I have natural 4a-4c textured hair (My hair has varying textures). When I moved to Logan Square, it was hard to find a stylist that met my needs. Monty is the owner of Marquin Salon and he meets all of the criteria I require from a stylist. Monty is very experienced with working with all textures of hair and also believes in using high quality products. The salon is clean and modern. I also appreciate that he does not overbook clients for appointments. I have terrible memories from my childhood/teenage years of going to the hair salon in the morning and spending half my day there because the stylist would overbook clients. Immediately after walking in the salon, I am always put right in the shampoo chair and out of the salon in less than 2 hours. The location is near cute boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Most of the parking is meter parking, but you can also snag parking spots on some of the side streets for free with no problem. In regards to public transportation, there is a bus stop just a few feet away and a blue line stop about a 15 minute walk away. We were long overdue for our little girls hair maintenance. She has mixed hair and was matted in large clumps in a few spots. I made an appointment on a Thursday evening and Marquin made room for us on a Sunday afternoon. He was incredibly responsive through Yelp and followed up on the phone. We arrived on a snowy afternoon and were greeted by Chloe with smiles. Our little girl was not looking forward to the appointment, there are normally tears, but, this time was different. First, the salon is clean and comfortable and in a great location. Chloe made her feel at ease, was gentle with her tender head and she was even smiling while getting the knots brushed out. Marquin gave her the perfect trim and then Chloe gave her some super cute pigtails. Her curls are now soft and manageable to brush through and she feels great. I have lived in the West Town neighborhood for YEARS, and never heard of this place. I WISH I had found it years ago. Great for African-American hair styling. My daughter's hair was done for prom. She has a full head of naturally curly (unprocessed) hair. He blew it out, straightened, curled, and topped it off with the most beautiful up-do (he studied in Paris). I do not normally like writing these types of reviews but the phone call I just had with a rep from Marquin really irked me. I called inquiring about a simple wash and blow dry for my hair. Not even a wash and style but just wash and BLOW DRY. I was told $55 is starting price. I asked why does it say $35 on your site and was told "that is the starting price for straight hair." Interesting. Is relaxed hair not chemically straightened hair? I told them that I am a student who has just had surgery on my eye so it's difficult for me to wash my own hair at the moment and that's what I get quoted with? Unacceptable. read more

I found Marquin salon while wondering the streets during the Do Division fest. They were having such a grand time in there and their hair models looked great. I scheduled an appointment for three weeks later. The experience was pretty good. Julia was super sweet in prepping me for a relaxer and shampooing and blowdrying my hair. Let me give you a little history...I've got A LOT of hair. Not a lot of hair in the sense that it's super long, but it's just incredibly thick. The big hair of the 80s? NOT by choice.Over the years, with the use of relaxers and heat I beat it into submission and taught it to do what I wanted. But I'm tired of chemicals in my hair...so I'm going au natural. However, going natural is not easy. I've been doing this since August so I've got half straight, half curly hair and combing through it is actually tiring. So with the help of braids and other hair accoutrements I've been able to look halfway decent. BUT....I was ready to run my fingers through my hair again and I didn't want another relaxer. Enter Marquin. I drove past this chic salon one evening, popped in and told the owner what I was trying to do. He said he could help me out so I made an appointment. i walked out of Marquin one happy chick! He used the Mizani thermal straightening system and got my hair so straight and shiny that I feel like a new woman. The cut isn't exactly what I wanted but we can fix that next time. My hair looked fantastic BUT they broke my cardinal rule, don't overbook! What is the point of actually making appointments if you do this? I make an appointment because it's the time that I can actually make it not because I enjoy showing up on time to watch other women get their hair cut. First let me take a moment to show appreciation to one of the best salons in Chicago! Marquin's is definitely worth 5 stars and more! My previous stylist (great as well) was hard to make consistent appointments with due to conflicts with my work schedule so I began searching for a new stylist that I could have as an alternate when the conflict arose. I started my search online, first by zip code then I narrowed it down by reviews. Based on the previous reviews Marquin's seemed to be the best option. At this point I was a little hesitant to