Ben Krist is absolutely amazing at what he does. I came in with an idea of what I wanted, honestly expecting just a consultation but he said oh no, I'm ready to go let's do this! I told him the exact flowers I wanted and he could do the rest. It took him about 45 minutes of tattooing to get this done! Not only was he quick, it looks amazing! It's exactly what I wanted but even better. I highly recommend Ben at Marlowe Ink and I WILL be returning for more of his work. Absolute genius and so good at what he does. I discovered this place via instagram. I saw a post from Colcannontattoos and saw she was finishing her tattoo apprenticeship and her works online were cool so I decided to book! We scheduled an initial meeting via zoom and talked about the design I had in mind. We went back and forth on email a bit and came to a picture I liked the most. The day of my appointment she had prepared a couple different sizes and orientations to choose from and gave good insight about which way to face it. Things I had never thought of and I'm so glad I was able to hear her two cents about placement. All in all the experience was great! I am about 3/4 of the way done with a large piece that Phil created for me and I could not be any happier with the results so far! I have been holding off on this review since I'm not technically done yet, but since Marlowe Ink is looking at expanding to Old Town Alexandria I figure now is as good of time as any to get my thoughts out there. First of all, it's a really nice space. It's located in the heart of Fairfax City, across the street from what used to be TT's (dating myself a little with that one, I know), next to Bellisimo, just up a steep staircase and through the magical door on the right. Once you reach it, the waiting room is vibrant and colorful and there is plenty to occupy yourself if you find yourself waiting for someone. Second, and most importantly, they have some really great talent! I picked Phil for my piece since his flowers are some of the best I have ever seen, but I would be comfortable being tattooed by any of their very talented artists. Each artist has their own preferred style, so I would suggest checking out their portfolios (either online or in person) and booking with whom you feel suits you best. Also fairly important, I think the entire process has been simple and straight forward so far. I have found interacting with Kim at the desk to be pleasant and professional; she's actually been really helpful to me when booking appointments or at answering my random questions. Plus the overall vibe of the shop is everyone seems to like each other and are interested in what each other is doing. I have about ten hours under my belt now on this project and feel very comfortable at Marlowe Ink. Sadly, you can't always say that about a tattoo shop, but walking in the door here I always know I will be pleased with the results and my interactions with their staff. Lastly, and I would be remiss for not mentioning this, I have to give props to Rob their piercer. I actually followed him here from another shop (yeah he's that awesome) and he's pretty much the reason I finally found an artist I could entrust with what I am working on. A+ all around. Been working with Anya for years on my dog tattoos. And This is my 3rd time at Marlowe Ink (was tattooed by another artist in 2009). From 2009 until now things have changed a bit visually but the customer service has always been on point. This year I finally got around to scheduling my session with Anya for my youngest baby @MargaritaTheCleftie (FB and IG). But Covid had other plans for all of us. Throughout the shut down, Kim (manager) reached out to me via the telephone with updates. To me, that meant a lot cause it shows she wanted to personally make sure I was up to date with what was happening at the shop and was ready to answer any questions at that moment. Two weeks ago I got a phone call from Kim stating that they were ready to see me at the shop and I scheduled my appointment for today. I showed up 5min before my appointment and was created at the door as it's locked for Covid safety reasons. They provide hand sanitizer and cups to put clean and used pens in. Everyone in the shop had a mask on as well. The entire spot was clean! Once everything was filled out, Anya was ready to put her skills to work. When she placed the stencil on me, it was game time. We had a great convo and she made sure to check on me every so often to ensure I was doing ok. I laid there like a log for her so I guess she wanted to make sure I was still alive. lol. When she was finished, I was left speechless. I'm a grown man and I'll say this with no care in the world. I cried when I saw the finished product. There's a long story/history with Margarita and her ties to my grandmother who passed away in 2017. All my dogs are special to me, but she's different. With that said, trust Marlowe Ink and put all your trust in Anya, especially with pet portraits. Everyone there is a pleasure to work with. I'm attaching the pictures of my dog's tattoos. I have been coming to Marlowe Ink for 10 years now. I typically see James Marlowe but recently saw Corey Taylor for my finger tattoo. I have nothing to say but positive things about this business. They are so incredibly friendly and welcoming from the moment you step in. I have have Jaq (I am not going to attempt to spell her name and butcher it. She's a piercer.) Change out my tragus piercing and she didn't even charge. Every time I get tattooed here I feel comfortable and they do an amazing job of keeping