Stop in on a rainy day for a beer. Not really a brew pub but had a couple beers on tap that aren't your usual. Where things really took off was the food. Their daily soup de jour was an Italian wedding ( I assume ) it was excellent . Only complaint was I prefer my soup to be made scalding hot but was still unbelievably delicious. If you want something a little stronger they have an array of top shelf liquors and great cocktails. Lemon drops are great, old fashions excellent. The bartender knows how to make a drink. Literally slices of cheese that looks like they came pre packed (not block cheese you cut yourself), and the prosciutto looked like it came from the Kroger deli and was really thick and big pieces. Some local friends and I decided to continue our girls' night out with some wine after dinner. One gal had heard good things about Marty's so we went to check it out around 9 pm on a Friday night. The space is a combination of wine bar that serves food and wine shop complete with accessories from chocolate to wine glasses. Needless to say, the place is jammed packed with merchandise and people on a weekend night. We found an open table and sat down. We were greeted by Marty and served by a wonderful lady who also got up and sang a fantastic version of "Summertime." Did I mention there was a trio playing live music about 10 feet from us? The crowd was very enthusiastic, so between the music and the patrons' volume, it was quite difficult to catch up with my old friends. Not the chill, wine bar scene we had imagined. Those having food around us seemed to be enjoying their supper and the items looked delicious. We each had a glass of wine (them red and a Riesling for me) and later tried the white wine basil sangria which was fantastic. Our server was well versed on the menus (good & drink) and quite attentive. We stayed until closing as we couldn't be bothered to move to a third location. I'd like to try them out again at happy hour or before the music gets started. Space is just too small to converse over the live band. read more

Waited for over an hour and a half for our food and when we finally got it, it was mediocre at best. We ordered two chicken and bacon paninis, and it was almost all bread. It has three very small pieces of chicken that couldn't even touch each other and one piece of bacon. It was tasteless and a rip off at $13. Our friends ordered bread and cheese thirty minutes after we ordered and got theirs 20 minutes before we got our food. The staff was apologetic and nice but not very helpful. Owner reduced the food bill 10% which was $.02 cents per minute. More of an insult than an apology. The only reason we stayed was because the entertainment was exceptional. They were the "2 howlers and Bruce." The atmosphere was quaint and reminded me of a 60's/70"s coffee house. Drinks were reasonably priced. My husband and I were both rather full after separate large lunches on Friday, so we thought stopping down the road at Marty's Hops & Vines made the most sense. This was because we thought their menu only featured smaller items, but it turns out they actually had a sizable variety to choose from. They have a cocktail menu, but the emphasis here is definitely on the beer and wine (hence, the restaurant name). My Martyrita was great, and my husband's Marty's Mule was definitely strong on the ginger beer. He had the Brink Beer Cheese, which is house-made with beer from College Hill's Brink Brewing Co. I had the Avocado and Roasted Corn Tartine. I would say that neither of us were overly wowed by these dishes, but given the proximity to our home, I would return and try other menu items. read more

I've never heard of Marty's Hops & Vines. A coworker had nothing but good things to say about this place (went twice). So a couple of my friends from work went on a Friday early evening. Marty's is located in College Hill which you can find a private lot in the back of the building. Walked in and really loved the atmosphere! Very cozy and intimate. They have tables, bar area, and lounge area where you can enjoy your drinks. They have a great selection of wines, beers, cocktail specials and even a small menu if you want to grab something to eat. The menu is not overwhelming and very simple. Cheese trays, Crostinis/Bruschetta, salads and pizza. Which all are in reasonable pricing. We tried the Red and Green Crostini -which is a Artichoke-tomato bruschetta and goat cheese on toasted crostini with fresh basil and Combination Plate which you get your choice of two epicurean meats and two gourmet cheeses (we chose the brie and aged sharp cheddar). Also a co worker let me try a slice of her pepperoni pizza (she got the thin crust which is 8" and build your own). Everything was perfect and tasted delicious. They even do wine tastings for $12.00 (tastings change weekly) which you get 5 pours and cheese which is really cheap! I got the Pinot Noir and a Malbec to drink that night and bought a couple of bottles to take home (Dry Riesling from Oregon and Prosecco from Italy). They have a great selections of wines and even beer section for purchase. I also liked that the owners walk around to greet their customers and if you have any questions, they are always available to help you. Everything was perfect that night! This is a cool spot. We were actually on our way to another destination when we spotted this. The name drew us in! So we turned around and headed in. Reminds me a lot of The Wine Merchant in Oakley. They had a wine tasting event the night we went but we chose to just grab a glass at the bar. Had a great time just browsing all the beer selections. We live on the other side of town so we won't be this way very often but I can imagine this is a great spot of this neighborhood. read more

