I'm devastated. I searched for black-owned businesses and was encouraged because this one has been around for so long. I had a consultation with Antonia. I suffer from alopecia. I came with photos of a woman with the exact situation as mine, showing her before and after. I asked if it was possible, like her, to go from shoulder-length dark hair to short silver/white hair and was told "it might take two lifts, but yes". I asked if that meant two visits and was told no, just one. The space is large, clean and inviting and she was so nice and friendly so I eagerly booked. Day of, I again asked the short hair-specialist stylist after showing her photos if it was possible. She said the same "it might take two lifts, but one visit." Any dye in my hair was cut off as it had been 6 months and I was going pixie short. I emphasized that I wanted white hair, not yellow. The first "lift" left me with orange hair. She was going to add just a tint and I said I thought you said two lifts, so she added more dye. At the end of my 5-hour appointment I'm sitting there with yellow coarse hair the color and texture of dry straw. I could feel how short it was each time the tiny curling iron touched my scalp. I couldn't see, since I was faced away from the mirror the whole time. I am used to them going shorter than I want but it will grow in. When she turned me around I wanted to cry. She knew I wasn't happy and I said the color was not what I wanted. She then said "you don't want to go that stark at once". Rather than admit she wasn't able to do as she said, she tried to make it seem she did what she thought was best. But then she said I could come back in two weeks to lighten it to what I wanted! If you don't have a professional colorist on staff, just say so. Say you can't do something. When I touched it, I thought it was hard due to whatever all the spray was. Nope, my hair is now hard, brittle, dull, stiff and YELLOW. It was once silky and shiny. I had blisters in my hair line the next day (I put Neosporin on them) and it's still breaking off over a week later. I've used vacation days rather than go into the office and I keep my camera off. I know some places don't care about repeat business, but a woman's hair is her identity. I've gone to two other professional colorists in the last two days, and the only thing I can do is try to repair the damage while it grows out to soften it. The color can't be corrected, nor will anyone touch up my roots when they grow in for fear of further damage to the already dyed (fried) hair. I have to wait 6 weeks minimum before any more chemicals are put on my hair, but the advice is to grow it out completely which is longer than 6 weeks. My other option is to wear a wig. Otherwise, I will be walking around looking like a clown. Maybe they can do simple cut and styles, but be wary if you're looking for a color change. 35 years in business doesn't equate to experience or treatment you will receive. Antonia wasn't there when I left, but I can't imagine an apology would have been offered, nor blame accepted. read more

The Good: Let me start off by saying the studio is beautiful and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. They provide free breakfast and lunch (at least they did when i was there). Very professional. The Bad: My hair is ruined. My hair before was VERY thick, coarse, coily, and dense. I went for a texturizer (a relaxer but less processing time and not smoothed out) and discussed I wanted to still have the ability to wear my hair curly but with less shrinkage and more manageability. The stylist agreed that was doable. Everything went fine, very little scalp irritation. After the texturizer, they blow dried and straightened my hair. Today, I washed and conditioned my hair but my hair could barely hold a curl. I called the manager, and they asked me to come into the salon. They did what they could to repair after I complained that my hair could barely curl up. They offered me a refund but there's no way I can recommend the studio for the service I received. However, I guess I can say if my hair were to be ruined, I'd rather it be by this salon because they did try to correct it. I don't think there was a miscommunication. Technique wise the stylist did exactly what we discussed but the result didn't match. I didn't time how long the texturizer was on my hair but it didn't feel like a long time. I got a texturizer about 7 years ago, based on that experience I can't pinpoint where things went wrong. I don't want to call out a stylist, because I don't believe in that. I was told that all the stylists have the same training. The stylist and I both spoke and had trouble pin pointing where things went wrong. It's difficult to have a 100% success rate. You can be the 'perfect' stylist but there are going to be times where the formula or technique you have may not work for whatever reason. I just wish it hadn't happened to me because it's everyone's nightmare. I'll more than likely have to big chop again, because my natural hair texture varies too much from the over processed portions. read more

