Upon check in - I mentioned that my daughter's birthday was during our trip. The front desk team member sent up a balloon and chocolate to our room! It was totally amazing for her. The food service was great and the food was wonderful. This hotel is conveniently located to the University of South Carolina and walking distance to the Vista. The front desk staff is great at this hotel and will help you with anything you need! The pool area was relaxing for us while the kids swum. Our rooms where clean and the house keeping service was excellent on our rooms. We have booked another trip to USC and have our rooms already reserved for the next time we visit the university. read more

"It doesn't feel like we are in Columbia!" That was our conclusion as we were gulping down on the lavish breakfast buffet (we too got the free breakfast coupons, hallelujah!) I concur with all the goodies Kate pointed out minus the bed gaffe. In fact we slept like a charm in our fluffy, soft, super clean queen size bed. There is more to the story... My husband and I recently spend the weekend at Marriott downtown Columbia. We live not far from the city...this is our first "gateway in our own city sort of speak" in over 10 years. We were pleasantly surprised! Initially everything pointed to DISASTER: 100 plus high-school kids have lodged same time as us (there was Journalistic conference). The rooms were all sold out, there were huge lines to catch elevators, and I was dreadful of the night ahead: slamming doors, screams on the hallways, teenage drama unfolding in the middle of the night. Bye bye sleep, peace and quiet. Well everything turned out perfectly: 1. The check-in staff found us a nice Queen room ($109/night) plus free breakfast with unlimited Starbucks coffee, made to order omelets, gourmet cheese and deli, fresh cut fruit and all the Southern delights you can wish for. 2. The kids were very polite and always let us get in front at the elevators 3. Despite the fact there was a late night banquet going on we didn't hear a thing! Turned out my hubby's snoring was more problematic than the kids next door. 4. The bar waiters were very cordial and attentive to out of town tourist giving detailed recommendations about local restaurants. Bottom line the hotel offers high quality accommodations at very affordable rates and an excellent location. You're within minutes to the State Capitol, Museum of Art, EdVenture and State Museum, a plethora of historic houses and all kinds of restaurants. read more

This is a prime location for Main street exploration in downtown Columbia. I have eaten in the Marriott restaurant twice now and can't wait to go back. The servers and bartenders make sure you feel welcomed and are incredibly knowledgeable about the food. Many of the dishes feature local produce and the craft beer selections from around the state are fun to try. Jeff Kaplan, the executive chef, made it a point to stop by and check on our meal which is a nice touch. Let me just tell you... if you are a fan of shrimp and grits- these are the best I've had. I have had food dreams those shrimp and grits. My friend had a brisket sandwich which looked to die for and let me sneak a few of her truffle fries. When we returned, we started out with the crab cakes. They were full of actual crab meat, no silly filler. The remoulade type sauce was killer, and topped with some kind of micro-green. It was tasty! This second time around I had to force myself to try something other than the shrimp and grits, and a grilled scallop skewer was what I picked. It was one of the specials that evening and was grilled with a nice lemon butter sauce, DELISH! For dessert we had the bread pudding- this too has made an appearance in said food dreams; don't leave without trying this. Overall, I am just totally impressed with the Marriott's restaurant. The first night was fine and everything you would expect from a normal Marriott stay. Whoa, second night, and I am pissed. The concierge room on the second night has gotten both the dinner and the desert items out late. I know "First World Problems" but hey I live a third of my life in these hotels and they damn well better have the meals out on time. I literally am starving at 5:00 and standing around waiting for the food makes me mental. If you are going to get anything right at a Marriott get the amenities correct and on time for your Loyalty members. read more

I have stayed in this marriott a number of times. It is a great location - particularly on Saturday mornings it is right by the soda city street fair - great fun to walk around. The restaurant in the hotel is surprisingly good - particularly the pimiento cheese/green tomato/bacon sandwich - I would stay here again for that alone! Everyone who works at this hotel is incredibly pleasant. Chris in particular at the front desk makes sure everyones stay starts on a good note. I travel a lot and in my mind that always makes up for any other challenges. The only problem I found at this hotel is with the parking garage. Since the University opened a student housing building next door in August 2014 the deck is a zoo - borderline war zone. I have usually self parked here but think i will valet next time to avoid it. I almost was rear ended twice and nearly hit someone coming up the wrong way on an exit ramp. Note to students - on the scale of bad ideas - I am pretty sure drunk driving a moped is close to the top. Nevertheless - great well run hotel and I will certainly stay here again. read more

Great location, friendly staff, clean and well maintained rooms. There is a small concierge that has good food but doesn't have as much variety compared to other Marriotts I've been too. The internet worked and was free, the pool and fitness area were clean, and self parking (although at $12/day) had easy access. There are other hotels in the area that are in the same class as this Marriott but you shouldn't have any regrets with this one. read more

