Stopped into Fat Butcher in Lawrenceville expecting just to grab some meat for the week, and ended…read moreup walking out with lunch too because everything looked too good to pass up! It's a proper neighborhood butcher shop on Butler Street, the kind of place that had mostly disappeared around here. They do whole animal butchery with meat sourced from local Pennsylvania farms, and you can feel how much the folks working there care about what they're doing. It's not a huge space, just a display case full of cuts, a wall of house made goods, and a small sandwich menu, but that's part of the charm. The staff were friendly and happy to point me in the right direction. The sandwiches are what really got me though. The smash burger is fantastic, a double patty on a challah bun with that special sauce, and you can actually taste the quality of the beef, which makes sense given the whole operation is built around good meat. I also grabbed some of their house made pastrami, and it did not disappoint, tender and full of flavor. Knowing everything is made in house, right down to the bacon and sausages, makes it even better. If you live nearby and don't have a butcher yet, this is the one.

Love the decor in the shop. There were many prepared food options in the fridge, as well as various cuts of meat/preparations of it. We got two sandwiches, the cheesesteak and the marbella. I dont think we ended up with the correct order because we didn't end up with a cheesesteak, but did not realize until we got home. I'm positive that if I went back to the shop they would've remedied the situation, but I didn't feel it was necessary! The sandwich we did end up with was good as well, unsure which one it was though. Very fair prices, and our dog was so happy we brought him home a bone as well! Looking forward to coming back and trying everything they have to offer.

Who knew you could get things like camel, emu, kangaroo, ostrich, python and many other exotic meats right here in Pittsburgh! They even have them in a variety of options like steaks, patties and ground. They also have a nice selection of jerkeys. I have yet to try any of the more unusual meats, but I've purchased beef and chicken products from them. The quality was high and the items were very tasty when prepared. Service was wonderful. We were greeted promptly even though their was a line and the staff moved efficiently while still taking the time each customer needed. Prices are higher than you would pay at a store like Giant Eagle, but the slightly higher prices are absolutely worth it.

I came in for jerky as a friend recommended, and the staff helped me choose some popular options. Apparently the hot one is the coffee beef jerky. I also grabbed some pepper buffalo, and pepper teriyaki beef. Flavor-wise, this stuff is packed with it, so thumbs up there. This is probably personal preference, but my gripe is that the thinner pieces are so tough it takes forever to chew. It's fatiguing! I guess I'm used to thicker, softer jerky. One other knock is that this place smelled...bad inside. Seems like product quality is fine since it's so popular and well-regarded, but I'd recommend addressing the smell. Maybe that's just what happens after decades or storing and selling meat in an enclosed space?
