My last review of the year and I'm glad I'm ending it with Big Ash Brewing. I've been wanting to check this place out before Covid but never got to. Since we've moved, we are only 5 minutes from this hidden Gem. I love the outdoor patio and very laid back inside. Clientele is definitely chilled. This brewery is very unique and smart! You walk in, a hostess asked for a credit card to scan on file. They give us a card. And with this, you go to any station and pick your poison. Beer and wine. Whether you want a flight size glass, pint or snifter. You are in control of how much beer/wine you want. It also gives you a pricing on the how much an ounce. Not feeling beer? They have a bar that makes specialty cocktails. Hungry? You order that on a touch screen. From appetizers, salads, and pizzas. You get a buzzer. Once your meal is ready, you will pick it up at the window. Such an easy transaction! We ordered: Symphony Vienna lager Pay Joe Pilsner Woody's wheat Paddle Boat pale ale Spekulicious cookie ale Life's Too Schwarz schwarzbier Spicy Chocolate 7" caprese pizza 7" controversy pizza Everything was perfect! The beers were smooth, nice finish, and flavorful. The only one I wasn't impressed with was the spicy chocolate. Did not have a kick. The pizzas were the right size and was really good! The balsamic on the side paired well. They have live bands and offer happy hour. I love this place. I can see us being regulars here. read more

I don't see any reviews after the switch to La Rosa's? La Rosa's is what you would expect, and if you don't like it elsewhere, you won't like it here either. The self service beer is a good gimmick, and the beer is pretty good. But there are lots of places with good beer in Cincinnati. read more

Stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon - We loved the self-serve experience of choosing from multiple beers on tap, without having to commit to a full glass if you were only wanting to have a taste. I settled on the Waves of Grain ale which I enjoyed. We ordered #1 pizza - toppings were very good but the crust was ordinary (did not eat the crusts, a sure sign of a lackluster dough). Service was friendly but spare (it's almost all self-serve, so not much of a role for staff except to direct confused patrons). The space was open with lots of seating. Ambiance is industrial/parking lot. It's located where the old (and kitschy) Rancho Rankin motel used to be, which old time Cincinnatians might remember. read more

A consortium of Brewers got together and decided to open their own brewery. It's a story book tale that actually worked. At Big Ash Brewing is all about the beer. They have a beer "Vending Area" area. You get a cash card then you pick and dispense your beer of choice. It's a great concept. Since I'm as newbie, I tried a small sample of several to find my favorite out of about 30 in-house brews. Then I got a full glass and sat down to some local entertainment. Tonight's band was "Twice Is Nice". A couple of talented guys who can sing pretty good, playing the music of Tom Petty, James Taylor & Elton John and a few of their own. After a few beers, We ordered food from the other "Vending Area". "Plan your own pizza" Sauce, cheese, toppings. Pick it up at the window when your buzzards goes off. The pizza was just "Ok". Our absolute favorite place to go after pickleball! The staff is terrific, the beer is great, and we love the food! Outside tables, inside, or on the patio (our favorite), the environment is wonderful! We're regulars and plan to stay that way! read more

