Glad I finally tried Martha Dear after a couple months of anticipation. Honestly, not sure it was worth the hype though. Of course you have to preorder when it opens at noon, but I imagine some days are busier than others. Ordered a sampling of apps and a couple pizzas - Spanakopita - the filling is good but it wasn't the best I've ever had. I like it in the phyllo roll bc it's easier to eat but not a stand out. Smashed potato with pesto - this was delicious. Kinda random but very good. Feta with blood orange and olive - also delicious. A great combination of tart sweet and savory. Feels a bit elevated to fit in with a pizza dinner though? Halloumi and mushroom pizza - average. Had high hopes. The mushrooms were the most flavorful part of the pizza if you were hoping the halloumi would shine, but it was just a very dry pizza. Classic cheese pizza (basically a margherita) - better but still was dry and was underseasoned. The sauce wasn't a stand out, nor was the cheese. While you usually expect a Neapolitan cheese to have large pieces of mozz, they inexplicably went with mostly small shredded mozz with just a few larger pieces of mozz. Another reason this was also on the dryer side. The sourdough crust is tasty. But it's also chewier (not necessarily a bad thing) and drier. You'd think they would adjust by making sure there was enough sauce and cheese but maybe that's what they're going for? There are a few Neapolitan pizza places in DC, even just in NW, but this isn't one I would repeat. read more

Tried getting an order in for a few days! I had no idea when ordering opened for the day - either I missed that or they need to put that on their website. Sausage and pepper was the only thing still available with a pickup time 2 hours later than desired but I grabbed that quickly. Pickup only and the pie was ready on time so I just arrived at the table blocking the front door and was out of there in about 15 seconds. Very friendly staff got me my food. Got home and couldn't wait to try it. My wife tends to be a pizza snob and I wasn't sure what her reaction would be. She loved it and so did I. I thought the sourdough taste would be more noticeable but it was very subtle. Pie was jsut-right spicy and awesome. Wish I would have ordered two. Tried ordering early in the week on a whim and they were sold out an hour after opening for orders! Today was try #2 and I was hitting refresh at 11:55 like I was trying to order a PlayStation 5. Which was good because they apparently sold out in 8 minutes. Ordered a cheese for myself and the wife got the mushroom, spinach, and halloumi.. the cheese was excellent an handles itself easily compared to other Neapolitan pizza places in the area. But that mushroom, spinach, and halloumi. Holy hell, what a phenomenal combo. Great balance of the flavors and textures, I wanted my wife to hate it so I could eat her pizza (she's generally not a fan of sourdough). No such luck, she loved it too! read more

This is not only the best pizza in D.C., it's one of the best restaurants, full stop. The staff at Martha Dear are simply amazing - they are great at what they do, and they are kind - always. I've eaten here more than a dozen times and never had a dish that wasn't great - across the menu. If you stick to just the pizza, you are missing out! Also the best caesar salad in the city. Phemonial food.... Truly my best meal in years. The olives are a must try appetizer. Feta was good, bread was hard which I didn't expect but still great. Had both the white and sausage and peppers pizza and mixed the dipping sauces (the spicy with the white and the dill with the sausage). I was very excited to try Martha's after reading all the great reviews.. i did order ahead around noon and realized many items on the menu were already sold out. Luckily I was still able to make an order for an 8:30 pick up. I ordered the Classic and White pie which were still available on the menu. My favorite so far is the white pie although both have great flavors. Fresh quality ingredients (delicious), right amount of crunch. Unfortunately, both pies had a few burnt spots on the crust, eh, and doughy a bit raw in the middle. Hopefully it was just a bad batch. I would definitely give it another try considering everything else was great including customer service and timely pick up. read more