First.... very nice people working here. Really. However, this place needs an update.... badly. Here's the list... Doors need oiled so that you can actually get the handle to turn when you're trying to enter your room. Bathroom shower had BAD mildew in the grout in SEVERAL places. Alarm clock didn't work. Bathroom fixtures were old and showed the wear badly. Downstairs... The food in buffet was not kept fresh and there were dirty plates on the stack. Not just one because that can happen... but several. First time in a Marriott in over three years (and I travel ALL the time) and it will be that long again til I do this. Nice Hilton Garden Inn nearby and it's better, from what I hear. read more

Upon arrival nice hotel but not up to standards in my opinion if the flagship hotel of the Marriott chain. Staff were perfect, welcoming and no complaints there. Lobby feels cold. Not cozy and comfortable. There is one bar / restaurant and has limited to no food late at night. Rooms are ok but to be honest not as well equipped as a Hampton Inn. ie: Only 2 paper coffee cups, no room safe and no water bottles. read more

I've stayed here once before and didn't stay long to have an opinion. This time around I was here longer and honestly not impressed , in fact disappointed. From the thin walls to the beds barely made to roaches in my room. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised but considering this hotel is off Main Street , I would expect a much cleaner establishment. The thought of roaches crawling into my belongings just freaks me out and has me sleeping with the lights on. Needless to say, no sleep will be had. Why should I call reception when they will only try to move me to another room at this point and we all know , where there is one , there are plenty! Can't wait to leave!! read more

On 06-28-2011 I had originally booked a suite at the Whitney Hotel which ended up being a epic fail. I immediately called the Marriott and spoke with Michael (the manager on shift that evening).... Michael booked our rooms and we had a place to stay in a matter of three minutes. He was polite and funny (which after driving 24 hours was greatly appreciated)... The receptionist working for him was just as helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who appreciates good customer service! read more

Stayed here for a USC home game vs. Clemson. Only stayed one night, fairly typical hotel stay, very comfortable. Ordered some drunk room service, tasty and reasonibly priced. My good rating really goes to the customer service after my stay. I had belived I left a little makeup bag in the room. I called 2 days after my stay, the woman took my information, checked with house keeping and found it! While the contents weren't extremely valuable, it's a little comfort for woman to have their own makeup. The Marriott representative Fedexed it back to me in Chicago and I had it 2 days later. It's nice to know after your stay, after they've already made their money, they're willing to go a little further for good customer service. Thanks Marriott :) read more

The staff here was awesome in regards to customer service. I was here for a work conference and they went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. Our main sales person Erika (kudos to you, Erika), was very professional and helpful. However, we did have several issues with some of the local homeless people roaming freely around the hotel. I live in a city where the homeless population is very prevalent so I understand that it's sometimes inevitable that you will be in contact with them at some point. This may be the case, but I would rather them not walk around and loiter in the hotel that I'm staying. The staff responded to one incident, finally, that should have been resolved before it escalated to having to call the police. My suggestion would be to have some security in the building or a key only access, especially to get to the guest room floors. Secondly and a little less important, but this hotel could use some renovations and refresh throughout to make it a more enjoyable place to stay. Thirdly, the hotel has an insect problem. There were a significant number of flies, and gnats. There was also an issue with small roaches in my room. A co-worker of mine had the same issue and had to be moved to another room. This seems to be an overall problem, so a room change does not resolve the main issue at hand. My intention is not to bash this hotel, but to bring light to some issues that if changed could make this Marriott a 5 star first choice hotel. read more

I have stayed in this Marriott for business a number of times. It is a great location - the museum is right across the street, it's convenient to a number of restaurants and the capitol. The restaurant in the hotel is very good. I loved the shrimp and grits. The concierge lounge is also excellent for Marriott rewards members - in the evening they have a chef prepare meals for the guests. Everyone who works at this hotel is absolutely pleasant - they remember your name and what you like. Christian is practically my new BFF - it's simply to say he's a lovely person and so is everyone else who works at the hotel. One day I returned to the hotel a little bleary-eyed and the maid asked me if I was ok - that gesture really touched me. I would stay here for holiday travel as well. This is a VERY well run hotel and I will certainly stay here again. read more

I'm sorry to give such a low rating. The service at the hotel was excellent. From the front desk to valet to restaurant. It was perfect. The room was fine, and clean. I'm not sure if the is a problem in just the 9th floor or is hotel wide, but the doors SLAM shut. We were there on a busy weekend, so that meant the slammng started at about 6 am and was problem every night as well. Every 10 or 15 minutes, so loud and hard that the walls shook. We even did it twice by accident. Something needs to be changed with these doors. If you can't sleep at a hotel, nothing else matters. Sorry for the bad rating. read more