This is yet another quintessential "been wanting to try it for a while" spots. Hey! With so much around the greater Cincinnati area, it's hard to check out all of that list, but my lady and I finally stopped by here, and we're absolutely glad we did so. Excellent beer, tasty pizza, and a very laid back atmosphere. What's not to like there? We stopped by on a Friday evening. The place was pretty busy but we were still able to find seating. We sat nearby where the brewing magic happens because I was curious to see it all. One of the very friendly employees told us all about the place since it was our first time. She set us up with a card to get all our drinks and food and showed us how to get it all. We started with a couple brews, my lady got the Symphony Vienna lager and I got the Pay Joe pilsner. Both were excellent and the card-based self-serve tap wall is super easy to use. Then, we placed an order for two 7" pizzas, with my lady opting for the caprese and I opted for the controversy (Yes, I believe pineapples belong on pizza! Deal wit it! ). Of course, we went back for another round, with my lady getting Woody's Wheat and me getting Paddle Boat IPA. It wasn't long at all before our pizzas were ready. We really enjoyed both of them and I liked that the crust was thicker but not super thick a la Chicago style. After we enjoyed every bite, we had another round of brews, with my lady getting the Spekilious Cookie ale and me getting the Life is Too Schwarz schwarbier. The cookie ale was a touch too sweet for my taste but the schwarzbier was very solid. We did split one more out of curiosity, the Spicy Chocolate, and though we didn't taste any spiciness, it was still pretty good and chocolaty. Big Ash is a great place for beer geek and non-beer geek alike. Not a beer fan? They also have wine, spirits, craft cocktails, and non-alcoholic options. They also have big screen TVs if you wanna watch a big game. Feeling like a board game? They have lots of those too. They even have live music scheduled regularly. Why not drop by for the Monday through Friday happy hour from 4-6pm? Want some merch or to-go brews before you leave? They have lots of those too. You have to pay attention when you arrive and hear the spiel because it's basically self serve. Many of the beers I wanted to try were out. So where most my wife wanted to try as well. The pretzel bread appetizer was really good. The pizza can only be described as terrible. If you like the pizza, it's because you don't know any better. There's much better pizza in the frozen section of your local grocery. Red Baron and Jack's is better. Try that before the pizza here. I was hoping it was going to be something like the Pizza that used to be at Taft's Brewpourium. Sadly disappointed. The cinnamon stick dessert was ok. I'd have that and skip the pizza. Big Ash is in a great location and has tons of outdoor space, including a patio and a parking lot space for live music. A wide variety of beers, and a self serve model allow you to pour whatever size beer you want, which is nice. The beers are fine- nothing I really didn't like, but nothing that really blew me away either. The food options are also fine. Pretzel with beer cheese is decent. Pizzas are good. More expensive than other similar offerings. My 3 star here is because of the value. Everything here is a little more expensive than I would expect. Everything is also self serve, yet they tack on a 20% gratuity if you 'express checkout' - after you need to give them a credit card upfront to serve yourself anything. I also had a problem where one of the taps 'blew' after pouring just a few ounces, leaving me with a $2.00 foamy mess of the end of a keep that I still had to pay for. I would go back if friends wanted to meet there or if there was a band I wanted to see, but I don't think I'd suggest this place. read more

As an introvert I loved it bc I could be left alone! And, I am newly gluten intolerant so I was super excited about the cauliflower crust but the upcharge was painful ($5). When I got my food my pizza was soggy in the center which was not fun but the toppings and crunchy parts were good. We were invited to a business meeting at Big Ash Brewing. I found it a bit on the pricey side - especially for a serve yourself setup. I appreciated the selection, and I certainly enjoyed the food. They have a huge setup, and the football game was on, so that was a plus as well. I am a little concerned for the location - I see there is development around them, so hopefully they are in the right place for the are to grow around them, but our group were the only customers, and the kitchen was feeling the pain. Times were longer than I would have imagined, and one guy was working his buns off, while the other two chatted about how hot it was. I didn't see any leadership the whole time we were there - and if I did see them, it wasn't obvious they were in a supervisory status. But, the beer was cold, the selection was good, and the food was decent. Not sure I'd make my way back on my own, but if I happened to be part of a group wanting to go, I wouldn't fight it. read more