THIS IS SPARTA!! Sorry about that, this is my 300th review and I had to commemorate the Sparta-level achievement with a little silliness. Ok, lets get serious. Wine and beer. Like politics, these beverages can start arguments and cause people to do some really stupid things. That being said, Marty's is like an adult coffee shop where you and a few of your friends can enjoy a nice cold brew, or a great glass (or a bottle) of vino. We were served by Bernice (Marty's better half, :) ) and we had a very silly conversation about our choice of sparkling wine, Sex. The double entendres were flying back and forth with rapid succession. I really like that they don't appear to be wine snobs. By the end of the first of our two bottles of Sex (please insert any possible sex related joke here), we were a little hungry so we had the ($4.50) Nutty Bar Mix (nuts, really? dirty mind, sorry). It was just enough to keep us satiated. Oh, and the Sex was just OK, next time I might go for a more serious varietal. Hey, at least the Sex was reasonably priced at about $15 with a $5 corkage fee. We left happy and will try to come again as soon as possible. There is also a rear entrance if you park in the back lot. *I was able to show Marty their Yelp reviews as he had never heard of Yelp. I remember when Marty's moved in a few years ago. Marty was absolutely instrumental in rehabbing what has turned into a beautiful building in the heart of College Hill's business district. Marty's has been an excellent addition to the College Hill community and is the first place I'd go to if I was in need of a bottle of wine. The staff is knowledgeable about their selection and can find something that fits the palette of any type of wino. Personally, I love the sweet stuff, but when I recently visited with a friend we were looking to split a bottle, and she preferred a drier wine. After telling Marty about our dilemma he immediately walked across the store and corked (free of charge, mind you) a bottle of Apothic Red. This was the perfect fit for us, not too sweet, not too dry. Marty also picked out a nice sweet wine for my grandmother. The rotating selection of draught beers is also a huge plus. The taps change every few weeks or so, which makes Marty's kind of an extended beer tasting. Marty's also offers some appetizers in case you get hungry. Crostinis are something you simply must try and they also have some good Tapenade and Bruschetta. The staff is jovial and active. Kerry likes to concoct a new seasonal mixed drink every month or so, which leaves plenty of opportunity to name new drinks and to step away from wine or beer for a moment if you feel so inclined. Bernice is great to joke around with and pretty much everyone here is bubbly all the time. If you're in the College Hill area, I definitely suggest a stop at Marty's. read more