up conversation so it's not just odd and awkward laying/sitting there. I recommend them to everyone. The remodel that they have done is also amazing. Do not park in the small lot near the shop or else you will get towed (thankfully this has never happened to me before however there is a free parking lot at the top of the hill (gravel not pavement) and it's a one block walk over. Ample parking there! I've been seeing Misti Kilgore's work on Facebook recently and Instagram and it is absolutely everything that I love. Warning: lengthy and gushy review ahead. Marl{owe}? More like Marl{oh-em-gee}! This place is AMAZING. There is no other way to put it. I kind of stumbled upon Marlowe to get my nose pierced one weekend in a fit of impulsiveness, and immediately felt at ease - Rob was so quick and did an utterly perfect job! - and I knew that I would be comfortable getting inked here (for the first time) as well. Little did I know how much more I was going to love it once I met my tattoo artist! (Also, I am kind of obsessed with the smell of this place - it is incredibly immaculate, for one thing! Smells - and looks and feels - very, very clean. Take this from the most OCD person on the planet). One of the front desk ladies booked me with Hayden for a consultation a few days later (post piercing), and everything went as smooth as could be expected. First things first: Hayden is without a doubt the cutest, funniest, and most down-to-earth (and easy to talk to) gal I think I have ever met! I was so nervous bringing in my design (because I wanted it to be perfect and also didn't know what to expect, having never sat down with a tattoo artist before) - and nervous about the process - and she made it a total BREEZE. She is just an absolute doll; don't take my word for it, go see for yourself! Hayden was able to squeeze me in the day after my consultation, since she had had a cancellation, which was perfect. The actual appointment went SO well: she talked me through everything, and kept me distracted while she was inking. She was so quick and yet also so thorough; why can't the rest of our adult lives run as smoothly?! Riddle me that. The tattoo itself brings tears to my eyes every time I look at it - it is in memory of 2 of my favorite people - both whom I lost this year: my grandpa and my college best friend. Hayden took my design and brought it to life; in the process, she also assuaged my fears (mainly about perceived pain - it was no worse than getting blood drawn at the doctor's) and made it the most seamless and wonderful experience. I will absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, turn to Hayden and Marlowe Ink should I decide to get another tattoo (which, I will admit, is probably inevitable!) In conclusion, I cannot recommend Marlowe Ink (and Hayden Abernathy) enough! They are professional, thorough, clean (fastidious even!); from what I can deduce, one of the BETTER and more sought-after tattoo/piercing establishments in the area. My husband and I absolutely love Anya G. as our tattoo artist! For me she created a piece by Audrey Kawasaki on my arm (perfect shading and colors that is pretty stunning!), and for my husband, she's currently constructing and designing an original Anya sleeve design of a tiger, dragon, with more to come! Anya is a prodigy as her colors are deep, artistic, and this lady works super fast and so detailed-oriented that we are amaze of her skills! For my piece, which is about 5-6 inches long and 4-5 inces wide, she was able to finish the entire Kawasaki girl in 3 hours! The shading and color today is still vibrant (had her tattoo done in 2014) AND her line work is on point! The outline and all lining in my girl is so straight you would think someone printed the portrait on my arm instead of someone etching and filling in the tattoo. Anya is quick, fun, and has so much personality. I would def. recommend her over and over to everyone who wants a great tattoo and art experience that will last for a life time. I'll start by saying I did not get a tattoo, though, I attempted to get a tattoo by Danny. I first came to Marlow due to the reviews, with friends and what I ended up finding was an unprofessional artist who refused to acknowledge that he may have made a mistake. I requested two drawings for two different tattoos that I wanted completed. One was valued at 500 another 300. Danny offered to draw them up add color and then email me the drawings in the event I wanted to tweak it. He even went as far as to say be proactive and email me (which I did) and he'd get started immediately. Otherwise, an additional admission, he'd probably forget. Well, I emailed and called multiple times and received no response from Danny until the day before my tattoo. This was only after I phoned the shop three times. After reaching Danny, he claimed to not have agreed to draw and transmit the tattoo via email. Said, he would never agree to such a thing. Eventually, he admitted if he had ever agreed to it he was truly sorry that this week he was slammed but typically he never agrees to such a request. I had visited the shop a month in advance with friends who also heard Danny agree to such terms. At this point, we all make mistakes, however I had been proactive I had contacted him multiple times. Therefore I requested based on the possibility of miscommunication and my multiple attempts of contact that my tattoo appointment be changed and my deposit not forfeited. He ultimately refused citing shop policy. Therefore, I decided it was best that I take my business elsewhere. The shop itself is nice, well lit and has great artwork. I would have liked to have seen a more cleanlier environment, it wasn't what I was used to. Danny also didn't even shave the arm hair off my friend who got a tattoo. read more