An awesome place to go to! The drinks are all on tap and you can pour them yourselves. I went to a private event here for a rehearsal dinner and we were given cards to swipe up to $20 and full catering. I went another time and ordered a vegan pizza to have with beer (photo attached) and it was delicious! The only SELF SERVE BEER AND WINE TAPS I know of, just grab your debit card and serve yourself! Spend the 20% tip money on a pizza! Love it! What innovation! And they aren't just serving their own beers they have the best of the best local breweries represented on the tap line. Why go anywhere else? Where else can you pour yourself as many samples as you want? The price is per ounce so sample as little or as much as you want. What a great concept. Larger menus can be found elsewhere but the salads, pizzas and Servatii's pretzels are all excellent and this is better pizza than any other brew pub within 20 miles...what else do you need? The outdoor seating is perfect for a date night but the long tables make this the ULTIMATE Monday Night Football spot for your neighborhood. They could handle a business group of any size. I've always loved this place for the beer and the pizza, especially on the nights with music or a sunny afternoon on the porch. In November, I threw a birthday party at Big Ash, and everything was easy and perfect. Stephanie was so wonderful to work with in planning the food. The spread of food not only looked wonderful, it was so so good: we had pizzas (which I already knew were delicious), sliders, veggie, fruit, and meat trays. I'm still wondering where they got such beautiful and tasty berries in the middle of November?! They were also attentive to bringing the pizzas out in intervals so they were warm. The ample party space on the heated porch was perfect; we could hear the band in the background while enjoying conversation. I also appreciated that decorating was allowed. I decided to try this place during pizza week and for nine dollars I felt like I got a pretty good value. To me the pizza was just OK, possibly would've been better had I eaten in but I carried out. The toppings were fresh, it was well cooked and generous generous portion for one person. I really liked the roasted cauliflower bites and will definitely try to make these at home. Had a great time randomly stopping in Big Ash Brewing for the first time! We are rarely in the area, so when we knew we were having dinner over that way Big Ash was a must. We stopped in after dinner and the host graciously greeted us and gave us all the details of how things work. We loved the idea of being able to pour your own beers and drink in amounts that you prefer. Great for tasting a little bit of everything without having to order expensive flights or full glasses. Went for Christmas trivia last night with some friends and definitely was not expecting how busy it would be. Not enough seats to even play. One of the male employees worked his butt off while I could tell others didn't really care so that was kind of frustrating but I get it since it was so busy. Food was good and the beer choices wasn't much but it was enough. Setting was nice and I liked the way of how the card works to get food and drinks. Overall decent experience and hope to go back soon on not such a busy night and maybe even compete in trivia. I had a great time Sunday afternoon meeting up with some girlfriends on Big Ash Brewing's outdoor patio. My friend had reserved a table, so was able to walk in to the patio and go right to the table. I was ready for a craft beer, so their process was to give them a credit card to swipe and they gave you a card which you use to tap to get a beer, food. I then got in line for beer there were variety of people their for their Sunday afternoon faith and conversation series, Chuck Mingo from Crossroads church was there to talk about Undivided. Since the line was long for beer, I selected two, Strawberry Lemonade a German sour beer and Shut Yer Trappe a Belgian Tripel and ordered early dinner Fiesta pizza. I enjoyed the beers, the Strawberry Lemonade was very refreshing on a hot Summer afternoon and the Belgian Tripel was nice with the fiesta pizza which had a spicy tomato sauce, the flavoring was just right and great pizza. I ended up getting a to go container as the pizza is enough for 2-3 people. I had a great time on a Sunday afternoon and would be interested in returning to hear live music and for the faith series. My boyfriend and I love Big Ash Brewing!! First and foremost because they have a dog friendly patio. The ordering process is super easy, all you do is you swipe your credit card with the attendant, and then you're handed a beer card that you swipe as you go! You pour your own beer, and tab out at the end of your meal. I really like this approach, because we do not have to wait to be served, we can order food and pick up our drinks at our own leisure. This review is for my experiences before COVID-19. Big Ash Brewing is a self serve brewery. So how does it work? Can anyone just walk in with a cup and start drinking? No. Though it's still pretty easy. A credit card is attached to a brewery card. The card is used each time you want a to pour a drink. Without the card the taps do not pour. Drinks are by the ounce, not the glass. How much you pour determines how much you pay for that beer. There is no more wating at the bar for a bartender to see you. Self service taps keep things moving. When you are ready to leave stop back where you started. They will close out your tab. If you don't, just like other breweries and bars there will be an additional surcharge added to your bill. What's on tap? Well... that changes. There is always a selection of Big Ash beers, as well as guest taps. Usually a few of those guest tapd are ciders. With 24 taps there is always a wide variety of options. I find milk stouts and cream ales to be very hit or miss. The milk stouts and cream ales here are a very big for me. Dreaming Cows milk stout is full bodied and creamy, with large flavors to match. I think it is my favorite beer of theirs... that I have tried. Ciderboys cider is frequently on tap. There ciders are very fruity, easy to drink and quite refreshing. They also taste like the fruits they say they are. Hungry? Big Ash has got you covered. Pizzas, salads and appetizers are made to order. Try one of their signature pizzas, or create your own. The pizza has the crispness I look for in a thin crust pizza. Toppings are fresh. There are so many fun ways to customize your order. Gluten free cauliflower crust may be substituted for an additional charge. It can get loud in here. Especially if visiting on game day. The large area behind the taps has long table that are perfect for big groups. The plastic around the patio is a great addition. This allows patrons to enjoy the patio on rainy days, and escape some of the noise. read more

