She's incredibly kind and patient, and took the time to do two different fittings for my bridesmaid dress when other tailors have not been so generous. My wife and life partner loves beautiful clothes and footwear. The only material things she loves more are beautiful clothes that fit her perfectly. Yesterday, as I was unhappily "doing something close to nothing the same thing as the day before", she asked me to go with her to a shop for alterations of her latest purchases. "Which one?" I asked. She suggested local dry cleaners. I said, "I don't think that is a good idea. What will happen if they ruin the clothes. When will the work be done?" So, happy to have something to do that was "something close to nothing but different than the day before." (Yeah. I am a fan of Prince), I logged onto Yelp and quickly read Mrs. Nhu's reviews and suggested we go to her storefront (near Trader Joe's on S. Shepherd) It is nestled in a small strip mall with the TokTok Thai Massage, a barber shop and a vintage clothes store. I personally like the mix because it is a much smaller version of Montrose without the thick cloud of millennial hipster smug that I find uh. . . . or more correctly, ugghh. Mrs. Nhu greeted us at the door. She and her new customer immediately hit it off. Knowing I might prompt some laughter because I am often a punchline for people I don't want to know, I retreated to my portable man cave in the parking lot, turned on NPR and opened up an uncompleted Saturday New York Times Crossword. My bride emerged one half hour later. Very pleased with her choice. Mrs. Nhu is very experienced, works quickly, lets her customers try on the altered clothing. I cannot say enough good things about Nhu!!! She worked miracles on my bridal gown. I didn't have an emotional "Say Yes to the Dress" moment when I originally bought my wedding dress -- but I teared up with joy during my final fitting with Nhu. I brought in a difficult piece: an off-the-rack sample that was several sizes too big. She took in the entire fit-and-flare dress (which had a boned corset and intricate detailing), added a French bustle (adding extra attachment points for different looks), and closed the plunging neckline. My dress fit like a glove and looked like it was custom-made for me, which it basically was. Beyond this, Nhu is lovely. She gave me her expert opinion, didn't try to over-charge us or cut corners, patiently talked to my mom over the phone, and handled our pickiness with grace. Both times the dress was too big prior to alterations. For my wedding dress, I was pretty stressed as I bought a dress off the rack from out of state (which was 2 sizes too big, with intricate lace work on the bodice). I probably shouldn't have jumped the gun and submitted my rating until after the day of the wedding, because the alterations proved to be subpar. My dress was dual layered and had a fabric underlay with a lace top layer, and so multiple bustles needed to be added- a total of 6. The day of the wedding, it took 5 people about half an hour to 45 minutes to locate the bustles on the dress, FOUR of which popped off during the reception. The bustle loops were too dainty and thin to hold the weight of the fabrics on my dress. In the end, safety pins proved to help, but at what cost? $400 for bustles that didn't bustle. read more

I asked for a quote first and it is a little more on the expensive side. However, the service and end result was worth it! I had brought in my shoes to try on with the dress and Nhu meticulously cut away the 5 layers of tulle. She was friendly and professional! The return time of my dress was 2 weeks. She's really sweet! I took my wedding gown ( mermaid style) to her about a month ago. Dress was due for pick up/ first fitting last Saturday. When I tried it on last Saturday I felt the dress was a bit shy of perfect! She pinned it and agreed to work on it again. Wednesday, I went back and this time my dress was a disaster! This place is AMAZING!!! I am an OCD dresser when it comes to my work wardrobe. I love collecting sports coats, suits, and ties. I have brought Nhu at least half of my dresswear wardrobe and they have made everything look tailor-made. The quality of the work is perfectly on point, and Nhu is an amazing tailor! Outside of the quality of product they are very friendly and courteous. This place is always packed with brides from the area, which we know are not easy to please, and they are always walking out happy. Highly recommend if you want good results. They needed a lot of work done as they never fit well and I had lost some weight. This is the work she did: Jacket waist was taken in, jacket length shortened, shoulders taken in, sleeve shortened and tapered; pant waist taken in, pleats removed, cuffs removed, and sleeve tapered. She had my clothes pinned up in 5 minutes for all of those adjustments and had the work done within 3 days. It fits perfectly and looks great. This lady is seriously making a killing off of people naive enough to pay for her overpriced services. But I suppose since the demand is there, she keeps her prices inflated. Case in point; I wanted to make a simple, sleeveless dress with material I purchased on my own. For this, she quoted $500 claiming custom made clothes are expensive. This is not my first, or tenth time making custom clothing so I am aware it can be pricey, but not outrageous (especially given the style requested). I went elsewhere and for the same style, I was quoted $100 by a male tailor a friend suggested. The tailor had numerous sytles waiting for pick up and the ones he showed me were tastefully done. He also lines most of his work at no extra cost. My friend even sent me a picture of the dress he made for her and it was very figure-flattering. Nhu might be good at what she does but this is Houston... there are other people who can replicate or outdo what she does for a fraction of the cost... including alterations. You just have to be willing to drive out of this section of the central Houston bubble. BTW, she wasn't at all "nice" as some people have mentioned. She's probably nice to the people who pay for her services, or people who fit a certain profile. read more

I am exceptionally choosy when it comes to getting my clothes fitted because I am considered small even by Korean standards. I won't share with y'all the horrible experiences I've had walking out of places like MW as a teenager with a "tailored" clown suit. I miss my tailor in Philly, and so a shameless plug for Royal Custom Tailor in center city. Nhu has a gift for faces, not to mention a sharp eye and skilled hands. I think that more than anything, what makes her so darn good at her job is that she seems to never forget her client. I've seen dozens of people come in and she remembers their tailoring preferences and is able to pick up the conversation with them exactly where it left off. It's hard to describe, but she has a motherly vibe. You know she's going to do a good job without question, but you should also know that she won't repeat any mistakes more than once or twice. Prices here are completely reasonable for the level of work. I've had dozens of work shirts and pants, and even an ugly suit from my teenage years transformed from formless blobs into sharp, second skins. She has a very reasonable policy for any rework that you need. I also appreciate the input she has to provide. Sometimes when you aren't quite sure what the best fit is, a good tailor like Nhu can step in and help shape your personal style. Nhu is a neighborhood staple, the best kind of small business owner who recognizes that people, not clothes, are her business. Working with her never feels like a transaction, but more a relationship between neighbors. If you're like me and value the quality of interaction as much as the product you receive, know that you will not be disappointed. You get you pay for. Nhu's is certainly not cheap. If you go, expect to pay a lot. That said, I can say without a doubt, she has done the best work out of any tailor I have gone to in the city. I've tried about four tailors. I'll admit, I'm a bit of a perfectionist. All of the other tailor's I have tried have been ok, but not perfect. Nhu, has always nailed her work. Amazing attention to detail. My clothes come out fitting exactly how I want them, and the attention to detail, and quality of work like the thread she uses, stitch, etc is top notch. For very simple things like hemming pants, etc I use a cheaper tailor near my house.
