We came here because we were in Berryville for a wedding (about 35 minutes away). It was a Saturday so we definitely expected it to be busy. It was so busy, people were starting to park on the side of the main road on the grass just to avoid parking lot traffic and the fact there would be no parking left in the lot. For PYO, you pay before picking by choosing a small or large bag to fill up. Make sure you get your bag marked when you leave! The market is pretty big filled with baked goods and locally made jams and sauces; also fresh veggies and fruits! In the fall, don't forget to get freshly made apple cider and pumpkin donuts. Lines definitely form for those. It's a pretty big orchard which helps with it not feeling crowded. read more

They serve hamburgers, hotdogs, BBQ sandwiches, chicken, and ribs (among other things). Prices range from $3-11. You can also bring your own picnic and eat at the pavilion if you prefer. There is a large playground area with several sections that allow kids of all ages to enjoy themselves. The Apple orchard is well maintained and you can purchase apples by the basket in the market or you can purchase a bag and pick them yourself. This is an easy day trip from the DC area. read more

We go there for their pies. Love their PIES! First ended up here back in 2020 at the height of Covid. Stores were running out of toilet paper, rubbing alcohol and other cleaning supplies in the city. We decided to drive out in the boondocks and somehow found this place. We tried their apple pie and we were hooked. No other pie in the city can compare to theirs. Not too sweet and the crust is perfect! We also tried their apple crumb and french apple pies. Last month, we tried the egg custard pie. Hubby wasn't a big fan, but I loved it. They have a lot of other products like the apple cider donuts and donut holes - which are absolutely delish especially while they're hot. Oh, let's not forget their fruits and veggies. If you're in Virginia during the fall season, apple picking is one of the musts. The weather, the gorgeous views, leaves turning around you, and the fall atmosphere are just some of the enthralling aspects of apple picking. Marker-Miller Orchards is about an hour and half from D.C. and provides an array of PYO (pick your own) options from raspberries, apples, pumpkins, to squash depending on the season. Parking can get pretty crazy. They have an unpaved lot but it fills up quickly and by the 2-3pm, the only spots left are by the road. Aside from PYO, Marker-Miller has a market that offers an assortment of fruits, veggies, jams and jellies, cider, wines, and baked goods for sale. Fruits and veggies include but are not limited to apples, pears, squash, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and eggplant. Best of all, they sell apple cider donuts here. Naturally, the longest line is for apple cider donuts so there is a good 15-20 minute wait during the busy hours. Donuts are delicious. Seriously, the best part! They have a PYO stand where you can buy bags (1/2 peck, 1 peck, 1 bushel), but you can also check out the market to buy bags too. I wish they advertised this because I asked my BF to go buy the apple cider donuts in the market while I waited in the PYO line to buy bags, not knowing that we could have both just stood in the market line and gotten both. PYO stops half an hour before closing time. They don't allow any other bags, backpacks, or baskets into the PYO area. Only their bags/containers are allowed. After you finish picking, they have someone mark off your bag before you depart the grounds. Refer to their online fruit availability chart for when peaches, plums, and apples are available. When we went, there was Yatika Fuji, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Ida Red, Jonagold, Rome, Crispin, York, and Enterprise apples present. They provide a map of the PYO area but it's also well-marked. They have over 300 acres of apples so there's plenty of rows of apples to leaf through and pick. We went straight for the Fujis and the first row we came upon, we could have filled up our bag. The row stretches far beyond the eye can see too, so there are more than enough apples for everyone. The apples are good too; I rarely saw a rotten one. No ladders to help you reach the top branches though. Dogs are welcomed everywhere except inside the market. read more

My husband and I found this place on our way to Penn to visit kids 10 years ago and every time we are going for the visit we always stop here!!! In fact we plan our trip north for the end of August 1st of Sept just so we can get apples! Had my first Honey Crisp here and have been hooked ever since!!! They have a huge area for the kids to play, with multiple play sets.. nice area on top of the hill for parents to sit and watch the kids play (in rocking chairs). I love this orchard because they offer a wide variety of no sugar added pies from fruits grown at their orchard for those of us who want to eat healthier and without added sugar in our diets... I've tried their no sugar apple, peach, and berry and all are great! Their pie crust is excellent too, flaky and light like my Southern mother used to make! They of course make excellent regular pies as well. Worth the drive to stock up on fresh excellent homemade no sugar pie! I buy several and freeze them for later since the no sugar varieties you get at grocery stores are just horrendous and not worth eating. read more

