UPDATE: Mr. Martinez ended up calling at 6pm and came out and cleaned the fireplace and put in the sand and ember material. He was very polite. I would try him again, just maybe not during peak season :) Well I was looking forward to giving him a good review based on other reviews I read but he stood me up. Originally, he couldn't get to see me for a couple of weeks because he was so busy. He asked me to send him a photo and after looking at it said I didn't need a chimney sweep. We made an appointment for a cleaning/service and I kept using my fireplace based on him saying it was safe use. Last week he shows up for the cleaning and says "oh you shouldn't be using this, you don't have ember material". I have no idea what that is. I've been using it this way for 10 years. He then proceeds to tell me how to start cleaning it because his calendar is so full and it should have been $125 not just the $80 he quoted me over the phone. I told him I was happy to pay the $125 fee. He said he would order the ember material and scheduled me today at 4pm. At 10:42 am he called and said he could be here in 20 minutes. I'm at work an hour away so we settled on 3pm and I left early to meet him. It's 5:27 pm and nothing. I've called and texted and he's just ghosted me. I'm guessing he wanted off early on a Friday, why else would he have tried to come 5 hours early and totally no show. Now I've lost an hour of work, have a fireplace I supposedly can't use and starting from square one looking for a fireplace person! My 16 year old is even commenting on how unforofessional this is. read more

I think it should have been half now and half later, but maybe he's had problems in the past. I will be getting it fixed in about 2 weeks. Should be a better way to be sure vett price and service. I had already had another company come out before him and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. And thought I may need need inserts. I called another "Bakersfield Fireplace Repair" business first and they told me that even if they were just down the street from me & dropped by just to look at it, they would still charge me $95 just to tell me that they couldn't do the work. So I called Martinez Fireplace after that. James Martinez picked up on the first ring and when I explained my problem with the fireplace, he said that he could just run over and take a look at it... for FREE! Not only does this man have good work ethics but he also has INTEGRITY... He told me all I needed was a part from Home Depot and even gave me the name and part number I needed to get it at Home Depot, Saving me a ton of money!! He charged me nothing for this great advice. I highly recommend Martinez Fireplace and Spa. Our fireplace insert stopped working and James was familiar with the brand, stocked many of the parts and was able to fix it quickly. We set an appointment and James was on time, polite and articulate. He cleaned the glass, vacuumed the entire unit and rearranged the logs so that the flame looks better than it looked originally. After another company told me my wood stove needed repair, I called James Martinez. I got a call back within a half hour and two days later he was cleaning my entire stove and chimney.
