I have been going to this place for several years now and have been pleased, but the customer service has definitely gone down. I came on yelp to see if other people noticed the same thing. The older woman at the counter is pretty rude to people. I noticed because I was waiting there for awhile. I heard one of the guys there embarrass a man who went in to get a coat fixed that was obviously too large for him. They asked him in a mocking way why he even bought it, was it on sale, was it the only coat he could buy, and finally ended up telling him to return it because it would be expensive to fix. He looked pretty embarrassed because everyone there heard him basically get made fun of. Then after trying everything on, I was told my 8 pieces, mostly pants to be shortened, would be $320 and that I needed to pay upfront. I find this to be very strange to pay upfront for a service before it is even done. One lady was told $45 for a dress, then when she complained, they changed it to $15! The older lady with a lot of makeup at the counter looked at her like she was such a bother. They truly give the impression that customers are the uninvited guests in their home. I am ready to try a new place. They are too arrogant here, and I know there are other places who can help me, not barter for prices, and not look down on customers who voice a concern. read more

I came here looking for an easy, inexpensive way to alter a bridesmaid dress and have left with a wonderful dress, but a bad experience. When I first arrived I was told that my dress had to be taken out with a tie-up corset back, which I definitely anticipated because of the beadwork (my chest is just a few inches too big for the zipper). But I was sent to go get fabric myself to a store located downtown and very much not convenient. I really wasn't sure what I was supposed to buy, but I went anyway and spent a good amount of money and time doing so. When I came back I saw a different gentleman who essentially told me the fabric was pointless and he could just use some of the fabric from the original dress. Which is great, but annoying that I had been given opposite instructions beforehand. At the time of pickup I was able to try my dress on and the work was really nice, but it was pretty much impossible to do a lace up by yourself, and no one was there to help me. So I'm still hoping it will look okay, but no one was all that friendly or took the time to make sure everything fit well. When I checked out the price I paid was quite literally double what I was originally quoted (to which the lady said "that's why it's an estimate") even after I was sent downtown to buy unneeded material. And as a final note on the experience, she automatically ran my card as credit without asking if it was debt (you get a discount for debt...also my card says Debit) and when I mentioned it, she said " oh well, I already ran it. " Overall I'm just really disappointed because I rarely get things altered and this experience ended up costing almost just as much as the original dress. I felt very poorly treated compared to the men I saw in there with their suits getting tailored, so I doubt I will be coming back. read more

Martin Tailors, where have you been all my life? As a petite (5'1") girl with proportions that just don't seem to fit the norm, I find myself wishing for a little hem here, a nip and tuck there on my clothes. About 10 months ago, before my mom's wedding, I found Martin Tailors on yelp and gave them a try for my bridesmaid dress and some pant hems. Since then, I've gone back over and over and over to have pant waists taken in and hems let in/out. Never have I been disappointed. I always see them doing much more complex alterations such as tailoring suits to fit (men's and women's). In case you haven't been, here's how it works. As you walk in, head toward the back where the change rooms are with your items. Change into your first piece, exit the change room and wait your turn for one of the tailors. (There are usually 2 or 3 tailors working their a***** off when I go in). Explain what you want done, they mark it and take your personal info. Repeat until they have marked/pinned all of your pieces. Take them to the register and someone will take them to the sewing area for you. Turnaround time is less than a week and they will text you when your items are ready. Pay when you pick up! read more

I had a bad experience. I went in to have my custom dress shirt tailored. They needed to give my chest a bit more breathing room so they moved the buttons out. The job was butchered. By the time I got to work, 1 button had already fallen off. By the end of the day, I was missing 3 buttons. At that point, I found a t-shirt I could wear for the rest of the day, but I felt pretty ridiculous. The service was friendly and fast, but doesn't make up for the poor workmanship. read more