book...1. Selecting a stylist is harder than buying a new car for me, so much detail....the wash, the style, the cut, the tools, the products...it all has to be right 2. There is the unwritten code of loyalty to a stylist similar to that of a marriage so in essence this would be an affair. I drove past a few times and noticed they were open at hours that were very convenient for me, checked out the website and decided to stop in one day to check it out. Upon entering I was greeted by Marquin aka Monty himself! I explained why I was there and he offered to style me the same day as he had the additional time available but usually suggest coming by appointment. He took my coat, offered a beverage and a magazine and it seemed like 5 minutes later he was ready to start. After confessing my loyalties to my other stylist he had me in and out in less than 2 hours. My hair was gorgeous. Loving it so much I booked my next appointment before leaving. I typically go bi-weekly to the salon so I figured I'd alternate between the two stylist to perfectly fit my schedule. However by the 3rd visit I was blown away. His assistant Dee is equally as great and talented. They care about hair here, they explain any deficiencies they notice, suggests products/services that will benefit your hair while getting glammed in a fun & professional atmosphere. I recently had Monty color my hair....LOVE IT...I will admit this affair has now turned the tables. Let me set the stage for you: It was the night of my 10 year high school reunion and like a good procrastinator I had put off getting my hair cut until approximately 5:30 PM that evening (and by putting off getting my haircut I mean I had no appointment or even a salon picked out, and mind you this was also the Friday after Thanksgiving. Smooth...I know) I had just moved to Ukrainian Village and didn't have regular haircut spot so I figured I'd walk up and down Division near Damen and just "find a place." The first three spots I found all wanted upwards of $100, which was a good deal more than I was prepared to spend. I finally came across Marquin Salon and was welcomed in by a tall South American man with a French accent named Montgomery. He told me that his shop was closed but that I would be welcome to come back tomorrow. I explained that I was in a bit of a bind due to a combination of my laziness and propensity for procrastination and need a haircut for my reunion. Montgomery explained to me that due to his beliefs he did not work past sundown on Friday nights and that I happen to catch him as he was heading out. I thanked him and sadly started walking toward the door. Montgomery then stopped me and said it was alright, he would cut my hair. Relieved, I said, "Woohoo!" So he sits me down and gives me the single best haircut of my life. I couldn't have been happier. I turned to him when it was done and asked what I owed. He told me I owed him nothing. He said if he accepted my money then the haircut would have constituted work and therefore contradicted his beliefs, but by giving me the haircut for free he hadn't worked. I was floored. What an outrageously generous and compassionate man! I was sincerely moved by his kindness. I mean, this guy didn't know me. He didn't owe me any favors. He had no reason to go out of his way for me. I asked him if I could give the lady who washed my hair some money and he said it would be OK with him, so I gave her $40. I left my first experience with Montgomery looking fabulous and filled with enormous respect for my fellow man. Now that my friends, is a haircut. Since then (late '05) I've been going to Marquin Salon for all my haircuts. Each one has been fantastic and over the years I have gotten to know Montgomery much better. He is an extraordinary man with much wisdom, passion and grace. He is truly skilled at his craft and is always a pleasure to be around. Do yourself a favor and go to Marquin Salon. Just whatever you do, don't order the Orange Sherbet. That's a joke. They don't have sherbet. read more

Recently moved to Chicago Wicker Park and looking for a decently priced hair salon near my place. Found Marquin on yelp and proceed to get my haircut from Monty. It was great, he is just a badass and know what's the trend and what I might like. All is good in the salon when he styled my hair. Though after I showered it turns out my hair is still a tad bit long for the style he inspired. Went back today and John is willing to trim the top just a little shorter, he sees what Monty is trying to achieve. Overall A+ for both stylist. I've lived in Chicago for five years and have been the most pleased with Marquin's Salon. I've been to 5 or 6 different places and paid anywhere from $13 to $55 for a haircut. Marquin's is $25 (for guys) and it is the best haircut I've EVER gotten. I usually get my haircut from Marquin himself. His memory of our past conversations is incredible. So it's true. This salon is a 5 star joint. The owner is amazing and my hair cut is the bomb. I was nervous in all get out to let someone cut my natural hair. I'm use to going to a professional that was no longer doing hair. I needed a hair cut on short