We ordered the Controversy, a Chef Salad, and a Chicken Bacon pizza. WOW...not what I expected. Such a let down starting with the size to the canned pineapple, the burnt chicken, the crust....this is just the pizza. The salad was straight out of Frisch's. I like the concept and they are making sure you sanitize between going back up and getting refills and making sure you use a new glass. We went there one Saturday evening when we were able to ditch the kid. It was busy and seating was at a premium. After figuring out the lay of the land with pay-as-you-pour beers and ordering food, we found a place to sit. We ordered the corn and black bean salsa (overpriced for the size) and a pizza. I was out to brunch with a few friends in Newtown when one of the girls mentioned how cool Big Ash Brewing is. I heard pour your own brews and instantly was intrigued. We decided we needed to try it and headed in after brunch for a few samples/drinks. Big Ash is located on Skytop Pavillion, which is all but dead. Skytop used to be a hustle and bustle strip with a grocery store, gym, and restaurants, but is now home to two coffee shops and lost signage. I don't know if they received a good deal or they're trying to revitalize the area, but it was definitely a head scratcher when I first saw the coming soon sign. However, they made excellent use of the former El Rancho Grande. There's entrances on each side that guide you to the register and self serve stations. Multiple employees were around, readily able to explain the process. It's quite simple: you can either pre-pay a certain amount or have an open tab. Your money/card is connected to a Big Ash card they give you to swipe for access to the different drinks. Their seating area is huge; the patio is casually filled with different types of seating. The back is lined with long benches. This is a great place for large friend groups! They have a limited menu centered around pizza. I saw some that sounded interesting, and my friend said their cauliflower crust pizza is one of the best she's ever had. I've already made a mental note to come back and try some! I wish they had a little larger selection. While they do have a good list of local beers/wines on tap, I'd expect it to be larger because a lot of the selection wasn't alcohol they made in house. If it was all them, I'd think it's an excellent amount of choices. However, since they have many different brewery friends joining the party, I think they should have a few more options. My small "complaint" is more of a suggestion to an already excellent start. I hope more people hear about Big Ash and visit soon. Was excited to check out a new east side brewery that seemingly had been a long time coming! We went on a Sunday afternoon. Now I am just going to say it up front, my 3 stars is solely for the beer. I tried all of the Big Ash variations and really liked them. Now to the rest... This standalone location is located in the front of the old Remke plaza which is all but abandoned now. For this reason there is plenty of parking. Upon entering the wood detail is noticeable and appealing. We were greeted at the register by a lady who was ready to guide us on how things worked. The trick here is, you have to start a tab. Your credit card is given, and then you are given a key card for the taps. The taps are self serve and you are charged by the ounce. There are wines, beers, and ciders on tap. 3 glass sizes are available in sample, snifter, and pint. We opted to do all sample sizes so as to get a good tasting of all their beers. There is nothing to carry a flight on so we just did 2 at a time. Not everything on tap is made by Big Ash. They also carry a selection from other local breweries. There is a list above the taps of "whats on tap" and the taps themselves were easy to work. Seating. There is quite a large patio outside, which is nice, but it was very hot that day. Near the taps there is bar like seating which we opted for below 3 TVs. If you go further in, which is a little bit dark for a nice day, there is a large room with long table family style seating and a huge almost wall size tv, with a few smaller tvs on the side. That room was crowded as the Bengals were on. Water was available in there. Sitting at the bar we decided we wanted to order some pizza to give it a try. At this point it became evident the downside of a self serve beer style place, the lack of service. The wonderful lady who gave us the orientation had left for the day and we were left to search for someone to take our order. Once we found someone it wasn't a huge wait for the pizza, but it was just brought out and thrown down on the bar without even asking who it belonged to. We knew it was ours and took it. The pizza was just ok, chicken was overcooked, crust was ok. We finished the pizza and beers and opted to cash out. Here is the other issue, the key cards. When we first checked in, the lady found the first keycard she tried to give me was still linked to someone. When we checked out that person was having a hard time closing out the key cards. Both of us were a little leary that this method is not fullpoof and someone could essentially rack up a big bill to your card, if the cards arent unlinked properly. Really really cool concept for a brewery!! However the selection of beers was kind of "meh." The pizza was really good!! We enjoyed the vampire and buffalo chicken pizzas. Make sure you get in early on the weekend!! Tables are community style and fill up fast... hence you may get stuck in the cold /: the patio has no heaters so if its windy you may have to huddle in a corner to keep from freezing! read more

