The Marlin Club seems like the local dive bar of the island. While the atmosphere and all the crazy decorations are cool, it never really stood out to me as having much character in itself. The bartender was nice, and I don't think you'll be disappointed if a dive bar is what you're looking for, but it was just nothing extraordinary either. A true dive...in the best sense of course. Not even the best sea legs are a match for a long night at the Marlin Club. Stiff drinks are why you come, as well as the crowd which can include salty dogs, boatniks, local winos, fresh faced tourists and an occasional yachtsman. I think the Marlin was my favorite bar in Avalon. Granted, there aren't really THAT many places to go late at night, but the Marlin Club was definitely a spot I'd go to again and again. Got atmosphere, pool tables, arcade games, cheap drinks. Also not so loud that you can't talk to your friends as you proceed to get hammered from the heavy pour cocktails here. read more

This is a great bar. Most nights I've spent on this island have ended up at this bar. It's an unapologetically quintessential dive bar. They serve the best drink on the island drinks and a have a bathroom and a pool table. The end! The service is good but it seems like they can get a little swamped at times, though they manage well. There is no food here, by the way. read more

This place is AH-Mazing. I was in Catalina for a weekend birthday trip in August and came here for some cocktails on the reccomendation of a friend. Thank God b/c it was a memorable place. The bartenders are super nice and remembered my name when we went in the second day. the drinks are strong but best of all is the crowd. There was a little bit of everything when we were there - from the old drunk locals to younger locals barely able to stand to a bride after her wedding and a pub crawl. One of the bars that we frequented while on Catalina. This place is pretty much just your basic bar. They have a pol table which is good, and they are running this sea theme. They have a small cooler that they keep nice beer in which was nice for me since I like good beer. Best way I can say it is that the locals hang out here and if that's the case you know it's pretty good. read more

We we're pretty impressed with this little while in the wall bar. It was recommended to us by some friends and honestly at first I didn't think I would enjoy it. But we had a great time. There a live band which played some classic rock. To our surprise they were pretty good. I don't recall the name of the band but it seems like they are there all the time. Super friendly staff, and the locals were awesome as well. They don't serve food here, but you are welcome to bring your own. I wish we could of stayed longer but I wasn't feeling good so we left early. If you want cheap drinks and hear good music, this is the place to go. read more

We went during the day and their were bikers and a few people around the bar. They had discovery channel on. I was hoping for any sports but oh well. Just went to play one game of pool and we were out. Didn't feel like playing the jukebox but pool is one dollar. I miss 50 cent games. Maybe at night it is more happening. We stopped by for a Bloody Mary because we didn't want to wait in an hour long line for breakfast down the street. We ended up staying for at least two hours because we were having so much fun with Brian and all the guests! We skipped breakfast and had lunch later, well worth it! We bought sulvieneers for us and friends! We had a blast! We played the wobble ball game and I did it on my first try! Free shots! Woohoo! We can't wait to go back. Great people and fun in there! Catalina doesn't have that many bars or places to go after hours because they already have a great place for that--the Marlin Club! Truly amazing atmosphere where tourists and locals go to have a great time. Drinks are well made, and the bartenders are great. Some have tricks off their sleeves. Don't be afraid to ask the bartenders to surprise you with a drink--they can get creative and you can end up having an amazing drink! Perhaps one of my favorite bars both on the island in California. Shout out to Brian and the owners! Tips: -order the Buffalo Milk (do it!) -if you are going Friday nights, try to get there an hour early before the band starts to find a good spot on the bar -have a positive attitude -tell the bartenders to surprise you for at least one drink read more

Best place we found in Avalon for a cheap brew and local-watching. A friendly, fun vibe for a dive - Marlin Club doesn't have that shabby, scared-to-touch-the-tables feeling. We were there on a Saturday and met some younger guys in the middle of a sailing race, a cougar or two trying to pounce (aka taking selfies and providing tequila shots), a local divemaster and dive instructor who filled us in on the best times/spots around the island, and too many 40-year old dudes in Hawaiian print shirts to count. My favorite waterfront dive in Avalon. About a block off of Crescent Ave., the main drag, the Marlin Club has been around since 1946. I like it because it is less touristy than most watering holes in Avalon. No food, just booze and atmosphere. read more

We love dive bars! They are usually our favorite. But this one, unless you are a local they don't give a crap about you. I get it, I live in a small touristy town and it's easy to get "over it". But as I know, you can't usually survive in small touristy towns without tourists. We are still paying patrons. Usually I want to hang out forever and my husband has to drag me out. This time I was ready after a drink. We went a few times and in my opinion, a few times to many. We wanted to love it. We didn't. Strong drinks though so you could always get drunk and just be less concerned as they are. read more

Brian was a really entertaining bartender! He made the time we were there fun and full of laughter. My friend ordered two drinks and two shots! One of the drinks he recommended was the Alabama Slammer, which was extremely good! It wasn't overwhelming at all! My friend got the blue Hawaiian, which tasted similar to an Adios. Marlin Club was a great time. I visit Avalon once a year and always make a point in stopping by this place. Fun for groups since it has pool and foosball. The prices are very reasonable and it has some great music. Be sure to stop by and say hi to Brian. He sells Sharkoozies for $5 a pop. Really cool designs and well worth the stop. read more
