My friend got the chicken salad sandwich and equally their plate looked the same both great entrees, I will go out of my way to pass through here again so I can eat here again. The place has a coffee shop calm quiet feel to it and very clean. Very nice place if you are in the area. It's a small town, so it a small town feel to the place. I'm from Martindale, I'm just so happy that I can go home and enjoy a meal and a beer downtown, where I used to run around and cause chaos as a youth. The menu looks pretty interesting, haven't tried any of the food yet, but we will. I really enjoy just being able to chill and have a beer. Looking forward to returning time after time. The staff is friendly, the place is super small, but plenty of room outside, on the front, or even across the street, where they have live music and other events. read more

We stopped in on a weekend drive during Spring and were attracted by the crowd sitting outside and across the street where there are picnic tables. The inside is quite small, but very attractively remodeled in a historic building right in the center of Martindale. I had the Brisket Burger which apparently featured BBQ brisket from one of the famed Lockhart pit masters. It looked exactly like a hamburger, but was better than the best hamburger I ever ate--which is saying a lot since I am pretty long in the tooth. I am uploading a photo of its cross-section. My wife had the Chicken Banhmi. It was a bit too spicy for her, but the bite I had tasted pretty good. All-in-all, this might be the "jewel of Martindale" and close enough to Austin to justify a trip out for some variety. Traffic and parking were not a problem. While you're in the area, take the road down the steep embankment and across a wood bridge over the pristine San Marcos River. The sign says "Private," but that should be read as "dead-end" rather than "don't try this." It's right down the street from the restaurant. read more

Nice little spot with pretty good food, best interior, nice folks working there, and general good vibes. The inside is kind of narrow and can be crowded if it's a happening time, like when we stopped in. I dig the brick and plants. Everyone liked their food. Above average but not great or amazing or incredibly memorable. Just solid and worth a second visit if you're in quaint, cute little Martindale. I believe I had an adult grilled cheese? Hope I'm not confusing this meal with another - lulz - but everything else I said definitely applies to this place. Not a ton of choices right along Martindale's little main drag, so it's nice that this is a good one. A nice little place in downtown Martindale. Very friendly, welcoming owners. Love their piped in music and decor. Menu is limited but everything we got , namely chicken bahnmi, fancy grilled cheese and pulled pork tacos were really good. They have live music on certain nights, Friday -Sunday(I think). Four of us had brunch at the cafe today. I've read all the reviews of how welcoming and friendly they are, but honestly that was not our experience. Wondering if the fact that we're seniors had anything to do with it. That's all we could come up with, since lots of other customers were being served with a smile and they weren't busy. Stopped in for breakfast on a weekday in June and so glad we did. We were the only ones there at the time so service was quick but not microwaved, thank goodness. I had the Sweet Avo Toast. Bread was good and crusty and the balsamic strawberry feta made such a nice combo. Hub got the breakfast sandwich and it was huge! We'll definitely be back when coming thru Martindale. Looks like they are ramping up the "downtown" area so I imagine things will get busier. They have live music on Thursday-Saturday nights too. read more

If you're looking for a small town get away from the big city with live music and access to the San Marcos river this spot is a great focal point for a day in the "country" They have good food, excellent coffee, local beer and wine on tap. Live music on some evenings so be sure to call ahead or check their social media for what's playing. The owners are also the proprietors they are inviting and informed. If you arrive too early for the live music and are looking for something to do without driving there's a park just two blocks away. There's a short path and a nice spot in the river for a dip. If you can arrange transportation drop your tube in the water to float. We had gone early to jump in the river and wished we could get a shower - the River Cafe has a shower in their bathroom so we asked to use it and were invited to go ahead. Excellent place with a local small town feel, good food, great people - bottom line is we'll be back. read more

I have wanted to try this place for a while. We decided to drive in from San Marcos for brunch on Mother's Day. The website said they closed at 3:00pm. We knew we couldn't get there until 2:30, so we called right before we left to ask if that was ok. The woman on the phone said, sure, come on out. We got there at 2:25 and were told the kitchen was closed. I told them we made a special trip for Mother's Day and had called ahead. The cook and woman behind the bar were notably irritated, sighing and rolling their eyes and then rudely said, "ok fine". I felt so uncomfortable I said I didn't know if we should stay if it was going to be such a problem. The woman said nothing, but just stood there giving me what was clearly an FU stare. It was one of the weirdest interactions I've had at a restaurant. So we left. The place is cute and of course this is not a big deal. But we won't go back. read more

Martindale River Cafe is a cute little cafe in "downtown" Martindale, just a few blocks from the intersection of Hwy 142 and 80. We stopped while exploring the area. They've just opened, but carry a nice selection of baked treats from Love and Lattice based in Lockhart, as well as a decent canned/bottled craft beer and beverage selection. The owners are very friendly, and I'm excited to see where this little place will go! read more

Went at 2:30 and called ahead of time to make sure they were open and they said that we could come eat. When we got there at 2:30 they told us the kitchen was closed and we're very rude, they eventually agreed to open the kitchen but we left.The atmosphere and music was nice though. read more

I love this place. The owners are amazing. Every time I'm downtown I make it a point to grab a treat from the cafe. Last time I went, I had the mimosa and Lockhart plate. OMGOSH the mimosa was huge and delicious and very inexpensive! The Lockhart plate was so tasty; I'm glad I didn't have to drive all the way to Lockhart just to get their food! My usual drink is the cold brew. It's not like a traditional cold brew, it's better. I can drink it black which is extremely unusual for me since I normally drench my coffee in cream and sugar. This is definitely a hidden gem, a great place to relax to catch up with friends or get some quiet time for work. They have live music outside as well. It's a great atmosphere! read more

Great little sandwich shop! They also have pizza but we didn't try it. I had a turkey sandwich on a croissant that was quite good but a bit too mayonaisey for my taste.