Family owned, family run and the family has lived in the area for as long as the business has been there, maybe even longer. Martin Tailors has been opened since 1957 and have built a very loyal customer base. I have only been coming here for about 5 years but ever time I'm here the people that come through, Martin Tailors treats them as though they are a part of their family. Service is prompt and courteous. I bring all my shirts to get fitted, suits, and pants. If you need a simple hem they can have it for you while you wait. They do a great job on jeans as well. Do not be afraid to bring those designer jeans here, they can hem those jeans using the original hem. My wife has been trying to convince me to get some shirts made for me by these guys, we'll see. All that yoga I've been doing has left my clothes hanging off my petite frame. NOT TO WORRY - MARTIN TAILORS TO THE RESCUE! If you don't want to feel like a part on an assembly line, don't go after work or on the weekend. You'll be directed to one of many dressing rooms and then come out and stand in line waiting to be pinned up and pushed off (in the nicest way possible!). They are fast, for sure. Why not 5 stars? I was extremely pleased with my dress alterations - fit like a glove. I did have to suggest to the guy pinning me up to pull the shoulders up about a half an inch to make for a better fit. I would prefer if they made suggestions, so if you're scared to speak up about your own alterations, it might be a bit intimidating. Secondly, my fiance took four suits in, and his alterations were very inconsistent. I found the suits that were pinned by the guy who did my dress came out awesome, the ones done by the other guy weren't all that good. In fact, I think his pants came out a bit too snug and slightly too short, but hey I'm no expert. Finally, pricing. I don't mind paying for excellent work, but I think $50 to tailor one dress and nearly $700 for 4 suits + 1 jacket definitely deserves a heads up. If you're not a baller, be sure to ask for a price quote before leaving your threads. If they say they will text you with a quote, that probably won't happen, hence the jaw-drop when I went to pick up the fiance's suits and they rang up to $657! read more

Based on yelp reviews, of course, I brought 23 pieces here to be altered. It's not all fun and games being a small person. I thought they would hate me for sure, bringing in this many items 30 minutes before closing, but much to my surprise they were extremely helpful and very patient with me. They were prompt in completing my order, not to mention they did a fantastic job. I now have a whole new work wardrobe. Amazing! I had a terrible experience at Martin Tailors after a few mediocre experiences. I dropped my jeans off for a simple job: a patch on the knee and a patch on the back pocket. When I came to pick up the jeans the next week, the girl who brought them out immediately apologized "I'm so sorry, this patch is terrible. I just talked to Martin and he said we'll redo it." They told me to pick up my jeans and then when I arrived they told me they weren't ready. Strike 1. When I came back the next week to pick up the re-patched jeans, they had only patched the knee but not the pocket. So I had to leave the jeans with them yet again so that they could finish patching the pocket. I finally was able to pick them up the following week - over 3 weeks since I dropped them off for 2 simple patches - and the jeans were finally ready. When I picked them up, there was no apology for the delay. Every time I've been to Martin's, the service has been curt, and this day it was outright rude. I do not at all recommend Martin Tailors. read more

Due to my height, I have to have every dress/pair of paints I purchase altered. So finding a good tailor/seamstress is high on my priority list. I noticed good reviews of this place on yelp and since it is only 2 streets away from my place I decided to give it a try. I came for the first time after work around 5:30. The place was packed full of people needing alterations, but it didn't really feel crowded. Most patrons were older and the tailors knew them by name- a good sign. I had a bridesmaid dress that was way to long for my 5 foot frame and needed to be hemmed. Even though there was a full house, the service was personal and speedy. The guy doing my measurements also made some suggestions as to how to tweak the dress to make it more flattering. I went along with his suggestions and it turned out great. My dress was ready in less than a week, which is much faster than I am used to having my garments finished. It was also cheaper than many other places I have tried. All in all, I will have to agree with my fellow yelpers and I am sure to return. read more

What else can I say that hasn't already been said. The staff is extremely gracious and often times Martin himself comes out to take care of you. Turn around on your garments is lightening fast - I had to have a pair of pants repaired on Monday for a dinner on Thursday and they called me on Tuesday to come pick them up. The prices are great so make sure they are on your list of places to stop after you conquer your 2010 resolutions. RUINED my $150 BCBG dress by cutting off so much fabric that they turned it into a shirt. When I brought in my dress, I had already safety pinned the dress to indicate where the dress should be hemmed - approx 3 inches. I asked if that was okay (as I usually tried it on in the store) that I just wanted it hemmed to where the safety pin was, and the person assured me it would be. When I went to pick it up, I was shocked, and then was informed that they never guarantee work that you pin yourself. I immediately said if it was a difference of 1-2 inches, sure... but the difference here is an extra 6 inches! Now, I understand mistakes happen (as much as I don't like to be that unfortunate person), but it's all about how you fix the problem. To add insult to injury, they asked me to wait, went to the back, and came back with a 2 inch piece of fabric from my dress and said, "This is all we cut off." What are you trying to prove? You turned my dress into a shirt by chopping off almost a foot of fabric, and you're going to come back with a 2 inch piece of fabric (which you could have cut in half while you're in the back, or made several cuts) and then tell me that's all you took off?! WOW! They never once offered to give me back what I paid for the alterations, so now I'm out $170 for BOTH the alteration and the dress. NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN!!! read more

