This review is for David File (Dave's Instagram is @davidfile) I went all out - my hair was down to my waist and I went for a pixie cut! I never cut my hair this short and it took two months of Yelp research to find someone. I found David File. The receptionist was a very nice lady. The reviews I've read on David were true - he's extreme perfectionist, super quiet, focused stylist. I am glad I read the reviews beforehand, because I could easily think he didn't like me lol. I could tell he LOVES his job! He blinked on my photo example once and then went straight for it. David is the sweetest guy (let me tape it on camera!). I didn't have to tell him much as he somehow figured it out (that required some deep trust on my end). I was concerned, because I have chubby cheeks and this cut was a risk for me. David handled everything great. He explained to me that my hair will take time to adjust to the light weight. He said (this is the best part) that it will take time for HIM and for me to learn about my hair, and he encouraged me to come back in a couple days to consult the result and adjust whatever doesn't feel right. I did come back 4 days later (although my haircut is 110% awesome) just to micro-trim my bangs and watch him style it again. No charge of course. If you go to your hair appointment as to a social event, then Dave is probably not your cup of tea, but if you have any general insecurities, and need an ubber precise work, then he's your man! I wish I could give him 10 stars. Charge was $80 for the cut and styling. Plus tip of course. They are commission based, so if you decide to go there make sure you do tip accordingly (my sister is a hairstylist living in Europe, so I know what commission means to these folks). Thank you Dave! Time and time again I hear it, and I think this is true: a great haircut can be transformative. My hair was in a sorry state and desperately in need of a cut. When I called Crew Salon to schedule an appointment the owner, Tom, answered the phone. I asked if my previous stylist was still working at Crew, she was not. Instead of trying to sell me on a new stylist at Crew, Tom informed me of where my previous stylist was working and the location and contact info for her. That kind of integrity is hard to find anywhere these days. It was a show-stopper. My preference was to come to Crew. Over the phone it was obvious that Tom was dedicated to the client experience and ultimate satisfaction with the results. So I made an appointment and came in on Thursday. There were clients and stylists of all ages and gender. Everyone was upbeat. The atmosphere was cool but not pretentious. It was a breath of fresh air from the rest of the LAB. There's a subtle, authentic cool in Crew Salon. A framed photo of Keith Morris (original singer of Black Flag) in an unassuming place on the wall. An art piece doing a riff on the album cover of License to Ill by Beastie Boys. And I thought the music was good. I'm an opinionated jerk about music. This is becoming a reoccurring detail for me in my reviews thus far, but almost the minute entered the salon, Galaxie 500 was playing! Intuitive as f*ck. I was seated for about 5 minutes before my appointment, as I had arrived a little early, and was offered a variety of refreshments by Tom. I declined. I don't know why I usually don't partake on the hospitality of others, but I was actually pretty parched. Tom poured me some water anyway and said "hydrate". To restate: intuitive and so focused on the overall experience. Coming in, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my hair. It was longer than it had been in years. Usually I bring in a photo for inspiration or guidance for the direction I want to go in but this time I was at a loss. My stylist was Jaz and she was easy to talk to, fun, affable in every sense. I decided to go with a cut that took care of the length issue, wasn't too intensive to maintain, and at the end of it all I felt like I had rediscovered another side of myself that I previously wasn't quite aware of and didn't know how to access, in so many words. Another detail that is important to include: if you feel like you need or want to get your hair done but are holding off because you don't want to have to make small talk or undertake a social outing that requires interacting with a stranger, that's totally cool. If you want to be quiet and get a great look without feeling uncomfortable, this is your place. If you don't want to have a conversation with anyone, you don't have to, it won't be weird. I promise. Like I said, every detail is considered and met. All ages, all styles, you're set. I had a couple of hair saloon people here do my hair about 7 years ago for about a year, and I never had any good style from these people. If anything, I usually just came out with pretty much a buzz cut. $45 to $55 for a piss poor style and cut, and $10 barber shops have given me hairstyles that have been lightyears better than these expensive salons. read more