The only reason I'm docking a star is for parking. There isn't much by way of parking control so if you come early (like we did) you may get blocked in (like we did). It would have been nice had they set up cones so they could keep exit lanes clear. We were able to get out with little hassle, it just took longer and we had to go a non sanctioned route. Okay- to the important things! Yes, it was super crowded at 1:30pm on a Sunday. But there was still plenty of fruit to be had. They give you a helpful map and off you go. Some of the cashiers are friendlier than others, but what can you do? I'd suggest coming early, grabbing a 12 pack of donuts, stashing those in the car and then heading back out to pick. You may not get any cider donuts if you wait. You can purchase your picking bags in the barn or at the stand at the entrance to the orchard. Pretty reasonable the bigger you go- $8/half peck, $11/full peck, $15/half bushel. A half bushel is a lot of apples. This is a must visit spot. read more

i was super impressed with marker-miller orchards. it is quite a hike from NoVa, 125 mins to be exact. it is well worth it. we thought we were getting there early but we pulled up to a full lot at 10:30 am! it only got more full as the day went on so i would recommend going earlier than later if possible. despite being full though, there were more than enough apples on the trees to go around. the orchard never felt crowded. bring good walking shoes because there is a lot of ground to cover. the orchard is very organized and they give you a map of what species are available to pick. there is a market with so many goodies but you HAVE to buy the warm apple cider donuts and stop in for an apple cider slushie. i am still thinking about it right now. yummmm. there is also a line for these but you can kill two birds with one stone by paying for your apple picking bag in there too instead of waiting in another line at the stand. the orchard is also very child and dog friendly too! read more

This has a great place for my grandson to play, while I watch from the porch in a rocking chair. The produce here is always good, and their ice cream is really good. I especially like their reduced table near the back. As long as you're going to cook the veggies right away, this table has some great veggie deals. The only thing I would change is the lawn mowing guy, he wails mow every Wednesday, but not wait until they are closed, so he would mow around my grandson on the playground, and no catcher for a thrown rock, etc. read more

While herds of people were lined up for their famous apple cider donuts and to pick your own apples, I was busy discovering a lesser known goodie, even better in my opinion. Lucky for you, I will let you in on it too.... Two words: Rum buns! Try one out from their bakery and you'll see what I mean. One time I stopped by and it must have been my lucky day- they just happened to have a huge Free pies, cakes, and baked good tasting. No catch to it, no marketing pitch either. Just table after table lined up with all kinds of sweet goodness to sample! They have a fully stocked bakery, fresh made ice cream and fudge, slushies, canned farm goods, produce, and extremely abundant local unique exotic flavored fruit wine selection (Peaks of Otter Winery) and much more. I can't wait for it to re-open again next season. As a heads up though, their parking lot and the lines can get rather insane on weekends, esp. holiday weekends. read more

And not all apples are alike. Some are tart whereas others are sweet. Some are crisp whereas others are soft. They are so many different textures and subtle nuances - I LOVE APPLES. Sadly, the orchards are closed during the winter season so you'll have to wait until this summer. When my friends and I ventured off for an apple picking adventure in November, I never expected to stumble across Apple Heaven. It's all about apples (and other local produce). The farm market is a huge warehouse of baked goods (e.g. breads, cakes, pies, and cookies ... all with apples), jams, jellies, dressings, wine, cider, and fruits and vegetables from nearby farms. Even if you're too lazy to pick your own apples from the trees, you can rummage through a wide selection indoors. You're charged by container size so load up anyway you can. My non-apple favorites include pumpkin butter and mango-peach salsa. Also, try the wine tasting. The farm market offers 30 different selections of wines from the Peaks of Otter Winery (Bedford, VA) including flavors like elderberry, peach, and hot pepper. For $2 a person, you can sample at least 21 different selections. Just make sure you're not the one driving home. 5 Stars - It may be a long drive from DC, but its certainly worth every minute. After coming to Marker-Miller, apples just aren't the same at my local grocery stores. How much longer until September? read more

I really enjoyed picking our own blackberries and the produce was very beautifullly displayed. The tomatoes were sweet and fresh as well as the peaches. Has a really nice play ground for the kids to stay entertained while you enjoy a delicious BBQ sandwich, apple or music. There is plenty to do. Not to forget the cute cow train that even adults can ride along with their kids which is donations and 2 dollar for the tractor hay ride that takes you for a tour of the farm.. Bring the kids! No, really - there's plenty for them to do here, from a playground to tours of the farm to pick your own apples at the orchard, so they can have a fun time. That being said, the market here is really interesting. They have their own food stand (a bit on the pricey side, but go fig) and they make a LOT of the stuff here locally, including apple cider slushies, fudge, and a ton of baking goods. Additionally, almost all of the stuff they have there comes locally - and by locally, I mean from the farm itself. Went for the Apple festival. Apples were delicious and varied. I think we picked about 6 or 7 juicy types of apples. That was good, but the lines for everything were absolutely ridiculous. I spent about a half hour in a line for the restroom and then there were the crazy lines for food and to buy the bags to pick apples in before you can start picking. We weren't even able to try the apple donuts because of those lines. I did appreciate that the orchard was dog friendly, but the festival itself it was pretty underwhelming and poorly run. This place is great. If you go on a weekend, expect a mad house like Chuck Cheese on a Saturday but the activities, food, and apples are well worth it. I have gone here once each of the last two years and this time I took the half day off work to go on a weekday. Worth every bit of it. The apples here are great but check their calendar to be sure your favorites are available or maybe be over picked. All apples are truly amazing and last a long time once picked. We usually get enough for two months (3 large bags stuffed). The pumpkins are over priced, the cider is wicked sweet, but the ice cream is beyond amazing (try the apple pie), and the donuts may not be hot but are really good (apple cider ones of course). My wife loves the banana bread and the syrups are top shelf. There is a great playground for the kids and more activities on the weekend (more vendors, hay rides, etc) if you are will to deal with your closet 500 friends. I love this place and highly recommend the Mon-Fri visit. Weekends are great if that is all you have available. And I balance all of this with the 100 mile drive each way! read more

