The Price Chopper is a really good grocery store on the O'Neill highway. When I lived in Dunmore this was my go-to grocery store and I was very pleased to have it. It's large, usually has a nice selection of goods, a decent bakery, a good produce section, nice prepared foods, reasonable price...all good things. If this...and make sure you are shopping at the correct Price Chopper, the BIG Chopper right off of 81, not the tiny, terrible, cramped Ghetto Chopper on Monroe Ave...if this Price Chopper has a problem, its biggest problem is its proximity to the superlatively wonderful Wegmans. If I'm driving across town for groceries I'll drive the extra 5 minutes for Wegmans...not a knock at all against the Big Chop, but Wegmans is simply better. read more

I was actually quite taken back with the limited selection of things this location offers as opposed to the much smaller market in my hometown 15 miles away. I had stopped in to get some special items to take back to my east coast friend living in Colorado. Their prices seem way out of line for the items I picked up. Others I waited on and did find other places MUCH cheaper. It's unfortunate when a store appears to price items higher because there is really nothing else close by. It's got a big parking lot and way too many lights to blind you inside. read more

I've been shopping at this Price Chopper since the day it opened. I hate it. I only shop here because it's less than a mile from my house. They don't always have everything I need and the prices are a little high considering the name of the store. I'm in the store at least once a week and I usually buy the same things, but they move everything around so often it is hard to find things. The layout is horrible. The general merchandise/OTC medication/first aid/eye care is all crammed in really narrow aisles and the frozen food aisle is nearly 20 feet wide. So in the area with the stuff that comes in small boxes and bottles, the stuff you really have to look to find the one you want, there is a traffic jam of Jazzys with old people trying to get to the Preparation H and denture cream. And the frozen food aisle looks deserted. A friend challenged me to do some comparison shopping, he was convinced that Wegmans would beat Price Chopper on price. I didn't believe him and said that the difference would be minimal and it would be a wash due to the cost of gas. Here it comes, Colin P, on the Internet for everyone to see.....I was WRONG and you were RIGHT. I bought my normal stuff. Bread, eggs, meat, toiletries etc... The price difference was astonishing. Wegmans beat PC on prices by a mile. I hate Price Chopper, I hate myself for shopping there but it's just too close to home. I can't argue against some of the other reviews on here. But, I wouldn't be as harsh with my assessment of this place. In general, I have found this place to be cheaper than wegman's. BUT, the main reason I go to this place is for their bakery - artisan breads - to be specific. I don't live in the area anymore. But, do stop by every once in a while to visit family. And, I make it a point to drop by the place to pick up some sort of specialty breads they have there. The staff could be a bit more friendlier at times. read more

The selection is fine and it being open 24 hours is a plus. The major downfall is the employees. We've tried to pay by splitting payment three times and each time the employee said it was not an issue... Once we run one card, they say, "Oops" and charge everything to one debit card. It is starting to get pretty annoying, just might have to start carrying that stuff they call cash again when we come here. read more

I received the following hilarious/defensive message from someone who is apparently a Price Chopper employee/aficionado and disagrees with my review: "I think Wegmans prices are higher - in general. Sure, you can pick a specific item and find it cheaper at Wegmans but I can pick a different specific item with a lower price @ PC. It's the overall price of the entire order that counts. I'm sure that you were @ the bakery at an odd time. The bakery is fully staffed during the day. Even when I go around 5-6 there is always bakery staff present, (white coat and hat and everything,) not to mention a line of customers. The entire store is undergoing a renovation with an expanded organic section, but this is Scranton and people just don't buy that much organic food. Finally, yes, there are four different banks, but they do charge a fee if you aren't their customer, and there is a surcharge-free ATM at Sheetz, so if you don't wanna pay the buck... THEN JUST GO TO SHEETZ! They're open 24-7 too." It is pure irony that a store called "Price Chopper" charges for something that nobody else does. I updated my original review to note the time I was at the bakery. As far as Scranton's population not buying much organic food... it flies off the shelves at Wegmans. Given the choice, I would rather consume fewer chemicals. Evidently Price Chopper shoppers simply don't care. Also, Price Chopper employees don't seem to care either. On a recent visit for a few things, the cashier loudly exclaimed to another employee that she couldn't wait to "get the hell out of" there as she scanned my items. Classy. Thankfully there is a self checkout. As noted in the crazy message I received, this store has undergone a renovation. The layout hasn't improved, but it does feel a bit cleaner. Prices haven't changed - it's still the Price Gouger. Quick, basic example: $3.99 will get you a 24-pack of on-sale water at Price Chopper. $3.99 will get you a 35-pack of regular price water at Wegmans. read more

I had another terrible shopping experience . This is coupled with the employees who seem to have nothing to do as far as assisting the customer . I bought a package of their hand trimmed chicken breasts, and let's be honest they are anything but hand trimmed. I opened up my recent purchase to the usual fat, grizzle, tendons, and bone particles that have not been removed. I then was overwhelmed with a rancid odor, and only to find one of the chicken breasts was in such a revolting state of discoloration that I threw the entire package in the trash . Not the first time, but definitely the last time I buy any price chopper brand meat. Don't be impressed by the store in butchers, because they do everything possible to avoid assisting customers. The butchers totally ignore any customer, unless you literally ask for service. The front end check out is another wonderful experience. I have had to bag my own groceries, while the cashier and two other employees stood there and observed , but I am sure the conversation about their weekend held presidence over the five other customers behind me at this last and final check out. This store is the worst, in fact all price choppers are horrible. I guess I'm partial because I regularly shop at wegmans. I grew up in NY next to a wegmans and a price chopper and when i moved to Scranton, the nightmare of price chopper followed me. I only stop for a couple things because it's on my way home. There is literally 16 shoppers in here right now and this place can't handle it. 4 people out front smoking but only one behind the hot foods counter. All I wanted was dam chicken tenders and they are all out and "need to make more" well it's 5:30 on a weeknight. Plan and prepare. Total Mismanagement. Everyone is flustered and seems be in a rush and can't handle anything, again not the associates fault, total mismanagement again. Learn from wegmans. Oh, and open some more registers. Base it on volume, and when it slows down, take the associate and delegate work elsewhere. Something can always be cleaned or someone can always be helped or trained. read more

The people that work in the meat department must be earning minimum wage as they definitely are not meat cutters just clerks . Last week a meat clerk tried to tell me that a smoked ham was ready to eat , I said only if it say's ' fully cooked '. He said I didn't know anything about meat and walked off . I hope that he took it to heart about what i said , otherwise they'll be some sick customers and wont know why. read more