I normally trim up my bangs myself, but today I felt like treating myself to a fancy bang trim. So while I was out shopping at The Lab, I stopped by to request a bang trim... WE ALL KNOW that it takes 5 mins tops to trim dry straight bangs. The girls at the front weren't too helpful...I walked up and said" hello, I am interested in getting these bangs trimmed they are out of control." Girl replies..."ummm do you have someone you normally go to cus if you did it would be free" and I said "No i don't you can just put me with whatever stylist I am sure they will do a great job and not too hard to mess these hairs up." She rummages through her appointment book and says "Ummm well you know it is going to be $15 right?" and I said "Yeah that is not the problem." She closes the book and says "I am sorry we are booked today and I can't get you in" Well after I dropped my money somewhere else I noticed through the window that 2 of the stylists were just standing there having a conversation doing NOTHING when they could have easily made $15 in that time and I would have probably even tipped way more than I should have b/c that is just how I am. So I went to Supercuts...was in and out in 5 minutes total and I ended giving them $15 (even though it costs $7) just based on principle. I adore Shanna. The boyfriend and I have been going to Crew Salon for about a year and a half now. It is true that he is more diligent in his haircuts than I am. I go in and out of phases where I think that one day my hair will magically resemble the models in the Victoria's Secret catalogs... erm, not gonna happen. I have had difficulty finding and trusting a stylist that will hear me as far as what I want style wise, that embodies the skills and creative insight to create a masterful coiffure. Shanna does just that. The BF has been going to Shanna from the get go and his hair always looks great after she cuts and styles. Admittedly, after well over 4 years, it isn't as often that I am in a mood to ravish him the minute he walks in the door the way I did in the "early stages" of our romance... At least, not before he takes the trash out. Ha. But after a visit with Shanna, he looks like the rock star he is and -- Commence ravishment!!! So finally, after much persuasion from him, I decided to pay visit to Shanna myself and I. COULDN'T. BE. HAPPIER. Shanna wields magic in her hands. A perfectionist in her cutting and styling...I love that she takes the time to make sure layers fall just right and that there is symmetry in all. She has an AMAZING personality. I'm writing this review about Lindsay, though I haven't gone to her recently she has done my hair since we were in high school. She did my hair while she was in beauty school, an assistant and finally as a stylist. Lindsay just has a knack for color and cut and style. It's in her blood. I remember back to prom, when we were nervous about how one of my friends would do my hair, instead of doing her own hair(what a great friend, right?) she did mine in amazing pinned up curls. I got endless compliments. When Lindsay first went to beauty school, I let her cut my hair but wouldn't let her use color. She eventually coaxed me into and I went through the best color of my life. She is meticulous and she won't stop doing your hair until it is perfect. Lindsay is one of those people who is born with this talent. Something you couldn't learn in school. I like to say its because of me that she is really good with high anxiety clients. SO if you freak out about your hair and get psycho and stressed out about it like me then she is the right stylist for you. Every time he'd cut my hair, he had too much going on & i never felt great about it. One faithful day I walked in expecting to get the usual, when they set me up with Shanna. I guess he didn't show or he had issues. All i know is he didn't work there anymore and Shanna was heaven sent. She gave me greatest haircut i've had in years! She walked me through it, made sure i was happy, and my hair was everything i wanted. I say let's be creative and she delivers! The girl is genius! I can't live without her head massages, its the best remedy for a shitty day! She's funny, witty, and simply gorgeous personality. I can't get enough. This review is specifically for David File, he is the mastermind of all haircuts! Honestly, I think he is a genius, he is so focused on cutting your hair, he won't even talk to you! Of course, if you ask him a question, he will answer you, but let the man focus! Whatever you are looking for, he will do 100% and more! I went to David because I saw my friend (with a crazy amount of hair) go to him, so when I decided to