This place is freaking awesome, heard so many things about the artists here and finally got the chance to go with a friend who had scheduled a consult. Danny genuinely took interest in the design I wanted, I wanted Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy VII. He is such a contrast from my already bright sleeve, but so far, Danny has been working wonders with Vincent's cape, it looks so dope! With anime/video game tattoos, you seriously have to find artists who know a great deal about linework and coloring, and about the genre in general. They have to be fans of it, which Danny is, which also put my mind at ease. The environment is great, clean, awesome to look around at all the artwork on the wall. The banter between artist is hilarious, music choice is great as well (watch out for the laugh track they like to play lol) Definitely reccomend this shop to anyone looking for great artwork for great deals! read more

Disclaimer - I do not post negative reviews (or even positive reviews/reviews ever) and I respect art and artists and I thought really hard about this and don't take this lightly. In 2018, I connected with Anya to get a tattoo done. She is an incredibly talented artist and a popular artist who can have her book filled for months and months at a time. I sent her a handwritten note asking for consideration next time her book opened up and I was ecstatic when she reached out and made time for me sooner than expected. The work she did was beautiful and I was thrilled. I thought the appointment was fine - it wasn't my first tattoo and although there were some tender spots, it went well and I tipped well. Around October 2019 I reached out to get my piece added on to. I was told that the people who got tattooed previously get preferential treatment for follow up work. Her book was full and I was told by someone at the front her book would open early 2020. I continued to check in, probably calling three times total to see if there were updates on when her book would open and there weren't many. All communications after the original appt w Anya were with the front desk at Marlowe. I knew her book was getting close to opening so I sent an expensive and pretty awesome necklace made of motor cycle parts (Anya likes to ride) to send as a thank you for the work and a thank you in advance for consideration on adding on to my piece. I didn't ever hear anything and I realized this morning that she blocked me on Instagram??? I know this seems petty but I just can't tell you how much it rubs me the wrong away. It's terrible business to treat someone who has been such an advocate for your business like this. I have respected her wishes on no DMs , I have not been obnoxious, I have been complimentary to her and about her to everyone I've ever talked to about the work. Tattoo artists can be a narcissitic and cold breed of people and I never got great vibes from the woman who runs the shop and I am confused and pissed and disappointed and they now fall into that category in my mind. This culture and treatment of clients and raving fans is unacceptable. Over the past year, I've probably sent 25 people your way. You have lost an advocate and I will not forget how I've been treated (for no apparent reason???) the next time someone asks me about who did my tattoo. Not good. read more

I had my tattoo done with Danny, and he was great! Honestly I would come back here for my next tattoo, he was super informative on how to take care of the tattoo afterwards, and very friendly and relaxing during my tattooing. The prices here are very reasonable as well, I was quoted about $350 or so for my tattoo, based on the time he guessed it would take, but it took less time, so it ended up being about $250. Even still with the $350 price, I would have accepted it. He does phenomenal work! read more

Slobs. Went for a black ink full back piece based on an old woodcut illustration. I can barely imagine why they didn't appreciate the opportunity to do a huge piece, they said they appreciated it but they did not. In the second session the tattooer messed up, shaded the wrong regions, added square feet of scratchy nonsense. During the session the tattooer mentioned they were sick and tried to bum antibiotics from another person there, glad they didn't turn into patient zero and infect me, but it kind of explains the shoddy work. After healing I emailed asking for an explanation of the sloppy and nonsensical portions, got no reply. Sent another email asking if I'd get a reply or would need to find a replacement tattooer, got nothing. Called, got no explanation, then I got an email with just nonsense to trust the tattooer or go to someone else. The desk person was rude when I called to cancel my next appointments. Finally I emailed to make sure what type of ink was used. On the initial consult I asked what ink would be used so I could make sure I'm OK with it for health and safety reasons, and was told Intenze would be used. When I emailed after the fact I was told Dynamic had been used, without notifying me. So they basically switched to an ink that's apparently not vegan and that I hadn't checked out for health concerns. Reckless and unethical. I've got a picture here, it's Marlowe Ink's idea of imitating a woodcut. They might reply saying it wasn't finished, but that would be BS, I was told the area was complete for the most part and I gave them an opportunity to explain and they didn't. I got my deposit on the next appointment back but they were rude about that and probably glad to be rid of a job that they'd decided for whatever reason not to take seriously and then had botched. read more