This place used to be one of the best around, but recently it has really fallen off in the quality and service department. I took a few shirts here to get shortened a bit, and then about 6 shirts to get the elbows patched up due to small tears/holes that had been ripped in them. They did measurements on the shirts and I asked the price and they said they couldn't tell me until I came back. It's a bit ridiculous to do a service for someone and then tell them the price when they return. The price they tried to charge me for two shirts being tailored and 6 shirts being patched was so high I should have just bought new shirts. The most frustrating part is out of the 6 shirts I had patched, 4 of them retore within a week. The patches were very small and ineffective, and it seembed obvious they didn't even try to do a quality job on those. Will be finding a new tailor from here on out read more

Not a good first (or last) experience. Took some webbing in to be sewn to a footprint for a tent. I asked what the price would be and was told $35. I told him I was going to hold off because I can buy a ready-made footprint for $25. He said "don't worry, I'll take care of you." I ended up going there 4 times before the work was complete and was charged over $70!! I never would have had them do the work if I knew I'd be charged that much. If you decide to try these guys, make sure they provide a firm price for the work. read more

It's rare for me to venture outside of a restaurant review, but the work the team at Martin Tailors does is so top-notch that it would be a disservice to NOT let the world (or Yelp! world at least) know about their incredible service. The Hernandez family has been tailoring for over 50 years, and in Houston since 1970, and they know they're stuff. I've brought everything to these guys for the past 3 years - shirts, jackets, pants, etc. - and everything has come out great. It's hard to place a value on a perfectly fitting shirt, but at Martin Tailors they have reasonable rates across-the-board, and the quality is definitely worth it. On the rare occasion that something hasn't fit "just right" (not due to their work, just my own picky preferences), they are always willing to adjust it to get it right. I definitely recommend giving them a few days to work their magic on your attire (you can't rush a work of fabric-based art, right?) but if you need it day-of, they do same-day service as well at a slightly higher premium. My ONLY issue is - now that I've moved to San Francisco - where am I going to go to get my tailoring done!? There's only one Martin Tailors, and that's the shop in Houston that's been making Texans snazzy for over 40 years, and hopefully for years to come. Looks like I'll just have to find me a new tailor. In a PANIC, I came to Martins last night 15 minutes before closing with tears in my eyes and two white dresses that swallowed me. Our flight home for our engagement party is TODAY at 8p.. less than 24 hours before leaving, The tailors at martins TRANSFORMED my dresses to fit me like a glove. I had an interview and knew I had to look sharp(er than I always look). Got my pants rush tailored, waist and length. I thought it looked a little baggy and they fixed it. Total time probably only took 20-30 mins. I also asked the guy to do me a solid and tie my tie for me because I suck, and he tied it like a pro. And then he told me his grandfather taught him how to tie it like that, and also used to make suits for the Chicago mob. #HOP Anyway, I'm sold. If he had told me that story a little earlier, I probably would have just gone home and brought everything I needed tailored here. (Favorite movie: Goodfellas). Wasn't cheap, but wasn't the shit I normally get here in SL - the place by Shipley's - F them - and I like the vibe of the place overall. Will be back for sure. Martin Tailors provide expert level alterations. I've been going to them for 5+ years. I dropped off some slacks on a Sunday, that needed to be taken in at the waist, and they were ready for pickup the following Wednesday. My slacks now fit perfectly. They provide excellent customer service and even text you when your items are ready for pickup. They are reasonably priced and pay the upmost attention to detail in the alterations you wish to make. read more

