Well I was walking down Newport Blvd. looking for a place to get a haircut, I finally gave up because either some salons didn't have space for me (I didn't have an appointment or anything just looking for a good hair salon or they were women salons) On my way back to my car I passes by a sign that said "Mars Salon Open." I was like what the heck lets see if i can get a hair cut. My old haircut was from Luxury Hair Design, I asked for a faux-hawk, I end up with some weird haircut. Anyways entering the hair salon, it was very feminine, not what I am used to but I asked if I can get a quick haircut. After filling out a form my stylist came, her name was Sylvia. It was very pleasant talking to her. She was very nice ans seem to be know what she was doing. In the end my haircut was exactly the same as in the photo! I was amazed. The total cost was $44 a little bit on the expensive side, but was worth it. The only con was that she didn't blow hair my hair that much so i still had a bunch of cut hair in my hair. But I was holding up one of her other customers who had an appointment so its alright. Overall it was a good place, and if Sylvia if your reading this THANKS FOR THE AWESOME HAIRCUT! read more

I recently came in to Mars Hair Studio to get an update on my color. I had let my natural color grow out completely, and it was looking pretty dull. Marti, the owner, used a technique called "balayage," that gave me a bright and natural-looking result. Marti took my hair from "blah" to AMAZING! Wow. On a side note, I'm thinking of doing a VIP Club Crawl, but the reviews looked questionable. I did a search on "paying for yelp ads" and came across a NY Times article on just that. After reading it, I learned Yelp filter reviews by an algorithm and they said sometimes "real" users like me, get filtered. I went online to see if I got filtered, and I DID! So don't be fooled into thinking all reviews are filtered, although now I'm super paranoid. Now onto this review, where I hope I don't get filtered again :( Marti had specifically asked that if I had a good experience with her, to write a review, which I did, so I did. I am a real person, who had been referred to by my friend Tamela, and she REALLY DOES do great hair. It makes me sad that she has so many filtered reviews. I think she might have just started asking all her clients around the same time to post reviews, which makes it look fake. What a bummer. It could be maybe that she could be paying people to rate her salon, but it seems so shady I couldn't imagine her doing that. I have been going to Mars studio for over 15 years. Martis and Sylvia are truly the "Dream Team" of hair! I live in Hawaii now and still fly back for them to cut and color my hair. They are always ahead of the trends with cuts, color and products. They had Moroccan oil products years before it became mainstream. I constantly get compliments on my hair and asked who does it. I had the hardest time growing out my hair long and making sure it's growing out healthy. I now have long hair down my back because of the great cut, proper coloring and the best products. No damage from over processing the color and my highlights are always beautiful. Thats a true testament of talent and experience from both Martis and Sylvia. I have been coming here now for a couple of years and can honestly say I have never had a better hair experience. I came here as a suggestion by a friend, and was first really happy with how friendly everyone was. I set an appointment and went. It is a smaller boutique style salon, but with the biggest hearts! I was welcomed by a girl in the front, I think her name was Anna (sorry if wrong), and promptly sat down to one of the ladies' booths. I asked her what she thought would be best for my hair, and she gave me positive feedback. Nothing drastic was necessary, thank goodness. I got a wash and a cut, then I was told that as a guy if my hair is thinning as I get older, if I got just a few highlights it would help cover that easily. I was honestly skeptical and I have never had color in my hair aside from Halloween. I am a straight normal white man, I don't do flashy hairstyles or color (no offence to those that do, but you know what I mean)... Nevertheless, it worked! I have brown hair and they gave me a few small touches of a honey auburn golden brown (Idk how to describe any better than that) and it looks amazing. I am glad I went to this place. I went here a few weeks ago. Sylvia is a terrible stylist. I was referred to the salon by a friend. I have had bad haircuts before but this one was the absolute worst. I ran out of the studio so fast and immediately contacted my regular stylist and made an appointment for her to attempt to salvage what was left after Sylvia's chop job. (I also cried all the way home) Marti is very nice and good at color, but I was so livid about my hair I am unable to give more than 1 star. This salon is also incredibly overpriced ($90 for a haircut / $250 for coloring). Do not use Beverly Hills pricing in a Costa Mesa side street studio. read more

These two negative reviews are rubbish and possibly fraudulent .. the salon is immaculate, and I have never seen so much as a fly inside, never mind a cockroach. They have never failed to answer the phone promptly and courtesously, or to call me back when I have left a message after hours, never. It is nonsense, and motivated by some sort of revenge vendetta having nothing to do with the salon. 10 years ago I discovered Mar's Salon by asking a stranger who did their hair because it looked amazing. Marty and Slyvia did my hair for years and then we moved to LA. The drive was just too far so I started trying to find a replacement in LA. There just wasn't one. I could be considered a "hair snob" and have paid a small fortune for my cut and color because I really want it to look great. I went to salon's from Beverly Hills to Malibu and was never really excited by what they did. Every time I got my hair done my husband became accustomed to saying "you like it but don't love it right?". I was NEVER able to find anyone who did the perfect color and cut like Marty and Sylvia. Bad Energy when u walk in. Not to sure where the center of it is.Very small salon. All I wanted was Black and yet i walk out with Red Roots. I didnt think that one color process was difficult. When i went back to get it fixed it seemed like I was the one in the wrong. So I would not recommend.