Let me just start by saying I LOVE VAN CLEEF!! I get my hair done once a week here. The relationship started off a little rocky though. I was transitioning into wearing my hair natural and the stylist I was recommended to was very rough with my hair and me being oblivious didn't realize she was taking it out until it was too late. I complained and voiced my concerns and frankly just stop going. That's were the best customer service of all time kicked in. I was contacted by phone and mail with a letter apologizing and offering a six month discount in order for me to come back and get my hair healthy again. The store owner Rahni doesn't do hair for the money, but is genuinely concerned about the health and up keep of his customers hair. I was a little apprehensive, but took him up on his offer. I started to get double deep conditioners and Rahni took great care of my hair. I am really noticing a difference and my hair is once again healthy. Rahni specializes in natural hair and growing healthy long hair, which is exactly what I want. He doesn't apply a lot of heat, but your hair still looks sleek and shiny once he's done. I haven't gone back to being completely natural until my hair grows out a little bit more, but I don't get straight relaxers either. Every 3 or 4 months I have Rahni give me a texturizer which doesn't leave my hair completely bone straight, but gets some of the kinks in the root of the hair out. As long as the service continues to be as it is now Rahni has a life time customer. The price although expensive is reasonable compared to other places in the city and the location is prime real estate. Rahni deserves 5 stars and nothing less. I found this place after desperately searching for a hair salon in Chicago that actually cares about healthy hair care and making sure that my hair grows, not like a lot of these neighborhood hair salons that only care about slapping gel and other mess in it. I looked the place up, had an initial phone consultation and went in and was matched with Danielle..... That was almost 2 yrs ago and I havent went anywhere else since! Danielle has been the best and gets you in and out, not dragging to sit on the phone and talk or wander off and eat! The environment is professional and its very clean. A little more pricey, but when it comes to my hair, I dont put a price on it. My hair has grown from just touching the top of my shoulders to a little past my bra-strap. This place is wonderful! It's a huge, multicultural salon, and provides a number of services. It's a bit pricier than I'm used to (and I'm coming from DC!) but the quality of work makes it worth it. They increase the price for certain services by how long your hair is but they don't tell you how much that will be before you get the service. That's my main problem but I got over it. I called Van Cleef @the recommendation of a friend. The person who answered the phone was fabulous. I phoned to schedule a consultation with a stylist who could style and retwist locs. I was scheduled with Karin for the consult. It was explained to me by both the receptionist and the co-owner the importance of being timely. I got it. My appointment was scheduled for 12:30pm on Saturday August 31st. Traffic was horrendous that day - it was the Saturday before the Labor Day holiday and there were tons of activities and public transit delays. I was NOT going to be late for my consult no matter what. Well I had to wonder up getting a taxi to the salon but was pleased that I arrived 18 minutes before my appointment time. Sweet! I was greeted professionally by the front desk staff and offered a refreshment which I declined. I was told by the front desk receptionist that she'd let Karin know of my arrival. Well at 12:32pm Karin came to advise me she was running late and would be an additional 15 minutes or so. Hmmm! Well so much for promptness. I guess only the customers have to be on time. Anyway when I finally got to sit in Karin's chair I was struck by her seemingly lack of knowledge of Locs. She focused on the fees for service (it never occurred to me the services would be FREE!) and not helping me the person who was seeking a professional opinion. She asked me to bring her a picture of styles that I might like. She didn't emphasize what she was capable of providing. Karin then walked me to the front desk and made sure I had a price list and a hug! I wanted to do a big chop, taking my almost waist length natural hair to a tapered short cut. After reading glowing reviews, I decided to come to Van Cleef Hair Studio. Making an appointment was quick and easy. Upon arriving, I was greeted right away and I was very impressed with the overall atmosphere of the salon. When I met my stylist, Jacqui, she walked me over to meet the owner, which I thought was a nice touch. I sat down in her chair and explained what I wanted to do with my hair, showing her multiple pictures of the style that I wanted. She said it wouldn't be a problem and we got started. Everything went ok however, when we reached the styling of my new cut, she seemed very rushed (I was the only client in the salon). She then told me that they didn't have the right products to style my hair. My natural hair texture ranges from 3A to 4B. In my 10+ years of having natural hair, I have never had anyone say that they couldn't style my hair. Also, I think that if you have a natural hair salon, you should have products that can accommodate all hair types and textures. I ended up leaving the salon with completely unstyled hair. When I got home I had to rewet and style my hair. After having my cut for a few weeks and playing around with it, I noticed some areas where the cut was uneven. In the end, I went to a barbershop to have my tapered cut fixed. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Van Cleef Hair Studio to anyone who does not have loose curls. Otherwise, you will be doing your hair all over again after you leave the salon. read more