Every single time I go to Marty's, the staff is welcoming and the drinks are tasty. Whether it is a wine flight night, an after work cocktail, or the last stop on a crawl, Marty's has enough drink variety to satisfy anyone anxious to whet their whistle. They have beer, and I've heard people ooh and aah, but for my money I am going to the wine wall or the drink specials. A cooler has wines and beers already chilling if you desire, or you can choose from the ample stock of wares located in all of the nooks and crannies around the store, or you can order straight from the menu. Thursday is no cork fee night, so teachers, plan your conferences accordingly. Marty has seasonal drink specials that are either his or his employees own creations. It is not unusual to find Marty or his wife checking on their guests, refilling drinks, or bringing out the appetizers. He has always come over to the table and said hello and asked how we were. That's just a little extra that makes you feel good. It's the details, people. Even more than the fine drinks and tasty nibbles (try the grown up grilled cheese with salt and pepper chips...nom nom nom), Marty's is really a community rebuilder. You can listen to live, local musicians on the weekends and there is always a tip jar available. Marty's hosts different events showcasing artists, festivals, tastings, wine pairings, beer pairings, or even food pairings. It's a cozy little bar where everyone really does know your name. The space itself is a little rag tag. This serves as both a plus and a minus. If you have ever been to College Hill Coffee and seen all of the tchotckes and knick knacks they have around, consider Marty's the slightly older and wiser brother. They haven't moved out of mom and dad's house, but they at least rearranged the furniture. While the ample beer and wine varieties are great for presents and take home items, it makes the entire space feel a little claustrophobic. Located by the large floor-to-ceiling windows at the front, there are 2 tiny tables surrounded with 4 comfy chairs each. The rest of the tables and restaurant style chairs feel much more cabaret than sit down and spread out. When my date and I ordered a wine flight each, we had to finish that before anything else would really fit comfortably on the table. I love Marty's, but I do avoid it at popular weekend drink hours. It's just too crowded too quickly, and if there is also live music, there is a pretty good chance you will be in the standing room only mob for an extended period, and there just isn't a good place to stand and drink. All of the available space is really the only place for the bartenders and waitstaff to move through the tables and get to all the folks who were lucky enough to score seats. Still, this is a place I will continue to return to as a staple wine locale, because the drinks are delicious, the ambiance is inviting, and sometimes you just want to have a wine night out instead of in. read more

This has been a tough year, so we haven't gone out much. Tonight, though, was a night to go back to check on Marty's. We had dinner. We got my favorite "Italian sandwich" in town and one of their personal pizzas. The price has gone up and the amount of ingredients has gone down, which was disappointing. However, it didn't take away from the deliciousness of the sandwich. It's still my fave. They claim the pizza is on homemade crust, but it didn't seem so. It was still passable, but a "REAL" homemade crust would have been better than this one that had all the qualities of a Kroger processed refrigerated dough. The big surprise was that, even after the extended time lapse since our last visit, the staff still had several familiar faces--and their service was exceptional. Never, since our favorite server, Bernice left, have we had such a good experience. Chelsea, who is practically a veteran now, was great as she always has been and the other servers made sure we were well taken care of. PLUS...the wine tasting this night was amazing. We know in advance that tastings are going to be "hit or miss." That's what wine tasting is all about. But in the past we've seldom had selections where we liked more than two of the five or six wines offered. Tonight was a home run. Even the wines that are nowhere on our go-to radar hit the mark. We even bought one of the bottles known simply as "Red Wine"--a blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah from California to take home with us. I'm really happy to see Marty's step it up from our previous visits. As I've said before, our neighborhood needs to hold on to places like this. They've definitely earned another star. We live down the street and I have drove past this place a million times. I finally decided to meet a friend there for dinner. This is a super cute/intimate location. Perfect for a date or to share a glass of wine with a good friend! I was not hungry when we met but my friend was. She got a sandwich and I ordered salt and pepper chips for the table. After trying a bite of her delicious sandwich, I am sold. This is definitely a Cincinnati gem! Even my chips were finger lick worthy delicious! I went with the pinot noir option but our server brought us some samples of other reds to try as well. I particularly love the "sandwich shop/wine store" vibe of this place. I am coming back here for my birthday! I will gush, the North College Hill area is becoming slowly one of my most favorite areas of Cincinnati. Here for the Beer Week event - lots of happy people swilling New Holland beer. Tried the New Holland Envious - start with ale, then implement a second fermentation with pear juice and Chardonnay yeast. Finish it with 45 days of aging with raspberries and oak slats. What you end up with is an interesting dry beer with fruity tones and not much hoppy flavor. Very enjoyable. But back to Marty's - the space is warm and welcoming, with several stuffed chairs and tables with a nice bar area. Everything looks new, and the building/space renovation is awesome (look at the picture on Google maps and compare to what it looks like now). Staff are extra friendly and very accommodating - the event was pretty crowded, and they outdid themselves to ensure that they could seat as many people as possible, even in the aisles using every chair they could find. They were very solicitous and very attentive. The best part is of course their selection. I really appreciate a focused and particular small wine and beer store - their shelf space is precious, and they don't want to waste any of it on pedestrian booze. This is such a place, at least in their beer selection. Lots of brilliant domestic brew, lots of Belgian beer, just a great selection all in all. Parking is in the lot behind the store or on the street. Stop by and pick up a few bottles, and have a well-deserved drink in the bar before you head on home. You won't be disappointed, and you'll be supporting a local small business that works hard to bring quality to your experience. read more