notice. Marquin was able to squeeze me in the next day. I only needed a haircut but he gave me more. He blow dryed my hair and you would have thought I had a relaxer in my head once he was finished. I was very impressed. He also put some Moroccan oil custard I believe in my hair to moisturize it for me. We had a conversation about hair care and other things. It was a pleasant visit and I will be returning again. I'm very particular about who does my hair ever since I had a bad experience with a stylist years ago. Since that stylist messed up my hair, I've been on the search for a new one. I wasn't able to find a stylist who I completely trust with my hair until my sister introduced me to Monty. I met Monty when he first came to the US. I was impressed that he was from France and decided to let him do my hair. From then I fell in love and stopped my search for a new stylist. I've been coming to Monty for over 7 years and would not go to anyone else to do my hair unless Monty moved out of state. I've followed Monty from when he was just a stylist on the south side all the way until he opened his new salon on Division. When you come across such good quality you don't want to go to anyone else and if you do it never compares to the way Monty does hair. Monty is able to do all types of hair from kinky to fine to damaged, straight to wavy to curls. When he asks me,"What are you getting done today, Ms. Johnson?" I simply reply, "do whatever you want." I have so much trust in Monty and his skills that I know whatever he does to my hair is going to look fabulous. Don't go here if you're looking to get a relaxer. I came to Marquin with a full head of very long, thick, natural 4C African-American hair. After 7 months' worth of touch-ups, protein treatments, deep conditionings and all that, I ended up with a nightmare. My hair is now incredibly damaged, despite following his directions to care for relaxed hair to a T. It's now thin, lifeless, and very uneven due to most of it falling out. The edges and back were damn near bald during my last visit to him. His solution? Keep coming more often for more $40 protein treatments and deep conditions, despite my valiant efforts to keep my hair moisturized and strong with the incredibly expensive Moroccan Oil/Mizani products he sells. I should have listened to the red flags on my very first visit. One of his female assistants repeatedly complained about how "thick and kinky" my natural hair was as she forcefully combed through it. Once the first relaxer application was prepared, Marquin rushed through the process so quickly that he slung some of the relaxer into my face. Had I not closed my right eye just seconds before it landed on it, I would've likely been blinded. After whispering a couple of apologies and guiding me to one of the sinks to rinse my face and wash it with a chemical neutralizing shampoo, he let me sit back down and wait for the relaxer to do its thing to my once lovely mane. It seems he forgot about me as he hurried off to cut some girl's hair, because it felt like ages before he decided to rinse the relaxer out. After the whole nightmare ended, my hair actually looked great. I made sure to buy the moisturizing products he recommended to keep it looking good. But as the weeks went on, it began breaking off slowly. I went back to ask why I kept finding bits and pieces of my hair everywhere I went, and why my hairbrush was full of hair every time I brushed it. He said it needed protein and deep conditioning, so I jumped on board in hopes to save my hair. It seemed to help, and I let my hair grow out until I had about 3" of new-growth appeared, a little over 4 months. I had protein treatments and deep conditions done once a month by him, and washed/deep conditioned my hair every weekend at home. After my first touch-up, my hair began falling out ridiculously fast. I found globs of hair in my brushes, split ends left and right, and my hair became see-through at the ends, no longer full like it was in the beginning. No amount of deep conditioning and protein would stop the breakage. I noticed on my last treatment day, he used little to no heat protectant on my hair as he took a 450'F flat iron to it. Under no circumstances would a freshly relaxed head need that kind of heat. I had no hair in the back anymore. My edges were all but gone. The hair at the top of my head had broken off so badly, it began to stick upwards no matter what I did. I asked him over and over why is my hair falling out, despite coming in as often as possible to get my hair treated by a professional. Despite avoiding flat irons at home, sleeping with a silk pillowcase, using only the products I bought from him, and never wearing my hair in ponytails or other tight styles. His suggestion was to just keep coming in for further treatments. I just stopped going to him after that. Luckily my hair has grown back now that I'm wearing box braids again, but it will take years to grow it to mid-back length like before. I regret ever setting foot in his salon, and if you're looking to try a new chemical-laden style on your beautiful natural hair, please don't do it here. read more