I have gotten a textrurizer a few times, which worked out really well for me. She also is willing to come in super early in the morning which has been really convenient for my schedule. Absolutely the best service in a salon! When I called to make an appointment, I explained I was a new client and the receptionist transferred me to the manager who wanted to know more about my hair and what I wanted done. The day I arrive I was a couple minutes late. The receptionist phoned for my stylist (Jackie) who was there right away. Jackie showed me around, I met the owner and she immediately went to work. I got a deep condition and a haircut only. I have been very hesitant to go to any salon for a haircut because a lot of stylists want to cut it very short or straighten my hair and then cut it (which I don't want because I'm trying to prevent damage to my hair). The deep conditioning was pleasant. Then Jackie sat me in the chair and examined my hair. I told her I wanted my hair to have a shape, I wanted layers and I just wanted it to be healthy. I showed her pictures and she took note of them. She then showed me at what length she would cut my hair and I agreed since it was damaged from me straightening it and basically not taking as much care as I should. Jackie did an excellent job! I had no idea how my hair was going to look, but she was perfect! I highly recommend anyone trying to go natural! I have never been so excited to write a review for Yelp as I am to write about my experience at Van Cleef Hair Studio, it's the best in Chicago! OK, let me calm down. But seriously, I had one of the best salon experience's I've ever had in my life at Van Cleef! Kudos to the whole team! I made an appointment with Van Cleef after reading some great Yelp reviews about a specific stylist - Evvy (I'll get to her fabulousness later). So I called the studio -- the receptionist was warm and informative. I was able to book an appoinment two weeks out, she answered all my questions about products and pricing. I even received a follow-up phone call confirming my appointment the day before my service. Excellent customer orientation! When I arrived, I was greeted by the receptionist. I filled out a first-time-customer card, and was told I would be receiving a discount card for my next service (Awesome!). They informed Evvy that I had arrived and instructed me to go to the changing room and put on a robe. The entire studio is beautiful, great decor and supurb lighting through out the entire facility. Everything was clean, the air was fresh and the overall atmosphere was warm and friendly. I changed into my robe and waited for about 5 minutes until Evvy greeted me. What a sweetheart she is! Down to earth and very friendly. She walked me back to her chair and asked me general questions about my hair history, what types of products I would like, and any special instructions I had for my service. Once again, amazing! She went right to work. Chatting with me about how I found the salon, what I'm interested in and if I like Chicago since I just recently moved here.... When I was ready to be shampooed and deep conditioned, I was greeted by Evvy's assistant Lamount. Talk about AMAZING! This man gave me the BEST shampoo/massage and deep condition that I have ever had in my life. It was so relaxing I dozed off a couple times... I sat under the dryer with my deep conditioner in my hair for about 10 minutes (which is great because normally stylists leave you under the dryer for WAY too long). Lamount rinsed me and blow dried my hair so gently -- this is key because I hate stylists who are rough with your hair and scalp. Lamount was gentle and attentive. Next Evvy hydrated my hair, trimmed it and flat ironed it in less than 30 minutes, period. Never in my life have I been in a salon for a relaxer, deep condition, blow-dry, trim and style and left in 1 hour. Yes, that's right ladies, 1 HOUR. My hair looked, smelled and felt FABULOUS. I've never had so much body and volume in my hair. Not to mention my scalp felt renewed and hydrated. No over-processing, no overheating, no rough handling of my scalp or hair. Just sheer perfection... I was too through with myself, smiling ear to ear when I jumped out of the styling chair, happy as can be! Before I left to pay for my services, Evvy gave me her card and a HUGE hug and said she was very happy to meet me and she looks forward to seeing me again soon. And that she will. I will now have a standing appointment with Evvy until that woman retires!!! Not to mention, every single woman in the salon walked out looking fierce and FABULOUS. Happy bouncy, curly, straight, silky and shiny, relaxed, natural, everything. The whole nine-yards. I paid for my services and left a nice tip for both Evvy and Lamount, her assistant. The receptionists made sure I was all set to go, and had a good experience. In summary: Van Cleer Hair Studo is a classy salon with excellent customer orientation, and amazing stylists. They specialize in natural and relaxed hair for African-American women, and even offer spa services. I highly recommend Evvy and her assistant Lamount (Evvy specializes in natural hair, color and cutting but, she is good and passionate about all types of hair services).