Considering that a) the hotel was undergoing renovations, and b) there was a sprinkler malfunction that required us to go to other hotels for the first part of our trip, I'd say the Marriott handled things pretty well. They got us back to our reserved rooms as quickly as possible, they shuttled folks between our conference and the other hotels, and they apologized for the situation with a wine/beer reception and free breakfast vouchers. My room was clean, and the A/C worked great (key for Columbia in the summer)! read more

Was given the government rate of $89 per night can't beat that. Decent Internet speed. Was given the 10th floor, so got a nice view of the city. Rooms were clean. Stayed one night in this hotel and I don't have enough words to express the wonderful experience I had. First, I was greeted by a front desk gentleman whose name was Christian with a big smile and a very professional service. He checked me in very fast and even offered free bottled water. He was also very helpful when I asked for guidance in the surrounding area. The room was very clean and bed sheets were fresh smelling. Check out was at noon and unlike many other hotels where check out is at 11:00. Fresh coffee and tea in the room, where I was able to enjoy the view from my room in a peaceful manner. I was very delighted and would be happy to return should I pass through Columbia again. Very satisfied! read more

The food is good but extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemely slow. One person in the Garnets Sports Bar to handle everyone and one waiter to handle the City Grille restaurant. Nice hotel but it operates on the cheap with bare minimum staff. Never mind that I have to move to a different room for a leak above my toilet. The next room had a 1.5 inch hole in the bathroom that I cut my foot on (didn't expect it there) and the deadbolt broke on the room. Had a great stay here on a road trip for the holiday. The staff (lobby, front desk, bar, restaurant) are incredibly helpful and friendly. The hotel has just gone through what must have been a huge renovation - its impressive. There are apartments being built in a building that connects to the Marriott, which is interesting to see; it definitely adds to the "hip" feeling of the interior. The bar and restaurant all check out too - we had drinks at the bar the night we stayed and the prices were fair, the service was good and even the appetizer we shared was delicious (truffle fries). We saw countless dinner plates go out to the dining room and they all looked tasty and well constructed. Breakfast in the morning was very good - we ordered off the menu but there was also a buffet style set up in the dining room. The selections there looked good as well but we were interested in some of the items on the menu. Again, the service was excellent. Friendly but still hands off enough to not be bothersome. We used the gym during our stay as well. We are regulars at the Y here in Richmond, VA so we are used to the machines at the hotel but the best part was that these are all the newest models. The free weights were also nice and new. They just have a very good selection (albeit small) of workout equipment. There are towels, water and even fruit - its all very thoughtful. We did not get the chance to use either but the hotel also has a large heated pool and jacuzzi located right next to the gym. The facilities were spotless and very comfortable, I can imagine hanging out in there for a while the next time we stay. The location of the hotel is good too - we were able to walk out of the hotel and find our way to a delicious dinner (Menkoi Ramen House) and to dessert (TCBY) and even coffee (Starbucks) with ease. The area immediately around the hotel is beautifully decorated for the holidays, there are several restaurants, shops, galleries, a library and a museum all within walking distance. Overall, this was one of the better hotel stays I have experienced in about five years. read more

I was here with a large group for the AAA National Arm Wrestling tournament. The staff was awesome, place was clean and a nice street fair every Saturday. The Bistro in the lobby has really good food. I ate there a few times but the Fried green tomato BLT was outstanding. A real nice twist on a BLT with pimento cheese.. Overall, staff was very friendly and the hotel was in a great area. We were even able to check in a little early, which was amazing (and I know difficult at busy times of the year). Some notes for improvement: * Under the bed was disgusting. There was so much dust that it was tough to think about being in the room. If you have rooms that have under-beds (many hotel rooms do not), please vacuum and dust under there. * Smoke Alarm: First night we stayed we were awoken by a dying battery in the smoke detector. While the staff was very friendly, we were up for almost 2 hours while they fixed the issue. Needless to say, it was tough to enjoy a nights rest with maintenance staff (albeit very friendly) in and out of the room between 12am and 2am. Even after calling the Front Desk about this, we never received acknowledgement or apology for the inconvenience. Tough to swallow for $200+ dollars a night. read more

We arranged a hotel block for a family wedding and received excellent pricing and service. We were given an upgraded room for ourselves and a suite for the bride and groom at the same low price. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and professional. Requests were met quickly, efficiently, and with a smile. Rooms are a little dated, but they were comfortable, clean and adequate. Honestly, the people made the difference. Every single person we interacted with was terrific. The location is also perfect being downtown and within walking distance of many shops and restaurants. We highly recommend this hotel if you are looking to stay in Columbia. read more
