I was in Montgomery, AL the last week of June 2018 and found this place doing an internet search and my taste buds thanked me so much that I think I ate everything before I got back to the house! I had rice, baked turkey & dressing, potato salad, pasta salad, and greens. I was glad we got there before what must have been the lunch crowd. I would stay and dine in if I ever get back to Montgomery, because it's decorated very nicely. My four star rating is because there was no blackberry cobbler available when I called on the day it was supposed to be there. Let's eat! After a day of touring Montgomery, our tour group settled on Martha's Place. We were seated quickly. Servers promptly grabbed drink orders - sweet tea is a must - and urged us to help ourselves to the buffet line. There were two stations open. The hot bar featured fried chicken, meat loaf, roast, country vegetables and sides, fried green tomatoes, biscuits, cornbread, and the like. The cold bar featured convenient desserts and a salad-making station. Since we arrived later in the dinner shift, the hot bar was decently stocked but the cold bar had been picked through. I picked up fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, greens, and fried green tomatoes. The macaroni and cheese could have used a bit more salting in the pasta, but they were plenty cheesy and held their texture. The mashed potatoes were very smooth. I also liked that the fried green tomatoes' cornmeal batter did not fall off when picked and eaten. Clearly, the fried chicken and greens won everything. The chicken was cooked through, juicy, and the breading had a great spice to it. I put just a dash of hot sauce for a little kick and it was excellent. The greens, thank God, were cooked with plenty of pork so they were salty, rich, and very flavorful. I was desperate for cobbler. There wasn't any on the bar. I hurriedly scoped up some classic banana pudding, which was okay. Thank goodness the cobbler was coming around. I wish they would have put a little more of it into the bowls. For the three or four bites left in there, I was definitely licking the fork clean. Martha's Place goes to show that the interior of the restaurant doesn't need to be super fancy for you to enjoy a great meal. read more

Talk about a jewel. Martha herself cooks, serves, and explains the journey that go her to where she is. She is fabulous. She even wrote a book about it and explained her circuitous but purposeful path, from being a down and out survivor to being a successful businesswoman and author. Definitely someone who deserves a wholesome hug. Ambience. OK. So its in a strip mall and that means drop ceiling tiles and tile floors-- former helps and latter hurts with acoustics. I shoved my Bose earplugs in until they were almost stuck into my brain and couldn't care less. The wafting smell of fried chicken was all i needed to home myself to the food. Decor was clean and neater but its not the most fancy chairs and tables--sans table cloths. The service was buffet, which essentially means you can try everything and then manifest the disappointment for your caloric poor decisions by going up yet again, again and again or just throw in the white towel altogether and have some toothsome and smooth banana pudding or homemade brownies. For the nut, berry and salad types-- no worries. Plenty of salads and vegetables that were just fine. For these folks, the baked chicken won't disappoint and there are plenty of vegetables with perfect seasoning and steamed to perfection. For those on the other side of the spectrum, wow will you be happy. Nothing was disappointing. There were a few protuberant types strewn out on the nearby outdoor benches--toothpick in mouth, exhaling incantations of disbelief they ate so much. There could be no better endorsement. TIP: Do NOT leave without tasting the fried chicken. It's so crispy, moist and flavorful, that you can't help but feel your coronary arteries calling out for mercy. It's worth the hour or two it might take off the back end of your longevity. read more

I was in Montgomery for a military training trip and I ran across this restaurant. Boy this is a hidden gem. The ambience was very nice the customer service was very pleasing and the food was tasty. I had the fried chicken and I have to say that this was some of the best fried chicken I've had in a while. The owner, Ms Martha took the time to visit each table to a sure that everyone had a pleasant experience. We were able to sit down and talk to her and learn more about her story. No one could have been more thrilled than me, so we made plans to include a visit to her new location while on our road trip to Dallas. We called ahead a week prior to make sure Martha would be there on Thursday (July 5th), and the hostess who answered the phone said "yes". However, she evidently did not seem to remember they would be closed on July 4th aw well as the day after. Lucky for us we called to double check and didn't loose time driving. I was highly disappointed, but rearranged our plans to visit on our way back home instead. 