Before I went to Martin Tailors, I never went to the same tailor twice. This was mainly because I had no reason (good or bad) to go back to anyone in particular. When I first walked into Martin Tailors, it was pretty crowded. I was pleasantly surprised with the staffs ability to both multi-task and provide personal attention to me while getting fitted. The last time I went in, I got a pair of jeans measured in the morning and then picked it up after work. The tailor I had gone to since I was in college retired (how could you retire on me!?). She wanted to spend more time with her family. What's a girl to do? Yelp it of course! My faithful fellow yelpers recommended this local tailor. I won't lie, I was a bit apprehensive the first time I pulled up but they quickly put me at ease. This place is a well oiled machine. You go into a dressing room, change, and you stand in line as someone helps measure, pin, and/or chalk you up. You can see through to the back where employees are furiously working to make sure each garment is tailed to your needs. They've got these pretty cool devices that tag your clothing with your name and number. And they TEXT you when it's ready! More often than not it's always ready early (so refreshing!!). The prices are a little higher than what I had been paying previously, but it's right off Washington and is so convenient. And the prices do seem to vary -- for example, I can go in to get jeans hemmed, once it'll cost $15 and another time it'll cost $18. They really do a great job. Leave the tag they put on and try the clothes on at home. If you aren't satisfied, bring it back (with the tag still on) and they'll tailor it until you're happy! I have been bringing all of my alteration work here for 5 years and have never been disappointed. I recently brought them a $70 Calvin Klein eBay suit and they made it fit like a $700 suit. All of my pant and coat alterations & finishings have withstood the test of time. I've had lots of pants hemmed here, the hems have held and once I came in with pants with the hem lost (stitches had come out, not their stitches) and they fixed them on the spot. They will go with as long as you will let them, though, so DO NOT wear higher heels that what you plan to wear when you try them on. Had some dress straps shortened, only simple things like that. I am planning to take in a bustier that is a 4 and I am a 0 (whatever that size is anymore!) so we will see. My complaints are: I don't know how long their work normally takes because they often "forget" to text when they are finished, but most of the time, they give me a date of 4-5 days later which is kind of a long time. The prices are a little steep; I don't think a pants hem should be more than 10$ since it is about 10 minutes worth of work, including the pinning time. That said, I sure don't want to take my time to hem them. read more

About three years ago my Taylor retired. The world didn't end, so to speak, but sure did got complicated in the wardrobe deprtment. Being pettit and in love with fashion is not always a good combination. Luckily my friend who shares the same intrests have been going to Martin Taylors for decades ( before it was well knowen). When I first walked in to the shop, I have noticed the firsthand necessities all over... shoehorns hanged next to dressing rooms, shoes with every posible hill hight available , mirrows, steps seating stools next to each one of the mirrors... this shop looks does not have glamour of modern society, but only the best of the taylor shops charming functionality. I started with simple order of 6 pairs of dennims to be aulterd to my preference, they they turned out grate. Going to ask them to make a dress next time. Im sure it will be grate. read more

I'm a believer! They fixed my jacket and the botched job that had been performed by a previous tailor... ahem! They altered a vintage dress for me perfectly and they patched some jeans for me and I can't even tell there was ever a tear. I think its funny how they always tell me they will text me when its ready but never really do... but hey, if thats my only complaint then I'm a happy customer! The little unassuming building on the corner of Shephard and Feagan St. I have to say, I had a great experience. The staff was not overly nice, but I did not have anyone treat me with any disrespect. I walked in they asked if I was picking up or needing help. I was in there maybe 5 minutes from the time I walked in until I walked out. I like that they text you when your clothes are ready. I dont even think it took twenty- four hours to hem my jeans. It was a bit expensive, but they did great work and I am happy. They only negative comment I have is that I was told I had to pay before not after I recieved my jeans. When I went in the next day to pick my jeans up, they asked the guy in front of me if he wanted to pay now or later. I had a twenty doller fix, his was over one hundred. Why would I have to pay ahead when his was clearly more expensive than mine? Its not that big of a deal, but I think if you want to create loyality among new customers, I would suggest having the same rules for everyone. read more

I found them searching for a tailor online. I needed some custom work done to my shirt. I explained to them what I needed. He took me to the back and made sure he knew what I was talking about. They exceeded my expectations. I brought five shirts in to have the same work done. When I picked them up they even color matched them. I didn't even ask them. Again, exceeded my expectations. If I ever need any work done on my clothing I'm coming back here. Great job guys! read more