I had a great experience at Marlowe Ink last week with Hayden. First off, the staff are friendly when you call and give you all the information you need. The artists book several weeks out, but they tipped me off that they have walk ins on Saturdays and told me Hayden's next Saturday walk in date. Upon arrival, the place was very clean and staff were very friendly and efficient with check in. Hayden did a great job drawing my tattoo stencil and I never felt rushed during the process. She wanted to make sure she got it right. It was my first tattoo and I felt very at ease. Hayden took plenty of time to explain after care instructions and answer questions. She even sent me off with a bag of extra bandages to wear at night since my cats sometimes walk on me when I'm sleeping. I can't recommend Hayden and this shop enough. Hmm, there is this new "write another review" link, let's give it a try? Marlowe has changed significantly since I wrote about it a few years ago. I have been back several times since then, and I finally convinced a friend with a troublesome nose piercing to come with me; she was given good advice. I had a piercing done by Jackie; I had done one side myself and she gave me a thumbs-up but I had her do the other side anyway! She was great and made me feel comfortable. I haven't used the tattoo services at Marlowe at all, the one time I've had an "impulse" tattoo urge they were busy! Haven't gotten another tattoo since, but I will give them a try. By the way, the shop is MUCH nicer now. It's more than just a desk and a display case - well, it's still a counter and a display case, but it's really nice. And of course there is no smoking now! I think they learned how powerful Yelp is. If the jewelry selection was bigger I would have given them five stars...maybe now they'll add more! ;) So let's see, I don't know if my original review will still be available after I submit this. WOW!!! My husband got work done today by Corey Taylor here @ Marlowe. He did stellar line work and outlining of a large piece coming over his right shoulder. It's killer and bad a*s!! In a few months he will get it shaded/colored in. I myself have gotten 6 tattoos by him and let me just say "He's the best, a truly gifted Artist and a must try!" In addition the shop Marlowe was extremely clean, air conditioned, no parking issues and had a gnarly vibe. Def go to Marlowe if you live in/or visit NOVA, DC, MD. I tried to keep this short and didn't do a very good job. My first impression after hunting for parking and climbing the very steep stairs (if you're in a wheelchair, stop reading here and find a different shop) was that the shop was pretty nicely decorated with a stereo system playing Clutch. I liked the atmosphere. I really wanted to like this place. They pretty quickly undid that. Someone ahead of me had come in for an estimate and was told that her art would have to be modified to work as a tattoo - and that's fine, I understand that. She left, probably so they could rework their art, but the staff proceeded to verbally trash that customer after they left. Everyone in every business talks shit about their customers, but for christ's sake, do it somewhere that I can't hear you. Had a piece done by Misty last summer. She barely gave me a chance to look at the artwork before starting. Fine, I trust her, she's a professional, I told myself. I shouldn't have let her rush me. My experience, though, was a different story. Maybe 45 minutes into what I think was a three hour session (I really don't recall), one of Misty's friends who said he'd just gotten out of prison or something wandered in. They talked for about an hour, during which time Misty kept working. What am I, chopped liver? You're not doing me a favor, I'm paying you a significant amount of money for your undivided attention. You didn't see the guy for a couple years, you can wait another hour. We did chat about tattoos a little bit, which was pleasant until she mentioned that she really doesn't like text tattoos. Really? I have two text tattoos, and I know she saw them. So she finished up, her friend crawled back into whatever hole he came out of, she bandaged me up, and I left. To her credit, Misty went over the aftercare instructions pretty thoroughly. Got home, looked at it, wasn't entirely happy with the shading. It's an entirely black and white piece with very simple geometric shapes, and it wasn't filled in enough for my liking in some spots. But hey, at least it healed right! So I made the mistake of going back to Misty to finish it! She seemed offended that I wanted her to modify it, but cash talks. $100 and half an hour later, she's filled in about half of what I wanted, and the other half she refused. She explained it in terms of shape of tattoo vs shape of arm, which I accepted as truth for a while. I had another piece done recently at the shop that did my text tattoos Misty hates. I showed my artist what Misty did, and he didn't seem particularly surprised to hear how it went down. Dude finished it how I wanted and treated me the respect I paid him to. So after all that, a fairly simple piece that I expected to have finished in a single session for $300 ended up costing me $500 across three sessions. Unprofessional, impolite, disrespectful. I'd sooner do my own with a dried-out Sharpie and a thumbtack than go back. EDIT: Received a message from James Marlowe apologizing for my experience. That simple gesture alone smooths out a good deal of ill feelings toward the shop, and I plan to see a different artist here and post another review once I have another idea worth committing to skin. read more

