these days, plus the normal cost of chiropractic on top of all i spend on great food and supplements, i'd never be able to get this many treatments on a regular basis. Mark is unconventional and has a simple, down to earth philosophy and office space, and makes you feel like an old friend when you arrive. And if you want a hug when you leave you'll get one. He's always fun to talk with too, and just tell him if you want the music off or windows shut- he's very accommodating and aims to please, which he does! This man is a true healer. I saw him years ago for a herniated disk. He and my massage therapist kept me free of surgery and brought me to a full recovery. I was recently injured in a car accident and needed to see him again. What a difference!!!