2 weeks and 2,300 miles later, we finally walked through the doors of Martha's Place. Although we came to eat, our main objective was to see Martha in her new digs and catch up on the last 7 years since we first met. The restaurant itself lost a little of it's charm. It's no longer in an older home in a residential neighborhood, but in a shiny new location in a small shopping village. Another change is it's now buffet style, with a good selection of soul food favorites. As far as the food, those with high Yelp standards may give it mixed reviews. However, those who like home style buffet cooking will be much more forgiving. It wasn't as good as I remembered (overall a 3 out of 5), but I really didn't care. Martha was really the main attraction for me. Her story of success has been highlighted in several local newspapers articles and national magazines neatly framed on her restaurant walls. I would say Martha's is a top contender of selections of soul food. The restaurant was not anything fancy, the decor is comfortable-then again, I guess its all about the food. The buffet items vary per day, so be sure to check the website or call ahead. For today's delight: green beans, corn pudding, cheesy potatoes, really good fried okra, collards, bomb fried fish & no soul food meal is complete without cornbread & banana pudding for dessert! We washed it all down with Arnold Palmers. It was all just so good. One more bite and I would've gone into complete comatose. If you're ever in town, make the trek to Martha's Place. Management you might want to consider popping in on your staff from time to time! Even with the best food in Montgomery, a staff like this can leave a bad after taste. Staff: The 2 star review is based on staff interaction! Online it lists that they are open from 11:00-20:00. When I arrived at 14:35, I asked for the buffet for one diner and was rudely told that they close at 15:00 (3 o'clock), so I'd have to do a take out tray. I let the receptionist know the discrepancy in hours online and she just shrugged and frowned. After I'd started filling my to-go tray, another couple came in and were seated for the buffet. I went to that waiter and she rudely stated that they were no longer sitting guests again despite what I'd just witnessed, so I paid for my tray and left. First trip to Alabama and found ourselves here for lunch one day with a group of 6. I can't believe the amazing meal we got for $9 a person. The restaurant is so well cared for and way more beautiful than any buffet i've ever seen. In fact, i'm usually not a buffet person at all but you can tell how much Martha and her staff care about this place, its patrons and the food they are putting out. Loved being able to try all of my usual comfort food favorites along with trying some new ones. That fried chicken was amazing but the baked chicken was the surprise winner (for me) for the day. Well I did my first visit for mother's day weekend 2018-CHILE-the fish was hot, the chicken was juicy, the veggies were seasoned well-Ok how about I took my 4 sisters and how about we will be making Martha's our own special weekend buffet retreat. It may be a little crowded around the only buffet bar but there is plenty of seating in this nice clean establishment-maybe there should be 2 cashiers because it's always crowded and the drink should be included in the meal as well. I only know the broad strokes of Martha Hawkins rise to entrepreneurial success, but there's no denying her restaurant was a piece of Montgomery history. The new location trades some of that Downtown charm for far east room to grow, but still with a good bit of the down home feel you look for in a place serving Southern food. Or is it soul food? After eating a small mountain's worth of collard greens, I'm still not sure I know the difference, but I'm willing to continue working to solve the puzzle. A lot of Southern places are served cafeteria-style, which I've always defined as "like a buffet, but with people watching over it to make sure the quality's good." Martha's is a straight-up buffet, which doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of food is any less - though the impersonal effect it creates might leave that impression. On the other hand, I can eat as much collards as I want, which turns out to be a lot. The buffet is pretty focussed, anyway, so it's not like anything lasts long enough to become unappetizing. Even the fried chicken and fish somehow, incongruously, and against all odds, remains crisp and tasty, as you would expect from a Montgomery restaurant that specializes in such things. Really, I tried most of what Martha had going on the day of my visit, and I found nary a fault in anything I tried. If anything, Martha's, as that anomaly as the Southern cafeteria line without the cafeteria, deserves points for being able to preserve what presumably made her notorious for so long while transitioning to the new format. read more