chop off my hair about 7+ inches, I thought, hey, why not, let's give David a shot. The price is pretty steep at $80 per haircut, but I think it's worth it. Some yelpers say that the receptionists are pretentious, I agree. But who cares about them? I am here to get a decent cut! It's located in the most unique and my most favorite spot in the OC, The Lab! I've been coming here for the past 8 years, since my undergrad days at UCI :) It is expensive for hair cuts, especially for guys! But what they do have are talented hair stylists/barbers that are very good at what they do. They have 3 levels of styles based on experience (seniority) and the level of skill that each stylist has. In addition, each level is more expensive than the other, and thus level 3 is basically the most expensive ($60 for men), and I have only done this level once, was NOT WORTH it at all! I usually do the 2nd level (aka key stylist) which is $50, and I have always been satisfied by their service and the way they style/cut my hair. I recommend this place if you have lots of money to spend, or you want to have a nice & fresh hair cut for a special event which is what I usually do. read more

David File is great for cuts, styling and color. He is wonderful at creating an edgy yet sophisticated look as well creating simple, clean, pretty or handsome styles. Will actually trim your hair and not take off six inches, unless of course you want him to. Communicates with you before and during the process. Quiet and meticulous but always friendly, you are sure to leave happy. In regards to color, he has some wonderful ideas for color options and will be candid with you about what's feasible and also what's healthiest for your hair. Great with platinum as well. If you are unhappy with anything, he is always willing to fix it and will make sure you are completely satisfied before you take off. Super sweet guy and really talented! :) He is one of two people I trust with my color and the only person I let cut or trim my hair. My best friend LOVES Angelo. He's a master stylist, friendly, and knowledgeable. Angelo doesn't do color, but he gives amazing haircuts, the kind people instantly compliment. And the kind that last after a shower's run through them. I've only gone once...and Lindsay did my hair. I just got a cut from her, but she also does color (including rainbow tones like pink, blue, and purple). She's very knowledgeable about what products your hair might need to improve its condition...but she's not a "typical pushy seller." Since I just asked for a trim, she didn't do anything drastic. But I definitely could see a major improvement at the end. Especially when she used layers to thin out my thick unruly hair. She gives her clients free bang trims. I think the set up at Crew is very confusing. The front door has a receptionist desk and several products on display...but no waiting area. They have to walk you all the way around to the back. 5 stars for Meghan: Meghan at the Crew is magic. I've been going to her for over a year now and every time I've walked out with a fabulous haircut. I'm not bragging because literally, the minute I walk out the door, I find myself being stopped by people telling me my hair looks amazing and where did I get my haircut? And I give them my usual schpiel about how Meghan is so fantastic as a hairstylist, etc...she's at the Crew Salon. It's 3-6 weeks later and people are still complimenting the haircut. See -- the thing is that I never have to tell her specifically what I want - I just give a little direction, how much I want cut off and VOILA! Right before my eyes, a new haircut is born. Meghan knows what I want and where she can take it - her translation of a classic haircut is amazing [I've got straight, fine, short Asian hair. I can't rock tons of layers but I can rock a sleek bob]. Just watch how she uses those shears! She's very precise. Plus, she's just a great person to be around and for one hour, I get to take a lovely little vacation at the Crew Salon and hang out with her while she snips snips the 'do away. Yelp saves the day (and my hair) again! After getting a drastic cut (long, way past the shoulders to a short bob) that I ended up not very happy with from another salon, I was in search of someone to correct my hair wrongs. I live in LA, but was in OC for the day doing some work and checked yelp to see if there were any recommended salons in the area. Crew Salon came up, and yippee for me they were open on a Sunday! I called and got an appointment for one hour later. Moment of serendipity - I had never heard of nor been to The Lap (or Camp across the street), but will definitely be back. These "anti-malls" were such a refreshing change and just had a fun, funky, laid back vibe. Think if Urban Outfitters took over a small outsdoor strip mall...and Urban is