This is one of my absolute favorite places in Winchester, it's just so....country, I love it. They have an adorable little porch with rocking chairs so you can sit outside and just enjoy the scenery, an awsome playground for kids (they have a little play area in the shape of a ship that I am DYING to climb in and go down the slide). The variety of salsas, jellies, jams and preserves are overwhelming, it's hard to pick out a couple. Right now I am working on a jar of Vidalia Onion Salsa, it is to die for. Also, the apple cider donuts are probably the best things I have ever eaten in my entire life. They have a little place out back that they open up and serve lunch on the weekends, they serve BBQ and chips and all kinds of goodies. Also, this place is the best place to go during the fall, last year I went around the second week in October and they were selling pumpkins, having hay rides, they had a little stand set up and were selling kettle corn and pork rinds, it is amazing, I just can't say enough about this place. We got here just in the nick of time as they were closing up shop at 4PM - thank goodness! I've heard a lot about their fresh apple cider donuts, so I was really excited to see that they still had some available. I got one as well as their fudge swirl from their fudge shop. The apple cider donut was delicious - it was more of like Dunkin Donuts consistency as it was more cake-like than airy. I'm not sure if I tasted the apple cider, but it was still good (cinnamon-ish). The lady who helped us was really nice and was really patient when I was deciding which fudge to get. There were also some products made by using produce grown on the orchards, so that was cool. The market itself was bigger than I thought, and they carried a variety of things. It seems as if it's a cool place to go apple-picking during the season as their orchards are huge! I'm not sure if I would trek back here again, but I am glad that I was able to try out their famous apple cider donuts! #174 First time gone apple picking. It was a lot of fun. $7 for a small bag of apples, $10 for a larger bag, and $15 for a massive bag. Just about all the apple orchards were ripe for picking, although slim pickings in the Fuji apples orchards. Did the wagon ride for $2 and was a bit disturbed to see a massive supply house with pesticides clearly labeled-- but I guess that's what they gotta use to keep the bugs away. Just remember to wash the apples carefully when you get back home. Try their apple donuts. They are delicious! read more

This is nestled between Apple Farms and seems like right at the foot hill of Blue Ridge. Pick Your Own Apple here at the farm and great place for kids to play too. This can be a destination, depending on your purposes. There are fun things for kids to do. They also have pick-your-own seasonally. They have hot apple cider donuts, home-made fudge, and ice cream. Virtually all the jams and relishes are their OWN brand, not someone else's so that tells me something. The store is laid out nicely and has plenty of room. It can be a bit crowded on weekends, but we stopped by yesterday (Wednesday) and there was a small busload of seniors from a nearby nursing home enjoying themselves on the porch. We have been here a number of times, and it really is on a short list of farm markets. It's a bit of a stretch for us (~30 miles) to be a regular customer when we have two other excellent farm markets nearby in Martinsburg, WV (Orr's and Butler's). read more

Had a great time here over the weekend with my mom, however I would have enjoyed apple picking more if her friends weren't so quick to fill up our bag (not a reflection of the orchards though!). It's really beautiful here and you have lovely mountain views. It's a perfect fall activity about an hour away from DC and you can get a whole half bushel bag of apples for about 12 bucks. Can't beat that! They also have lots of activities for the kids - a big playground area, wagon rides, "cow train" and pumpkin patch. I thought it was a little weird they had a cop on staff, but it seemed to make a lot of sense when mom's friends decided they wanted to "reuse" their paid bags for another batch of apples (sigh). The only thing I didn't really like was that some items were expensive. Apple bread was $7 or $8 and a gallon of apple cider was $7.50. They also didn't have very much apple bread available to sell. You'd think that there would be plenty at an apple orchard as well as be a little cheaper out there. read more
