I came in asking for a rich brown. Instead, I left with a very noticeable red/orange band across the top of my head that doesn't blend with the rest of my hair. I never asked for red hair, and the result is nothing like what I requested. Before I left the salon, after my hair was styled, I pointed out the banding because I could tell something looked off. I was told it looked fine, so I trusted the stylist's professional judgment. Looking back, I wish my concerns had been taken more seriously. I left for a planned trip to Europe shortly after my appointment, so I wasn't able to come back immediately. However, as soon as I returned, I repeatedly tried contacting my stylist and left multiple messages. I never received a response. When I finally spoke with the salon, I expected them to stand behind their work and correct the color. Instead, I was told I would have to pay again for an all-over color to fix a result that wasn't what I had asked for in the first place. At this point, I'll likely have to go to another salon for a professional color correction. Between what I already paid here and what it will cost to fix, I'm out around $500 or more. If achieving a rich brown on my hair wasn't something they were confident they could do, I wish they had been upfront about that before starting the service. I would have appreciated that honesty far more than ending up with a color I didn't ask for and an expensive correction process.

When I brought up my concerns, the owner, I sent her this same video (Emily) explained that this is what the salon considers a partial ROOT highlight touchup. I already had my hair previously bleached . I respect that explanation, but for $240 plus a $50 tip ($290 total), I expected a more noticeable result. She offered to correct it for an additional $50. I'm sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision and have a clear understanding of what this salon considers a partial highlight ROOT service.

I went to her in October for a refresh of my highlights. I was already nervous, since my previous stylist had moved away and always took great care of my fine hair, making sure it never got damaged. I told Caitlyn upfront that I was anxious about letting someone new bleach my hair, given a history of stylists frying it, and that I chose her specifically because she's a senior stylist. She reassured me she doesn't use heat dryers and starts with a low developer, so my hair would be fine. Once I was in the chair, I explained exactly what I wanted: a little brighter, a refresh of all my highlights, but keeping the dark root and dimension shown in my before photo. She agreed and got started. She never mentioned pricing, so I assumed it would be around $400 at most. During the appointment, she suggested going through my ends because they looked dark. I said maybe next time, since I wanted to preserve the integrity of my hair. Later, she mentioned she'd gone ahead and done a few extra pieces at the bottom anyway something I never asked for. By the time she finished washing my hair, it was already dark outside, so I told her not to worry about blow-drying it. I went home with wet hair. Even then, it looked extremely blonde, which worried me, but I assumed it was just because it was wet. At checkout, I was shocked: the total came to $650. I left a tip anyway because she was watching the screen as I paid and I felt put on the spot. (Receipts attached.) When I got home, my husband immediately said my hair looked way too blonde and pointed out broken pieces. He was right. Over the next few days, it kept breaking. My hair had taken years to get healthy, and in one appointment it became dry, brittle, and was falling out. The extra strands she did without asking only made the breakage worse. I ended up buying box dye to fix the color myself, since I hated how it looked. As of June 2026, I've had to cut at least 8 inches off, and I'm still working to repair the damage. This experience caused me real distress -- I loved my hair, and I deeply regret trying a new stylist. I'm sharing this so it doesn't happen to anyone else. Alex with the long red hair is the absolute best! I've gone to her for about 3 years and thrown every hair color in the book at her and she's nailed it every time. Seriously, I went from red, to platinum blonde, to a natural blonde balayage and she not only made it happen, she made sure my hair was healthy during all the entire process. But at Salty you can count on all the stylists to know the trendiest new lewks, colors, styles... it's insane. They are all so trendy and stylish themselves that you can really trust them to not make you look like a dork. Or accidentally give you dreaded chunky symmetrical highlights... You're safe in their stylish hands!! Salty is located near other trendy Costa Mesa destinations, mostly of the foodie variety. Sidecar Donuts is just a stones throw away! Salty shares a parking lot with Circle K which almost gives the hip salon a gritty ironic vibe. When you walk into the salon you are struck by the minimal yet bold decor. The walls are adored with two cherry wood peaks that really set the tone for the rest of the mid-century modern space. Besides being an amazing hairstylist, Judith is extremely personable and makes you feel like you have known her forever. It was my first time here and I was excited to try a new stylist. I then spent 90% of my appointment with my stylists' young assistant who did my color, shampoo and blow dry...all without my stylist checking on me even once. In the process I was shifted between multiple chairs and when I asked if I would be returning to the stylist's station, the assistant told me no and directly said the salon was set up for the stylists to take multiple clients and my stylist was doing someone else in her chair now. It was very clear she was juggling multiple people and came to me for the last 10 minutes of my appointment. Stylist then proceeded to give me an awful bang cut...I mean bordering on microbangs with weird straight razoring technique layers all around my face. It wasn't at all what I had asked for. She spent 5 minutes hacking away without once turning me around to see what she was doing or collaborating with me at all. When I've had bangs in the past, other stylists have done very incremental cutting, making sure I'm comfortable with the length the whole way. This was the opposite of that because she was rushing to get to the other person she had in her chair. I was then left to pay the $250+ bill...for a gloss service done by an assistant and an awful bang cut that took 5 minutes. I cried the whole way home from the salon. It's been two months and I'm still struggling to deal with the cut which literally is always frizzy and lays horribly. It's a bummer because this salon was bright, clean and a good atmosphere but the vibes don't cancel out a poor result and subpar service...all for hair I am embarrassed of and an overall not great experience, the exact opposite of the rare self care time I was hoping for. If you can't juggle clients without sacrificing client satisfaction...don't do it. If your young assistant is having to take care of 90% of someone's service, the price of the service should reflect that and a disclaimer should be given upon booking. Edit: the technique she used was slide cutting and specifically should not be used on fine hair I have now been told by another professional. She badly damaged the all of the hair on both sides of my face to where the whole shaft is frayed and the bangs are thin and sparse. I have confirmation from another stylist I've since seen that this was a poorly executed hair cut and she was surprised to hear it had been done by a professional.