I was a loyal customer for over two years and had 5 microdermals put in by Danny. (I've had many other piercings done by another person there who has always treated me well.) I recommended the place to everyone who asked about the piercing. Further, my commute to Marlowe Ink from DC takes 2.5 hours each on the Metro. That's how loyal I was. But you couldn't pay me money to go back there now (despite there being one talented piercer that I'll regret not revisting). I had never been so publically insulted and disrespected. The receptionist was horrible. And shame on Danny for so blatantly lying to me to my face and refusing to honor his agreement to replace the piercing that he put in incorrectly. This place is a mess. I forgot to get the names of the two people that were up front helping everyone through out the chaos, but they were really patient and kind to everyone. About 4 months ago I started thinking about getting a new tattoo to cover up some old ones on my back that are about 12 years old. I started looking online at artists' portfolios and talking to friends who have ink . Since I knew the new piece would need to be pretty big and was covering up older ink, I didn't want to just wander in anywhere. When I found out 5 separate people I knew had gotten large pieces done at Marlowe Ink, I decided to contact James for a consult. I met with him twice to work out the design and was pleased both with the final design and with the collaborative nature of the process. I'm now about 2/3 though with completing the piece and have been thrilled with the whole experience. * The shop is clean, and though they've been undergoing renovations, that hasn't affected my experience at all. Free parking is available in a lot a block up the road, so pretty convenient. * Pricing was fair and what I expected (actually will end up less because the work is moving faster than we originally thought it would) * The staff that I've had interactions with have been friendly and professional * James has done an awesome job - the design is gorgeous, the tattoo looks clean and nice, and he has a good 'bedside' manner, friendly and easy to talk to (with good music playing). Matt is awesome. I've been to Marlowe Ink one other time for a tattoo, but yesterday was my first time with Matt. At first I was a little nervous, it took a while for him to actually get started. But once he did, he seriously took his time and made sure it was perfect. He even offered to touch up another tattoo I have just because he had everything set up. I have been nothing but impressed by the staff and the shop itself. The shop is well-organized, well-managed, and clean. There is a large inviting waiting area for before you move back to your artist's room. Anya Gladin has been my go-to tattoo artist for the last 4 years. While she was at another area shop, she completed a back piece. At Marlowe, she has done a small tattoo and is currently finishing a half sleeve for me. I've probably had a combined 20 hours tattoo time with her. She is incredibly professional and talented. I have always been more than pleased with the outcome. She is receptive to changes and suggestions to the designs. Anya is not heavy-handed and is quicker than most. Tattoos have always healed up smooth and bright. Above all, she is punctual, polite, detail-oriented, and sober (not a given for some). You will likely meet Kim, who manages scheduling and the front desk paperwork, when entering the shop. She is friendly and professional. She is a friendly yet no-nonsense person. She was especially helpful in squeezing in my friend and I at the last minute. Definitely call for an appointment rather than walking in. If just walking in, it is unlikely that you will be able to talk to an artist directly. They are probably working with another client and you will be asked to schedule a consultation instead. read more

I had my cartilage double pierced at this place with Rob for like $85. He wasn't very friendly at first but when it came to the actual piercing he explained everything he was going to do, what he was going to use, and the product he recommended for aftercare. His technique was a little different from other places I ended up at later. My piercing was left with a stud earring (as opposed to a loose hoop or bar) where the backs were screwed on really tight "to catch the blood" i think and I was supposed to come back a few days later so he could loosen the earrings and "push them back" or something like that. I wasn't able to return and the swelling hurt really bad so I tried to loosen the earrings myself which was super painful and resulted in me getting a cartilage bump which I didnt know how to treat and eventually the piercing became so painful I just let the holes close and go my ear repierced at Sorry Mom Tattoo in Fredericksburg (which was later left with a bar earring and no complications and I wasn't told I needed to return to later for anything). I won't knock this place even though I needed to get repierced because Rob was a professional and I shouldve gone back to explain my complications. But you live and you learn and grow a back bone, so in the future I probably wouldn't let anyone do my ear the same way he did again. read more