If you don't mind self-service for your drinks, then you'll like the choices on tap. I visited to listen to the band and did like my drinks. However, I was rubbed the wrong way when I went to pay my tab and an automatic 20% tip popped up on the screen. You do have the option to change it it to no tip or other amount though, so make sure you're paying attention. I had to wonder whom I was tipping as the only staff interaction I had was when I got my "drinks card" and paid the tab. read more

There was a soft opening tonight that Jaccard W. informed me of--glad he did, since I've been waiting for this brewery to open. Located at the bottom of the Beechmont hill at the Skytop Pavilion on the Beechmont Levee by Lunken Airport. This is destined to be a good spot. Their beers are all pretty good. Nothing blew my mind, but they were all definitely good that I sampled, and a good variety. A couple or so IPAs, stout, blondes, lagers. Ok, this taproom is different. It is self-serve. This is a new concept that I've not seen before and I've been to many brewery taprooms. You pre-load a Big Ash card when you get there, then use it to serve yourself. Slide your Big Ash card into the tap, pour however much you want (up to 32oz) into whatever style glass you choose(Sample size, tulip, or pint). This will be confusing to most, but it works-with a few kinks that will be worked out. My card added up, instead of down tonight because mine wasn't pre-loaded with a set amount, so I paid on my way out, not paying at the beginning. This is why there are soft openings. One of the owner/investor/manager/interested party sought me out to give me his business card in case anything went haywire(customer service!). There is also Zablong pizza on hand and Servatii pretzels for the nosh. Don't tell anyone, but I heard they will be silently open for the next week before their Grand Opening in a week-or-so. They have a great covered outdoor area, Ash wood throughout, TVs for sports, plenty of room for groups/parties, plenty of guest brews too(once licenses are approved), plentiful parking. This place is so cool! Came here for a recent happy hour and really enjoyed the concept, from the self-serve taps to the ash wood tables. When you arrive, you need to provide a credit card to get a card that operates the taps. You can put that card into any of the taps on the main wall as well as use it to order food. They have three different glass sizes available, so you can just get a little sample if you want to try something, a snifter or up to a full pint. The card records what you've poured by the ounce. In addition to their own and other beers, they also have a few wines on tap. At the end of your visit, you can visit a register to pay your tab with credit or cash. Or, simple drop your card into the express checkout mailbox by the door--they'll add a 15% gratuity automatically.
