I used to eat here all the time when I was growing up in the 90's. I recently moved back and ordered the Mark Pi chicken with fried rice and an order or the beef on a stick. First of, the beef on a stick was superb. They were slightly sweet and well marinated. That was the best part of the meal. The fried rice tasted as if they use frozen fried rice and reheat it. It was bland. The chicken was a cheap tip off of the american classic, General Tso Chicken only not as good. The chicken was very fatty and the sauce was sickly sweet with not much of a kick...like the put pineapple juice, sugar and rice wine vinegar in a wok and cooked it down. This is NOT the the same Mark Pi's of old. It used to be an excellent place now its fallen prey to mediocrity. read more

3 times I bought a general ts'o dinner and 3/4 of the chicken was dough balls, I got shrimp toast and only 3 out of 6 had shrimp, they use to be a great place to eat, but now ,NO WAY, I paid $21.00 for 1 general ts'o, shrimp toast and 1 spring roll, got it home and couldn't eat it, I took it back and left it for them to eat, It was all there so maybe they reused it, I don't know what happen to it. very unhappy, came back home and eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, now that was good. If I am in Zanesville and craving Chinese this is my favorite place to eat. This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Zanesville since I was a young child. It is a family style restaurant with a small buffet on Sundays. The entrees at dinner time are definitely large enough to share and I have never left without leftovers for lunch the next day. All of the food is made fresh and has continued to be excellent for the 10+ years I have dined here. The only thing that was disappointing about my most recent stop were the egg rolls and fried rice. I remembered the egg rolls being much better and I usually order steamed rice but decided to try a side of fried today - stick to the steamed. Will definitely come back and may try the spring rolls next time to see if they are closer to what I remember. read more

Unfortunately the dining choices in Zanesville are so limited that, in a pinch, you have to make choices between the bad and the worse. That is what Mark Pi's has been for me-- the lesser of a variety of evils. Today, it moved to the evil side. The food is terrible-- salty, impossibly bland, few vegetables, disgusting canned mushrooms, hard crusty rice, raw rice noodles, excessive sauce... But, that is not bad enough. I knew what I was getting into with the low quality food, but I draw the line at filth and bad customer service. First of all, let me say that I am pretty sure they are breaking the law by putting glue traps in the bathroom! Not only is this dangerous, but it is a cruel pest removal method. Oh, yeah, not to mention the fact that it means THEY HAVE PESTS! Why?Filth is the answer. I suggest the Health Department pay this dump a visit. Furthermore, you do not charge customers for a meal they did not like. This is basic restaurant etiquette and smart business. Nor do you charge 50 cents extra for adding 3 bean sprouts to that crappy dish, especially when the customer did not give the ok to do so. If you are going to replace the meal I did not like, then you also need to charge me the right price for it. The second choice meal I ordered was quite a bit cheaper than the original one, but I got charged the original price. This is unacceptable. read more

I ordered crab Rangoon and sesame chicken this evening. It was the WORST I have ever tasted. It consisted of carrots that looked to have been frozen, half-cooked chicken, and No sauce whatsoever. Since this restaurant has changed hands, it has been awful. Tonight's meal ruined our dinner completely. read more

Mark Pi's China gate - Chinese Near Me - Zanesville, Ohio

This is the best Chinese restaurant in Zanesville, which isn't saying much because this city does not have any decent Chinese food. The staff members are friendly enough but the food just tastes bland and greasy. My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night and it looked busy. We ordered the China Gate Combo Platter as an appetizer, which includes a combination of egg rolls, butterfly shrimp, crab rangoon, scallop rumaki (scallops wrapped in bacon), skewered beef, and shrimp toast. It sounds like a lot but really it was just two pieces of each item. It came in a cute lazy Susan but that was the only thing good about it. Nothing "wowed" me and it seemed a little expensive ($11). Next I ordered the "house special pan-fried noodles" since it was listed under "Chef Specialties" on the menu. Basically the dish is pan-fried noodles, shrimp, chicken, pork, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots. It was probably the greasiest Chinese food I have ever had in my life. It was also flavorless, which was really disappointing. Next time my boyfriend has a craving for Chinese I will try to convince him to drive to Columbus. read more

I would give Mark Pi's China Gate ZERO stars if I could! I was so disappointed by our take out meal here that I almost cried; the menu descriptions make the food sound so good that I was highly anticipating fresh, crisp vegetables and delectable sauces. What I got, however, was canned mushrooms (completely inedible), more limp green peppers than tofu, gummy sauce, and a vegetable egg roll that had ground meat in it! I'm not sure if the latter was a mistake or if they always put meat in their vegetable egg roll, but it was disconcerting nonetheless. My husband did enjoy the spicy wontons, but in addition to the egg roll fiasco and the poor quality vegetables the Sechuan Tofu was not spicy at all and the vegetable lo mein had few veggies and no sauce whatsoever. You can call ahead and place an order and pick it up which is really nice. And the portions are generous at least in the tale out department. Ate at Mark Pi's this afternoon for the purpose of trying out a number of their dishes at their Sunday Buffet. We had eaten here a few days ago and decided to try more of their dishes before we decided to make this one of our regular dining spots. I rate the food as average. All of the dishes tasted the same. Nothing jumped out saying I'm special enough for you to come back and try me again. We travel to the Lai Lai Restaurant near Reynoldsburg for good Chinese food and was hoping we could save ourselves miles of travel by eating local. Sorry to say that didn't happen. The restaurant is clean, the staff very friendly, the prices very very fair, the service is great - but the food is only average. I would like to see them add some Schezwan items to spice things up. Will we go back? Probably, but only if we don't want to take the time to drive to Reynoldsburg. read more

Delicious! A family favorite! Our family has been going here for 15 years or more! It's the Chinese we crave because we can't get anything that tastes as good anywhere else(and we've lived in places all over the country) Anytime a member of the family is back for a visit we make a point to dine here! We all have our favorites. Mine is Gang Pang Beef. The sauce is spicy with fresh jalapeños and fresh green onions. The beef is crispy and tender. I went through this phase when I adored scallops and they customized this dish to include scallops. I also enjoy the Mark Pi's Chicken (customized to a medium spiciness) and War Su Gi. Part of what makes Mark Pi's so good is that each dish is made fresh to order and gets its own special sauce and ingredients (unlike many places that use one sauce base and one kind of vegetable). They also have real fresh Chinese mustard! Just make sure you specify your want it in your carry out or you'll get the packaged stuff. Take out is fast. Prices are very reasonable. Portions are average to generous. Wide selection of menu offerings. Some of the waitstaff has worked there as long as I can remember too. My family and I have been going to Mark Pi's for years, and even though I've moved, we continue to make a point to eat here. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants that I've been to that doesn't have the same-old frozen stuff they serve on buffets. The food tastes fresh and delicious! The egg rolls are great! Also, the staff is always very friendly and attentive. I'm shocked by all the negative reviews because if you've ever been to this place during lunch or dinner, you know seats are hard to come by. Best Asian food in Zanesville. Chef will accommodate special request such as sauce on the side, or hold the water chestnuts and add broccoli on almost any dish. Very good egg rolls, steamed dumplings and wonton soup. Very reasonable for lunch and dinner. Split lunch and dinner Hours are very confusing, which has caused them to loose business in the past. The food was greasy and it all tasted the same-- like old cooking oil. I ate very little of my meal. My egg roll contained something long and hard that was nothing I could identify.