Cannot recommend Martha Dear enough! I dined in with my brother and had the best time. We came practically at opening on a Thursday night and were the first customers there. The space is small and intimate and you can watch them make your food. To a see a menu you scan a QR Code. They have Greek sodas, wine and some cocktails and keep your water glasses full. I ordered the white pie and my brother got a cheese margarita pizza with pepperonis on it. He very much enjoyed his just wished it was cheesier. I adored mine, there was some sharp Greek cheese on it that blended perfectly with the oil and garlic flavors. I have some saved for leftovers! We then both got the chocolate olive oil cake. Oh. My. God. I died and went to heaven! Super fluffy and light cake with a rich mouselike layer on top with a sprinkling of seat salt flakes. So so so delish. The Classic Cheese pizza from Martha Dear was perfectly okay. But since they allow themselves to make the process of ordering a pizza as easy as getting an appointment for a covid shot, and charge much more than Timber, I had high expectations and was disappointed. I only tried it once, so it's possible they were having a bad day, but they haven't mastered the baking process yet. The result was slightly undercooked dough, similar to many homemade pizzas when the crust is well done but below the cheese there's a thin, distinct gooey layer. A margherita is the true test for a pizza and a small 20$ pizza needs to be perfect as is, so I didn't want to pay extra for mozzarella, etc. I thought the option exists because the American customer has come to expect it, but that the pizza master wouldn't recommend it. After tasting their inoffensive pizza that was a little dry, I wondered if Marta offers the toppings as suggested improvements. It didn't help that the pizza was sitting by the outside door. It was pretty cold 6 min after the pick up time, unless of course it was sitting there longer. If in ordering a pizza my top criteria was helping a small local business, I would leave my money at Angelico pizza across the street. It's a pizzeria run by immigrants, a minority, which offers decent standard pizza at prices that more people in our neighborhood can afford, with unpretentious friendliness or 28$ canvas tote bags. My reason to support Martha Dear would be exceptional pizza. I hope they'll figure it out, but I don't think I'll engage in the competitive pizza ordering process anytime soon. Cozy English basement space up in Mt Pleasant. Would be perfect for a date or casual catch up with a friend, though space is tight so you'd want to make a reservation to be sure you have a spot. We sat at the bar as we had a last minute reservation change, and that worked well for my group of three. The advantage with the bar is that food is served quickly--you're sitting in front of the pizza oven--so proximity and a view are great. It's a small, curated menu with several vegetarian friendly options--always a bonus for me. I tried the mixed green salad with dill, scallions and a lemon vinaigrette and the white pie, which had mozzarella, lemon, garlic and two types of Greek cheese (kefalotyri and myzithra). Both dishes were very flavorful and generously portioned, though the salad had a bit too much dressing for me and I found the pizza a bit salty with all the cheeses--ordering a side of hot sauce helped bring it back into balance for me--but I loved the slight nuttiness of the sourdough crust and the nice char from the wood oven. We brought our own wine--was a $30 corkage fee--and overall found the service, food and ambiance to be very nice. read more

We love eating at Martha Dear. The pizza is consistently good and artfully made; if there are mistakes, I've seen the staff catch them before the food reaches the patrons and they remake it. Wow! We started with the Octopus Appetizer then Lamb hummus appetizer w awesome pita bread. Both gourmet fine dining amazing with rose wine and hubby had a Greek beer. We were really getting stuffed when the pizzas came so it was hard to enjoy them! Mark got the Mushroom Spinach Pie I got the Ramp pie and brought some of it home. OMG pizza was so good the next day cold! I could really appreciate Demitri's charred sourdough crust! And the unique flavors! Also...ORDER DESSERT: We split a piece of housemade baklava cheesecake. We were visiting from New York and got takeout from Martha Dear over the weekend. WOW WOW WOW, I will be thinking about the whipped feta and eggplant dip for a long time. The orange really popped. Caesar salad was a standout as well. I thought the flavors on everything were wonderful, and it was great to have a vegan pizza option too. Would love to try their pizza, but the ordering process is incredibly high-pressure and disappointing. Orders open at noon (a mere 17 minutes ago, as I am submitting this review), and I was ready on time, prepared for Friday to be particularly busy. Right at noon, a bunch of slots opened up, I chose one, and started filling my cart with my order. When I clicked next I was informed the time was no longer available. Not a big deal, selected a slot 15 minutes earlier, and had to re-select all the items in my order. Same thing happened again. I selected a third slot, re-chose my order, and was finally able to enter my credit card info. When I clicked "complete order", I was informed that the time was no longer available. At this point, only 8pm and later were available, too late for me. I understand that this problem is likely rooted in Toast's infrastructure, but it was very frustrating. I am not sure I'll attempt ordering again any time soon, as it feels like a toss-up whether I will actually get to place an order. The system privileges those who order fewer items and can type their payment in faster. Most reservation systems allow you to hold a time slot for a certain amount of time as you create your order, so it is baffling that the ordering for Martha Dear is not the same. read more

Lives up to the hype in that the pizzas are in fact delicious. Flavorful, not too oily, and the crust is delicious bread, rather than something to force yourself to eat. Shared the meat and white pie, along with the bean appetizer. All three were very good. But the big problem is that this is the third time in a row I've ordered, been given a time for pick-up, and then had to wait at least 20 minutes after my pick-up time to get my pizza. When I asked if they could just text me (I live 10 minutes away) to let me know the pick-up time had changed, they said that they don't have this capability. But they have my cell number and presumably have a cell phone - so this makes no sense. Essentially, they'd rather have me wait in the cold than take 15 seconds to shoot me a text. Pizza is such a wonderfully subjective food. And for me, this is a really good, quality, expensive 4-star pizza (not 5). The red sauce has a wonderful kick. The much-heralded sourdough crust is very yummy and adds a really nice and light component to it. I just don't think it has the crazy great ingredients as the Octopie at my dearly departed Tinos, or most anything from that wonderful madman Paulie Gee+his franchisees (grapes on a pie!). It is significantly more expensive and also not as good as Frankly Pizza, where the spinach pie just has an insane flavor profile with the caramelized onions and gruyere are just great. And while the sourdough is light, it also still comes out as a dense pie, and doesn't have the airy wonderfulness of Pupatella. Its closest comp--in terms of overall quality--is probably Inferno; a very different pie, but also a really good but not great place. So--all told, for a new restaurant--i've just compared it to some of the top places in the region! And it's not there. YET. But thanks for trying, Dear Martha. I felt that your service was excellent, and for a region that used to have Vace and 2Amys and not much else, I'm super glad you're around. read more