Ever since then I have been hooked! Every time I've gone, Marty (the owner) is there and is really friendly. Since my husband and I have become somewhat regulars he knows us and always makes a point to speak to us and see how we've been doing. We love going on Thursdays because there is no corkage fee which is a great deal! I always get a flat bread pizza and love it every time. I like Marty's Hops & Vines! It started with me discovering they have a fantastic beer selection for purchase. Oh, perhaps I should clarify... Marty's is both a "have a seat and relax" bar and "stop buy and pick up your favorite spirit" store. Marty's scores high in both sectors. Their beer selection is great and includes both room temperature and refrigerated. I no longer need to drive to Jungle Jim's in Fairfield if I want to pick up a nice, interesting brew. I've never examined their wine selection, so no review on that. Marty's has regular wine and beer tastings. Check their website for the schedule. The schedule always includes the beers or wines that will be available for tasting. If you just want a nice night out with friends and you're lucky enough to get the comfy chairs, it's the perfect place to relax and enjoy a night out. In addition to the wine, beer and great atmosphere, they have some fun chotchkies and tasty snacks to take home. Their bar menu is also nice. Nothing too extraordinary and maybe a little pricey, but not bad. Marty's also has music, so you want to check their site to see when and who might be playing. This place has got a lot going for it. Marty's Hops & Vines is a nice little winery. Marty's has an arrangement with a couple dozen 4 seats per round table set up. There is also an area with a couch for a more relaxed setting. The night they came they were having a wine tasting but we did not participate. Because we did not partake in the wine tasting it was a $5 bottle opening charge for the bottle of wine we did order. I had the Marty's House salad with chicken. The salad was very good. Marty's has knowledgeable servers and a wide selection of wine and craft beers. I would suggest coming to Marty's if you're a wino and are looking for a nice relaxing evening in Cincinnati. read more

Fantastic food! Got the Adult Grilled Cheese. This is the first time I've had what I think was pesto on a grilled cheese and it was wonderful. The staff was really nice and the food was made to order in about 10 minutes. They have a great beer and wine selection to browse while you are waiting for your food too. What a delightful evening I had tonight with a friend at Marty's Hops & Vines. I met up with a friend from church tonight after work, the location is in the heart of North College Hill with ample parking behind the building. When I walked in what a great setting wines & craft beers all around you with a variety of seating options, the lighting just right, loved the strands of lights around the shop When I found my friend, given drink menu, special seasonal drink menu & food menu I was trying to decide between a local craft beer or a Sauvignon Blanc wine, they let me try both & went with the wine from Chili, food variety of sandwiches & pizzas to chose from, I selected the grilled cheese as I love cheese & even better with pesto. The food arrived minutes later & was delicious I devoured it. Marty came over & introduced himself, thanked us for being there. Tuesday night is ladies night & selected wines are half price, I enjoyed 2 glasses of wine & food for $17 wow I signed up for their events email list, interested in attending one of their future events. Tonight was my first time at Marty's with a friend. The customer service was great. They have a nice selection of reasonably priced wine. I'm not a beer drinker but it appeared to be a decent selection as well. I picked the perfect night to go, Tuesday night is ladies night! Half price glasses of wine for ladies on Tuesday.