actually there! So before or after your haircut, you can shop at the hipster stores or grab a coffee and enjoy the outdoor weather. Anyway, back to the hair. My stylist was Lindsay, a super cute and super rad girl who I now absolutely adore. I've never been a chatty person in the chair, but felt comfortable talking with her as she worked her magic. We talked at first about what I wanted and what I didn't like about my current cut. She examined, made suggestions and then we were on our way. Considering that my hair was already just above shoulder length, but it's SUPER thick, she suggested to thin it out. Before she did anything, she would always let me know and ask if I was ok with it. She does most of her work with dry cuts, and does a phenomenal job. In the end, I walked out with a much more stylish do that I've been getting tons of compliments on. The best part is that even though it's short and layered, there is minimal styling required. I can just wash and go! No taming of flipping ends or runaway hair. THANK YOU Lindsay for saving me from hair hell and making the adjustment to short hair so fun! She mentioned the products that she was using on my hair, but didn't force them on me. So, I decided to donate my hair (10 inches) to locks of love. I have had long hair most of my adult life except once when I thought I would go "pixie". Let's just say that I was traumatized from cutting my hair for a long time. I live in LA, but my sister-in-law recommended Angelo the cutting magician! He cut off my ten inches and then went to town on my hair with such expertise and precision. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend him for hair cuts...he doesn't dabble in color so as you can imagine he's on his game for hair cuts. He took his time and was completely creative. I wanted that classic side part, not a new-skool close-to-the-skin high-fade one, just something elegant with a straight neck and gradual fade. It seems easy, but the classics can be hard to pull off right, especially on a dented, cow-licked, thick-maned head like mine. And Joel pulled it off. Bravo, Joel. He washed my hair, massaged the scalp, buzzed, cut - all that stuff, being cool the whole time, chatting me up in a genuine manner at some points, getting all into his work and being super-concentrated at other times. Did me up with a straight-razor, real clean-like, felt like lil' massage. Hot towel on the face like a mini-sauna. Buzzer-over-comb on the eyebrows. What more could you ask for from a human?! This is really for the Barbershop and not the salon but the barber shop doesn't appear to have it's own listing. Went there today, with 8 months of hair curling down the back of my neck. There was one customer ahead of me and a few came in while I was waiting. The table had a number of good magazines including a tattoo magazine and Details (which used to be a much better magazine than it is today). The music wasn't bad, mostly popular stuff on the indie side (I know I caught Metric in there for sure). The decor is cool, hip, a little industrial but with some eclectic lounge feel to it. The barber (I'm sorry bro, I totally forgot your name) warned me that his specialty wasn't long hair and I told him not to worry since it was coming off. He sat me down, we discussed the length and direction I wanted to go with it. Conversation was good and he dealt with my potty mouth. He was skilled with scissors and clippers and I got a good shave on the back of my neck when he was done. Came out with a killer pomp for what I would've for a terrible cut from Supercuts. Okay, it had been almost a year since I had gotten my hair cut. I know, ridiculous. It had gotten super long (down to my waist band) and it was time for a change. I had met Angelo through my BFF and had talked about making the cut many a time, but I was a scared chicken. Finally, a few days ago, I did it and I could not be happier! Angelo did a great job! I felt that he really understood what I wanted and my 'requirements', if you will. I have somewhat curly hair that I usually straighten, and I wanted a cut that could go both ways. I have never heard of this place before but now only go here because of one person, Max. I used to go to 18/8 off of Anton, that is where I first met max. Completely classy and professional, and the type of person that you can get lost in conversation with and completely forget why you showed up in the first place! When I tried to tell the guy that it's not how I wanted my hairstyle ala his way...he told me it's the only way to cut.... It's not.. I've been to barbers before and after and they each cut it the way that I prefer... I don't want a combover, I don't want the pompadour If you can, go to gods and heroes that place is legitimately better... If you want a cookie cutter haircut this is the place to go...
